The worst part about it is that in many ways Riot basically only exists because Blizzard failed to capitalize on all of the innovation that was happening in WC3 custom maps, which was where mobas were developed and honed. If they had foresight they could have captured the market for themselves but instead they locked it down or ignored it and those people went on to make LoL and Dota2 elsewhere (not to mention all the other popular games like tower defense maps). At that point Blizzard had a near monopoly in mmos in WoW, the best rts games in SCBW and WC3TFT, the most innovative incubator in custom maps, the best arpg game (d2lod) and a dominant position in e-sports through SC in Korea, and they have squandered all of it.

Entire game concepts originating from WC3:
MOBA - started as the Defense of the Ancients map
Auto-Battler started with the Pokemon Defense Map
Tower Defense started with Wintermaul then became more popular as Elements TD and Gem TD (both originally WC3 maps)
Survival Mode (Minecraft night time or CoD zombies) probably originate from maps like Kodo Tag (extremely similar and came ~5 years after WC3)
These were the few I can find evidence for and that created entirely new genres, but there are many other maps that still live-on with less notoriety on the app stores. In addition, though it would be near impossible to prove, there were many strategy games (Azeroth Wars, Coming of the Horde, Lordaeron Tactics) and RP/RPG games (Life of a Peasant, DBZ Tribute, Video Game RPG) that pushed the genre in new directions and probably inspired many game designers in that space. Obviously, not every advancement in gaming can be traced back to these custom maps, but the game was so enormously popular and endlessly creative that it certainly influenced a lot of people and ideas during that time.
My point being that WC3 alone is possible the most wasted potential in the entire video game industry. If Blizzard had actually utilized the community they had created, they would probably have a majority share of the entire video game industry.

The DJ Khaled fiasco really is so emblematic of Blizzard's endless ignorance. Riot first collaborated with Imagine Dragons back in 2014 to create Warriors, which was universally beloved. Imagine Dragons were invested in it and gave it their all because they loved LoL, same with Chrissy Costanza of Against the Current who sang Legends Never Die in 2017 and later Phoenix in 2019.
It would've been so, so easy for Blizzard to just copy this. Overwatch was massive and had a huge casual playerbase, I'm willing to bet money that there were several decently popular artists who would've loved to be a part of it, who would've created a banger song dedicated to OWL finals that the crowd and the artist themselves would've been super excited for. People still love Warriors, they still love Legends Never Die. The yearly Worlds song is a proven formula that is right there for any aspiring esport to literally just ctrl + c & ctrl + v and enjoy viewer excitement.
But for god knows what reason they decided to throw DJ Khaled on stage. Poor guy didn't even do anything wrong, he was just completely out of place. It's mindboggling just how detached Blizzard was to make that decision.
Cut to 2021, thanks to maintaining an excellent relationship with Imagine Dragons, Riot gets them to do the opening for their Netflix show and they make yet another banger in Enemy. Arcane is plastered all over their social media and they constantly talk in interviews about how much they love LoL, to the media and their literal millions of fans. Riot even put animated versions of Imagine Dragons *into* Arcane. They happily tied themselves to their brand, similar to Chrissy Costanza who excitedly hosted Arcane pre-launch events.
Riot has this band with millions of followers that is *passionate* about working with them, *passionate* about contributing to League of Legends, and it's obvious to anyone watching.
Blizzard could've had this, no doubt in my mind. There 100% were known artists out there who would've jumped at the opportunity to do for Overwatch what Imagine Dragons did for League. But Blizzard thought they knew better, and the rest is history.

One thing came to my mind: A few year's ago, when I was more active in the Kpop World, BTS's Jungkook used to post a lot of replays of him playing Overwatch. It was clear he loved the game. true, while bands like kda is as popular as it is, then you got pentakill, telle, and their yearly worlds songs. ill always see imagine dragons as leagues OG music partner.
so when i saw imagine dragons make a song for arcane, the show that riot has hyped more than anything they've ever released and announced, i lost my shit. then they officially become part of the league universe lmao, kinda goes to show riot really embraced their musical partnership with imagine dragons.
then you got blizzard, they got dj khaled for overwatch because hes popular, but really theres nothing special about him performing for the overwatch league. there was nothing iconic about his performance, no original song or anything. he was hired out of popularity, and blizzard just didnt seem to consider how fitting he would even be for overwatch, like riot deciding to hire imagine dragons.
blizzard gets nothing out of hiring dj khaled.

Riot also has the money to poach the best artists in the industry. I was in college and one of the alumni worked on alot of the original roster of characters for Overwatch, said it was basically his dream job. Then Riot came in, offered him the chance to make more money as well as be on Project L and he took it. Leaving Blizzard at the time was seen as a huge risk in his eyes but now I think it was one of his biggest blessings in life to be noticed by Riot and picked up by them. This is of course an anecdotal story but it doesn't change the fact that Riot has the resources to get talent that are able to produce games like Legends of Runetera, series like Arcane, and the plethora of other big projects they haven't shown yet.
I grew up during an awkward time where my childhood was defined both by Blizzard IPs and League of Legends, I dropped League cause the game wasn't as fun to me compared to Blizzard games but I always kept up with the new characters and the lore. Honestly. Riot letting their cinematics team lead the project on the show, is absolutely brilliant. I've always said that Blizzards cinematics could be amazing movies. It would be great if Blizzard had made that decision. I've watched some WoW cinematics, and had adrenaline rushes, but with the movie it was just a "this is fun" vibe. Say what you will about Riot as a company (I know I have), but at the very least you can tell that they _give a shit about their product._ There's creative passion there, they can turn one-time collaborators into longtime partners, they pour a ton of money and manhours into _rewarding_ their fanbase. And not just with in-game stuff or Worlds either, but music and lore and books and cinematics and a fucking Netflix show that's almost impossibly good. Of course they care most about money, but they do a hell of a job disguising that fact by bombarding League fans with incredible _stuff._
Blizzard is the exact opposite. In fact, it's almost as if they couldn't help but say "We really don't care about Diablo, WoW, Overwatch, creating things, being transparent, and especially not any of you guys." The two companies are so similar on paper, but damn they're night and day in execution.
I've never touched a Riot game in my life and I used to play Overwatch every single day, and even I think Blizzard needs to completely dissolve at this point. They're a husk.

I agree with you. Let me add onto that by saying that I find Riot Games as a company to be a lot more sneaky in its controversies than Blizzard. When a big ol’ problem for them appears, they wave it away by showing you something new they’ve been cooking up in development and deal with that problem in the background.
Riot in my opinion is a helluva lot more sneaky, which in my mind, a lot more dangerous to work with. At least with Blizzard you can tell that they’re all shameless sex offenders, but with Riot you just don’t know. No one asks questions when your not given a reason to hate them.

There was that, but there were ALOT of "anti-competition" moves WoW did over the years against other MMOs. Basically, when a new MMO or expansion was announced, WoW would then announce content to launch very close to their competitor's launch windows to snag away their competitors momentum. For a recent example, FFXIV announced patch 5.4 to launch on Dec 8th of 2020, a week later WoW Shadowlands Expansion was pushed back to launch on Nov 23rd of 2020 instead of Oct 26th 2020.

Something cool I think Riot does in LoL is the VGU (visual & gameplay update), they basically delete an old champ, build it back up from the ground up and release it again.
From a business standpoint, this is not that clever.
An existing champion has an existing fanbase (even the most forgotten and irrelevant champions have their fans), and reworking them has a real chance to upset these fans.
Also, people already have the champion and the price tag isn't changed by the VGU.
Upon release, a new champion costs 7800 blue essence (the purely in-game currency), before being lowered to 6300 eventually, but the RP (the microtransaction currency) cost is already at the equivalent of 6300 BE. Usually, these champs are deliberately slightly overloaded to make their introduction fun, and so this lures in people to buy them with actual money to get in on the bullshit.
So there's a greatly reduced profit incentive for them to rework champions rather than release new ones, and doing so has a real chance of upsetting the playerbase (Aatrox is a prime example, where they changed this quiet and menacing warmonger with a violent and shouting wackjob. Both are good characters, but the rework is such a departure of what made Aatrox appealing at first that the VGU is generally disliked).
And they do so anyway, and they're usually pretty good at it.
Poppy went from a hilariously broken, ugly mess to an adorable, hammer-swinging powerhouse. She's still a small powerhouse at heart.
Pantheon went from a campy 300 shoutout with "pizza feet" to a glorious demigod with a banger of a theme and a greatly improved....everything. He's still a proud hoplite warrior
Mordekaiser went from this dated game design with some tacked-on metal references to a towering monster. He's still an undead overlord clad in steel.
Fiddlesticks went from a wacky scarecrow to the single most frightening champion in the game, lorewise and gamplaywise. He's solidified as the frightening scarecrow he always should have been.
Warwick went from an imbalanced shitty werewolf to a monstrous steampunk vigilante. He's still a werewolf.
Using new insights into their own game and increased experience, Riot solidified their champions so that the gameplay and lore are fused into one. Warwick's gameplay is designed around chasing down bleeding targets and ferocity. Fiddlesticks is all abount mind games, misdirection and ambushes. They play the way the story says they work. Gameplay and story integration is key here, because it makes it easier to know what to expect from the champ if you don't know the champ.
Also, on yearly basis, Riot purposefully upsets the game balance in their preseason update. They completely upset the balance to keep things interesting whenever the dust of the previous big change settles. The game is perpetually broken, but the game is always changing, and that mitigates complacency.
Some of their decisions are questionable (The mundo rework doesn't seem to know what it wants to be; everything about Seraphine), but overall, at least Riot tries to keep the game fresh, at the risk of alienating their existing fanbase.
They also kept updating the lore, pumping out short stories, cinematics, story events, comics, and eventually Arcane. This despite every player knowing full well that once you accept a match, none of the lore matters.

I honestly hope that Riot gets their corporate counterparts straightened out, learn from it and actually improve, continue to build on their IP and provide resources to their devs generously, in order to be the company that Blizzard should've become, which is the Wests' version of Nintendo. There is no way in hell Riot becomes such a giant had Blizzard not shit the bed on multiple occasions. I've been playing the main game since 2014, and I'm all for Riot expanding into new genres and ports with Project L, TFT, Wild Rift, LOR, Ruined King, heck they even managed to buy out HYTALE for fucks' sake. That's literally setting up years in advance to promote their IP expansion into the Minecraft scene. Even genres unrelated to gaming such as music (K/DA, Pentakill, True Damage, while also partnering with Imagine Dragons, Against the Current, 2WEI and Edda Hayes, and of course (G)I-DLE) and even television (Arcane).
Oh, and not to mention having them hosting the 2nd largest (can make an argument for #1) MOBA Esports scene every year. They're right there with Valve and DOTA2. Anyone who didn't watch Worlds 2021 will be reminded that *JAPAN* of all countries (the JRPG/FIGHTING game Capital of the World, where PC gaming is still considered "niche" compared to console and arcade), had an Esports team reach the bracket stage. A MOBA game, *FOR PC* somehow managed to find a way to be represented on a world stage, by a country that has more crane game machines than PCs in pubs.
This is where Riot takes the cake against Blizzard. They weren't settling for cheap cashgrabs and remakes, they steadily improved the world-building of their IP whilst avoiding the pitfalls of regression and ultimately, reiteration. The devs seek to improve and at least somewhat actually listen to their fans (nobody on the face of the planet wanted Diablo Immortal), and they experiment with their game development, which at times it seems to a fault. But that's okay, it pushes the boundaries even further. One champion release (Aurelion Sol) expanded the entire universe of League of Legends a hundred fold.

As for Runterra, I absolutely love the game.
Imo its the best card game out there right now for a few reasons. The biggest being that there is absolutely zero competitive edge to putting money into the game. As someone who indeed has bought their version of a "Battle pass", the card rewards are sub par but the cosmetic rewards are fucking ballin'. You earn better cards by just playing the game and faster as well.
As opposed to MtG and hearthstone which you either have to spend cash or play the game for 6 months to have a barely competitive deck. And to top it all off, not once will Runeterra slam an in game store pop-up in your face, ever. Never once in my almost a year playing now have I gotten slammed with one. The closest they've gotten was when you open the game up, you get a patch notes of sorts that will include patch notes for items added in the store or other "Riot Games" games. Games which I remind you are ALL free.
Anyone into TTG, I would suggest giving it a good college try, if you don't like it then uninstall and move on. I think you'll like it though

Blizzard on the other hand became greedy. They were arguably more successful than RIOT, but one thing they don't have, or atleast lost was the passion. Games like WC3 was the embodiment of who they were and why they are successful: Despite the graphics, they were able to more than make up for it with their brilliant storytelling, game design and characters that countless of people loves.

Everything in this Marketing Monday was super interesting, but I think the one area where hes off the mark is the Riot MMO finishing off Blizzard. That project won't be done for years, and would really have to be exceptional as an MMO to make an impact on the market. The MMO genre within the last decade has really lost its weight in the gaming sphere, and while there will obviously be interest in Riots, it would take it a substantial amount of time to establish itself as a solid game rather just a fad to play for a few weeks such as Aion, Lost Ark, and many other MMOs that only see excitement when they first release.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XIV is already killing WOW. FFXIV has been in the longest content drought virtually since the games release in 2.0, with the last update being over 7 months ago. And in that time, where there was no new content in the game, there was a mass exodus of WOW players to it, to the point that server stability had to be prioritized due to the stress of it all. Major content creators like Rich Cambell, Asmongold, and countless more brought in thousands of players from WOW and all sung praises on the game. To top it all off, in just two weeks, the games most awaited expansion drops, which will see even larger playerbase growth and generate even more interest.
All the while WOW was releasing updates that just further pushed its players away, offering subpar and rehashed content that many of its dedicated streamers didn't even touch. All of this to say, Riot's MMO won't have a massive impact on the WOW playerbase. The games playerbase is already bleeding out and going to better MMOs, most notably being FFXIV, Guild Wars, and even New World to an extent; and those who will still be playing WOW by the time Riots project is done likely won't be leaving.
Personally, I am not confident that Riot will be able to produce an MMO with any appeal outside of existing IP (though I will be happy to be proven wrong), while there are various MMOs that already exist which pull the rug out from WOW in various ways.

      @NewChiqueChloe 2 роки тому +1

The challenge when it comes to an MMO killing any other is that the momentum required to steal players away from a game they've spent thousands of hours on is immense. On top of that, the sheer volume of content and dev time required to have an MMO capable of doing that is equally as immense. FFXIV is the closest any game has come to killing WoW since its inception, as you mentioned, and it has only been able to just barely start doing that after polishing its systems and adding additional content regularly for half a decade.
Even if the Riot MMO is a masterpiece that blows every MMO players' minds, it won't have the momentum to do serious long-term damage for years after its launch, which itself is a few years out at a bare minimum.

the makers of the show are not really "in house" it's riot, yes, but also a french animation studio named "fortiche" :)

Well they are the animators, which IS a pretty big chunk but the writing is all in house which I say is the core of a show.

Fortiche didnt write it...the story itself was all done in house. Fortiche just brought it to visual life. Granted a big part of what makes Arcane so amazing are its visuals, but that alone wouldnt be enough. The story and characters are even more important, and that was done in-house with Riot

    • @spiritblossomshen2145

True but also at thr same time fortiche has been working with riot for YEARS in their IP. In the end, they chose to work with a team that was already familiar with their world over a big name studio with no familiarity to their stories

You now I'm starting to think the reason why Riot Games focus more on the content creation (which is brilliant) is because they possibly can't just depend on 1 game only ... So they decided to branch out ....which is not only good for them but for the fans or future fans as well

One of the best Marketing Mondays yet! You really condensed a lot of what I was thinking about and stuff I didn't know into a cool comparison. That makes it really clear to see and understand because of the different outcomes

@@moneymonkey5387 They have a lot of tutorials so you can learn each mechanic. I feel like Riots games all have pretty simple basics but there's a lot of depth behind it and it's the same in this game. The effects of the cards are simpler than in most card games but there's still a lot of interesting combinations you can do. Honestly I feel like this might be the Riot game with the most thought behind it.

The biggest gamechanger for me is the awesome player support Riot has. Always helpful and respectful to the player. I feel like Blizzard just wants to milk its players as hard as it gets.

Riot 10 year anniversary video is the moment they killed Blizzard.
Blizzard was already down in a PR nightmare with the free Hong Kong tournament winner getting banned.
And then most of the games announced were direct competitors to Blizzard. Valorant for Overwatch, Legends of Runeterra for Hearthstone and Project F for Diablo. Legends of Runeterra especially announced itself as avoiding recurring problems of its kind of game which couldn't have been more of a list of critics toward Hearthstone.
Then there's the few comments that really targeted Blizzard, like the phone thing with TFT and Wild Rift.
Those were just the announcements but to me that's when the murder got public.
