- The Mazda3 is already one of the more intriguing family cars on sale, but what happens when you throw a brand new SkyActiv-X petrol engine into the mix? That's what Rebecca Jackson sets out to discover in this CarGurus UK review, in which she assesses whether Mazda's engineering-led approach has resulted in a car that can't afford to ignore.
Written review: www.cargurus.co.uk/research/M...
Pros
Stunning styling for a family hatchback
High-quality fit and finish
Satisfying to drive, with nimble handling and a comfortable ride
Cons
Far from the most spacious car in its class
Naturally aspirated petrol engines need lots of revs
Relatively high emissions

I think that Rebecca could perfectly have her own channel, and probably would get more subs than some of these car channels. What do you think, people?
She has her own channel
@Firemarioflower
I did not know that. Thanks.
But it seems her channel is about her personal and professional life, not a car reviewing channel. Which seems logic, when you think about it.
@@mindtraveller100 When you look back to her oldest videos on the personal channel they kinda are car reviews, allthough not for a company.
@@mindtraveller100 She's paid by CarGurus for these videos, and she wouldn't get nearly as much from UA-cam advertising alone.
she is boring actually and i did not enjoy her review non of what she said useful as a potential buyer, search men review could give me better chance to decide though!
Looking forward to driving that. I drive a 2019 Mazda CX-5 2.2 diesel, and it gives me pleasure whenever I am behind the wheels. Mazda technology is awesome
This is a terrific car. Stylish and great to drive, and the interior is better than premium rivals. You also get a lot more for your money than with German rivals and it will probably be more reliable. Mazda are one of the few engineering led companies with a willingness to do their own thing. Basically what Germany marketing pretends they are and which they once were but aren't anymore.
This is the greatest compact sedan by far.
Bought new Mazda 3 4 weeks ago...absolutely love it!!
Bought the new Mazda 3 hatch 5 months ago , & I love it.
I was waiting to see the Mk.8 Golf to decide between the new Mazda 3 hatch and the new Golf. I dunno, I've always been firmly on the VW side but the Mazda is just so good looking. I'll need to test drive it.
@@TheRustedPixel Both good cars, Mazda interior is nicer I think, but better visibility in the Golf.
@@appydaze9419 Interesting, thanks for that.
Yes the new Horse and Cart from Chinese Mazda really is great for the turnip market in 1560 lol 😂
Have you experienced any Cyl deactivation vibration issues that some owners have been reporting?
Another great review from the lovely Rebecca! 👏🏻
Great to see the skyactive x is making its rounds. Can’t wait to see it over here in Canada. 👍🏻
Great Video Review as always
Great review and succinctly presented 👍
1:41 Great to see she hasn't forgotten that legendary quote ☝😊
Love her reviews; very professional; enough details; beautifully put together.
The reviews or Rebecca ?
@@richardshiggins704 Beat me to it :)
I like the way Mazda go about things. If they could put this engine technology in a propper hot hatch or RWD sport saloon I would be all over it
I believe they currently are developing a new RX-series car, likely though with an iteration of their rotary engine though. I doubt if they'll bring it or their properly perforful engine (2.5T) to the UK because of emissions regs, although the corporate CO2 levels and penalties won't apply (presumably) if (!) and when we eventually leave the EU. I'd love the 3 to have an MPS version with their 2.5 turbo, which currently is only available in the North American-only (and perhaps Down Under) bigger CXes than the CX-30 and 5 (the 7, 8 and 9). Even the 2.5 SA-G would probably be nice, as it has more torque (about the same power though) than the 2.0 SA-X. I saw the Savageese review of the 3 with the 2.5 SA-G auto and it was good.
They could just drop it in the Mazda 2. I mean the engine bay is huge and a 180hp N/A hot hatch that does 50mpg is a no brainer to me, coming from a standard 2 owner.
I dont know about Europe, but such a thing is confirmed for North America next year....the 2.5l turbo used in the Mazda 6, CX-5 and CX-9 which in current tune makes 250 bhp and 310 ft lbs torque. If they mate it to their wonderful 6 speed manual and AWD drive system then wrap it in that sexy hatchback body work...watch out.😎
Just ordered my 3 skyactiv-X hatch whilst in lockdown... hopefully won’t have to wait long! #staysafe
Many people have changed complained about front grills getting enormous, like on Mazda. After seeing how big U.K. front license plates are I can see the intake needs to be big to get around the plate.
A review while it's raining, so English
So British 🇬🇧
@@revolutions88 Yes. "So British", not "English".
I love the look of the new mazda 3 saloon. The hatch looks good too, but this is rarer in europe so i would have this
Awesome review and awesome car! I wonder when Mazda will release a CX-5 with Active-X engine.
I think the CX-30 will be the next to get it
Great review 👍🙂
Nice review, easily told & very insightful! Plus you are so very cute! Thank you for making this.
Edit: just subscribed!
Just bought this exact model but with Heads up display and assisted cruise control. Brilliant. 👍🏻
Condratulation mate. What's your experience so far?
It's great and we are very excited for the skyactive x here in the states but the fact they added a mild hybrid system is disappointing. They're doing this to prove that gas engines can still be efficient yet they didn't believe in it enough to leave it as only that (or even better having the hybrid as an option) I'd really like to see what the fuel economy numbers look like as just a gasser. Cool and to the point review.
Brilliant car.. I like this new Mazda 3 looks good 👌👍👍😉😍
in that outfit, Rebecca could easily be a member of the royal family looking even more beautiful than before.
another great review . so glad to see and hear her again.
Pffff why would she be around or be compared to those fake people. Rebecca is a GENUINE warm person, not an aristocratic Victorian Relic.
I was the first in my county to take delivery of this skyactiv x saloon. I'm loving driving it and it looks amazing. I prefer the saloon body style over the hatchback which was very claustrophobic inside.
Ordered mine yesterday, cant wait
Thinking about getting one for my partner - the 2.0 Skyactive X saloon in top trim with white leather.. Test driving one (a hatchback) I found some negative points - rear passenger space is really tight, no rear USB sockets nor air vents and only one USB socket in the front! Also some scratchy plastic more basic fittings.
So how are you getting on with it?
@@newbeginnings8566 there is a USB and power socket under the arm rest. My child is only one year old so only needed enough room for her rear facing car seat in the back. I like the refinement of the car. The toys and quality of the interior are not matched by any of the competition.
I'm seriously considering the 3 sky-x. The entry level engines is just to weak (my country didn't get the 2.5). This seems to suit the car better. Top in class quality and an engine to match the competition, this should be a great buy.
Really like the look and quality of the new Mazda 3, one thing I have not found out though is the NoX levels it produces.
chances are they're similarly low as lower nox goes fairly in-hand with increased efficiency
Hope this comes to the states soon!
I would take this over any focus or golf, even a 1 series, A class and A3.
Changing my 2017 Mazda 3 Sport Nav for this new model tomorrow. Auto this time tto make life more comfortable.
Such a fantastic car. And those looks!!! WOW.
She always look beautiful and lovely women
Great review Rebecca.!! You went to the trouble (OK you didn't...but someone did 😀) of removing the engine cover to show the engine. The description of this engine reveals a VERY complicated design and to view it reveals A VERY complicated design.!! So I think as a buy and hold the G version is a safer bet. Unfortunately as far as I know this means the Hatchback version though.
waiting for the 6 SkyX (in my 0 recall Mazda 3 from 2013)
nice video! thank you!
What a car...I have very high hopes for the sky-x engine...oh and the 6-speed manual...you got me Mazda.
I hope that we get this in the US. I might buy one other than the fact that the back seat is so much tighter than other similar cars. It seems to me that this is the achilles heal of all Mazdas.
the world especially the motor world press needs to get behind mazda’s originality and innovation
how does the sky x engine perform? do u get a good acceleration response considering that it has a supercharger?
I am in love 😍
Hi Rebecca, you've been one of my favourite reviewers since you started at Carbuyer
6:25 Yes, yes I would. I love naturally aspirated engines and i like how great the handling is of Mazdas. The design is also inspiring and the quality is briliant.
SkyactiveX is not naturally aspirated. Its supercharged.
@@RussellRobinson77 THAT"S A LIE!!! Check your facts!
@@Firemarioflower not only does Mazda mention that it's supercharged, you can see the compressor on the side of the engine.
On vacation in Germany , I noticed most Asian cars were Korean (best value?). And most Japanese cars were Mazda (Performance?).
I'm waiting for the SkyActiv-X engine to be available in the U.S. Any idea when that's going to happen?
Will Mazda UK introduce Skyactiv G to the saloon models? Thanks.
I really dislike hearing NEDC CO2 ratings when combined with WLTP fuel economy figures; the former would equate to about 120g/km, but throw in 18" tyres and there's an approx. 5% hit to economy. Max torque - 224nm - arrives at 3000rpm, sounds like this isn't a problem.
I'd go as far as saying 45 to 50MPG is more between 2l diesel and 1.4l NA petrol, so more impressive than it's being given credit for, especially given it's quite a heavy car.
The banana’s are back 🍌 great review Rebecca & keep up the good work
If you like quirky reviews check out Sarah N tuned (she has a thing about Penguins).
4:04 Mazda is always good with rotory 👌😉
I believe you are mistaken that the screen has a 'combination of touch and rotary control' - it is not a touchscreen from everything I have read.
Does the rear seat can recline?
Welcome back Rebecca
Excellent car but I would like to see more power options like German cars always offer, when you can have as much power as you want going up in small increments. Good review. I'm subscribing.
Im a simple man, I find new car channel with rebecca I press like, Hopefully one day she will re-join matt :)
Lovely car but i would still have to go for the hatch. I think in a year or 2 this would make a great used buy. By the way i am guessing this one is in Soul Red but in the video it looks a bit brown.
Still love my mazda3 2005
Love the cream leather seats too very premium and upmarket
I agree. I have them in my 2 and they look great and glad they have them here too.
The former 3 also has these white seats. Actually the sedan isn't changed that much...
I'd only drive hatchbacks as they are just so good at everything but man, the saloon of the mazda 3 does look better than the mazda 3 hatchback and that is a very pretty car in it's own right. Just that C Pillar area looks really odd on the hatchback.
Do you wait for it to rain before each review?!
It seems to me that many of the commenters here don't realise that the '3' does have a 24volt mild hybrid system and induction is augmented by a small, part-time electric supercharger. Handsome car, especially in that shade of metallic red.
I like it, great review. 180 HP is good for a non turbo car, but assume that U.K. drivers use higher octane petrol than in the states we may see lower horse power with 87 octane regular.
Possibly not. UK and US octane ratings are different. I only discovered this a couple of years ago. www.etuners.gr/fuel/
Here in the UK our standard petrol is 95 octane with 10% ethanol but we can get 99 octane 5% ethanol (Shell Vpower).
Skyactiv g which model come with 122hp and 150 hp. How to identify
Mazda is best ❤
The infotainment screen is too small. Why Mazda would put a small widescreen is beyond me, it's not like people are watching movies.
A bigger or taller screen is needed for navigation.
What you going on about they don't do a diesel in the 3
2:59 I love a girl that is knowledgeable in technical stuff cuz i'm really lacking in that department!
Refreshing change to have people realise that it's not just guys who drive and indeed buy cars.
Oh go-on then! 😜
I would consider the Mazda 3 if it had the option of an opening sunroof in the UK but it doesn't.
What does she say at around 3'47 about the dull/doll? Is it about the digital dashboard/indicator? Just cannot find that word(meaning) in the dictionary.
She says that the dials are easy to read. I also think the dashboard is really nice on this car.
@@billmorrigan386 Thank you, Bill
I’d love to see a comparison of this car against the new Toyota Corolla saloon .
Does the infotainment system actually have touch? I thought they've stopped that.
Mostly no. I believe it's voice controlled and also there's a control knob by the stick shift.
No its not touch. I never use touch on my 2 anyway preferring the manual control by the handbrake.
Actually, why can't you do the review after the rain stop? 😅
That car has a genuine premium look and I really like it!!
I want the awd hatch. The ultimate daily driver
1 month of ownership... Happy as fuck with the Hatch one.
What really keeps me from buying any mazda is the damn small back space. And I'm not a really tall person to begin with. If only they'd improve on that knee room.
Known as the Saloon not Fastback in UK.
Why didnt they go electric?
We missed u Rebecca

@@basshead. you're an idiot if you think new mazdas are boring they're quite engaging to drive (with a manual) compared to other competition
The banana had me laughing out loud.
Did I miss where she mentions the torque figure for this engine? Other than fuel economy, thats the most important thing about having a normal gas/petrol engine that can behave like a diesel. At 180 bph if it doesnt at least match the 2.5l engines 186 tq, it's a huge disappointment to me. Doesnt matter though, we're shceduled to get the 2.5l turbo engine next year..and if it keeps it's current tune, that will mean 250 bhp and 310 ft lbs torque...in other words it may be faster off the line than a GTI if they mate it to their 6 speed manual and it has the advantage of AWD 4 wheel launch. Golf R/Audi S3 will both still be a bit faster, but also much more expensive so its a wash in my book. Mazda 3 turbo all day every day, twice on Sunday..
🍻
Was hoping it would be more economical. I get an average of around 50 out of my Ibiza. The 3 is faster though (and better looking!)
Don't forget that Diesel has a higher energy density than gasoline, which means your Ibiza is less efficient than this. I would say that's quite a feat coming from a 2L gasoline car, seeing as others are achieving worse with 1L turbocharged engines.
@@TheFPSPower I did forget! Thank u for putting things into perspective!
What. You would break up with your Ibiza, for a younger better looking model. No loyalty anymore. Ha.
@@denisdaly1708 I just might! That 3 is a real looker!
2.08 just scratch the roof,lol.
There are no touch controls of the infotainment system, just rotary controller
No. There is a touch screen.
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII Did you test that car? :)))))
@@ongnarukami4451 the old Mazda 3 had an touchscreen, the new one doesn't
Anyone else predicted the umbrella was going to scratch exterior from the start?
The sedan works better than the hatch, not only the rear end not being so bulbous but the front end actually has detail on the lower corners. However, it's a sedan, so that's a pretty big drawback
Mazda 3 Skyactiv-X sedan known as a fastback needs 2 doors instead of boring 4 doors; it requires awd, rear spoiler and aero kits.
Hi Jessica, will we get a review with the skyactive X but in the hatchback version of the Mazda 3 ?
Jessica? Her name's Rebecca jackass
Nick Horton oooops sorry Rick
Have had my mazda sky active edan for 3 months. An otherwise excellent car but the hard ride is very disappointing. Cannot understand why the many reviews I have seen about the mazda 3 do not mention this.
We still have a 2012 Mazda 6 2.2d in the family. The ride is ridiculously harsh for the state of UK roads as they are now. In 2012 it was OK, but still firm. The handling is superb, and lateral grip even better but I'd happily have traded some of that for a bit more comfort. It's an ageing but otherwise useful car.
came for the banana, not disappointed
why is it a fast back not a sedan?
Zhiheng Ye it’s a sahloon we called a car a sahloon car

What the heck is going on with that background music? It sounds like a warped record from the 70s.

What is Rebecca doing here? I thought she was with What Car.
Looking smart and formal
Completely disagree with her closing statements. If the engineers won, it wouod have a 8 speed auto and IRS. I much prefer the prior gen 3. It had IRS, better steering feel, cost less, lighter weight, and the hatch was useful without the current gen blind spots. Mazda left this pass 3 owner behind for new customers i guess.
The main reason (other than inflation) why Mazda3s of today cost a lot more than the gen-1 (like mine [still going!]) and gen-2 cars is because they are all made in Japan and thus are priced originally in Yen, and the £Pound has depreciated about 30% and more since the mid to late 2000s, meaning cars sourced from outside the UK (essentially 90% of cars sold in the UK) will cost a LOT more than if the currency value had remained roughly static. Don't forget that the specs of the model over the earlier two versions has gone up as well.
That being said, whilst the car (the SA-X) in this video is very good, it IS expensive, getting very close to the starting price of a BMW 2-series. The same could be said for its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla 2.0 hybrid, both coming in over £27k, although the Corolla doesn't come with the better (and new) 2.0 in saloon form, just the insipid (taxi) 1.8 hybrid. You have to choose either the hatch (fine, but like the Mazda3, a smallish boot and rear space) or the estate (a nice looking car, best of the three styles).
Few good deals as yet, but it is quite new, and I would wait until at least 2020 until the new SA-X engine has bedded in - any problems by this time next year will be apparent and hopefully sorted out. From the reviews, the lack of an independent rear suspension (over the previous three generations) hasn't made much discernable difference to the handling, but supposedly has improved the ride quality (an issue I have with the other cars - its a bit too firm for my liking - I changed from 16in to 15in alloys and tyres which helped) and is cheaper/simpler to maintain.
A shame they couldn't have spent money on making the dealerships better, especially on the post-sales side. Many fellow Mazda car owners on forums regale us with tales of woe and on a regular basis regarding the experience with dealerships (sales seems ok though) and on the less-than-helpful attitude of Mazda UK. The reviewer here missed one thing though - I believe Mazda have now dropped all the (new 1.8) diesel models from the Mazda3 range - not sure why, given the 1.8 only started with it in March when it launched, now only available in the CX-3. The CX-30 might be worth a look as you get all the benefits of the 3 plus 4WD/auto options across the board and a bigger (hatch) boot, albeit coming at a price.
Shame they appear to have ditched the HUD. I have come to use mine as second nature and driving feels odd without it.
they have HUD way better than the old version..
