  • We found Richard Ritz (Missing Person) underwater in his Toyota 4-Runner who had been missing 9-months earlier in September 2020. One of the clues we had to go off of was that Richard was last seen at 501 N Lombard and the statement he had made.
    "If I ever go missing, just know that I'm on a really long fishing trip"
    Armed with that information, our team chose Cathedral Park Boat Ramp as our first place to search where we identified 4 targets underwater using sonar.
    Two of the targets looked fresh on sonar, while the other two we could tell had been buried in the silt, indicating a much longer time underwater in the 10-20 year period.
    We suited up to scuba dive on all 4 targets, however, the first vehicle we chose turned out to the vehicle in question, finding the Toyota 4-Runner upside down, along with a matching license plate.
    Once identified as Richard's vehicle, this becomes a crimes scene, calling 911, standing back, and offering our services if they need assistance.
    With a very competent dive team, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Dive Team took over, recovering Richard from the 4-Runner and bringing answers to the family that evening the family so desperately needed these past 9-months.
    =============
    Richard Ritz, 74, was last seen in September of 2020 leaving a bar in the 9500 block of North Lombard Street.
    Richard Ritz described as a white man with a short fu-manchu-style mustache. He stands approximately 6-feet-1-inch tall and weighs around 160 pounds.
    Police said Ritz was last seen wearing khaki pants, a red plaid flannel shirt, a Lakers baseball cap, and black tennis shoes. He has several tattoos, including "HATE" on his right knuckles and "LOVE" on his left knuckles.
    It was believed that Ritz may had been living in his vehicle, which is a matte-black 1999 Toyota 4Runner SUV with Oregon license 716GPE. Previously, police said the license plate was CK65017, but officers later updated the information.
    Ritz was known to frequent St. Johns, Sauvie Island, and Scappoose, according to law enforcement.
    =============

      I would say this is another example of how law enforcement resources need to be re-evaluated. I do believe there's a way to focus more on peace keeping while maintaining force against violent criminals. We spend far too much on military and not enough on schools and community building. States and counties should have adequate resources for their law enforcement districts to do, on a regular basis, what these men do. Period. End of story. Our budgets are all out of whack and it starts with the military industrial complex, but is couched in legalized bribery and the lie that corporations are people. Peace.

      @@barbazzallc Sadly it isnt so simple. If military units stationed in the US could be involved in these search and rescue missions, tons of assets that are gathering dust could finally be put to a good use. But, the military isnt allowed to be activly used on a "civilian" base outside of exercises and special circumstances (besides the national guard which is a different thing entirely).

      Totally agree. They could have use AWPs lift bags, thus making extraction easier, not having further damage to vehicle or environment. Then could have done extraction on land. They didn't even bother to pick up the trash or debris that floated out of the vehicle onto the shore. Kn my opinion, very unprofessional of the law enforcement dive team. Thanks AWP for always being professional and offering to assist local agencies and more so giving closure and compassion to the families.

All they had to do is at least put divers in the water to search for possible vehicles close to the dock which wouldn’t have taken to long in this case, look how close it was from where they were standing smh

      Unfortunately, since the report was for a missing person driving a certain vehicle, when ID is made on the vehicle and reasonably, the person could still be in there, it becomes a legal matter and HAS TO BE CLEARED BY LOCAL OFFICIALS. It just adds another layer of delay and investigation in case there is proof that a crime has been committed OR that is not a crime scene. These things rip out the heart, stuff it back in until the investigation is complete, then rip it out again. IF A CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED it is better to take the extra time to catch perps, than let them go free when procedure isn't followed. Condolences from here, no one deserves such an end.

    • @deathproofpony
      @deathproofpony 2 роки тому +111

      @@genekimberly68 I agree, but there's a big difference between following procedure and being outright rude and hostile to the team. We've seen police officers do both - some are happy to have the help and do what they can to assist. Others are resentful towards AWP because it could make the cops look bad. They're angry and terrified that someone else could do their job for them, especially if they've already "searched" an area and AWP finds something the cops didn't.
      They should be glad to have the help and actually care about some closure for families and friends of missing victims, but some are such angry, bitter narcissists that they resent the efforts of AWP. And that's sad.

There’s no greater gift to their family members that this. I’ve recovered more than 3 dozen losses and have seen my fair share of gratification from the families. Great job by Jared and his entire team!!! Where can I make donations to? Have you reached out to scuba gear, sonar & marine companies for sponsorship, endorsements or grants of above equipment? Technique and skills? Get a small boat, put sonar on it and check: It's not exactly rocket science. There are three vehicles sitting right off the boat dock--easily found. But they certainly perform better than most agencies. Simply put it's down to experience, and quality of equipment.
      most agencies train and train with not always the most satisfactory equipment to only ever test those skills and their equipment in real world environments at best a few times a year.
      Seems most agencies get but hurt when a group comes in and shows that the right skills and equipment arent always in the hands of the people who should probably have them aswell. Which can be understood but the anger shouldn't be put back onto those who has the skills and equipment and time.

      @Kabuki Kitsune So when police actively try to stop them from helping a family find their son, when the mother KNEW where he was under the water, and they have already done an exploratory dive & believe her to be correct…when police actively try to prevent their work after months of abusing the mother, and they say something that conveys their frustrations-that makes them “amateurs”? Or “disrespectful”? Or just that the media picks that up, people become justifiably upset, and THAT makes them disrespectful?
      How many examples of police callousness, apathy, incompetence &/or outright cruelty must you witness to admit that American LEO systems, as we know them, do not work for the vast majority of Americans & the issues that affect us? They do not meet the needs of most of the populace.
      There’s no profit in finding missing people, apprehending rapists & pedofiles or investigations residential thefts. Takes far more “man hours” with no body to give to (for profit) prisons or to get caught up in the $$$ court system; can’t confiscate the belongings of rapists or pedofiles & sell them at invite-only sheriff “auctions”.
      But if your community is being terrorized by air fresheners or burned out parking lights, police will totally help you. If your son goes missing in your car, even if you know where he is, AVP has shown that police will not help you. Not only not help you, they will belittle & abuse you. Say anything and cop apologists come out of the woodwork.
      Don’t change the system, the system works for me, I don’t care if it doesn’t work for anyone else. I don’t care how many stories we hear from AVP or elsewhere, don’t care about the thousands of rape kits sitting on shelves unprocessed, who cares?! It works for me, if it doesn’t work for you YOU must not be as great or as law-abiding as me. Crimes only happen to bad people or bad parents, right? They don’t deserve help.

Of course she thanked them for founding her son body although the realization that there is no hope he will ever be found alive hurts, but as she said at least the family has answers and not wondering. The confirmed plate gave me chills. years ago I was called to search for a missing person in Texas who had been gone for three months 300 people worked the area where I actually ended up finding him. I’ve done a few missing person cases myself as PI. what you’re doing is awesome! I tend to find that private search groups tend to reach better results because they are not hampered by politics, procedures etc. I recall standing over the cliff where I had found his body and I had chills and my gut told me this is where the person would be despite police and the parents trying to discourage me from searching that area because it was searched very thoroughly several times over but that’s exactly where I found him. stick with your gut it’s usually right. One of the cases I worked was in Portland and the person ended up being found in the river which is what I anticipated prior. what many people don’t know is there are sooo many people that show up in the river as accidents or suicides in Portland main river. f a team were to work this River regularly they would solve many incidence. Statistically when men decide to commit suicide they are likely to end up in their favorite places which tend to be outdoor locations such as favorite campgrounds fishing holes mountainous areas. It agitates me that a commonsense approach to where this person may have ended up was not followed up by Law Enforcement apparently and leave it to a private citizen to discover it.

I’m pro law enforcement in most instances, and think the “defund the police” sloganeering is ridiculous. She/we were there for like about x13 months an it's like you are just in a sort of daze. Your not exactly living but just existing. Going through the motions.
      Bad times indeed.
      I figure it must be so bad for those w/loved ones (especially partners) suffering w/Alztimers .
      I just shutter to imagine such a hell that it must be. Or to have someone just gone missing like in this case.

      I think law enforcement just can't keep up with all the stuff going on in their area

      They do this everyday so they are well practiced to not miss anything, the law enforcement (from what I have seen from other videos) have equipment and a diving team but it seems like they don't do it everyday. I think if the law enforcement worked or collaborated with people like this, they would be more successful and they can then also do mulitple cases at a time if the amount of cases it the problem.

    I am always so very impressed with you guys. Not because of the detectiving, search or diving, but because of the way you interact with the families. Despite being a youtube channel that relies a lot on its viewers, you are very respectful of families without turning it sensationalist. So much props for that. Others would try to milk every moment of screen time with the families, or put crazy music on it while bringing in the emotional angle with short clips of generic statements like 'he was such a good father' and 'he just went out to the post office' and whatever else you see on TV for every single story to make it about the family. But you guys, despite doing a great thing and obviously focusing on meeting the needs of the family when doing your job, have your channel focus 90% on the actual diving. This is not a given, and needs to be lauded. Props to you guys!

Even just attempting means so much to the families and brings the rest back a bit more faith in humanity. I don't know if it's been said before, though knowing a few myself: shoutout to the dispatchers that take the calls in these cases. They're more invested than simply transferring the call or sending out an officer.
