We need to keep violent offenders in jail. When people are wanted in one province the arrest warrant should automatically be across the whole country for violent offenses. It just makes sense.

It will get worse as long as we continue to give confused messages about morals. The criminal should be described as a criminal and not covered by a mental ill. Drug use is wrong, and the drug user bears full moral responsibility for his choices.

I don't know about Vancouver but the TTC in Toronto keeps increasing fare prices for continued mediocre service.
I used to use the TTC a decade ago, then 5 years ago when I was doing undergrad and in both those time periods nothing has changed. The TTC still always ran late, and suffered from long wait times.
If your trip calls for 1 hr, you'd better make an extra 1 hr allowance for the TTC service because of their subpar service.
And now add this on top of it all. At least hire some more equipped staff or police to patrol subway stations and certain bus/streetcar routes if TTC wants to keep increasing the fare. The TTC owners are just lining their own pockets.

    • @crabbcake

All transit achieves in Vancouver is give lunatics access to normal people. The main train used to have 'open' walk on platforms and it was alright and inexpensive. Now its a battle with druggies and criminals - gated off the platforms. The machines for fare to my memory are 'slower' . Before you'd worry about the odd alcoholic.. NOW at any given time on the platform there's sense every other person is wanted to get into a confrontation and stab you.

This really does not address the problem.
I feel sorry for people, who are forced to use public transit.
They regularly have to share this transit with persons, who are filthy and have serious behaviour problems.
Children have to witness things, that they should not be exposed to, on public transport.
Transit users are at increased risk to infectious diseases in these mass transport vehicles.
There are people, who are not able to survive independently in society, yet they are on their own with no or inadequate supports unable to cope with normal life.
Then there are people, who will always be chronic criminals with no desire to change.
There is rampant inequality, which leads to tensions in society.
When are the real issues going to be addressed?

In my opinion, this is more related to urban structure of these two cities. Better pedestrian flows everywhere promote naturally more public transit uses. And more uses increase substantially the safety of public transit by passive surveillance from the presence of people. These two cities Toronto, Vancouver are known as very walkable cities in their inner centers. But only in their real estate valued core. In fact, these two cities have very high segregation level between the downtown and the others. The entire city areas are all horribly segmented and broken into disconnected pieces where it is simply impossible to walk around. And globally, they are both very heavily relying on individual cars to move around and commute like very typical US car oriented cities. Plus, with Covid, many opted for remote-work, so even lesser users for public transit now. Thus in the cities where it is quite hard to get a usual daily interaction with people due to lack of pedestrians, it’s relatively easy to see trouble seeking people swarming into the public transit cause that’s only place where they can find their possible victims. And I fully agree with TTC representative that we need more people using public transit to make our public transit safer. But how? I have no idea cause, so far, urban development of these two cities have been far from inclusive. They have been largely concentrated only in the real estate value focusing zones. So the urban segregation has been even more intensifying. And we are witnessing the very result of this intensifying segregation now.

I live in Toronto and mixed housing is everywhere. There are many vacate warehouses that could be easily turned in housing but the politicians want deals for upscale condos only. Like the abandoned land parcel at Downsview where the soldiers were housed it has sat empty for over 20 years with houses on it sitting empty? Now there is a deal to build expensive condos while the homeless sit on the streets

Simply put 1) the Police needs to figure out how to have much more presence in public spaces and transit. With a $1 Billion budget for Toronto, you'd think that should be achievable, yet cops these days are hard to spot, no wonder perpetrators have a field day! 2) The TTC must enforce fare evasion and stop people from camping out in stations and vehicles. These are common sense, bare minimum actions that need to happen before any long term solutions that will take years to fund and deploy. How we're still navel gazing is a mystery to me, a sure sign of weak, inneffective leadership at all levels that is becoming Canada's trademark.

I have an idea why there could be more violence in the busses. Lots of passengers, and I am not talking about Caucasian passengers, are extremely disrespectful of the other passengers. I am am an immigrant as well, however, I know better, and I respect the rest around me. That is not the case for some other immigrants. I have to be going for treatments from Red Deer to Edmonton by bus. I have ridden in the all the different bus services available. In three of the lines, I had some very noxious disrespectful passengers either behind me, on the side, or on the front talking through their cell phone through the entire trip. They were not whispering neither. They were telling on the phone, and acting as if they were the only ones on the phone. The last incident, I asked politely to the man yelling on the phone to turn it down a bit, he continued and he actually went out of his way to annoy me. By the time I got out of the bus, I had a pounding headache from the stress.
So, as long as there are not boundaries and serious rules for passengers riding any public transportation, there will be the possibility for violence in the busses. If someone is on the edge already for whatever reason, and someone triggers them with their disrespectful behavior, they can go off easily⁉️

Stop normalizing violence. Stop making violent movies. Stop making violent video games. Stop wars. Stop making ammunition.
    Increase mental health services.
    Decrease homelessness.
Increase resources for people with addiction issues.
