@@kmg1434 pretty sure it's the effect block on AxeFX. I think you'd be hard pressed finding an analog ring mod that has the range of control and modulation you can get from a digital model.
I like Jan Hammer's use of the ring modulator on Mahavishnu Orchestra's first album, The Noonward Race on The Inner Mounting Flame is a good example. John also did some amazing recordings later with a device called a frequency shifter, which is kind of like half a ring modulator.
As an Incubus and The Mars Volta fan Ringmods always interested me. When I got the gonkulator and got tired of playing the Glass riff over and over again, I tried experimented with that and, when you tune it correctly, it becomes a beautiful drone machine!
I’ll admit it - the Max Headroom TV hijacking of 1987 brought me here. It is widely believed that whoever did it used a ring mod to distort their voice, and I was curious to learn more about them and what they can do.
The key to a ring modulator, that almost no one is aware of, it to have a foot pedal control over the carrier frequency, it is like WHA WHA, no foot pedal means your missing the point. This is foot pedal controled ring modulation on the Harmony Array Mbira ua-cam.com/video/XYRsZzIjUbY/v-deo.html
Ring mods are crazy musical in the right hands. Jeff Parker, a fave of mine, uses that Moog for all the trem sounds you hear in his work; always with an expression pedal and to me it's pure magic, somewhat reminiscent of how an organ player uses a leslie, but not exactly. You didn't touch on the square wave of the Randy (my fave rm so far) - it's like a super choppy trem and can get "poppy", but that with an expression can get you into the ring mod zone or back into trem. With slid you can get cool synthy sweeps, like the mod wheel on a moog.
Watched the whole video and I'm still asking myself, what are they good for? You demonstrated what they sound like, but maybe show some examples of how to use them in a real-life musical context? For example in a band, in the studio, live, genres etc..
Cool as it would be to get a camera crew and book out a venue, a studio, and a backing band to play with in all of those contexts, such things were just a *smidge* outside of our budget for this one
It just takes a bit of imagination to make music with the obnoxious sound of a ring modulator pedal. Look up Wayne Krantz at the Iridium, his ring mod scat solo.
Me neither. I can think of so many effects that I like better than this one. Like... ALL OF THEM! The next Moog device that I am buying is their THEREMIN!🙂
What's your favorite (or least favorite) song featuring a ring mod?
Paranoid, ofc.
Prosthetics, from slipknot
South Park theme (first seasons)
Highway Star DP.
Anything by Wayne Krantz
Greg Kubacki of car bomb makes the best use of ring mod on guitar I've ever heard.
Ohhhh! Car Bomb rips. What tracks is Greg using Ring Mod on? I gotta check that out.

WOW seeing car bomb in the wild on youtube is always a great feeling! still waiting for another album
Any idea what model they use?

Especially if you stack it with gain or a lot of reverb and delay
My favorite use of a ring modulator is the Doctor Who Dalek voices ... EXTERMINATE!

Very informative. Still don’t see myself ever using one but the mystery on what the hell they are supposed to do is solved lol
Listen to aphex twin
B Movie Sci-fi score?! Count me in

The LFO sounds great on the MOOG when slow.
The intro to Roulette Dares by The Mars Volta uses the moog with the sweep.

Love a ring mod
my favorite use is to blend in and push other effects with it, mostly in parallel chains.
They also make for an awesome tremolo
7.07 very very useful information. RM Tremolo is a result of the pitch being brought under the range of human hearing.

Ring mods are musical to robots, lol... Jk, I use my ring mod to turn my guitar into bass
I never really use ring mod on its own but I love using it with a fuzz pedal.
ZZ Top Cheap Sunglasses? Maybe a Devo song? Is it necessary?
After ALL of that... the answer to your question is: "nothing".
Agreed. Lol
Yes. If I want to waste my money & hear a bad sound, I'll put my money in the toilet and flush it.😆
check pladask feber demo.
My favorite guitarists for ring mod are *Wayne Krantz, Terje Rypdal* and *Jeff Beck.*
One cool setting you guys missed on the Moog is the "bells"!
Malekko Goatkeeper is a killer offering for those who do not want to spend MF-102 money. I know because I own both.
Answer "We don't know but we'll pretend we're doing something."
Fair enough, haha
Love the Way Huge Ring Worm
Haha, Andy has barely ever said clean tone, except as a joke.
I think I'll never use ring mod, but I enjoy hearing others mess with it. Fun!
No. Thanks!🙂
Still don’t like em’….

Ring modulation what is it good for? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING🔥
