Lovers of pure, unadulterated guitar tones look away now, because in this episode, Daniel and Mick offer a primer on the world of guitar sounds that, er, aren't guitar sounds.
Obviously it's a massive topic and before anyone asks, this is NOT about guitar synths. We might do that in the future. Say, 2025 or thereabouts.
Instead, we're talking about more simple pedals, to whit this is a light overview of…
• Ring modulation with the 2015 reissue Dod Gonkulator
• Subsynth with the Digitech Synth Wah
• Polyphonic octave generation with the Electro-Harmonix POG2 and...
• …as an extension of that, the Electro-Harmonix B9 and C9 Organ Machines
Somewhere among all the bonkers conkers there might be a sound or two you could use. Er, maybe?
Dan is playing his Nik Huber Krautster II, Mick is playing a Collings SoCo, although frankly the guitars might just be slightly overkill for these sounds. You think?
Amps are a Marshall JTM45 (reboxed) into a Marshall 1961cx 2x12 with Celestion G12H Anniversary speakers, and a Two-Rock Studio Pro 35 into a custom Zilla 1x12 with Celestion G12H Creamback speaker.
As always, effects and amp switching and routing is handled effortlessly by TheGigRig G2.
Enjoy this if you dare...

"You can't play wrong notes, cuz every note is wrong" great line!!
Love my B9 - everyone's face when the organ kicks in on Gimmie Some Lovin and Born To Be wild is always a laugh!
+Salisbury Simon I honestly want one just for that reason.
Well worth it - depending on the level of alcohol - it can get really quite comical!
You make a strong case, sir. I want one.
Is b9 or c9 better?
@@paulsmart5199 run them concurrently for the best sound
I've only recently found this channel and it's already my favourite guitar show. Dan is full of knowledge and enthusiasm and Mick asks all the right questions. Both of you play brilliantly. Thank you.
Because of this I went hunting for the Synth Wah, they don't make it anymore but thanks to eBay I have a sound I've been hunting for for ages! thanks!
SO glad you guys decided to do this! been watching for the longest and have been waiting for something like this!
Tom Sawyer at 8:43 made me smile so much!
If these guys did a show with cap and Chappers would be pretty much Top Gear for guitar!
The DOD Gonkulator = the sound in your head if you were being run over by an ice cream truck while tripping on LSD.
That's being charitable.
Perfect for a Hawkwind tribute band.
It sounds like you had such an experience.
I think THESE GUYS were tripping when they made the video.
Love that you guys get into the odder stuff!
Happy B9 owner and I will tell you exactly why I wanted one. I don't play keys and assume I will never learn at this point. Instead of getting a keyboard I can't play, why not get something that allows me to translate my guitar skills to keyboard sounds? Makes total sense to me.
thanks for the vids y'all! keep livin the dream!
Yes! I love the weird sounding pedals. a million overdrive pedals and vintage everything gets boring fast. Keep doing shows like this there are so many more out there.
Fantastic B & C9 use with the POG2 !! Great video, Thanks !!
Hi gentlemen, thanks for the inspiration. You made me ebay the Synth Wah and this is so much fun. I love that sick sound. I combined it with overdrive and harmonics (Whammy) - the result is just big fun! Lots of thanks.
Please don't ever stop making vids!!! You guys make me laugh with how much fun you have together!
Can I please buy both of those t-shirts?! Cheers!!!
Yes! I want one of those Pedal Show t-shirts too.
I try to listen to this show through my studio monitors at my editing computer - and boy howdy, did today's show have a massive dynamic range! Plus you two had me laughing until I was choking for air! Dinky di bonza!
I bought that Gonkulator because I love to experiment with sound. Once I heard that distortion, I was so hooked. It's a really awesome circuit.
Using the Digitech Synth Wah with a chorus sounds amazing too!
Loved this episode! Pedals like these perpetually interest me and are what really got me addicted to stomp boxes. You should've added some of the really out there pedals like the FM4, DBA Robot, and the Dwarfcraft Pitch Grinder. Maybe for another similar episode :)
Got my C9 today and I'm soooooooo stoked with it.
World in action!
I love my c9 use it quite a lot in ska and reggae songs also works well mixed with overdrive. The shimmer setting is excellent also with delay.
Thanks for the demo.
This has made me really want a Synth Wah
Great show as usual, Dan and Mick! FYI, The Mel9 is awesome. I use it on my acoustic board and it adds tremendous drama when used tastefully!
I really enjoy my ehx ring thing for its ring mod (not to mention chorus, trem, and vibrato, too). You can retune the ring frequency to any note you're playing on the fly, just hold down the left footswitch for one second.
Show us your ring modulator!! You're having so much fun as usual!! :-) If you ever do another one of these oddball ones I would love to see the Pigtronix Mothership and the Boss SY-300..
Add it to the long list...haha :-)
B9, C9, and the other, key9 and Mel9 are Amazing...
damm - once again,,, how did i miss all these great 2015 vids.... so vintage TPS !!!!!!
Yay upload time. Good fun. Dan/ Mick, how about a video comparing your JTM45 to a clean low wattage fender type amp with various plexi based pedals e.g Dirty little secret, SL drive. The Plexi is out of reach and just to loud for the average gigger. Thanks for the uploads guys.
Some sounds remind me David Allen great period, Gong, Here and Now. Amazing
John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck both used ring modulators. McLaughlin had some prototypes (later employing a Sony m7 for the job). Jan Hammer gave his Maestro Ring mod to Jeff Beck (he still uses it). Personally, I really like the Way Huge Ring Worm. The alesis quardraverb used to do a nice job (although noisy).
Philip Schofield more like!! Entertaining as ever guys. Perhaps you should actually have a show called TPS Friday.
LOL, you guys are awesome, you look like your having so much fun.
I looooooove the synth wah! Love it! Just missed a jack for expression pedal, which would be awesome in that pedal, expanding it's versatility.
Man, that nice harmony on 18:30 followed by that little pause on 19:05 !!! I lol'd hard!
loved the Bouree with the organ sound... :)
Love the shout out to the Daleks. Dan and Mick, who was your favourite doctor?
I got the C9 pedal nearly a week ago and it's great fun. I find it really useful with my looper and layer single notes to create a rhythm. As you said in the video at loud volumes it can be problematic as with the click effect on some organ sounds makes horrible popping noises and must be turned off/down. Also I found C9 works best with low output single coil pickups as it does seem to be sensitive to how I attack the strings. So be very careful with not to use active pickups through these pedals.
Now I'm experimenting with putting it through different effects like fuzz pedal for the 'Lord Purple' is awesome and adding more modulation and delay gets interesting.
But best of all it is so easy to use.
Doc Tiberius ...put a compressor pedal before the c9, sounds much better.👍
I use a B9 and mellotron 9 in my band.Fabolous sounds.
Whoa, 'Purple' from C9 is a mighty sounding thing!
Near enough pissed myself at 19:05
'The stare' into Daniels cracking up.
There was a lot of cheeky laughs in this episode but that one takes the cake for me.
Gonkulate! Your are move you make, always thinking of the future
That Digitech Synth Wah, Kills 'em all!
Thanks guys. When Dan mentioned that the POG2 could store presets I suddenly sat up and took notice... preset functionality makes the POG2 a more interesting prospect for a pedalboard.
waited all day!!!!!!)))))))
Dan, you're full of surprises. Your Bach wasn't half bad!
If we could just have a cut of all of your facial expressions...
I remember seeing Mike Einziger from Incubus use the Gonkulator in fun ways on a few of their songs. Check out: 'Smile Lines' and 'Pendulous Threads'.
Thanks again for another stellar episode!
Glass
Pun intended ;)
The B9 and C9 are served really well with a compressor in the chain. They're dynamic pedals so they're touch sensitive and yeah, those swells and frequencies can get out of hand without something to tame them. They're great for recording, I have the C9, and it's a lot cheaper and easier than getting a real organ. I don't think I'd ever use it live, but for buskers on the street it's a good addition.
do you record direct or through the amp and cab?
I record via a mic'd cabinet, not direct.
The c series needs a lot tweaking. I use drive, pog and compression going into a Boss Rt-20 rotary Leslie. Amazing! Love your show. THANKS
I use my C9 as a song writing and arranging tool. I can't play piano/keys, so it's a great help coming up with parts and communicating them to the keyboard player.
Love the shirt!
A little Bouree in Em if you please.. haha this may be the funnest episode yet. All great pedals. Gonk! Love it. The Synth Wah I use in a stereo rig. (When i use it.) Run the dry thru to a normal pedalboard to one amp and the SynthWah thru a separate board to another amp and kick it in when you want to get those Rush type parts. So much fun here, I could go on and on. Thanks as always. Oh and I dont mean to be a twatty bastard but DOD is pronounced as individual letters, not as a word. D.O.D. Everyone in England pronounces it that, Ive noticed.
The only pedal missing from this line up is the electro harmonix key9 which is similar to the B9 and the C9 but diffrent in its own respective right. Other then that, fun pedals all around.
Happy Friday!
Love the Organ pedals .....can't get a Hammond B3 in my rv .....
16:25 good lord that sounds incredible
Having had a B9 I now find the Boss MO-2 to be a much more usable and flexible pedal for live use.
Oh my god Daniel! That's some sick Genesis you're playing there at 8:40
Fancy FA hah
If that's not Genesis, then what is it? I've definetly heard it before.
I had diarrhea by the end of this video. Thanks
I run a EHX Pitch Fork into my Blues Jr. I don't use it very much and never beyond one octave down, but the thing can do up to 3 octaves up or down! Can I cause actual damage to the speaker? Great episode as always!
I so wanted to hear some Deep Purple soloing through one of those into a cranked marshall or overdrive!
I actually just sold my Pog2 because though i enjoy the sounds i only used it for maybe one song out of my whole catalog. Plus the size hindered me to grow and arrange my board if i needed to. I ended up getting the Mooer Pure Octave which has the same tones just a lot smaller.
You might like to revisit this and freature the Pigtronix Ringmaster, which has resolved the polyphonic (tune-able) ring modulator ... among other things. it's a tremolo, too.
Oh yeah, the DOD gonkulator! I´ve got the original version from the 90´s.
Incubus used it on some tracks. For a nice 70´s example of ring modulator on guitar, check out Mahavishnu Orchestra´s album "visions of the emerald beyond". John mcLaughlin uses it on the track "on the way home to earth".
i would really like to hear your take on the whammy and the pitchfork octave effects vs other octave pedals and debate the sound quality of octave pedals vs getting a pitch shifter pedal which does octave effects and more... which is more worth it?
The B9 or C9 with a wet dry wet rig could give the effect of a seperate guitar and organ. You could even throw in a leslie sim pedal too, a univibe might even work.
You guys are killing me, the Digitech Synth Wah has been my secret weapon for years! Sooo many cool over-the-top sounds. You should also try running a fuzz after it for some truly gnarly results. Well done gentlemen, one of my favorite episodes thus far.
those ehx pedals are my favorite thing in the world
7:51 The best happily disgustedly surprised face I've ever seen. And 9:43 - 9:46 should be made into a gif
A Ring Modulator is used for a brief moment a couple times in Cheap Sunglasses.
What brand and model is that red guitar? Great video!
That ring modulator reminds me of Jeff Beck "stratus".
Jack White uses a pot a lot. Octaves below with a fuzz
Hey, guys! Would you be willing to try out a bunch of octave pedals? I've been fascinated by SubnUp and the Vivider. I'd love to hear your thoughts on them.
Yeah! It's friday! :-)
Ring modulation is basically tremolo, amplitude modulation, at very fast speeds. This generates an output that has the sum and difference frequencies of the carrier and modulator. The carrier is what you play, the modulator, obviously, is the signal modulating it. If the modulator is slow enough you just get tremolo.
The Electro Harmonix Ring thing is one of the best on the market.
And all I ever play on the synth wah is Roobarb and Custard :)
My favourite is the MF-102 by Moog. Tried a few ring mods out in a shop and loved it! Listen to Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's work in the Mars Volta if you like those weird noises!
the Moog is great
I got the C9 just a year ago and it was great fun. at first then the novelty wears off.
I used about a handful of times. Warning* Mick you're right about being careful with sudden volume levels shootingthrough the roof, so it gets hard to distinguish between keyboard clicking and speaker ripping. hahaha! (sorry).
I got me an external cabinet with a 300watt 10" Dominator bass speaker in it for the C9 as not to damage to vintage speaker.
lastly you do have to play differently and best to play double stop cords or individual notes and never do bends because it just sounds terrible.
That Nik Huber is beautiful!
+Ben Lubin astonishing guitar
I'm guessing an eBow would be fun with that POG
Just bought a used synth wah for $20. So jazzed!
Would the EHX Hog2 do the majority of what the C9 B9 Mel9 Key9 and synth9 do?
Gotta love pedals where you have to ask: Is it broken or is it supposed to do that?
+Daniel Paetkau absolutely :)
I love watching Dan crack up! XD
These are two very pretty guitars.
What Fuzz did you use with the POG?
the only one I see is the gonkulator it's a tremendous distortion
+KCruB3ast1 ty
6:57 is my new ringtone.
Gutted all these organ sounds and no spence Davis riffs??? Haha love this show however my bank balance does take a big hit every time I watch a new show! One question why didn't you turn them all on??? Haha great show can't wait for the next one!
What patch cables are you guys using? They look sleek and small,… would be perfect for my pedalboard.
They might be lava cable? Maybe George L's?
ohhhh, the Rush references.. :) :)
I fell in love with the digitech synth wah after this video and bought one. It's super fun but has a huge volume drop when kicked on. Anyone else experience this?
Replying way too late, but I run mine through a BOSS LS-2 to both control the wacky volume and preserve a dry signal. Works wonders. Also it technically let's you do 1 dry and two wet signals, so I run the other wet through a pitchfork. (I play bass)
Please do some "sound like artist xyz" videos. Would be very interesting to see how the edge gets this amazing drive sound with a vox ac30 for example.
Tube screamer and a lot of volume.
That Bach piece sounded like magic roundabout haha
The best use I've heard of these is In repair by John Mayer
Vintage that pedal show
If you're testing synth like pedals, guys, then please: the new Boss SY 300!!
It's very expensive though. Would be my dream to own one!
+hoshino Say you're in a band and you need some synthesised sounds but no one has access to thousands of pounds worth of synths... A little synth pedal and you're away!
+hoshino Yes I do think costs vary. Another thing to consider for me is the playability of instrument. I can make a synth hooked guitar sound amazing but I'm crap at piano so I'd make a synth sound dreadful! I understand you point and I think I'd also rather buy a Moog Sub 37 or something rather than the Boss pedal, but I still think the pedals have their uses.
+hoshino I've got experience with both, moogs and guit synths. It's not the same in playing. If I'm talking about guit synths, I mean GR 300, 700 and now SY 300. All the MIDI stuff inbetween seems a little bit plastic boring for me. But the new 300 is an inspiring tool. So it's up to you, if it's fucking stupid to buy one …
+hoshino Without the knowledge of the old stuff like GR 100, 300, 700 and the newer stuff like GR 1, 33, 50 and so on, witch are working with pitch to Midi for triggering pcm sampling sounds, it seems a little bit hopeless … The SY 300 is in the category of the GR 100/300 and doesn't sound like "plastic sounding samples". It's analog and it works like the old units, without Midi triggering. That's great and everything you play, you can hear, even diffrent Pickup combinations or it works also with accoustic guitars. That's a different dimenson. With the Moog, you recommended, you have to play on keys, and that's the point, where's the difference.
Does the dry signal remain analog going through the pog?
what is the tune around 8:44 ? it's strangely familiar, but I can't put a finger on it.
someone kind to tell me what it is? :)
Hi, my name is João Paulo. I am brazilian. I have seen yours and about this video I have a opinion. POG2 is more flexible than othes and the POG 2 organ's tone can be better because of the frequence's manipulation. I have one and I noticed it. Congratulations for your canal. Thanks a lot. Bye.
Does a 12 string simulator need to go first in the signal chain?
I get anxiety attacks watching these guys. Too much info!!! 😂
You guys should do a few episodes about bass pedals. (not distortion pedals)
