As someone with genetic-based depression on both sides of my family, I’m tired of directors constantly depicting depression as “sadness”. While that is some people’s experience, it’s not every experience. I’m typically numb emotionally. To me depression has more to do with a lack of mental energy than mood and I wish this was more accurately depicted.
First, I agree completely with your actual point. I have major lifelong dissociation from trauma, and chronic major depression and anxiety but have trouble feeling it. One of my absolute favorite movies is GardenState because it really captures how I feel. If you’ve seen it, does it resonate with the numbness you’ve expressed?
Also have genetic-based depression - thank you for saying it. I like to describe my depression to people as running on low power mode emotionally and mentally. I'm not sad - I literally just don't have the energy to feel emotion.

@Booper Dooper while that technically true, for festivals like TIFF good luck getting tickets to high profile premiers. They are usually completed booked due to press and industry and other high profile/wealthy individuals. Regular screenings are much easier but there can still be rush lines for high profile films with regular screenings. Press and Industry also get their own screenings not open to the public. So it’s definitely possible as an average person, but I think it’s harder to get tickets than most people give it credit for.
@Booper Dooper So, from someone who will never be there, connections. From what the other person replied, I’d find out who gets access to hand out to others, and put yourself in the position of someone who gets invited. Amanda is a reviewer, and possibly got on a list because someone in the industry noticed her; you could find a platform and consistently make significant reviews. Or, you could figure out who else ends up at these things, work your way up to that position, and then work on networking to find people with access you could inspire to invite you. I’ve seen it work in the fashion industry, though not from firsthand experience. For me, both that direction or the saving for tickets are equally unattainable. But if what you like is the film festival aspect, there are other venues. It takes a lot for a movie to make it to that list. The ones that don’t do premiere somewhere. I used to go to films at museums, which were retrospective but had similar vibes. I live in a big city, but you could find a big city near you, and go to independent film festivals there. If you aren’t reviewing, it doesn’t matter if it’s the biggest films. You could go to a major music festival, or you could go to one of the many much more accessible music festivals. The same is true of film.
I hope Brendan gets a major big budget leading role again someday. Even if not an action role because of his injuries, but some good dramas or a sci-fi/fantasy.

I saw The Wonder in Telluride this year with my mom. I was entranced by it, especially with my ancestral background coming from Ireland (and family being impacted by the famine). Also- you might need to do a reaction to Bones and All because holy shit. I saw it in Telluride and it was an experience- people walking out, someone apparently fainting. On top of that, we got to meet Emma Corrin on a gondola ride. They were incredibly lovely. I wish my mom and I was able to get into Women Talking- I have heard nothing but good things.
hey Amanda, I'm just curious but seeing so many movie in such short order; do you even have time to let them 'sink in' and process before seeing the next one? the content of your current watch won't erase what came before?
I always wondered what happened to Brenden. He was one of my favorite actors back in the day when I was a young hormonal teen. Good God, that loin cloth in George of the Jungle 😳🔥. Then I absolutely loved The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. I’ve probably watched them 100 times. On top of that, he just seemed to be such a genuinely nice guy. I’m SOOOO happy to see him in something. I really hope this is his comeback. He deserves it ❤
Very entertainment, much gay, wow I actually saw Bros this past weekend, it was great! A little intense at times, especially for someone like me who hasn't seen a movie set in the actual real world in ages, but I definitely recommend it.
As someone who had ptsd since age 5, The Son was def written by someone who has NO idea about children and suicide. I had been passively suicidal from age 5 to 29. And it was only intense therapy and the right meds to deal with my acute ptsd to stop it. I wanted to walk out of this movie multiple times. It made me so upset.
I was excited as hell the moment the trailer for The Menu dropped, and was waiting on your opinion; so glad it didn't disappoint, now I'm even more stoked to see it! Also definitely going to see Bros in theaters, even if it wasn't incredible I feel duty-bound to support it knowing everything that went in the making of it. The son was infuriatingly depressing. I will for sure never watch it again and I'm honestly bummed that I watched it ever. Laura Kinney did a good job though
My favourite movie at TIFF was Women Talking. I also ran into you on King St and said "Are you Amanda the Jedi"? (You were) As l walked away l was hoping it wasn't a weirdo thing to do.
I can understand him being frustrated but I think we can come up with better reasons why the movie didn't do well. Marketing could have been issue. Its halloween month and ppl will mostly likely go see horror movies. Its why Smile is doing so well right now. Romcoms dont really do well at the boxoffice anymore. Ppl think watching blockbusters are more worthwhile in theatres. For some folks Bros seems like something u would stream and watch at home.
In regards to The Inspection not saying it's good or bad or maybe shouldn't have been tightened up some but conflicted feelings and a level of hypocrisy in how you treat other marines vs how other people are allowed to treat them is pretty damn true to life
I immediately went to look up the end of Biosphere. I made a guess. I didn’t think it would be right but I was right. I’m not sure what to think anymore.
I felt the same about Glass Onion - it's SO much fun and I am planning on buying tickets to see it again for its one week in theaters, but if I was forced to rank them I'd still pick Knives Out as my favorite of the two
So you mentioned your favorite, “Sanctuary” which surprisingly sounded familiar: have you ever seen or heard of “Piercing”? Same setting, same male lead, nearly the same plot. Any correlation?
All of the ones you loved are the ones I most wanted to see (except for biosphere, but I can deal with weird) and I’m so flippin excited to see them now
I won't see Bros because I hate romcoms and I hate Billy Eichner for thinking he'd ever top Nathan Lane as Timon. Definitely going to see Weird and going to try to see the Whale, I love Brendan Fraser and want to support his comeback if I have the money.
Your first statement is so needlessly rude imo. Eichner accepted a role that was offered to him, that awarded him the $$$$ to fund his pet project, Bros. I've not seen it !myself, I plan to, maybe you could give it a shot as well. Sometimes it's refreshing to expand your horizons!
Damn. "The Son" sure sounds terrible the way you describe it. You'd think there were more than enough people in the industry who know about depression.
I might be the only one commenting this, but Fabelmans looks amazing, Paul Dano is the Goat, and the movie looks like the beautiful, family-centric film that the world needs right now. Hopefully it delivers.
i heard so many opposite reviews for roost people either loved or or hated it lmao but the important thing for me is... how was grace van dien? i need her to get big post stranger things, she was so good with such a small role!
Now I am more relaxed to seeing glass onion. I always keep thinking when I see rian Johnson’s name on a film is “please don’t suck this time please don’t suck this time,” and even though from what you said that the OG film is slightly better-as long as I get a good mystery film I’m down.
I saw the trailer for Empire Of Light last Friday. Even the trailer was a mess, because it only talks about the theater and the main couple doesn't even appear in the theater at all in the trailer, so it felt like two things trying to play at once. My mom really wants to see it because the soundtrack is done by Trent and Atticus, but I can just listen to that and probably have a better time.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these movies, Amanda! They're awesome! Your picks are great here, like, some of the movies on this list, like the one planning to see, The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination, are really good! Great job!
I just want to comment on The Son, (not seen it) I personally struggled with severe depression when I was very young, at 11, and it was incredibly difficult for me and my mum to deal with. It took YEARS of getting help via medication, different forms of therapy and so much more to get even remotely closer to a functional life. I can understand that its a hard subject to tackle BUT that is why I think it's even more important to do your research before trying to make a movie about it! Imo if you can't do it well don't try to do it, it just comes across as shallow.
Child of divorce here AND diagnosed with depression: PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BLAME THE DIVORCE, it has been 13 years and people STILL say oh poor thing it’s probably because it was a bad divorce, like, IM 25???
I read the book "Women Talking" and really didn't love it--I mostly finished reading it because it wasn't long. I think part of what made me dislike it was that the narrator/main character the book is filtered through is a man who left the community, then returned; that just didn't work for me, personally. But I'm wondering if the movie might be better, especially if it takes a new perspective and carefully portrays the historical event the book was based on. (EDIT: Sadly, yes, this...actually happened. It's awful to read about. Trigger warning if anyone does google it.)
Your commentary on Fableman is pretty much how I feel about the last 20+ years of Spielburg. Feels like it's forcing emotionality and avoiding conclusion.

I loved Pearl but I agree it probably would’ve worked better as a short film. Also shoutout to the Alexisonfire album in the background love that one
PLEASE do a video on Weird. I'm so excited to hear your thoughts on it!!
All of the ones you loved are the ones I most wanted to see (except for biosphere, but I can deal with weird) and I’m so flippin excited to see them now
Never apologize for long content! We are here for it ❤
I won't see Bros because I hate romcoms and I hate Billy Eichner for thinking he'd ever top Nathan Lane as Timon.
5:05 if you think that is a poor emotional handling of divorce wait until you see unicorn wars
Yo! 'Manda! What brand toques you wear? I love them - want to get some before Winter sets in. Thanks.
Thank you, and I'm very much looking forward to your individual reviews🌈💛💙💜💚🌈
As a Swiftie, I'm so jealous and happy for you right now to be able to see Taylor Swift 😩
Conspiracy theory: She’s going to announce some point in 2023 that she’s going to write and direct a feature film.
Damn. "The Son" sure sounds terrible the way you describe it. You'd think there were more than enough people in the industry who know about depression.
Thank you for your honest and trusted opinion you goddess of film reviews. ^-^
Was Bones and All at TIFF? Were you able to catch it? I’d luv to hear your opinion on it! PS - loved the video 💛
I might be the only one commenting this, but Fabelmans looks amazing, Paul Dano is the Goat, and the movie looks like the beautiful, family-centric film that the world needs right now. Hopefully it delivers.
I was hoping Amanda had seen Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, but I’m happy for these reviews for movies I hadn’t heard of
i heard so many opposite reviews for roost people either loved or or hated it lmao but the important thing for me is... how was grace van dien? i need her to get big post stranger things, she was so good with such a small role!
"The real nurse who killed patients" You gotta narrow it down a bit more
Very excited as an Irish person to hear Banshees of inisherin is good
Now I am more relaxed to seeing glass onion. I always keep thinking when I see rian Johnson’s name on a film is “please don’t suck this time please don’t suck this time,” and even though from what you said that the OG film is slightly better-as long as I get a good mystery film I’m down.
I'm so excited for Knives out 2, I'm seeing it in theaters!!!
Have you seen Barbarian yet? I would love to hear your reactions and response.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these movies, Amanda! They're awesome! Your picks are great here, like, some of the movies on this list, like the one planning to see, The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination, are really good! Great job!
Aftersun is going to be the closing film at my local film festival, really hoping I can catch it.
Does anyone know when Sanctuary will be released to the public?
I’m actually attending the BFI film festival so I’ll be seeing a good few of these next week.
Love ya AtJ but "Pearl' is kinda fn awesome. So we will hafta disagree for once (tho you did get redemption point for being excited for 'MaXXXine')
Waiting for your take on Don't Worry Darling
Loved this breakdown 🤠 Can't wait to check these movies out 💜
Your commentary on Fableman is pretty much how I feel about the last 20+ years of Spielburg. Feels like it's forcing emotionality and avoiding conclusion.
Wondering if you saw the film “Sweet As”
(I am entirely biased because I personally know the guy who plays the character of “Sean” in it)
