Unfortunately for McCain he never had a great chance. The economy was going to hell under the leadership of a Republican President who's approval rating was less than 30% at the time. That’s why they tried to suppress the vote, that’s why they shunned away from democracy, that’s why they support racism.
Why does 2008 election footage look like it came out of 1998 and while 2012 footage looks like modern times? We must’ve made the jump to HD somewhere around 2010
Yeah 08/09 was when stations were beginning to switch to HD and the 16:9 aspect ratio that we know today. Back then "Presented in HD" was something that they proudly promoted and boasted. By 2010/2011 it was fully implemented.
Besides for the fact it might have been recorded on videotape (or at least low-grade digital), this clip was uploaded to UA-cam in 2008 when the max resolution was 480p, AKA standard definition.
hd film was already a thing in the 60's and 70's but it's just typical for the 80's, 90's and early 2000 that quality is like this because in this case this footage has been taped on older television that predate flat screens. just like low quality cameras were on early cell phones in those times. Same goes for youtube in early 2000 when you couldn't upload high quality like you can now.
I know what you mean. I don't remember stuff back then being this grainy. But now that I look back at it, I appreciate the early to mid 2000s aesthetic of television.
I’m a liberal and this is the finest speech I’ve had the pleasure of hearing in my lifetime. God bless John McCain. Thank you for your service and may you Rest In Peace.
Even from across partisan borders, McCain's speech is stirring and inspirational. The clear humility and respect for both his opponent and the American people and system put Trump to shame. I was too young to appreciate this moment as it happened, but it's already abundantly clear that Trump will never be even close to the man McCain was.

This man was truly bipartisan. He worked many times across the aisle. To him it didn't matter if you were black white Republican or Democrat. He worked for our country. Bless you John McCain. Godspeed sir.
Even though I voted for Obama, this hurts to watch. John McCain is an American hero, and an example of a man who truly serves his people and loves his country. John McCain has never looked to put blame on another for his mistakes, and takes the blame for even what can be easily proven wasn't his fault. When Sarah palin was introduced to that level of power, it paved the way for such a minority of a party to put budgets, debt payments and our national economy at mercy. Though the country that night was wrapped in awe and celebration, something truly radical was brewing under the surface, something that began to emerge in the forms of erupting boos at every mention John McCain made about the newly elected African American president. The quadrupling of right wing militias in obamas first year of presidency. the more united and powerful forces that seek to keep Americans armed. Glenn beck becoming. national figure. Sharon angle and Christie odonell becoming national candidates. And a case called citizens united. What John McCain introduced to America, can never be reversed. Our current path sealed. Our future forever radically altered.
This wasn’t a concession speech. Although he lost, he was actually congratulating America.

Think about it he is old enough to have fought a gruelling war where he was pow, survived that shit, witnessed a civil rights movement and saw before his own eyes the culmination of all of that.
