You just took a walk on the wild side with the Gonkulator, by DOD. Originally introduced in 1996, the Gonkulator combined the DOD Grunge pedal in parallel with a ring modulator to make some truly twisted sounds deserving of its name. Built to the exact specs as the original, the new Gonkulator adds and a new control: Frequency. The first Gonkulator offered the Frequency control as a trimpot, along with a warning to leave it alone. The carrier frequency of the original Gonkulator is 500 hertz, a hair up from B, but now users can fine-tune the carrier frequency to match the key in which they’re playing-or not. Crank the frequency control for some jagged, dissonant riffage or dial it in for some delicate, bell-like harmony. The Gonkulator excels at textures, and can sit anywhere in your signal chain for different sounds at each position. The Gonkulator also never met a dirt pedal it didn’t like-try hitting it with your favorite fuzz or overdrive for some otherworldly tones dying to be let into your next rhythm line. The updated Gonkulator is housed in a sturdy metal chassis with true bypass switching, standard power, and you’ll never lose the battery door again.

HE IS PLAYING THE INTRO OF GLASS. MY LIFE IS NOW COMPLETE.
I can already hear the lyrics come in.... “If I had a dime for every time you walked away......”
@@TheKaiserFritz I could afford to not give a shit……….
Wow. What a trip I listened to this album yesterday and everyone in my life circle heard about it a lot. Love that album, and it is contention for my fav album of all time.
MIKE EINZIGER TONEZ HERE WE COME!!
@2:58 Fuck yeah, "Glass" by Incubus. That song is why I bought one of the original '96 gonkulators in 2004. Then I bought another one because the distortion is so solid, I have since used one as distortion and the other as a ring mod.
3:30 Conversation by Gary Numan. Andy should be nominated THE BEST GUITAR TESTER OF THE WORLD.
Totally agree!
One of the better sounding Ring Modulators....which isnt saying much
😂
fun fact: paranoid solo uses a ring modulator
Source?
I suspect you're right. When I was younger I thought there was a second guitar or something. But now I agree that it's a either a ringmod pedal or just a secondary effect from heavy fuzz.
Sure it's not just an octave effect?
Green Ringer, yeah?
I think it's octave fuzz
I've been listening to ring modulators for years and never knew what it really was...WOW! Songs that quickly come to mind are Jeff Beck's 'Earth (Still Our Only Home)' from the 1977 live album w/the Jan Hammer Group, Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid', Jan's partially overdriven Fender Rhodes solo on Billy Cobham's 'Red Baron' and possibly some P-Funk like Brides Of Funkenstein's 'Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy'...OMG!!!😱
I've heard them used by Bill Frisell, Wayne Krantz, and Adam Benjamin (Kneebody) too... so cool.
Exactly where in Paranoid ?
(no pun intented, simple humble question !)
one side is Tony's distorted guitar while the opposite side has the sound that's obvious through certain notes during the solo
I'll check it !
It's very short, but my favourite bit of ring mod is during the solo in Jeff Beck's Roy's Toy.

I just heard the value of my original Gonk crash!!!
But the addition of a frequency knob is such a great feature that I might pick up one of these new ones (shame the freq doesn't have exp pedal control, one thing at a time I guess)
If a demo can be great then this is real close. THank you thank you!
The gonkulator was from the TV show "Hogan's Heroes"
I need this yesterday.
I have never found a use for ring mod. Cool demo
@2:58 I was just thinking "Oh so that's the effect Mike from Incubus used on Glass" and then he started playing it haha I need this pedal
the band just posted a picture of the mike's pedals, and this one was there, i came to check it out and i notice the incubus song too, haha
my goodness. first the Meatbox makes a comeback and now the Gonkulator? i'm gonna go fucking broke this summer.
+Omar F LOL....... you damn right ! My woman's prolly gonna leave me.
The editing of this video is awsome
That was awesome when you did Conversation by Gary Numan
I think the pedal need an expression pedal input to control the frecuency like the minifooger .
you can buy a Zoom G3 for less the price, its ring mod is really good with expression pedal to control the frequency as well :)
Also some coke and ludes.
@@creamydistortion more like psychedelics but yeah
The part starting at 0:56 sounds AMAZING.
this was the first pedal that I ever tried back in the 90s. I said WTF is this and never bought. have a different appreciation for ring mods now.
This sounds awesome, I've got GAS (gear acquisition syndrome)!
Sounds awesome!!
Andy!
Playing glass by incubus… I’ve waited this day for so long.
DOD made some awesome sounding analog pedals, and the originals can still be found cheaply today. The only downfall they had was a sometimes faulty all flat bypass stomp switch that had the clicker underneath it. On a faulty one, even if you mashed/stomped on it hard, it's hard to turn it on/off. Their dark blue analog chorus (FX63?) is amazing, and can often be found for $30-$40 on the used market. The originals are good for home/studio use but probably not reliable enough for regular live use.
This thing is madness. I want one
AM180, the song by Grandaddy, has THE BEST use of a ring modulator on the intro. It’s beautiful
Huh, always assumed that was a synth.
@@JohnLockeNesss it IS a synthesizer, but the EFFECT on the synth is a ring mod
@@The_Mimewar welp, I shoulda seen that one coming lol.
Glass!!🙌
All Hail Andy!!
Loved that gary numan
the seahawks should have ran the ball
Lol. Took me a minute.
Lol
I needed a laugh, thanks. I did not expect to see this comment.
Bloody hell - Conversation by Numan!!!
2:58 Glass incubus !
2:33-2:36 best tones of the demo
Worst*
You can boogie like a robot from hell with this little box
Whatever he's playing at the start of 2:37 has a very Zeppelin Trampled under Foot vibe to it.
that's because that is what it is.
It's not it. Just a typical rockabilly-esque jam.
@@McDoinky are you that dumb? That's literally trampled underfoot. Name another song that uses that same exact progression/ riff
@@moxieallen5428 teapacks - push the button
@@McDoinky that's a basic gypsy progression and sounds nothing like trampled under foot or anything hes doing in this video lol
The piano duo composition Mantra by stockhausen is majestic
what’s happening at 4:41? Is Andy just changing the frequency knob with his foot?
Gary Numan's CONVERSATION!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE
a little zeppelin on that second example
Nice Gary Numan cover
That Frequency control is a god-send. I've been after a Gonkulator for years or that Incubus "Glass" intro and now I can have that without stupid eBay prices?
badass.
need to get me one of them!
I still have one of those EHX freq analyzers lying around but with some technical issues…my first ring mod guitar impression was by John McLaughlin on Mahavishnu’s Birds of Fire
Coll Hogan got the schematics to the gonkulator from Captain Nemo right under Klinks monacle
how do you tame the constant over tone?
The Grunge pedal side of that in the demo doesn't sound anything like my Grunge pedal...?
It sounds great for a few minutes but would I buy one, probably not as it has limited use.
+KRAZEEIZATION Same here, fun for a few minutes, but then....
I found a Buzzbox in a bargain bin in the mid-late 90s, didn't understand it all since I was just starting playing guitar and sold it like a dumbass. But they just had this as the Stupid Deal of the Day on Musician's Friend for 50 bucks, and I jumped on it. Not exactly the same thing, but pretty happy about picking this up. Let's get weird.
This is Sabbath's Paranoid solo tone!!
INCUBUS. (Seeing them in three days)
How is he doing that pitch shifting at 3:28? Sounded like a whammy.......
Primus?
It looks like he has an expression pedal on the frequency. I don't see an input for one.
I was just thinking the same thing.....wonder if he just had his foot over the on/off switch and the pedal did that up down swell on its own?
He was controlling it with his mind.
Ahhh soon I will finally be able to play Pendulous Threads. I'm sure I will never use it for anything else though...
Glass!
The original Gonkulator did a great Sabbath "Paranoid" solo sound, not sure about this version. I'm surprised Andy didn't spot that.
Yes it will, I've done that on a few ring mod demos actually. Rock on!
INCUBUS. YES. ANDY.
Did they name this pedal after the parody black metal band, or vice versa?
Andy, you should play the solo of Paranoid. I guess that was the first time the RM had been used with guitar.
rydeentokio I feel like he's played that a few times. Maybe the Blackout phaser that can do ring mod settings.
Don't forget Cheap Sunglasses by Zz Top.. There's a short riff thats played at the end of each chorus. Billy Gibbons used a Maestro ring modulator.
Sounds like some early incubus
I think Buckethead may have used this when he was with Praxis when they were recording Metatron.
Gary Numan! RESPECT.
Knew it.. Conversation! I sifted through these comments to see if someone else recognised that. Awesome
"Distortion only" sounded best :)
No
sweet Gary Numan !!!!
And when will this be available for sale?
Gary Ames We are planning on having them in stores the week of Summer NAMM.
how would a big muff sound with this?
I plugged this win with my big muff and then a delay later on. It can sound great if you can dial in the tone and can also make some awesome ambient fuzz that just adds on to what the big muff already does.
thank you! I'm hopefully getting one for Christmas, and now I'm super excited.
I picked mine up over lack Friday, I love it
This is the effect used on the Southpark ending theme right?
Yeah, Primus was big on Ring Modulators ;)
спасибо!
This is how they did the South Park theme
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
0:56 oh hell yeah that first bended not he hits after flickin to his neck pickup!! Pleasently cringin right now. Love ring mods.
Is this the only ringmod pedal?
Chris Rusch there are a few, Moog makes one
I got an original gonk- anyone know when these will go on sale? It's not up on the dod site yet.
Father Rikhi They will be officially announced and available the week of Summer NAMM.
DigiTech HI- thanks, I noticed you also have a version for istomp as well. Any chance of re-releasing the DOD Buzz Box? At least for virtual download?
Probably not, there has been only slight interest in a Buzz Box. That pedal was not very well rec'd the first time around. The high used prices are due mostly to scarcity.
A virtual version would be very rad tho. Maybe it was just before it's time. Appreciate your ressponse.
DigiTech But what is I really, really want it now?
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!
Would you want to throw a dirt pedal before or after this? I've always been used to any distortion pedals being in the beginning of your effects chain. Normal I always ran guitar - wah- dirt - chorus - flanger-phaser-delay. Crazy pedal though lol
+mmaviator22 well chorus before this would certaintly interact with the ring modulator in an awful way, or possibly a really cool way. but a very different way than it is meant to be at the very least. id put it before any drives or modulation, really. Delay before it could sound interesting possibly. Maybe not though.
So any ring mods or pitch type effects would or should normally be placed before drives and chorus pedals or just this type of pedal? Thanks for the tip!
mmaviator22 well the thing with chorus is its modulating the pitch, with something as delicate as a ring modulator it might not sound very musical as it scrambles to attempt to ring modulate the choruses warbling...in another way, distortion pedals enhance harmonics which may make the signal too complex for the ring modulator. But there may be some cool sounds to be had, just might not work as intended in those circumstances.
mmaviator22 however, distortion and chorus afterwards will surely sound great.
mmaviator22 though, i would put octave fuzzes before a ring modulator for sure, as well as pedals like a digitech whammy, or ehx pitchfork, ehx POG, synth pedals, etc, all go before ring mod imo
hi can i get a dalek voice out of this?
my boyfriend WizardsOf12 says yes
but I'm not sure if he's tried it
maybe request it for one of his future videos :)
So that is how Toni Iommi got that sound.
Robert E. Hogan made the first one in 1968!!!
The German Discumbobulator is far superior!!!
SHHHHHHHHHHHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!!
Andy te amo
Andy worked really hard, A for effort. I just do not like ring mods. I liked the part.....sort of, when the ring dial was on zero. Kinda defeats the purpose, huh.
Do you hate pants?
This could have been amazing with an EP input to vary the freq and gain. A ring mod needs to *MODULATE* to be truly effective!
Instead it's just another kinda cool set-and-you're-done-with-it box that you put your guitar through.
2:37 *¿The Sound for "Money for Nothing"* guitar? This Dire Straits song Sound like that
Not exactly. That was a Led Zeppelin song. The Money for nothing sound was done by using a wah pedal kept in the toe position as a sort of filter. There’s videos of mark knopfler talking about it.
Its actually a nice and unique distortion sound - kind of Sabbath meets Psychedelia on really uneasy ground. I didnt think I would like this this much - ring mods are generally too noisy too much for me as a guitar player.
And Devo used a special ring mod geetar too!
I started skipping though because ring mod is not really my taste in tone. Then I got to one part and thought, actually I like this, then noticed that the ring setting was off. I'm still waiting to hear a use that I like. Is it just me?
Dan Higginson Pedals can be used by other instruments including vocals. For the guitar, the ring mod seems to sound best with distortion. I've heard ring modulation with a bass and the player got that No Quarter by Led Zeppelin sound.
thanks Branden! hahaha
Dan Higginson Guthrie Govan's solo on erotic cakes is what made me want one
I agree with braden7180. Ring Modulators are an acquired taste. You'd also need specific purpose for using one. However, ponder this.......... "he who has the most toys, WINS !"
I would listen to Wayne Krantz if I were you. He uses it a lot live and it sounds really good
incubus hell yes
I can hear H.E.L.P.E.R. in the first song.
Who's that by?
With a Ring Modulator who needs drugs?
With Andy demoing such cool gear all the time, who can afford drugs?
@@funkenschuster9102 That's why people sell the drugs.
Incubus tones!
Gahd dayum
It's H.E.L.P.eR.!
Is that what the opening riffis? Who's it by?
GARY NUMAAN
R2-D2
3:46 watching him playing that f chord stretching between 1st and 2nd finger hurt my hands :(
the second finger isn't actually fretting though ;)
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Even Andy can't trick me into thinking a Ring Mod is a useful pedal. Nice try though. I commend the effort.
Sean Beezy it’s the celery of guitar pedals
Daume Bid that’s not a good thing. Celery sucks.
If this were a food, it would be celery.
nah man it'd be fermented shark
