Hey Marty! I have a question... I was taught to make a half rotation with the string around the peg and pull it up between the peg and the string. When you toiiighten it (lol), it "locks" the string in to help prevent slipping. It is the right way? Is it a personal preference thing? Just curious because you didn't mention it at all. It seems to be working for me since I've been doing it for years. But I'm just wondering 🤔 GREAT vids by the way! Thanks for all your tips! ✌
Another tip: After you remove the old strings, line the tuners up so the holes are parallel to the neck. Makes it easier to thread the strings through the tuners by making them easier to access as you go along.
Best stringing tutorial, thank you for being in depth and explaining everything. I bought some new strings and broke the e string tryna watch a 5 minute tutorial and I was super bummed, then I found this video and got some new strings and nailed it!
I feel like im 12 again learning how to play guitar from Marty 😂 im 20 now and still playing guitar. Happy to see Marty’s still helping ppl with it too :,)
Hello 👋🏻 Marty and a huge thank you for not just your tutorial videos but having the on screen persona that makes it more enjoyable to watch as your a very likable guy. Love your channel my friend. I’m pushing 60 and just started this month. Been watching a marathon of videos from you 😂
Man, I choked on my water when you said, “ you know, like when you’re at Guitar Center getting ready for a Sesh..” That’s so true, I hate that. Also, I thought I was the only person that says Toight, like a Toiger! Every time I use the word tight. Really enjoy both channels Marty. Thanks!
Really wish I came to Marty's video first. Never strung a guitar before and totally broke first string because of lack of instruction in other video I watched. Thank you marty for being the best guitar instruction video guy on youtube
I literally just broke a string today! And I was looking for a video on how to change strings as I have always gotten it done from the local store here in Mumbai which is closed due to the whole COVID situation! This was just what I needed !!
@dillinho Oh really sorry I didn't get you before! Yes it's fine right now, cases are low here and things are getting back to normal as more and more people get vaccinated. Thank you for your concern! 🙂 Hope you are doing well too!
I always wash my hands before I touch new strings. Also, Tip #6a: On Gibsons I wind the strings above, not below the previous wind to reduce the angle from the nut to the headstock. This helps the guitar stay in tune over time.
Saved to favorites! Thank you so much Marty appreciate this video very much. I live an absolute terror of having to change strings. Luckily I have a guitar shop nearby so I usually have them do it. The few times I have tried I screwed it up royally. End up cutting them too short or too long, bent strings and very bad wind on the spool ! And then I have to buy a whole new package because i screwed up one or two strings! Thanx
THANK YOUUU! I finally re-stringed my guitar for the first time since I got it like a year ago. I know I should’ve done it sooner, since it was a used guitar, and idk when the last time it’s been re-stringed was until just now, but at least I did it!
My tried and trusted method has always been to measure out the string and add around another inch / inch and half to it. I then pull the string backwards through the hole an inch / inch and a half and use that slack to do a ‘wrap around’ the tuning machine. I then begin to wind it to tension. It gives a good solid hold and I’ve never had any issues in all the years I’ve been doing it
A good habit to get into is having a socket I think 10mm is standard don't quote me, and make sure all the tuners are snug, I check them every string change and tighten as needed. It's worth doing. Obviously dont reef on them but nice and snug is good.
Little pet peeve...bend the strings back downward before cutting...otherwise the ends will cut through your gigbag or snag other stuff. Otherwise great video as always Marty!
I love D'Addario products. My str8ng tool and cleaning products and strings are all D'Addario for my electric guitars and acoustic guitar as well as my violins and viola.
I’ve noticed after years of restringing my guitars that improving my skills has done so much good for the tuning stability of my instruments. You can have high quality tuners, nuts & saddles, etc. but a shoddy restringing job will make it all worthless.
Great instructional video. Love the vintage stereo amp/receiver in the back. I had a Sansui 9090 back in 1976. Yours looks like a the vintage Marantz. Regardless, Great choice. Wish I still had mine. Had the same Tom Petty Album also, (LOL).
I always have a thought time changing my guitar strings there either too slacky or cut them too short and mess up the whole set by one mistake my glad I find Marty to help with my guitar problems
I would really love a lesson for "The Outlaw Torn" by Metallica, because I cannot find a good one+ Marty is probably my favourite teacher of all time. (Yes, I love Load)
Perfect timing, dude! Just got a new (2nd) guitar, and the strings (med something, it seems) are making that wobbly sound, so I'm ready to put new (thin) strings on. This is a breedlove, though, and the pins are not pins, at all. They're screws!
I took my SG apart at a beach in Long Island. Not wise, such little tiny doo dad parts. I believe I got them all, but I was so scared. I loved that guitar.
Awesome, Marty!!!! I am getting ready to change strings and clean neck and body of my new used epi LP, heritage cherry sunburst, 50's chunky neck guitar! BTW, I think I have the same stereo amp you have!
… I went and deep cleaned my electric guitar, BTW: it’s a strat. I went to deep clean it and I took the top plate up which I had to like unscrew all 12-13 screws and I messed up the springs that the humbuckers sat on when I took the top plate off. So now every time I flip my guitar up side down to put the strings in or any time I’m holding my guitar the regular way I have to deal with the humbuckers leaning down and almost touching the strings, lol not really annoying.. super annoying😂. Honestly I came to u because well u taught me how to play guitar. and I’m hoping u have experience with this because I have no clue. Hope u see this comment!
o yeah man! Love your content - glad you make one of these. Finally broke my first string - I feel like I'm part of the club now. LoL thanks for the tutorial - and the dad joke.
Get Marty! I love watching your videos, I have been struggling to find a lesson for REFUSED - Rather be Dead can you please upload a lesson in how to play it?
Guys if Marty is doing a spot on string changes we should prob go ahead do some spring cleaning and get all ours done also. I switched to a 9.5 to 44exl D'Addario not a bad switch from the 10's not sure if they will stay on that strat but my Dean loves them.
As someone who just recently started really playing acoustic, I always thought the tool used to pull the pegs on an acoustic was supposed to be used for stretching the strings after changing them.
In my experience, it's NOT the same for all the strings. These tutorials always show only the thick strings, which are easy. The thin strings are the problem.
Check out some of my favorite D'Addario strings and guitar accessories here: ddar.io/marty

@CYB3R2K30 yeah life's been pretty hard ever since 😪
Leave it to someone with the username "brm" to turn a convo about guitar strings depressing.
I had no idea that changing strings was such an involved process. I usually just unwind the old ones and slap the new ones on.
That`s exactly what you do bud !!!!🤣🤣🤣
Includes paid promotion. I’m sad to feel that’s the way this channel has gone... been learning from Marty for years, but not for a year or so
I wish I could just slap my guitar and they magically put there selves on
@@txhellrazor4765 It takes a bit of discipline, but you'll get there.

The stretching of the strings is a crucial part to prevent the string from taking your eye out. Thanks Marty!

For those of a particular mindset, I trim the old strings by the nut.
