    The #Fiat500 has always been a cute little urban runabout but for the performance #500Abarth, #Fiat turned up the wick on the turbocharged multiair 1.4L engine to 160 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque on the manual transmission models. A lowered suspension, upgraded wheels/tires, and one of the most rambunctious exhaust sounds you'll ever hear, the #Abarth version of the #500 could very well be one of the loudest factory cars you can get for under $25,000.

      @Fat Buddha i agree, but scotty mostly mentions the early fiat 500 with the naturally aspirated engines. Those did break down quite often. But ever since they switched to the turbo engine for all models, the fiat 500 has been a really good affordable car. 500 Abarth obviously the top level and deff worth buying. I actually own a 500e , which come with the full abarth suspension. so its basically a tad slower abarth, but handles amazingly well

      If he has the ESC on (he said Sport ESC... the Abarth has ESC ON, ESC off, and ESC full off. Sport button doesn't do a thing to the ESC), then the car's relatively spongy and feels rather iffy. ESC Off is where the car really starts to get fun, the simulated ESC actually works really well with decent trail braking and it rotates well.

    I don't know how people are complaining about a stiff factory ride. I drove it 2,500 miles across the country for a move, and I did it in heels without problems and it was absolutely acceptable in comfort. As flawed as the car is on creature features or perceived luxury, the driving experience makes up for the hard plastic (who spends time caressing soft touch dashes or A-pillars anyways?!) and weird window switch placement. I've only used the radio once to verify it works, and it's been off ever since because it's so fun to row gears in this car, even putting around town.
    I guess some of the boys here are getting old and cranky and can't fit into, or enjoy small fun cars like the Abarth, or Elise, or Caterhams. I even laugh when people complain they can't fit into the wonderfully bolstered Recaro seats in the Fiesta ST. It's no wonder the American market is so hard to sell sports cars to, and the take rate on manuals is abysmal here. People complain that they want a stick option, but no one buys them, and some of those that do end up complaining about lack of auto-rev matching nanny assists.
    You were at a driving school and should have been informed about snappy lift-off oversteer in a front engine, FWD car. It's especially prominent in the 500 that has an even worse front-rear weight distribution than most FWD cars. Most people who tune will stiffen the rear spring rate and add a tuneable front anti-sway bar to stabilize it for a more favorable front roll center and to keep the rear end planted under more advanced track situations, like threshold braking or trail braking. I have Bilstein B8's on the rears and lowered the back an inch (the car is actually raked from the factory, with a higher rear end) and it's helped the handling along with weight reduction at the front of the car. This car is reasonably capable given it's envelope limitations, and it is absolutely enjoyable to drive at non-illegal AND illegal speeds.

    • @fj717
      @fj717 5 років тому +2

      Well these cars are hot there unlike in the US. We also have similar treatment of city cars here in the middle east. Perhaps comparatively cheaper gas means people prefer bigger cars.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 5 років тому +3

      I think Fiat was unwilling to make the investment in a US-compliant facelift. Still stuck in its old ways of thinking (plan for Europe first, then decide whether to apply to North America), not a good idea when the US market is so big. American cars did, however, get the interior updates. The Euro facelift lights probably didn't comply with US DOT standards.

    • @justadudewithaniq2668
      @justadudewithaniq2668 5 років тому +1

      They sell like 2000 of these a year and are most likely merely keeping them on the market to meet or near CAFE requirements. There's no way FCA is putting ANY more money in the US version than they already have. And, while the car is 'hot' in other markets, the joke's a little on the buyer, yes? I mean, this vehicle hasn't been significantly upgraded in more than a DECADE. To put this another way, you're driving the Okay-estly Engineered Car of 2007.

In the UK I have a 2018 Abarth 595 (500 to you guys) which comes with Sabelt bucket seats, real carbon fibre interior trim, a Garrett turbo putting out 180bhp, quad exit Milli Magnilia valved exhaust, Koni FSD shocks with Eibach springs and the new updated front/rear bumpers......really cant understand why you still get the old model

      One of the big issues is the Chrysler side of FCA. They don't want anything to disrupt the sale of their trucks/suv's. They've done nothing but try to get rid of fiat in the states since their return. We're suv crazy over here and it's disappointing. I owned a 2015 Abarth 500 and loved it. I now have a 500L and it's almost as fun, super useful and am looking at grabbing another Abarth in the next year...

    I remember this young guy on the freeway with an older little car who simply couldn't stop admiring my little Fiat 500. Each time he passed me up or I passed him up, he'd give me multiple thumbs up and a huge smile on his face.
    On another day, I was at the stop light and these two little kids in the car next to me were super excited. They asked me all kinds of questions about my lil Fiat 500. I guess in their minds they thought it was some sort of toy car. They made my day. This car is adorable and so much fun to drive.

    So we have owned 3 Fiat 500 cars. Two Abarths we still own one Abarth. The car is a Blast to drive, total fun total bad ass fast. That is the good part. Now for the bad stuff. DON'T buy this car for any other reason than its just plain fun to drive. It is WAY over priced for what you get. There are plenty of other vehicles in the same pricepoint that offer much more features and quality. The car is all plastic which is fine FOR WHAT IT IS. You will get noticed especially with the exhaust. We do wake up the neighbors in the morning backing out of the garage, but then again, he is elderly and would sleep all day if we did not use our Abarth as his alarm clock. The worst thing about this vehicle is the depreciation. As stated, we have owned 3 of them. Expect to lose 50% of its value right off the top. Each time we traded one of ours in what we were offered was just maddening. For a vehicle to start off being so rediculously overpriced, the opposing end should be somewhat reflective of that. I bought my Abarth used and saved about 10,000. It was a year old and apparently the parents purchased it for their teenage son and he got so many tickets, they made him get rid of it. His loss, my gain as it was in literally new condition. But expect to pay 32-36,000 for a new one which is insane because of the total lack of technology, cheap materials and again, its financial disability. BUY this car ONLY IF YOU LOVE DRIVING and the money factor is way down on your list. Stop listening to old people telling you their history of "fiats used to be crap, it breaks constantly blah blah blah). This is 2019 all of our Fiats never broke, we never had them in for any repairs beyond oil change etc. The cars are pure and simple FUN and F A S T .

      I bought my Abarth new before returning to college. The only problems I had with it are the driver window. I treat my car like my child so it's not from slamming doors. The window wouldn't roll up at about 3000 miles. I'll have it for 2 years this September and I'm not even at 15k yet. Red leather throughout, full loaded 500 cabrio. Love it. I would love to collect more Abarths in the future, but the dwindling value upsets me as well. I wish I would have moved to an inner city before buying it also because there are horrible roads that are rough on the suspension.

    Great to see a review on this car and on my home track! The Abarth is a BLAST to drive. I have a 2015, and love it for what it is. No, this is not a perfect all around car--it's essentially a quirky looking two-seater with attitude: Not polished, not high-end, but not expensive either. It's great to get around town or run to the airport/back and all the while with a big grin from the fantastic exhaust tone and the zippy little torque machine. It's a tiny little clown car (which is what I call it) and I love it. All that being said, the reviewer didn't do the car any justice. I race on this track a handful of times each year and it is very technical and very fast--if you know what you're doing. It's obvious he's not a track guy.

    Cold starts in the winter on my '17 Abarth sounds sooooo good, and the daily 'pops and bangs' of the exhaust is so fun. Kept mine stock until the warranty wears out and I'm loving every minute of ownership. No issues so far, perfect for the city, sounds great, quick but not fast which is okay....too much traffic around me daily to really enjoy a fast car anyway. I wish Fiat would offer some of the higher end models like they do in Europe on the 500's, I think that'd capture some interest back in the brand. Everyone else is coming out with Dodge Demons and crazy Mustangs, and that new Corvette...ooffff....so why shouldn't Fiat come back with something more aggressive of their own model that all of us Abarth fans are really waiting for.....

      Maybe 230ft-lbs, but not 320 even with a turbo swap. We aren't breaking into the 300's yet with the North American Multiair engine. I'm at just over 200/230 with a Phase 2 from EC. Even the factory exhaust pops and bangs. It's the ECU tune that determines the overrun gurgle and snaps.
      The Europeans have definitely pushed into the 300 range, but they have the T-Jet engine and they've had the car on their shores for half a decade longer than we have, and there's a much larger modding community there.

      FWD is awesome on a track as long as suspension and center of gravity are tuned correctly. I agree that he was holding back. I'm sure with the right driver, this car could turn on a dime. But tbh I prefer FWD or even AWD on a track. Easier to claw thru corners. But just seeing him going 75 thru the straights killed me 😂😂😂 like push it man you could have hit 95-105 easily

    • @theredline
      @theredline  5 років тому

      David Dawson We definitely hit 97 MPH on the longest straight a few times on this track. The 500 just doesn’t really feel composed at those speeds bc it sits up so high and the back end starts to dance when you slam the brakes at those speeds. We do agree that it wasn’t fair to make the “FWD sucks” comments since this car isn’t exactly the best representation of that. We’ve driven a Civic Type R on track a few times and it was absolutely brilliant. However, our preference is still RWD or AWD because we like having the ability to steer with the throttle when coming out of corners.

    • @_dmfd

      @@theredline I agree, I wasn't hating! You do great reviews man, just didnt seem very comfortable here, which I can understand since of the understeer and inefficient seats. Would have been nice to see you push it a lil harder on camera tho. But also, I understand these press events, and the nerves you get when driving a loaner on a track. Like I said, I prefer AWD for tracks. Great review as always man!

  • @Maxx61

    Two more weekends at the track and you'd have it down. First drives with the Abarth for inexperienced track drivers can be a bit overwhelming due to its driving position and understeer but those ass wiggles are half the fun. It's not lost on anyone that for most of your drive, you had a smile. That's no coincidence. It's that much of a blast.

    I did a few mods such as rear torsion bar upgrade, short shifter, lower subframe/side brace upgrades, and improved strut hats. I also replaced the stock shocks and struts with KYB Excel-G budget shocks and struts which greatly softens the suspension so that road bumps don't shake the fillings out of your teeth. 😁

    The EU Version is better/different. We have a facelift, which looks different. Some people like it, some don't.
    We also have a small muffler and I do mean small. The sound isn't much differnt. The 2019 Version can be bought with the record Monza exhaust (a valve exhaust). It has more grunt and sound even better. We have the 2015 Version (Series 3) Turismo and we installed the Record Monza exhaust a week ago. It has a mechanical valve on our model. The newer model has an electronic valve.
    The EU model has LED lights in the front (daylight driving lights).
    Also there's an option for a 7inch screen on the Infotainment with Apple Carplay/Android Car. There's also no 6 Speed Automatic in the EU.

    I owned one of these for a little under five years. It has three problems, one of which it can overcome. Because of how they orient your seating position in the vehicle, it's kind of like you're stuck in a shallow well on a kitchen chair. While it's always a fun, rocket roller skate, it's never NOT a fun, rocket, roller skate. It doesn't 'flip' into modern commuter car--ever. And yeah, it's stylish and retro, but the plastics and build quality are as cheap as they get. For example, the mouse fur covered roof panels framing the canvas cabriolet top consistently shimmied out of their seam with the cabriolet top track and I'd have to shimmy it back in and Super Glue it.

    I own a 2018 Fiat 500c Abarth. I have no issues with the seating position. I sunk it as low as the seat will go and it's fine. I don't feel like I am out of sorts height wise. Mind you, I'm 6'5" 220 lbs. I drove a Fiero for 4 years, that was tight. The Abarth with the seat all the way back is too far. I have it up enough for me to comfortably reach the steering wheel and shifter and drive it 120 round trip every day with no discomfort. It do wish the wheel would telescope a bit. But it's not a deal breaker, I also own a 91 Eagle Talon Tsi, that car I feel, is damn near perfect for the driver. But the Abarth is my daily and I love hearing it roar down the highway.

      Most commonly an alignment issue (toe front and rear causing scrubbing) or injector issue. Maybe marginal wheel bearings would also contribute. Otherwise less common could be one of the 3 pressure sensors (map, tmap, and baro) or upstream O2 sensor throwing off your mix

      @@bsd103 I do think that I run a little rich, can especially tell during idle. Also, this one threw me for a loop: just leaving home and everthings ok, randomly temp gauge will shoot up and it says high coolant temp turn of engine immediately, stalls out. I start up again and everything is ok. Its happened 4 or 5 times now. only warning being that the exhaust sounded a little bit off, not as great as it normally sounds ( noticed in hindsight)
      I know the engines not actually overheating, recently replaced radiator and other cooling components. Other than chalking it up to electrical issues, I have no clue

    I mean, the abarth is a great little car. 4 seats, has a trunk with foldable rear seats, make orgasmic sounds. Many people hate on it, when really it should get tons of respect. Like that thing still gets 25-34 mpg and its a sports car, that you can still find parking for.
    if you own a home with a garage , and dont travel far, get a 500e. Those come with full abarth suspension, just a tad slower and top speed limited. Pro :: electricity is cheaper, so youll save money,
    Con :: about 100mile range, and it doesnt make ABARTH noises.
    Question to think about :: although gas is expensive, the abarth does get 25-34mpg, so long trips is very doable.
