English "I am singing" was earlier "I am a-singing" (at singing). There is a little-used form in German "I bin am Singen" that is related to this. Dutch has something similar, "Ik bent an het zingen" (I am on/at the singing, sorry not sure of the exact forms). The Danish form with "ved" uses a different preposition, but it is logically the same idea. The English "-ing" form developed from the "an" form of the infinitive (equivlanet to "en" in German and Dutch, and "e" in Danish), and is unrelated to the present participle "-end" in Danish and German. When you look at the history, you find Danish closer to English than you might think.

Hello Mik! First off, big fan here. You're a true teacher, and it shows over and over through your content! I meant to ask you if you'd recommend simple danish audiobooks or other sources to get a big quantity of spoken danish with text, especially for people like me who like to learn with massive listening exposure. Thanks!

Hello Giuseppe. Thanks for your nice words :)
I definitely recommend audiobooks. This is a perfect way of learning lots of words, pronunciation and grammar at the same time. But of course, especially in Danish, you should also include active language production, especially speaking.
Have you already found some good audiobooks?

I actually can't remember anything right now. I need to make a list of those things in the future.
One thing I can think of is material for children. I don't know if this is something you would find interesting, but children's cartoons are great for language learning.
If you're up for it, check out www.dr.dk/drtv/ramasjang
Many things here can be watched with subtitles, so this way you will have the same advantages if an audiobook, but with the added benefit of having an image that helps your brain to understand the words

Firstly, I was thrilled to have found this video series here on UA-cam. So, thank you for these videos! This entry was very helpful with my understanding of the progressive form. Would you be able to explain the use of "i faere med at" in a sentence, or point me to another of your videos that explains this? Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • @MicsLanguages
      @MicsLanguages  Рік тому

Hi Eric. I'm glad the video is helpful to you.
"i færd med" (mind the spelling) is used just like "i gang med", it means the same and is used the same way, BUT it sounds a bit more archaic and wouldn't be used often nowadays.
"færd" comes from "fare" which comes from German "fahren" which means to drive/ to go, whereas
"gang" comes from "gå" (related to English "go") which means to walk. So in both cases the literal meaning is to be in the go/drive/run with doing something.
Hope this answers your question :)

Tak for din kommentar :)
      (at) jeg aldrig har forstået...
      Giver det mening? 🙂

    • @MicsLanguages
      @MicsLanguages  3 роки тому +1

      Hi!
The equivalents to the English continuous tenses would be:
past continuous = datid (past tense), examples:
I was living in Spain at that time. Jeg boede i Spanien på det tidspunkt.
I was watching a movie when I heard the screaming.
I've been living here for three years. Jeg har boet her i tre år. He's been playing video games uninterruptedly for the last 15 hours.
She had been studying to become to become a lawyer for around a year, but one day she suddenly decided that it wasn't for her.

Oi Mitch!
E a boca tá bem aberta.
      E aí, tá conseguindo?? 🙂

      @MicsLanguages  4 роки тому +2

Hej Allison, tak for din kommentar!

A dane wouldn't use 'ved at' in this case. Maybe because 'ved at' + "a more mental activity" tænke/drømme/overveje etc. implies a more 'imminent' meaning, rather than a 'current' one... similar to the english 'I'm starting to'. Present tense would be your best bet here.

Ben, tak for din sætning!

Furthermore, what Mack M. wrote makes sense. I didn't even talk about that in the video, but "ved at" will often have a kind of "future/imminent/about to" meaning. I'm about to think, I'm beginning to think.
In the sentence I used in the video about "They are considering moving to the countryside", the solution with "ved at" actually has a slightly different meaning than the other solutions, in that it implies that They are beginning/about to consider moving...
So yeah, using the present tense here is probably a better solution.

@@benisaacs2615 Haha, godt at høre.

Yeah that's a good one too. The same as i gang med. It sounds a bit old-fashioned or over-correct though. But we still use it.
