  • @technowey
    @technowey 3 роки тому +375

    There's a certain irony on Fool Us that often the very best magicians in the world don't win a trophy.
    Shoot Ogawa does so much more than is shown here, and it all looks amazing and flawless. He is one of my favorite magicians of all time.

    • @horusschnopp1882
      @horusschnopp1882 3 роки тому +20

      This is probably my biggest complaint; Fool Us isn't really about Penn and Teller being fooled, it's about introducing the world to the next generation of great magicians and giving them a chance to be known. It also gives an opportunity for new magic to be innovated. But often the people who get the trophy aren't really either and those who satisfy one or both don't get the trophy.
      They messed up going with the snazzy, snappy "Fool Us" FU gimmick and should've made it the "Amaze Us" trophy.

    • @steelonius
      @steelonius 3 роки тому +4

      @@horusschnopp1882 I partially agree with you. Sometimes the foolers simply managed a gimmicked version of an old illusion, or manage to get Pen & Teller to guess incorrectly at which point the "trick" occurred in an act. However, occasionally some magicians do present things that I think are very original and unconventional. I think that was the original aim of the show. Not to increase the standard by which a trick is performed, but to get magicians to come up with new and interesting ways to carry on magic. This is why, although he is amazing in the true sense of the word, Shoot did not win a Fool Us trophy.

      He did a sleight of hand to create the effect of the coin dropping from the purse. Anyone trained in coin magic would recognize the classic technique, along with all of his other techniques. The real artistry here is that despite all of his moves being well-known, none of them had any tell. I was only able to deduce what he did after seeing the effects and combining that with my prior knowledge in coin magic. I'm sure that's also how Penn and Teller were able to not be fooled.

      With the benefit of frame-by-frame control on UA-cam, I saw how he did a couple of the moves. You can see if you advance frame-by-frame how he "drops" the coin from the top hand to the bottom hand at around 2:54, and if you watch Shoot at around 4:05, you can see where the big coin comes from, but to pull those moves off as seemlessly as he does requires an incredible amount of skill and control. 問題は、彼は人格的にも非常に素晴らしいと

    You can see Teller light up when he sees REALLY good slight of hand.

    My family and I just saw him live in a parlor magic performance in Hawaii. It was a small group of about 12 and it was THE MOST incredible slight of hand performances I have ever seen! Genuinely shocked at the feats he pulled off. Could not be more amazed at his talent, skill, and kindness.

    I love Penn for the honor he bestowed on Mr. Ogawa. It was very touching and I was tearing up. Just beautiful.

    Damn, I can see a tear in Teller's eye, and the extensive blinking to hide it. That's very touching to see, you both being that moved by it. Well done!

    I had the pleasure of seeing Shoot perform close-up down in the basement of the Magic Castle. It was a small gathering of us, an impromptu show he was using as a sort of rehearsal to perfect material for the upcoming FISM competition. I have never seen such gorgeous, flawless sleight-of-hand in person. He has such a warm, humble demeanor too that just takes you in during the performance. This act was beautiful and one of my favorite Fool Us moments.

    I'm not sure if "not fooling them" wasn't the best compliment you could ever get in this case. You made them believe in magic like children, even though they knew how to do it. That is a very high compliment... Bravo!

    The night I auditioned for a magician membership at the Academy of Magical Arts (Magic Castle)…Shoot Agawa was one of the judges. Just imagine the nerves performing in front of such a great sleight of hand magician!!! I did get accepted and to this day I don’t know how…I know if it was Fool Us I didn’t fool anyone. But I will forever remember his presence and the intimidation I felt having to perform in front of Shoot and other industry professionals.

    Just because you know it in theory, doesn't mean you still shouldn't get the trophy - because he did fool you.

      Maybe they should have something like a "Golden Achievement" trophy, separate from the FU trophy.🏆
      Because this guy sure deserves it. I mean, hell, if you can make Teller cry...

    Yeah, i understand that this did not fool them.... just sleight of hand.... but damn that was some stellar sleight of hand. I absolutely love minimalistic magic like this. A few "simple" props and then the real magic begins. A truly stellar performance.
