When I was 5 years old I first met my oldest brother who is nearly 20 years older than me. Here was this big rough looking man and all I knew about him was that he'd been in the Army in some place called VietNam and then afterwards on an island called Guam , which for some reason in my 5 yr old mind I imagined was something like the island where King Kong lived . It was years before I really got to know my brother and came to understand what he'd been doing in the years before I met him . Now were good friends and he often will hear or see something that reminds him of his experience in the jungle , and he will tell me a story that always has my total attention. I have so much respect for my brother and all the people who fought there , whether they chose to or not.
I’m happy you got to meet your brother….my oldest brother (who was also 20yrs older than myself) died of wounds 4 September, 1968. I never got to meet him.
My father was a UH-1B gunship platoon leader with the 155th Aviation Company during 1966. Flew primarily at that time around KONTUM, PLEIKU and BAN ME THUOT. He was my hero and died in 2011. Still is. I am blessed to have 65 reel to reel tapes that he sent to the family describing his war and the hazards of being a combat helicopter pilot.
I was in Nam in 1970. I was on the USS America (CVA-66) so I never experienced any of combat and danger that Mr. Downs did. I did go into Da Nang on a mission for 3 days. We had a communications problem with the Marines. No one tried to kill me, as far as I know. I feel guilty because folks like Mr. Downs made great sacrifices and I didn’t. You folks are heroes. Thank you for your service and your sacrifices.
Sir, you have nothing to feel guilty for! You were doing your job. Being a Navy man just had you doing different tasks and details. The boots on the ground were Army and Marine units, and that was their job. It (for my mind ) was your fate and you served with honor. My 4 uncles over there would love to have the time reversed because 2 of the 4 saw heavy combat. Danny, was Air Force and one would think he was pretty safge. Wrong. He fought sappers nightly hand to hand at his air base. He committed suicide in 1992. Another was a 4 year POW survivor in Japan, and another was at the battle of the Chosin reservoir in North Korea. Memories that haunted them all their lives.
I have two late grandfathers who both served in the Pacific theater. My paternal grandfather was a 20 millimeter (pea shooter) gunner on the USS Idaho (Big Spud). He told me that he never forgot the smells. My maternal grandfather volunteered in the Utah Army Guard when he was 16. His mother had passed away when he was 10 and his dad just shook his head. He had graduated high school and was a Sargent when he was called up for 1 year of active duty in 1940. The Army was reorganizing from a 4 square division to a triangle. Anyway he took part in guarding the west coast and after Pearl Harbor ended up at Schofield Barracks as part of the 25th Infantry Division. He was an aid man (aka medic). He was able to go home after Luzon, and aside from a written history didn’t talk about the war. The part of the war he wrote about the most was his time spent in New Zealand after Guadalcanal and New Georgia. The division was on R&R and him and a buddy spent time with a farmer and his family working on the farm. But then it was back to training. I respect those who have served.

Such a shame that people were forced to do this to each other in the name of ‘fighting communism’ on one side, and fighting for your country’s independence on the other. Fighting for your own country’s independence and freedom can never be wrong. The Vietnamese were never truly communist, it’s just that they were the only political party that promised the people the freedom they so clearly deserved. Quite frankly I’m glad the Vietnamese won, they deserve all the freedoms that Americans so proudly claim as their own.

Powerful Story
It teaches us an important lesson about the reality of warfare.
Could someone give me a list of this authors list “in order of publication. Many thanks in advance.

I worked with a man that served aboard a helicopter gunship as a gunner. He relished talking about the villagers he killed.
It's a good job for a psycho
Yes, there were some psychos in the war. Sadly the VC killed many more villagers than any psycho did.
@@CraigGagnon-f7q not really. The US killed millions
And the vc were fighting for their country. The us were imperialist aggressors
@@DrLoverLoverso the vc killing fellow countrymen is justified? Dimwit
This sounds like it's going to be good.

A great book, great reading and a stark reminder of not to fuck with a people fighting for independence
😂 in case you didn't get the memo, we lost the war and North Vietnam conquered South Vietnam.
What memo? Vietnam fought for independence and won. And who are we? The overwhelming majority on earth is not from the US, including me. Now go back to school little boy

Aussie army Vietnam if you fall asleep on picket duty you get 3 months in the lockup on shit food regardless of position or rank no "i'm sorry sir or last night we had a rough time" 3 months mandatory ?

Thanks to lbj and the American way
Hand salute.
I was a grunt in Vietnam 1971. I relate.
Brave baby boomers I salute them all 🇺🇸
Hmmm, millennial, Gen X and Gen Z served, fought, died and sacrificed in a 20 yr war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Every generation has answered the call of war

How lucky we are…
No doubt. Those that see war up close are never the same.
Oh.....? " US forces " haven't fought a war in " defense " of America or its people for over 100 years......

we?
Communism is here too, only they call it social justice. We were lucky.

Greetings from Ireland, i worked in NY state in 89 with quite a few vet's as they were all working on a summer camp to reduce their prison sentence and the majority were black, used like toilet paper by capital hill
I can see you believed them.
As everybody knows: do not be a civilian or An infantryman!!
Much reapect for Vitenam vets, they fought a worthly fight.

Were the south not Vietnamese also
@@alexapperley9081 yes they were. It only became two countries in 1954 after the French were beaten at Bien Dien Phu, before that it was one country. After the division there was supposed to be a nationwide reunification vote. This was blocked by the South and the US so it never took place. They just swapped France for the US as coloniser.
@@The-Real-Ando Coloniser 😂😂 thats a good one maybe the south didnt want to fall under communist china and soviet influence
@@alexapperley9081 are you seriously saying that the US wasn’t a coloniser? If so then you don’t have any grip on reality. Look at Vietnam now, they are against Chinese expansion in the South China Sea which coincidentally ties in with US policy. That makes your comment about Chinese influence look pretty stupid. You clearly know nothing about the whole situation. I’m guessing you’re American and cant take criticism which makes complete sense.

The fellow who insulted you was an obvious coward. Indeed it is specimens such as him who spawned the current generation. Those who are terrified of spiders and get this, clowns. Really? Clowns? Hold your head high sir, you have no cause to be ashamed for anything you did in the service. All I can say that you were shooting at the wrong people.
