I opted for what seemed natural for me. Whatever works for you is fine but it's not a bad idea to apply some sort of standardized "rules" to your picking, especially when tackling fast or complex passages. Things like alternating down and up strokes and outside picking can help to smooth out things.
Lots of computer fan noise here so I nixed it with ReaFir in Reaper (DAW). Sounds a little weird because of the sheer amount of noise and my speaking voice is overloading the mic too. Oh well. Gets the point across so I decided to post it anyway.
