Driver's Eye View (New Zealand) - Takapau to Palmerston North via the Manawatū Gorge

  • In this video we return to our train having enjoyed lunch and wine tasting at the “Oruawharo Homestead”. This time the lead engine is DB class locomotive No.1254 with 1955 vintage General Motors diesel locomotive No.DA1410 assisting.
    Passengers were transported by bus to “Silver Fern Farms” sidings where the special excursion train, the “Hawkes Bay Wine and Food by Rail” was waiting to take passengers back to Paekakariki with intermediate stops for passengers wishing to alight closer to home. We ease out of the sidings onto the Gisbourne Line (PNGL) heading back towards Palmerston North via the Manawatū Gorge.
    The Manawatū Gorge is no longer traversed by road due to a severe landslip that closed the road to all traffic, with no likelihood of it ever opening again, today the gorge can only be seen from the railway or river itself. The first part of the journey to Woodville passes through rolling hills with lofty viaducts carrying the tracks high above numerous river valleys, shortly after Woodville we enter the gorge where our driver cautiously eases his train along a ledge cut into steep gorge side and over a succession bridges high above the river with breath taking views of the gorge fore and aft. As we leave the gorge we pass the construction site for the new bridge that will carry State Highway 3 on a new route avoiding the gorge. Finally we join the electrified North Island Main Trunk for the last few kilometers of our journey into Palmerston North. Please look out for the next part of this trip - Palmerston North to Paekākāriki.

      Hello Anna, there aren't many passenger trains through the gorge, maybe 2 or 3 a year. It's one of my favourite NZ train rides and I always try to time my visits to coincide with one of them. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.

    Another masterpiece of a video.... One thing that I'm happy to note after watching this video; is that the sheep/lambs trespassing onto the railway in NZ are every bit as dull as those who used to trespass onto the railway on my patch in South Wales UK... I simply lost count of how many sheep/lambs (unintentionally) went under the wheels of my train & thus failed to make it to the dinnerplate in my 40 years of driving trains... Now happily retired...

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  16 днів тому

      Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride, sheep tend to be a bit daft wherever they happen to live. The scenery in this part of New Zealand is similar to Wales as is the weather. I guess the sheep that perished under the wheels of your train didn't go to waste, it’s surprising how quickly the carcasses get stripped by other animals. I hope you are making the most of your retirement.

    Tim says it in the description, but for those interested the road (SH3) in the Gorge permanently closed in April 2017 due to multiple slips. Originally they were going to clear it and re-open as normal but due to constant ground movement, work was stopped in July 2017 and the decision to close it indefinitely was made. Now it's left for mother nature to reclaim. You can see at 1:30:30 the new expressway in the hills currently under construction to bypass it (and then 1:49:30 for the other end). I went on it for my work late last year to do some testing and one thing I can say is it's quite steep! I think it's supposed to open mid next year. Will be a blessing because that Saddle pass alternative is a nightmare!

      The ballast serves a number of functions including drainage as well as holding the track in position. It rains a lot in New Zealand, maybe that has something to do with the generous ballast shoulders, hopefully someone who actually knows the answer will reply.

    Your videos are too contrasty: we lose the vision of clouds and shadows.
    To avoid this, it is important to
    - DO NOT USE the default setting, especially with Gopro, but the flat profile (never "natural" or "gopro)
    - Set the exposure correction to -1.5 or -1.0, in flat profile, it will be brighter than in Gopro color profile, and in addition, we will have the clouds in the sky correctly rendered (rule which has remained unchanged since the slide from the 1960s)
    - Check that you are importing, in the case of 8-bit Gopro's rush, the complete profile (PC color, not TV color !), for exemple the VLC software does not know how to read the PC-color and does not render the video as original , but more contrasted and clipped and can cause you to miss this error because you only see part of the values and may believe that the lack of dynamic is due to a small sensor, without ever seeing what your camera is capable of .
    Almost 9 out of 10 videos or even more are of low quality due to lack of knowledge of these essentials. One thing is certain: you should NEVER stay on the default settings, they are more and more influenced by Instagram or story videos, and not adapted to the landscape.
    Sincerely.
