Over the years I’ve searched far and wide for all the Bill Evans content I could hope to find on UA-cam and tonight I discovered this one for the first time, another brilliant gem 👌
My favorite jazz pianist. I love great Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum and so many more, but Bill Evans' playing creates such an enjoyable atmosphere that evokes so much emotion. He has technique to spare, but uses it sparingly. He was always in the moment and created such beautiful music. I doubt there will be another.
Bill Evans should be regarded among the greatest pianists of history. He played jazz in so higher level and his interpretations of the standards are perfect in a jazz context. He has great compositions and a great legacy in music that goes beyond jazz style.
Evans remained close to his background of a classically trained pianist. Even as he experimented with his interpretation of jazz music, it appears that his fans were attracted to his expressions of classical music performed with a modern touch.
@@algonquin1832 It is indeed a fascinating "interplay" of its own, isn't it? His foundational, classical-music training well-primed him for expanding the jazz idiom with his own innate uniqueness. And the jazz idiom (art as real-time creative process) freed him beyond the existing constraints of classical music. Without both, Evans's artistry would not have reached the fuller beauty, richness and power that it did. A true master. He worked within two disciplines, moving beyond both.
No one understood music more than Bill. His phrasing has such incredible depth it's hard to believe it could exist. A 16th note pause, accenting the 5th of a chord, holding a note just long enough to let it resonate perfectly, simply no one better ever. Thank you so very kindly for sharing this amazing archive.
I've heard many versions of "Time Remembered", and this is among the best. Other favorites are the one on the album "Loose Blues" with Zoot Sims and Jim Hall. Another is the trio version on which Eddie Gomez plays his solo arco. It's worth looking for.
Ohhh my dear Bill your fingers move in such a way.... makes me tremble. In my eyes you are the best piano jazz player in history! Your touch its unique!!!

Eddie G. was the best soloist IMO.I like his pickup under the fingerboard. He has recognizable style.Within a couple of bar into a tune,I can usually say "yeah that's Eddie Gomez alright".
Holy Shit. Best Live Evans ever? I mean he even made Time Remembered fun! This was during that golden time when the Gomez trio was still fresh, and on a good night, Evans could play like A GOD. Whoever convinced him to eventually give up the swinging attack he uses here on Someday my Prince Will Come... well, it's a shame. Unfortunately, the exciting pulse of this set all but disappeared in his later years... :(
I have heard Evans since 1965. I think that Eddie Gómez after Scott LaFaro esa The perfect partner flor hum. R.I.P. Master!!!( Was The perfect partner for hum)
Wonderful post. Thanks so much.BTW, although the info in the video says that the first tune, "Quiet Now", was written by Bill, it was actually written by Denny Zeitlin. I will say, however, that just about everything Bill played ended up sounding like he wrote it--which, IMO, is how it oughta be. I luvvit!! ☺
Agreed! Much superior to Paul Motian, who I always thought was a metronome on automatic. Hasn't much improved in his old age, either. This was one of Evans' best trios. Really outstanding. Bill always seemed to have a grudge against Marty Morell, always had a hard time giving this gentleman much deserved accolades. A really great jazz drummer!
His improv on “Prince” around 24:13 is breathtaking. How could he invent these beautifully complex passages and perform them flawlessly going at 150 mph?
I played "Time Remembered" and this is a beautiful version, as are other songs of his from this period I also played, and he did here. He invented Ravel, Debussy, and Satie into jazz. The whole classical harmonic incorporation of impressionism in classical music to jazz comes from him. His drug problem always reduces my opinion of his musical genius. Because it's sad. And it needs to get out of music. It does not make you better.

His hands were bloated from his liver, and an almost life long bout with low grade hepatitis. His earlier heroin use only made it worse. By the way, he was drug free during the early 70's when this concert was performed. Actually was for this entire period up into the mid to late 70's when he got into cocaine. Wow!
That's a privilege for sure.

"Not their best concert"--hmmm. I can't get enough of this.

Eddie's sound is marvelous, and Marty's brushes are my favorite...What an artist Bill Evans...
Thanks for the reply and I enjoyed your promo video.
Thank YOU for posting this wonderful video (and checking out my music).

Bill Evans' soul lives on in his beautiful music. May he rest in peace. bb
This is one of the best versions of "Time Remembered", and there are several wonderful ones.
According to Wikipedia drumming master Marty Morell was the longest standing drummer in the Bill Evans Trio for eight years.
