Wise tells the story that he was told by a psychic that he would meet his life partner on the set of his next movie - Sense and Sensibility. He went out with Kate Winslet first, and as he tells it she was bored to tears with him. I'm paraphrasing of course, but that's the self-deprecating gist of his story. Lol. Alls well that ends well. Personally, I think he aged beautifully - love him as the aloof Sir Charles in Cranford.
Personally, I would have run right past all those fools and thrown myself at Alan Rickman's feet. By far the most handsome and that voice..... swoon 😍. Anyone else? Can't be just me. ❤
The moment when Elinor goes from crying to beaming with happiness is one of the finest acting moments captured on film. This film is truly a master-class from a truly brilliant generation of English actors.
Here’s the thing - as cold as it is, Lucy was a poor woman who happened to have connections with high society. She knew how unstable her situation was and that the only way she could get stability was to marry well. As much as we want to hate her for almost stealing Edward, she was only doing what she could to protect herself

This was my first Alan Rickman movie, and I fell in love. Our mom did too. One lovely night, we went to see him on stage in "Private Lives" and waited outside for him to come out, along with a bunch of other people. He stopped to talk to our mom directly about New York and was just a lovely man during the little talk. Emma Thompson wrote a book about the making of this movie, which is a lot of fun. She said that Ang Lee suggested an exercise where all the actors would write something pertaining to the character they were playing. The actress playing Lucy Steele wrote a letter in character of Lucy which Thompson reprinted in the book because it was so hysterically funny and true to Lucy Steele.
Love at first glance! I first fell in love with Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. All of my friends were raving about Kevin Costner but I was the sole person saying, but that Sheriff of Nottingham is AWESOME! I'd love to see a copy of the letter you mention. I love that you love Mrs. Jennings. And I love how you lean closer to the screen whenever Mrs. Jennings is relaying the gossip. I can see you in an Austen novel gathering around the ladies letters hearing all the juicy details of the lives of friends and family.
HAHAHA --- I noticed I did that when I was re-watching the premiere with you all and I was shocked at my need to get into the gossip. Lawd! I looked so funny. I literally said Kemi lean back for goodness sake - it's a movie!
Mrs. Jennings, while not perfect, is 100% a great auntie whose intentions were completely pure. Yes the gossipy side of her is not the best, but she completely loved her nieces and was always out to protect them.
Finally someone reacts to this masterpiece! In the book Colonel Brandon is a gentle rock but rather invisible and unremarkable - the sensible choice but so very easy to be overlooked and while Alan Rickman plays him exactly like that, I remember when seeing this movie for the first time - from the moment I saw him watching Marianne play - I was immediately "Girl are you blind?! Seriously, how can you not see how he is looking at you? Can't you see what is right next to you?" Alan Rickman will always be "the" Colonel Brandon for me no matter how many adaptions there are. Many people know him only as a "fantastic villain", but he was one hell of an actor with a great sense of comedy, character roles as well as s romantic leading man. Suggestion for another of his unfortunately less known but fantastic movies - Snowcake - with Sigourney Weaver, who he suggested for the role and brought aboard.
This is Peak zaddy Alan Rickman. And he is absolutely the BEST guy in this movie. Love his voice too, he could read me the phone book for a bedtime story.
So many Harry Potter actors in this: Professor Trelawney (Elinor), "The Fat Lady" painting (Mrs. Jennings), Madam Pomfrey/Hogwarts healer (Mrs. Dashwood), Dolores Umbridge (Mrs. Palmer, nee Jennings), and of course Professor Snape (Colonel Brandon).
1:05:56 He doesn't love Lucy - but he made her a promise. And he's too honourable to go back on it just because he's changed his mind. It fits with what we know of him. He wouldn't, I don't think, want to see any woman disgraced or humiliated because her engagement was broken off just because of money. Plus, if a man gave a woman a promise of marriage and then broke it, it could end up in court (breach of promise cases), the few bits of freedom women had was that they were the ones who had the power to break an engagement.
SO GLAD to see you finally see this gem. No disrespect to 95's Pride & Prejudice of course, but after the many years before it came out, this movie by Taiwanese filmmaker, Ang Lee, felt like it cracked some secret code to doing period pieces, as witnessed by the many that followed. This movie still feels so fresh; every line uttered, every character, every bit of casting, still holds up. And awards galore...! Emma Thompson rocks! And it was killing me so much during this watch, not being able to place the neighbour, Sir Middleton. I had a scene of his from another movie playing in my head and I couldn't place him... I finally cracked and had to look it up... he was the head of the ministry of magic 😂😂😂
How many guys will flirt with innocents for fun, corrupt them as far as they can go, then run away to play with someone else? Some women do the same, not realising, caring or thinking of the harm they can and do cause. It's one of the least endearing of human traits. The books say they go a lot further nowadays, but even then, when the system made it extremely hard, for women to survive, with no inheritance, no real way to earn a living, and reputation, a vital part of being respected, and getting on in life. Entitled people thought nothing of destroying others for fun. Look up Helen Reddy's Ruby, and Meatloaf's 2 ot of 3, aint bad.

Last comment, with some fun and not so fun facts: 1) PLEASE find and watch the deleted scene with Edward and Elinor. It's so sweet, just didn't fit with the pacing of the ending. 2) Kate Winslet was only 19 when this was made--it was only her second film and she killed it! Both she and Emma Thompson were nominated for acting awards. 3) Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay for this film, and she won a bunch of awards for it. It's a fairly faithful adaptation of the book, but Sense and Sensibility isn't as dialogue-heavy as Pride and Prejudice is, so she wrote most of the dialogue herself. Emma gave a delightful speech when she won the Golden Globe for best adapted screenplay, about what Jane Austen would make of a night at the Golden Globes. She also wrote Edward with Hugh Grant in mind! 4) Thompson's diaries from when the movie was filming have been published. They're a good read, but sad because she had recently had a miscarriage, was going through a divorce from Kenneth Branagh (due to him cheating with Helena Bonham Carter), and was understandably having a very hard time. But she met Greg Wise (Willoughby) while filming, and they have been married for 20 years now.

It's quite funny in Shakespeare in Love because Imelda Staunton is playing the heroine's nursemaid and her husband is playing the actor playing Juliet's nursemaid - I don't think that's an accident.
If you can believe it, Lucy Steele's behavior is even worse in the book. she breaks up with Edward IN A LETTER after she'd already gone ahead and married Robert! She's truly the worst.

Imogen Stubbs, who plays Miss Lucy Steele, is also the lead in a movie version of _Twelfth Night_ you might want to check out. The director of _Sense and Sensibility,_ Ang Lee, assigned the actors to write something from the point of view of the characters, and Imogen Stubbs won for her very catty letter to Elinor. It is included in the screenplay and diary of the film (book). Edward was starting to tell Elinor about the engagement, which he very much regretted at that point, when Fanny interrupted.
She used to be married to Trevor Nunn, who also directed the Twelfth Night movie. He's a veteran director who directed many plays and musicals in the past. He directed the stage version of Cats and the original stage production of the 1985 musical Les Miserables. He also put the lyrics to the famous Cats song Memory and contributed some lyrics to the famous Les Miserables song On My Own.
Best film adaptation but I believe BBC best TV adaptation is Pride and Prejudice. Also love the mainstream TV adaptations of Persuasion, especially one with Sally Hawkins.
I love this film. I was a huge Alan Rickman fan before I saw this and just completely fell in love with his character Brandon. Like you say such a selfless gentleman and Alan Rickman looking more gorgeous than ever made it impossible not to fall for him lol! Elinor was another character always putting others needs and feelings above her own, beautiful that they both found happiness.
Miss Grey, the woman with Willoughby at the ball asks who they are. He says "Acquaintances from the country." She sneers "Wearing their country fashions I see." If you have the chance to buy the DVD, it has an incredible commentary by Emma Thompson, where she talks about writing and acting in the movie. She talks a lot about the social manners and customs in the Regency period.
I would highly recommend watching Imelda Staunton in anything other than Harry Potter. She's a fantastic actress and so lovely. I was an extra on one of her movies and while I didn't get to meet her my friend did, she said she made sure to come over to the other SA's and chat to them and was super sweet. There's also a vid on YT of her performing Rose's Turn and she's amazing. 😊
She’s a brilliant singer too. She was Mrs. Lovett with Michael Ball as Sweeney Todd and she sang as good as him when they sing together. Considering Michael Ball is a huge favorite of musical fans (he was the original Marius for Les Miserables and he was also in Phantom of the Opera among other musicals), it speaks the level of how accomplished as a singer Imelda is also.
I knew you would fall in love with this movie as well. I adore this adaptation. The book is a bit more complicated (in certain plot points) but it is a wonderful book. Jane Austen was a fantastic author who wrote about the struggles of being a woman in her time. Your reaction was everything I was hoping for.
I love this story so much; as a young adult I related to Elinor always carrying the emotional burdens of those around her and burying her own feelings. This Jane Austen story helped me grow as a woman and gave me hope, I'm so happy you enjoyed it! Another favorite movie of mine is the 1993 adaptation of Shakespeare's "much ado about nothing". 4:09 Women in England could legally inherit. Unfortunately, many large estates were left to the eldest male hair by the choice of either the estate holder or by a previous one as indicated in the entail (which could last typically 3 generations). Estate inheritance was a little complicated and certainly biased towards men but English women were not prohibited from legally inheriting their families’ wealth, and some did during those times, but it was dependent on the wishes of the property owner (or a previous one, in the case of an entail). The ultimate goal was to keep the estate intact (not having it sold off for parts basically), so only one offspring could inherit. Younger sons didn’t inherit same as the daughters. Also, the desire was for the state to be held in the trust of a person bearing the family name, and since daughters typically married and took their husbands’ names (in a sense joining another family) that made them less attractive as inheritors. Just wanted to explain what little I know about this!
You might like "Truly, Madly, Deeply", a great film with Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson. Earlier than this, about1990. You'll need the tissues, though! Another good film, though pretty much forgotten, that has many of the same in this cast is "Peter's Friends". Stephen Fry is Peter.
This is my favorite Jane Austen novel. Everything is so pure and the main love is family love how Elinor and Marianne make each other stronger and care for each other and I love love love Brandon
This is probably my favorite movie of all time. The music, the cast, the writing, the cinematography….just perfection. It also launched my lifelong adoration of Alan Rickman. 🥰
I remember one of my friends borrowing my copy of the novel "Sense and Sensibility," by Jane Austen, and he returned it the very same day. I asked what happened and he said that some of the single sentences were each almost a paragraph long and he lost the plot halfway. It was only after we watched this film together that he went back and attempted to re-read the novel and he admitted that it was much better than the film. I've noticed that the number of people reading has drastically reduced these days and it's quite a shame really, because sometimes, nothing beats a well-written book. And with E-books, and e-readers, we can even find rare novels whose printed versions were sometimes impossible to find. On the other hand, I've noticed that there are a few from the younger generation who have taken up reading once more which is a good sign.
then again - I did read an article somewhere where someone said that people have been predicting the end of books since the radio was invented. Oddly enough, back then novels like the ones Jane Austen wrote were looked down on by some. Books were read yes, but some people favoured only factual books and argued that they would encourage laziness and slothfulness and would encourage young ladies to do nothing but lay around on couches reading. I.e. Mr Collins protesting that "he never read novels" - she usually is able to fit in a few snubs to the people she didn't like Ironic isn't it?

CF captured my 12 year old heart back then and he still has it today all these years later 🤣😍 Anyway, my point is I’ve a feeling you’ll adore the miniseries!

Lesson learned from 'Sense and Sensibility' by Jane Austen and from 'The Pursuit of Love' by Nancy Mitford: Never expect love to happen in a certain way or with a certain person, you'll either spend your life waiting for something specific that will never happen, or you'll end up making or narrowly avoiding making the biggest mistake of your life.
I'm so excited watching this with you I love this film! If you get chance you should watch the 3 part drama North and South, amazing social commentary and you will fall in love with Mr Thornton 🥰
Ang Lee also directed another film where one sister asks another, "What do you know of my heart?"--_Eat Drink Man Woman,_ which I very much recommend if you are okay with subtitles. He also directed _Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon._
Lol! You’re so funny. “I need to be ladylike and not curse because I’m watching Sense and Sensibility”. I love that you did this version of this story/movie. It’s so good and one of my favorites. I really like this genre and love that you enjoy it as well. There is no in between for people. They either find this type of movie boring or wildly entertaining and interesting. There are so many remakes of this movie but this one is one of the best. Some have great casting and are convincingly compelling characters but some have poor casting which makes it hard to watch even though it’s the exact same script. There is another version that I think you’d really like. It’s from 2008 and is a Sense and Sensibility 3 part mini series made by PBS. It’s great!
Mr Palmer and Mrs Jennings have some of the funniest moments in the books, he just does not care about what anyone thinks of him and she thinks he’s the funniest person on earth

I adore Robert Hardy, Sir John Middleton, he sadly has passed on. My most favorite roles he played was: Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, in the 1980’s series “Elizabeth R” He cut such an elegant figure, and his acting was superb. Siegfried Farnon in the 1980’s series “All Creatures Great and Small”. Great acting ensemble. Another great actor, Hugh Laurie, who plays Mrs. Jennings son in law played a marvelous Jeeves. Most of the actors in this movie have been in other movies together, look up “Peter’s Friends” another British gem.
Yes, Robert Hardy was fantastic in this role, Hugh Laurie too. Hugh did not play Jeeves but Wooster. That TV show was really funny and well played - at least the two first seasons. 👍

The Gwyneth Paltrow version is cute, but a little too syrupy for my taste (Jeremy Northam does make a dreamy Knightley though). The 2020 Anya Taylor-Joy version gets my vote. It's such a riot and visually creative!

I also think the Beckinsale version handles Frank and Jane better. While you're at it, there's also a BBC miniseries version from 2009 with Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller in the lead roles. It's great too!
Or at least she stood looking over his shoulder while he wrote it! Willoughby in the book actually comes to the Palmers' house while Marianne is sick, and pours out his tortured soul to Elinor. Thankfully, she send him off without seeing Marianne.

He'll always hold Marianne as the ideal woman, and he did genuinely love her, but he won't be miserable or regretful for the rest of his life. He has the money to live as he likes, and that, by his own admission in the book, was always his chief concern. His wife won't always be in a bad mood. He'll get by. Plus, something the Dashwoods had to admit, Marianne included, that none of this, including his coming to ask if Marianne was ok when she was sick, really makes up for his treatment of young Eliza, running off with her and then abandoning her. He didn't, to his credit, know that she was pregnant when he left her and didn't know how bad things had become for her when he was off enjoying himself with Marianne, but his excuse for that was that he didn't realise that he hadn't left her his address, and added that she could have found that out on her own (which I doubt she could have - a young unmarried girl asking for the address of a man she's not related to?), and to argue that "just because I was a libertine that must make her a saint?" like it absolves him of his responsibility. And as Elinor pointed out "At present, he regrets what he has done. And why does he regret it? Because he finds it has not answered towards him. It has not made him happy." And Marianne had to admit "My happiness was never his concern".

Willoughby was going to propose to Marianne, but when his aunt said he wouldn't inherit, he knew he wouldn't have any money. So he had to find someone else who did have money. If he could have married for love purely, he'd have married Marianne. But Brandon was a safer option, not just with money, but with fidelity, honesty, stability etc. Not sure Willoughby would have been tbh lol

One of my favorite movies. I love Jane Austen and her characters. My favorite adaptation of hers is the 1995 Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. I think that is an exquisite telling of that story. This is great too. I also love Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma. Another great mivie, not Austen but Shakespeare, is Much Ado about Nothing with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh and Denzel Washington. Great reaction
A gorgeous film, and a fitting tribute to the great Jane Austen. I remember at the time, the director, Ang Lee, asked 'can everyone in England act?' You can argue about the relative ages of the actors, but they played their parts beautifully, and Emma Thompson's script was truly wonderful. And she found her soulmate in Greg Wise.

I came in her room and she said "mommy is going to watch her movie now sweetie." I said "okay mommy may I stay?" She said "of course." I sat through the whole movie and didn't budge an inch. The only time I made a comment was during the ball scene I said "pretty dresses mommy." She told people I sat through the whole movie. Some didn't believe her but its true. I did. Long movie to sit through for a 3 year old. An intuitive told her I had an affinity with Britain and was deeply connected to the country. My moms dads parents emigrated from England to the USA. They died British subjects. They never became American citizens so my mom is rooted in the culture as well. :) Jane Austen is truly an amazing author. Her characters really come to life so well! My 2 favorite novels of hers has got to be Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey. This movie has it all. Heartbreak, sadness, love lost, and love found again. Scandals. You name it. You're gonna need some tissues. You will love this movie! Cast was perfection! Kate Winslet for so young did an amazing job. Everyone was phenomenal! Alan Rickman did an excpetional job in this movie as Colonel Brandon who was also the Sheriff in Robin Hood 1991, and Snape in Harry Potter. "my question is WHHYYY" you always nail it exactly. i want to add, my parents used to watch these Jane Austen movies and BBC productions when i was growing up as a little gay boy, and even though i couldn't understand everything going on, i think Colonel Brandon's character really left an impression on me. love might not always be a bright, burning, and dramatic flame, but it doesn't make it any less powerful or beautiful, and sometimes warm stability and a kind, attentive partner who will always stand by your side is exactly what you need, or what you can be for someone else.

Yes, Fanny is a total witch - though we have to admit, her husband didn't need much persuasion to break his deathbed promise to his father. His wife just gave him a little push and......she's an even more selfish person than he is. They're pretty much perfectly suited to each other.
Willoughby’s income likely comes from his wealthy aunt. By her deciding to leave the estate to another relative, it basically means he will have no income. This is especially important because as a gentleman, he likely doesn’t have a profession and thus must marry a woman with a dowry in order to provide for his own future and that of whoever he marries. Since Marianne has no dowry, he can’t marry her because then neither of them would have even the basic funds for daily life. 29:54

I have the same reaction everytime I see snape (Allan) in this movie. I was very familiar with this movie before the Harry Potter Movies came out and LOVED snape from this movie. He makes your heart melt. And on that final HP movie when you find out he’s in love with Lilly, his character here always pops into my head.

Also the 1995 BBC Pride & Prejudice. The movie is beautiful yes, but it just can't compete with the series for faithfully placing the book on screen.
Yes, Colonel Brandon is the man to measure all other men by. In so many subtle ways he shows how absolutely humble and selfless he is. When his friend asks him about liking Marianne, he says she would never think of him that wsy "All the better for her." The way he steps aside when she falls for Whilloughby. Even when he peeks in after bringing her mom to her, watch the way he starts to bow out of the doorway, fully expecting and content to remain unnoticed and unappreciated, until she calls out his name. Just the epitome of selfless an d humble.

That room where they are is for novelty, probably, the Dashwoods are far, far, lower class. You know how people are, dirty looks to the poor.

This was my first Alan Rickman movie, and I fell in love. Our mom did too. One lovely night, we went to see him on stage in "Private Lives" and waited outside for him to come out, along with a bunch of other people. He stopped to talk to our mom directly about New York and was just a lovely man during the little talk.
Emma Thompson wrote a book about the making of this movie, which is a lot of fun. She said that Ang Lee suggested an exercise where all the actors would write something pertaining to the character they were playing. The actress playing Lucy Steele wrote a letter in character of Lucy which Thompson reprinted in the book because it was so hysterically funny and true to Lucy Steele.
Love at first glance! I first fell in love with Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. All of my friends were raving about Kevin Costner but I was the sole person saying, but that Sheriff of Nottingham is AWESOME! I'd love to see a copy of the letter you mention. In the book Colonel Brandon is a gentle rock but rather invisible and unremarkable - the sensible choice but so very easy to be overlooked and while Alan Rickman plays him exactly like that, I remember when seeing this movie for the first time - from the moment I saw him watching Marianne play - I was immediately "Girl are you blind?! Seriously, how can you not see how he is looking at you? Can't you see what is right next to you?" Alan Rickman will always be "the" Colonel Brandon for me no matter how many adaptions there are. Many people know him only as a "fantastic villain", but he was one hell of an actor with a great sense of comedy, character roles as well as s romantic leading man.
Suggestion for another of his unfortunately less known but fantastic movies - Snowcake - with Sigourney Weaver, who he suggested for the role and brought aboard.
In the book Marianne thought Colonel Brandon was too old for her and too serious compared to Willoughby.

He wouldn't, I don't think, want to see any woman disgraced or humiliated because her engagement was broken off just because of money. Plus, if a man gave a woman a promise of marriage and then broke it, it could end up in court (breach of promise cases), the few bits of freedom women had was that they were the ones who had the power to break an engagement.
SO GLAD to see you finally see this gem. No disrespect to 95's Pride & Prejudice of course, but after the many years before it came out, this movie by Taiwanese filmmaker, Ang Lee, felt like it cracked some secret code to doing period pieces, as witnessed by the many that followed. This movie still feels so fresh; every line uttered, every character, every bit of casting, still holds up. And awards galore...! Emma Thompson rocks!
And it was killing me so much during this watch, not being able to place the neighbour, Sir Middleton. I had a scene of his from another movie playing in my head and I couldn't place him... I finally cracked and had to look it up... he was the head of the ministry of magic 😂😂😂

Some women do the same, not realising, caring or thinking of the harm they can and do cause. It's one of the least endearing of human traits. The books say they go a lot further nowadays, but even then, when the system made it extremely hard, for women to survive, with no inheritance, no real way to earn a living, and reputation, a vital part of being respected, and getting on in life. Entitled people thought nothing of destroying others for fun. Look up Helen Reddy's Ruby, and Meatloaf's 2 ot of 3, aint bad.

Lucy in the secret sharing scene is simply saying the 19th century version of "Stay away from my man!"
Last comment, with some fun and not so fun facts: 1) PLEASE find and watch the deleted scene with Edward and Elinor. It's so sweet, just didn't fit with the pacing of the ending.
2) Kate Winslet was only 19 when this was made--it was only her second film and she killed it! Both she and Emma Thompson were nominated for acting awards.
3) Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay for this film, and she won a bunch of awards for it. It's a fairly faithful adaptation of the book, but Sense and Sensibility isn't as dialogue-heavy as Pride and Prejudice is, so she wrote most of the dialogue herself. Emma gave a delightful speech when she won the Golden Globe for best adapted screenplay, about what Jane Austen would make of a night at the Golden Globes. She also wrote Edward with Hugh Grant in mind!
4) Thompson's diaries from when the movie was filming have been published. They're a good read, but sad because she had recently had a miscarriage, was going through a divorce from Kenneth Branagh (due to him cheating with Helena Bonham Carter), and was understandably having a very hard time. But she met Greg Wise (Willoughby) while filming, and they have been married for 20 years now.

The director of _Sense and Sensibility,_ Ang Lee, assigned the actors to write something from the point of view of the characters, and Imogen Stubbs won for her very catty letter to Elinor. It is included in the screenplay and diary of the film (book).

Best film adaptation but I believe BBC best TV adaptation is Pride and Prejudice. Also love the mainstream TV adaptations of Persuasion, especially one with Sally Hawkins.
A comfort film for me too. Actually have put this on at night to fall asleep because it is such a quiet film, and Alan Rickman's voice is so soothing.
I love this film. I was a huge Alan Rickman fan before I saw this and just completely fell in love with his character Brandon. Like you say such a selfless gentleman and Alan Rickman looking more gorgeous than ever made it impossible not to fall for him lol! Elinor was another character always putting others needs and feelings above her own, beautiful that they both found happiness.
Miss Grey, the woman with Willoughby at the ball asks who they are. He says "Acquaintances from the country." She sneers "Wearing their country fashions I see."
If you have the chance to buy the DVD, it has an incredible commentary by Emma Thompson, where she talks about writing and acting in the movie. She talks a lot about the social manners and customs in the Regency period.
May I suggest "Howard's End" (1992) with Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anthony Hopkins. Another outstanding Emma Thompson film.
And “Remains Of The Day” with Thompson and Hopkins.
I would highly recommend watching Imelda Staunton in anything other than Harry Potter. She's a fantastic actress and so lovely. I was an extra on one of her movies and while I didn't get to meet her my friend did, she said she made sure to come over to the other SA's and chat to them and was super sweet. There's also a vid on YT of her performing Rose's Turn and she's amazing. 😊
She’s a brilliant singer too. She was Mrs. Lovett with Michael Ball as Sweeney Todd and she sang as good as him when they sing together. Considering Michael Ball is a huge favorite of musical fans (he was the original Marius for Les Miserables and he was also in Phantom of the Opera among other musicals), it speaks the level of how accomplished as a singer Imelda is also.
I knew you would fall in love with this movie as well. I adore this adaptation. The book is a bit more complicated (in certain plot points) but it is a wonderful book. Jane Austen was a fantastic author who wrote about the struggles of being a woman in her time. Your reaction was everything I was hoping for.
I love this story so much; as a young adult I related to Elinor always carrying the emotional burdens of those around her and burying her own feelings. This Jane Austen story helped me grow as a woman and gave me hope, I'm so happy you enjoyed it!

Estate inheritance was a little complicated and certainly biased towards men but English women were not prohibited from legally inheriting their families’ wealth, and some did during those times, but it was dependent on the wishes of the property owner (or a previous one, in the case of an entail). The ultimate goal was to keep the estate intact (not having it sold off for parts basically), so only one offspring could inherit. Younger sons didn’t inherit same as the daughters. Also, the desire was for the state to be held in the trust of a person bearing the family name, and since daughters typically married and took their husbands’ names (in a sense joining another family) that made them less attractive as inheritors. Just wanted to explain what little I know about this!

This is my favorite Jane Austen novel. Everything is so pure and the main love is family love how Elinor and Marianne make each other stronger and care for each other and I love love love Brandon
This is probably my favorite movie of all time. The music, the cast, the writing, the cinematography….just perfection. It also launched my lifelong adoration of Alan Rickman. 🥰
I remember one of my friends borrowing my copy of the novel "Sense and Sensibility," by Jane Austen, and he returned it the very same day. I asked what happened and he said that some of the single sentences were each almost a paragraph long and he lost the plot halfway.
It was only after we watched this film together that he went back and attempted to re-read the novel and he admitted that it was much better than the film. I've noticed that the number of people reading has drastically reduced these days and it's quite a shame really, because sometimes, nothing beats a well-written book. And with E-books, and e-readers, we can even find rare novels whose printed versions were sometimes impossible to find. On the other hand, I've noticed that there are a few from the younger generation who have taken up reading once more which is a good sign.
then again - I did read an article somewhere where someone said that people have been predicting the end of books since the radio was invented.
Oddly enough, back then novels like the ones Jane Austen wrote were looked down on by some. Books were read yes, but some people favoured only factual books and argued that they would encourage laziness and slothfulness and would encourage young ladies to do nothing but lay around on couches reading. I.e. Mr Collins protesting that "he never read novels" - she usually is able to fit in a few snubs to the people she didn't like

CF captured my 12 year old heart back then and he still has it today all these years later 🤣😍 Anyway, my point is I’ve a feeling you’ll adore the miniseries!

Never expect love to happen in a certain way or with a certain person, you'll either spend your life waiting for something specific that will never happen, or you'll end up making or narrowly avoiding making the biggest mistake of your life.

I love that you did this version of this story/movie. It’s so good and one of my favorites. I really like this genre and love that you enjoy it as well. There is no in between for people. They either find this type of movie boring or wildly entertaining and interesting.
There are so many remakes of this movie but this one is one of the best. Some have great casting and are convincingly compelling characters but some have poor casting which makes it hard to watch even though it’s the exact same script.
There is another version that I think you’d really like. It’s from 2008 and is a Sense and Sensibility 3 part mini series made by PBS. It’s great!
Mr Palmer and Mrs Jennings have some of the funniest moments in the books, he just does not care about what anyone thinks of him and she thinks he’s the funniest person on earth
Please consider 1995 Pride and Prejudice. 🙏🏼 It is faithful to the book and, well, Colin Firth is an amazing Darcy. I would really love to get your take on that adaptation.
I love this movie. It's one of my go-to comfort films. The BBC mini series is also excellent and helped me understand the story a little more thoroughly since there's so much packed in. I really enjoyed your reaction. Thank you!

Colonel Brandon is the ideal man and Alan Rickman was perfect in that role.
Miss Grey said, "Wearing their country fashions I see...", when she saw Marianne. She wanted to mock the Dashwoods as being below her in status and fortune. She DEFINITELY forced Willoughby to write those letters.
It's actually explicitly stated in the book that she did that.
I adore Robert Hardy, Sir John Middleton, he sadly has passed on. My most favorite roles he played was:
Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, in the 1980’s series “Elizabeth R” He cut such an elegant figure, and his acting was superb.
Siegfried Farnon in the 1980’s series “All Creatures Great and Small”. Great acting ensemble.
Another great actor, Hugh Laurie, who plays Mrs. Jennings son in law played a marvelous Jeeves.
Most of the actors in this movie have been in other movies together, look up “Peter’s Friends” another British gem.
Yes, Robert Hardy was fantastic in this role, Hugh Laurie too. Hugh did not play Jeeves but Wooster. That TV show was really funny and well played - at least the two first seasons. 👍
This is such a beautiful film, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it too! I would recommend North and South, the BBC adaptation, as one to watch in the future.
I like how you catch all those subtle little things you pointed out --- Ive seen this movie soooo many times but never noticed that Lucy flashes that handkerchief with Edwards initials on it -- Nice catch --- Oh someday you must do Emma another Jane Austin masterpiece -- you would love it too -- I cant choose which one is best because I love both versions equally --- So you might have to do both LOL --- Oh when you recognized Umbridge I almost fell off my chair -- Love you Dearie
The Gwyneth Paltrow version is cute, but a little too syrupy for my taste (Jeremy Northam does make a dreamy Knightley though). The 2020 Anya Taylor-Joy version gets my vote. It's such a riot and visually creative!

@@kathleensmith3555 Haha! The Kate Beckinsale one is good too! Yeah, Samantha Morton was a great Harriet. Much as I adore Toni Colette, she didn't really fit the part of Harriet. I also think the Beckinsale version handles Frank and Jane better. While you're at it, there's also a BBC miniseries version from 2009 with Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller in the lead roles. It's great too!

Or at least she stood looking over his shoulder while he wrote it! Willoughby in the book actually comes to the Palmers' house while Marianne is sick, and pours out his tortured soul to Elinor. Thankfully, she send him off without seeing Marianne.

He'll always hold Marianne as the ideal woman, and he did genuinely love her, but he won't be miserable or regretful for the rest of his life. He has the money to live as he likes, and that, by his own admission in the book, was always his chief concern. His wife won't always be in a bad mood. He'll get by.
Plus, something the Dashwoods had to admit, Marianne included, that none of this, including his coming to ask if Marianne was ok when she was sick, really makes up for his treatment of young Eliza, running off with her and then abandoning her. He didn't, to his credit, know that she was pregnant when he left her and didn't know how bad things had become for her when he was off enjoying himself with Marianne, but his excuse for that was that he didn't realise that he hadn't left her his address, and added that she could have found that out on her own (which I doubt she could have - a young unmarried girl asking for the address of a man she's not related to?), and to argue that "just because I was a libertine that must make her a saint?" like it absolves him of his responsibility.
And as Elinor pointed out "At present, he regrets what he has done. And why does he regret it? Because he finds it has not answered towards him. It has not made him happy." And Marianne had to admit "My happiness was never his concern".

Willoughby was going to propose to Marianne, but when his aunt said he wouldn't inherit, he knew he wouldn't have any money. So he had to find someone else who did have money. If he could have married for love purely, he'd have married Marianne. But Brandon was a safer option, not just with money, but with fidelity, honesty, stability etc. Not sure Willoughby would have been tbh lol

One of my favorite movies. I love Jane Austen and her characters. My favorite adaptation of hers is the 1995 Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. I think that is an exquisite telling of that story. This is great too. I also love Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma. Another great mivie, not Austen but Shakespeare, is Much Ado about Nothing with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh and Denzel Washington. Great reaction
A gorgeous film, and a fitting tribute to the great Jane Austen. I remember at the time, the director, Ang Lee, asked 'can everyone in England act?' You can argue about the relative ages of the actors, but they played their parts beautifully, and Emma Thompson's script was truly wonderful. And she found her soulmate in Greg Wise.

Fun story. When I was 3 my mom put this movie in to watch by herself. Dad was downstairs watching the football game. I came in her room and she said "mommy is going to watch her movie now sweetie." I said "okay mommy may I stay?" She said "of course." I sat through the whole movie and didn't budge an inch. The only time I made a comment was during the ball scene I said "pretty dresses mommy." She told people I sat through the whole movie. Some didn't believe her but its true. I did. Long movie to sit through for a 3 year old. An intuitive told her I had an affinity with Britain and was deeply connected to the country. My moms dads parents emigrated from England to the USA. They died British subjects. They never became American citizens so my mom is rooted in the culture as well. :)
Jane Austen is truly an amazing author. Her characters really come to life so well! My 2 favorite novels of hers has got to be Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey.
This movie has it all. Heartbreak, sadness, love lost, and love found again. Scandals. You name it. You're gonna need some tissues. You will love this movie! Cast was perfection! Kate Winslet for so young did an amazing job. Everyone was phenomenal!
Alan Rickman did an excpetional job in this movie as Colonel Brandon who was also the Sheriff in Robin Hood 1991, and Snape in Harry Potter. Emma Thompson played Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter as well.

i want to add, my parents used to watch these Jane Austen movies and BBC productions when i was growing up as a little gay boy, and even though i couldn't understand everything going on, i think Colonel Brandon's character really left an impression on me. love might not always be a bright, burning, and dramatic flame, but it doesn't make it any less powerful or beautiful, and sometimes warm stability and a kind, attentive partner who will always stand by your side is exactly what you need, or what you can be for someone else.

Yes, Fanny is a total witch - though we have to admit, her husband didn't need much persuasion to break his deathbed promise to his father. He's a selfish man, though he did mean to give his step-family the money he originally intended to, knowing he could afford it with his money and his wife's money. His wife just gave him a little push and......she's an even more selfish person than he is. They're pretty much perfectly suited to each other.

Willoughby’s income likely comes from his wealthy aunt. By her deciding to leave the estate to another relative, it basically means he will have no income. This is especially important because as a gentleman, he likely doesn’t have a profession and thus must marry a woman with a dowry in order to provide for his own future and that of whoever he marries. Since Marianne has no dowry, he can’t marry her because then neither of them would have even the basic funds for daily life. 29:54

Great movie! Thanks for making me revisit it through your insight. Jane Austen had (most of the time) her works very well represented in cinema. "Sense..." and "Pride..." are my favorites. "Emma" is also very pleasant, I think you will like it too, it is my recommendation.
I have the same reaction everytime I see snape (Allan) in this movie. I was very familiar with this movie before the Harry Potter Movies came out and LOVED snape from this movie. He makes your heart melt. And on that final HP movie when you find out he’s in love with Lilly, his character here always pops into my head.

I would LOVE to see you react to BBCs four part mini series North & South, based on Elizabeth Gaskells 1854 novel. There isn't a single reaction to it on youtube, which is practically criminal. Also the 1995 BBC Pride & Prejudice. The movie is beautiful yes, but it just can't compete with the series for faithfully placing the book on screen.

Yes, Colonel Brandon is the man to measure all other men by. In so many subtle ways he shows how absolutely humble and selfless he is. When his friend asks him about liking Marianne, he says she would never think of him that wsy "All the better for her." The way he steps aside when she falls for Whilloughby. Even when he peeks in after bringing her mom to her, watch the way he starts to bow out of the doorway, fully expecting and content to remain unnoticed and unappreciated, until she calls out his name. Just the epitome of selfless an d humble.
