Chris Degarmo (lead guitar) & Geoff Tate were Queensryche! The music they created together was magic!
When DeGarmo left the soul left the band, IMO. He was a great songwriter and guitarist.
@@BigTulsa have you checked out the EP Chris did with his daughter a few years back? The Rue? ua-cam.com/video/0CdZOZGmWdU/v-deo.html
Lol....nah. QR was Wilton and DeGarmo with a formally talented vocalist named Geoff Tate.
Have a feeling DeGarmo was the glue that held everyone together, once he left things started fracturing
@@Houlgravely do you think the band would have reached this stage without Geoff? I don’t. Even if it was Todd. Geoff possess a magic in his vocals.
The negative comments from my amateur-singer-ex-wife about Geoff Tate's voice were some of the first proof I had of marrying the wrong woman.
She was a lizard person. Forget her.
I am glad you ran fast and ran far.
Good Lord! His voice is ANGELIC! js Here's your sign 😉
Geoff Tate's voice was my favorite voice from that day. I've seen them live a couple times and they are flawless.
I caught them live in Pensacola Saenger Theater 2008ish. Under 3000 seats. It was kinda sad but they rocked that small house.
Ive literally fallen in love with his voice. Same with Sarah Brightman and Leah Salonga. Im agnostic but they have to be how angels sound like.
@@markalden7848
As I get older I can appreciate the smaller venues. They are more intimate, more engaging
Geoff Tate had an incredible voice back in the day. Highly recommend any track off the Operation Mindcrime or Empire albums to react too👍🏻
As a fan of Queensryche, saw their Promised Land tour. His voice is unmatched
YESSS mindcrime is awesome!!
Yeah, the whole Mindcrime album is a must listen.
For me is still the best album in the history of rock
He already did a video for that very early in his channel history and he eviscerated it....
"This song/whole presentation is too classy for the MTV music awards"...Exactly how I felt when I watched it live in 1991. 😆
I remember when I first heard this song we had just come back from Desert Storm and I was in a bar in the Philippines when this song was played and was blown away. I went and bought the cd the next day. Was a die hard Queensryche fan before and this album solidified it. Still love Queensryche but cannot watch them without Geoff Tate and am disappointed at what the other members did to him and ultimately firing Geoff it was sad. Still one of the greatest bands to come out of the 80's.
Man, Geoff Tate in the early 90s does not get enough credit for how truly handsome he was. Beautiful man.
And beautiful voice. I love this song because you hear more of his lower register than you do in many other songs. Because the thing is- he’s not a tenor. He’s a baritone. He has a lovely warmth and depth to his voice. And while he keeps that as he goes higher, it’s his low notes that just travel right through me. I love a good low note.
I have 2 friends who worked this show and they told me there was NO TRACK, he said that the rehearsal was crazy. In fact, there is an interview where they were talking that Geoff demanded it be live and BECAUSE they were live they were rushing to get Geoff and the orchestra set. Search for the interview.
I heard a story that either Chris or Mike Wilton had a bad technical problem right before they were supposed to start and fixed it just in time to start playing the intro.
@@VespoLiveGaming That is true. It was Mike. they were scrambling to get his tech glitch fixed. ALL of that sound came from the orchestra. He also said there was another 5 or 6 strings that could hardly be seen AND the standup bass behind Mike on stage was 1 of 3. Phenomenal performance
I heard they refused to do the show if they couldn't play it live. Refused to fake it like most bands would do. But that's how Queensryche was back then. Can never replace what the original 5 have done.
That masterpiece was written by degarmo and covered beautifully when tate sung the hell out of it. Silent lucidity just gloriously flawless pull at the heart ❤
colour me skeptical - the band live i absolutely believe, but not the orchestra, unless maybe there was a simultaneous orchestration track with live playing. Great if im wrong, but im just never going to believe that orchestra sound just came from the stage
When another professional singer says “Rock me sexy Jesus” about another singer, you know Tate’s singing is from out of this world.
just read this comment as he said that! 🤣
Correction Ken, November Rain sounds like Silent Lucidity, Queensryche beat G'n'R to the punch by a year.
Yup. I was thinking that but I had to break out the google to make sure. :p
Yep but Axel had been writing November rain since appetite for destruction and there is a version from then floating around...
he actually said, "sounds like November Rain all of a sudden. This is where Guns & Roses stole this sad (or maybe bad) lick from.
i think the sound nothing alike other than the fact that the early 90’s was a time for rock ballots
He did say thats where GnR got that sound
This band was too classy for MTV back then. Agreed! So talented!
I've seen them live back in the late 80's, early 90's. Geoff's voice live, is something very special & extraordinary! The range & emotion in his performance is exceptional!
Some people forget before this they were a metal band, this was the ballad era of the band
It's unfortunate what happened to the original band, and their new singer is a good fit...but still there is only one Geoff Tate. He was replaced, but cannot be replicated.
I like that. He was replaced but cannot be replicated. That nailed that then! Salute to Geoff Tate.
Just like Steve Perry in Journey!
I still dress like a pirate for all my guitar solos😉🤘✌️
Back when watching MTV was fun.
The Hollywood composer Michael Kamen did the orchestration and conducting for this track and performance.
Addendum... The low to high vocal range also was prevalent on the mindcrime album. Just an attestment to his amazing vocal range
YES - this is *WAY* too classy for an MTV rabble!
The entire Empire album remains excellent, & I still listen thru it, *as an album* ,on the regular.
....& despite the complexity of their music, they were also the tightest act on the bill the one time I saw them live at Donington Monsters of Rock '91 with the Black Crowes, Motley Crue, Metallica, & AC/DC. Tremendous band in their day. :)
Since 80's I saw, I am telling you they are no joke.
Queensryche is one of my favorite bands. I was lucky enough to see their “Operation Mindcrime” rock opera live at House of Blues with Pamela Moore playing Sister Mary. Awesome performance. I recommend you listen to it
Probably one of my top 10 favourite ever albums🤘🏻
Yes I like that song too and I like the video they made I love all the music they produced they are such the good artists how about the warning it was the first album I like it absolutely awesome I like to be able to sing like that 🤘🏼
Suite Sister Mary... is definitely their most underrated song. Especially the LiveCrime version
silent lucidity be bout lucid dreaming and geoff tate's vocal range and breath control back in the day was epic
Another great orchestration by the late, great Michael Kamen. One of the unsung heroes of progressive rock and metal in my book.
His work on Metallica’s S&M concert was amazing.
And not to forget his work with Queen on "Who wants to live forever"
And a great composer and film composer in his own right.
I was lucky enough to see them four times live! . I refuse to listen to their stuff without Geoff Tate . Seen them twice and buffalo, once in Pittsburgh, and once in Canada. But never With an orchestra behind them
Absolutely right. Too classy for MTV even way back in 91. Mtv not worthy of such a band.
Never met anyone who doesn’t love this song.
Silent Lucidity was produced before November Rain
Hence him saying that's where GnR got it from.
@@stanleymyrick4068 I didn't hear that. If so my bad
That was very nice. If you decide to do another Queensrÿche song, I would recommend the MTV Unplugged version of “Killing Words.” I’d love to hear your breakdown of his vocals on that.
this!
I love that song!!!!
One of the best unplugged and he really nailed it for sure
He killed that one better than Studio
Version
Still waiting for the reaction on QR song Suite Sister Mary 🙂
Geoff Tate in his prime was AMAZING! I got to see this band 5 times. Tokyo x1, Colorado x2, Seattle x2. Geoff could do things vocally that most singers could only wish for. If you really want to get 'into' Queensryche then you NEED to listen to "Operation: Mindcrime" in its entirety. There are live versions of this available (I have 2 of these) and it IS one of THE BEST Concept Albums EVER put out. Once you listen to this...then go on to Empires. 2 of the concerts I attended had the same set list, the 2 songs from their debut EP: Queensryche, 3 songs from The Warning, 3 songs from Rage for Order, then they did the full Operation Mindcrime followed by the entire Empire. 2 of the LONGEST and BEST concerts I have EVER attended. The LAST song for both of these concerts was Silent Lucidity. If I could go back in time, I would want to attend these concerts again. Once you have listened to Operation: Mindcrime and Empires, I recommend their EP...followed by The Warning, then go onto Rage for Order.
REACT to, "Eyes of a Stranger," Geoff kills it in that song.....that album is when he was quite young, before he lost his voice due to age.
My fave reaction comment was about it being too classy for MTV awards. Lmao.
Metal singers are underrated. Even ones that growl. It's hard af.
Growling is not singing, just a singer that can't sing who struggles to try and sing so only option is noise
@@drakkecastaneda2335 David Draiman disagrees :D
@@drakkecastaneda2335 David Draiman, Corey Taylor, Alyssa White-Gluz, Tatiana Shmaylyuk, Floor Jansen, etc. Would beg to differ.
The strings were probably live. Michael Karen was a pioneer in marring an orchestra with metal music. He also pioneered recording techniques. He scored the soundtrack for last action hero check it out.
Michael Kamen, I think your auto correct played havoc! Lol! I loved the stuff he did with Eric Clapton, especially the Edge Of Darkness soundtrack
Your rant was very valid. We sometimes forget how tricky performing was a few decades ago. We should also accept that many things on stage are done for our entertainment.
This song of theirs has remained one of my favorites over the years. One of the few songs I've ever come across about lucid dreaming. It's also the only song I can think of that plays a portion of a classical song at the end (Brahm's Lullaby, on cello). A bit of trivia, Chris DeGarmo (songwriter of this song and lead guitarist in the band) made the following comment in the November issue of Kerrang! magazine back in 1990: "‘Silent Lucidity’ is probably one of the most genuinely out there things we’ve ever done. It’s about what they call ‘lucid dreaming’. Or ‘dream-control’. Basically, just opening up the doors to your subconscious mind, and learning how to master your dreams. Actually be able to steer and control them."
My sons' (both of them) lullaby!
Quick comment. You were looking for a bass...and, he's standing on the stage directly in front of presumably the first chair first violin.
Scott Rockinfield sounds great on drums
Its for sure a backing track... Queensryche still use it today...
Always brings me tears for some reason. The truly gorgeous voice of Geoff Tate! One of my all time favs from back in the day.
agree. I had a big ol' cry some years ago while this was playing. so I played it again
Tate STILL jas an incredible voice today considering what his voice has been put thru over the last 40 plus years
He had an incredible voice in his prime. Check out the MTV Unplugged version of "I Will Remember " for more mellow stuff.
ua-cam.com/video/RrSCtjFlsrc/v-deo.html
I also recommend their cover of Scarborough Fair...
Una banda adelantada a los tiempo y no tan valorada como corresponde...
Gracias eternas Cris y Geoff...
Gracias Queensryche.!!!
And when u have artist this great anything possible they won with this song just appreciate it please
I know this comment is 2 years too late but it is what it is. This was child’s play for Geoff as his range is off the charts. I noticed that this is the only Queensrÿche w/Geoff Tate that you’ve reviewed which is a shame because you are seriously missing out on this man’s voice. “I Don’t Believe in Love”, “Anybody Listening”, “Suite Sister Mary” and I could go on and on. I think he ranks 14 of the top 100 voices of rock. Seriously, treat yourself.
Yes indeed those are backing tracks. Duran Duran was using them back in 1980. They would use half-inch tape for the tracks.
@2:00, ish... Yes ALL the extra noise is why I have always jammed the MV for my music for the most part anyway... But with this one especially, the MV for it is incredible!! And helps "paint the picture" of the Lucid Dreaming he's telling about 😉💯🎸✌️🤗😘
Geoff vs. Axl.....like class vs. trash!
Geoff Tate voice is the true sound of queensryrche, shame is is not back in this band
I am sincerely shocked that you aren't a bigger Queensryche fan. Geoff Tate's voice was a beacon in those days.
@FatalPies Yeah...always remember that John McDonald was compared to Geoff Tate, not the other way around bud.
I was thinking the same thing. If you're a vocal coach, wouldn't you have at least been "told" about Geoff Tate?
The "coach" rolls his eyes to the audience.
You said it right. He's flawless
Hard to describe how insanely popular this song was back then. Played on MTV all the time!! They are Incredible!!
Still on my Favs playlist
True. This was the height of their popularity. No new album until 1994 and by then grunge/alternative had such a grip on the music scene that it was a lot harder for mainstream rock to keep their solid footing in the industry.
Hey, in my opinion, the greatest queensryche is take hold of the flame, live in Tokyo. Check it out, I think you'll agree
When 1st heard him sing in the 80's, I couldn't figure out why he wasn't more famous. I knew as a teenager that he had one of the best voices of that time. I still have all of his early records and knew he was way ahead of his time. I still think he should have been way bigger than he was back then.....😀
I remember this broadcast and to this day, what impressed me the most was how Tate (the singer) had a purposely diminished stage presence (sitting, slumping, very little arm movements) while the band got the attention. Even in other concerts, he does the same. Compare this to other bands where the singer feels he/she has to always be "on" even during solos, etc. by the other band mates. I don't know why the band broke up, but he seems like a class act and frankly, his voice is the reason this song and their other hits worked. A different singer can sign the same songs and replicate, but he seems to me to be the heart and soul of the band, which you can't replace.
I think that everything IS AMAZING in THIS SONG ..
I'm shocked at how powerful his voice still sounds slumped over and sitting.
Amazing Performance. This song always takes me on a journey. And I love the ride 😁
Tate learned to play the trumpet as a child. That's one of the reasons why he has such excellent breath control.
His Aunt was also an opera singer, and I believe he learned a thing or two from her.
@@MR-ml2po I've read that several times as well.
dio also used to play the trumpet. Now i understand why they sing like a god... flawlessly..
He plays saxophone too.
"Anybody Listening" and "Another Rainy Night" from Empire are two of my favorites!
I would add just add "Jet City Woman" to my own list of favourites off of this album.
"Rock me, sexy Jesus."
"Sweet sugar parfait."
What a stupid expression
Best! Gotta remember that one.
Hamlet 2
Great reaction. Geoff Tate was my vocal idol back in the 80’s and early 90’s. As far as the technology with click tracks; it was around back then. I was singing in club touring bands back then and the one I was in in 1990-91 we used a click track because some of the songs we did had so many keyboard and strings that our keyboardist would use our sequencer for some of the parts for playback while he played other parts live. (Just for certain songs) Also after firing a bass player mid tour we sequenced the bass parts and therefore had to play every song to the click track until we shipped another bass player up to us. Some drummers back then had a hard time playing to a click track. Anyway, Short answer yes that tech was being used back then. 😎🎤👍🎼🎶🎸
You should really listen to "Eyes of a Stranger" from Geoff Tate's live acoustic session at The Eagle 106.7 in San Antonio to hear what he sounds like nowadays.
The November Rain comparison is valid. Michael Kamen orchestrated both
The man is a vocal God. There is no comparison.
Geoff Tate vocals are amazing Heavy Metal/Rock produce some of the best vocalists to grace our screens Bruce Dickinson’ Ronnie James Dio’ Michael Kiske’ Rob Halford’Meat Loaf 🤘
This is live folks.... 🤣🤣 Thanks for pointing it out 🤣🤣🤣🤣
WHY would I hit that subscribe button & notification bell when I have not seen seen your video?
Edit: I have now watched and am subscribing.
This song brings tears to my eyes. This was my brother-in-law`s favourite song and he passed away a year ago
Sorry to hear that
Thank you! This was fantastic! Subbed.
Love it! What a journey back to the past. Man I played the BUilding Empires DVD so many times. It was such an inspiration for my bandmates and I. I really dug the Unplugged sessions too. I saw that Ken did a reaction for I will Remember. I think that he would really appreciate the dynamics of Della Brown.
Another Queensryche song that I would suggest you to check out is Della Brown from the queensryche-mtv-unplugged session
He is singing live over the original track, the music isn't live. Well, it is but you can't hear it. As you said.
You are watching the tv broadcast, it wasn't always as live as people thought, there was always the 'exec mix' which is the added instruments before it went to air on tv. In saying that, they did have some pretty good overheads, fx to enhance was very very common practice by the mid 80s, especially adding slight delays with the delay tail in a different tuning to sound 'bigger' or 'more', by the time 90s were coming around a lot of these techniques were repackaged and renamed for the digital era that soon took over. Now you can do anything.
I saw them open for and embarrass Kiss in 1985 on Kiss' Animalize tour. It was The Warning tour for Ryche. They were absolutely phenomenal. Kiss wore bandanas and I can't remember much more about that part of the show.
Scott is wearing headphone for one reason only. A backing track. Yes, it was done back then, albeit more crudely than today. But it's prolly a Cd with the orchestra and ambient voices, noises and b vox.
He probably has the headphones on because of the big amp right behind him.
My favorite is "I will remember" also from the MTV session. Beautiful song.....would love your take on it.
I have know many people to miss Geoff whisper "help me" (9:42).
One of the most powerful and entertaining groups to see live in the 80s and 90s.
“Rock me sexy Jesus…” 😂🤣😂🤣
I’m dead.
Geoff Tate was opera-trained before he went on to Queensryche. I always thought he made the right move. No offense to opera.
I love your tie. Odd I know. But it's nice.
This isn't even the best display of his vocals.
Rock me sexy jesus ...Comment of 2020
This is a great live performance but I still prefer the official version. The Queensryche concerts I saw in the 90s still stand out as my favorite concerts. Geoff is not only an amazing singer and performer but the band was right up there with him. It was so entertaining, the time just flew by and those concerts were over 2 hours long. I've always thought how lucky it must be for the people in Geoff's life who get to hear him sing just on a whim. It's been 30 years and I've never tired of the Empire and Operation Mindcrime CDs (I still have my original CDs.
One thing about this song and the subject matter. Back in the 80s, lucid dreaming exploded in the psych world. Every therapist, counselor, group leader, etc. was trying to teach us how to do lucid dreaming. I mean it was nuts how hard they were pushing us to learn it. (I never could). It exploded on the scene after the dissertation by Stephen LaBerge at Stanford University. It's an fascinating subject but seemed to be a bit fad like at the time. It faded out after awhile but I've been seeing more research papers on lucid dreaming in the last few years.
So last thought on this performance and the performance on the grammys that year. Geoff Tate has said in interviews that although other performers at these shows were not actually live - there was a lot of lip syncing going on, Queensryche insisted on doing the performance live and refused to do the song unless it was all live. He said that the production people would go crazy after Queensryche made this demand but it the end, they got their way. Thank god.
and to today, Geoff still has it and performs it so well. this is a timeless song. check out a few live versions of this song from 2022, 2021, even 2020. Geoff is no longer with Queensryche and hasnt been for years but he still performs this song and its beautiful
And there's a whole lot of Geoff to focus on...
His voice is flawless nothing this man could be taught he’s perfection
He was taught though. By Maestro David P. Kyle. Who also taught Ann Wilson, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, as well as Tony Bennett, Liza Minnelli and Bing Crosby, among other greats!
@@SheReapsI was talking bout this guy making the video that by the point of this song’s highlight he couldn’t have taught Tate anything I wasn’t referring to his vocal coach when he first started singing but a coach can’t magically pull a great singing voice out of thin air they have to have something to work with they fine tune singers voices teach them techniques coaches are a Hugh help but I’m guessing Tate could sing like this with or without a coach his voice is to gorgeous just like my favorite MR layne Staley that man’s voice will never be duplicated but no sweetness I was talking bout this man making the video
Cool. Layne Staley had the same singing teacher as Geoff. As well as Ann Wilson of Heart and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. Maestro Kyle taught them all.
@@SheReaps there all amazing singers some of my favs 💙
Please ken , don’t try to imitate the high notes of Geoff tate )))
Geoff Tate is naturally a Baritone.
Geoff has Always been my favorite singer. He's is a trained vocalist but he is so damn smooth. U nailed it when u said it seems easy for him, Back in the 90s it was😁. He's in his 60s now and still Great, just not 90s great. But who is😁. Great vid bro👍
Geoff;s voice is so insane. It must be like how angels sound.... and that super high "IIIIIIIII....:" at the end after Geoff showed is range before that. Also, i kinda hated that this was more about the band and the live sound mixing rather than the actual vocals. I apologize if Geoff's vocals were previously covered.
Check out Ronnie James Dio with Rainbow singing "Mistreated" live 1977 ..well worth it!
Queensryche was known to have used backing orchestral or keyboard tracks since 1988 or so. They probably played to a backing string section layer for this performance. Probably.
Back in the day there were monitors.
I usually like you..
But you're so off
Operation mindcrime one of the greatest movies ever put on cd. Chris del garmo's masterwork
I love that description. Just brilliant from start to finish
@@LotsaFails I can't really take credit axel rose said it first
@@davidwright8371 Really? Never heard Axel say that. That's great to hear though. It is truly a brilliant record.
@@LotsaFails yes very early on when it was first released. I have to say queensryches empire tour when they did operation mindcrime in it's entirety was the best concert I've ever seen.
Never heard that. Except that Geoff Tate wrote Mindcrime words and music almost in its entirety. If I remember right (I bought this CD off the rack the day it came out) he did it on a weekend in a hotel room.
Many many years ago, I went to a live concert at the Richfield with Suicidal Tendencies as the opening band. They had released Empire and of course this was the crown jewel just like Queen had Who Wants to Live Forever on the Kind of Magic album. Geoff had the entire audience mesmerized and we were listening with baited breath. When he and the band performed Empire, he coaxed us all into singing the East-Side/West-side by indicating each side of the stage, and then downtown as the center. I will never forget that experience. I had seen Madonna in 1986 on the Who's That Girl tour, and Geoff beat her hands down. To this day, I can pick out Geoff's voice and I own all the earlier Queensryche albums until things went sour. My favorite song is Roads to Madness but Suite Sister Mary is my second favorite. Do look for more of their songs. You can see the progression of their talent as the albums continue as they mature as a band. As I mentioned in the other video comments' section (Chop Suey), I subscribed today to see what else you react to! Thanks!
At first I didn’t like them and then I seen them live open for Metallica. I immediately became a fan. I’ve seen seen them twice and both times they were incredible live.
1988/1989?
