I completely understand what you said in regards to The Good Thieves. As someone who suffers chronic pain, I’ve dealt with my fair share of people who just expect me to “power through” pain, so rep like this can be harmful to an extent. As much as I appreciate a character with chronic pain being able to do anything, as it can be quite cathartic, at the same time I don’t want people to think I can do everything at all times or just ignore my pain.
Chloe Brown is sooooooo good!!!! I loved that book so so much 💕 And I’ll have to check out The Silence Between Us. Great video, Izzie!

What an awesome video, thanks for explaining your perspective. As an able-bodied person, it's sometimes hard to ascertain how accurate disability rep is, so it's important to hear from own voices reviewers.

I often feel like i'm screaming into a void when talking about disability and disability in books too. Especially because I read all over the place and when I pick up something about disability it's like...crickets...and every time I lose subs. Every single time to the point it's disheartening as it feels like people saying "how dare you talk about disability! That's so negative! I don't wanna hear about that stuff!" and maybe i'm being too sensitive or exaggerating but when it's again and again...I can't help but wonder. It's always awesome to find others who talk about disability and disability in books as well...though I can't think of anyone who does that isn't also disabled themselves so I guess it's like we're all screaming into the void...

You’re definitely not exaggerating or being dramatic! It is really disheartening and there is still a disappointing amount of ableism in the book community, despite it being one of the more “accepting” communities😔 i agree that a lot of the time it feels like able bodied people think we’re asking for too much just to express our frustration about our disabilities🙄 I will continue to scream into the void, though, so I’m always here❤️

I really loved Chloe Brown! I have chronic pain though not as severe as hers, and it was very special to me to see that in a romance heroine, and to see how her love interest didn't consider her a burden.
Elle is super awesome, and I really liked the representation in A Kind of Spark as an autistic person. I didn't go to public school, so I fortunately didn't have to deal with such horrible teachers until I grew up and went to college, but I'm very horrified and yet not surprised that what happened with teachers in the book was heavily based on what happened to Elle in her childhood.

Same!!! I don’t think I can recall ever reading about a character with chronic pain who ends up in a relationship🥺 it made my heart happy! I’m glad you loved A Kind Of Spark, too! It’s definitely not surprising that a lot of it was drawn from real life, sadly😔

Love this video! I am a huge fan of Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz because I felt very seen by it, as my chronic illnesses affect me similarly to the main character. I also enjoyed that the main character's brother in You Should See Me In A Crown by Leah Johnson had a chronic illness. Disability rep in fantasy is pretty rare so I really appreciated the rep of anxiety and migraines in A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown although I'm not own voices on those. I also found it fascinating that the main character's 'power' in the fantasy book Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth was inspired by chronic pain, even if this isn't mentioned explicitly in the book itself. This is the first video of yours I've watched and I can't wait to watch more!

Sick Kids In Love is one of my fav books! It’s really the only book that I’ve felt seen by! I had no idea the Songs of Wraith and Ruin had that rep?!??! It’s going to the top of my tbr, I have migraines and anxiety so that sounds amazing! Also had no idea about carve the Mark, thank you for letting me know☺️ I’m so glad to have you here, thank you for your support🥰

Nijkamp is kind of pronounces Naicamp, English does not have the ij sound, but ai is kind of close
Edit: The ie in Marieke is one sound, but I can’t think of how I’d descibe it to an English speaker

@Iskra D I’m not familiar with any slavic languages I’m afraid. Though now that I’ve had a bit more time to think, I think in english you’d write the ie as ee or like, that would be close
