    Question: Why is it that Starfleet officers have to call to their ship when they want to be transported back, but every other species in the galaxy has a magical, innate knowledge of when their away teams want to be transported?

    • @cyrusol
      @cyrusol 3 роки тому +6

      In Discovery's 31st/32nd century Starfleet officers usually have personal transport devices that allow them to be transported whenever they want, wherever they want. Why they still choose to _walk_ on starships is beyond me but other races may simply have a more advanced tech in those respects.

    • @Kishandreth
      @Kishandreth 3 роки тому +9

      First off, starfleet can transport anyone they're tracking. They have done it.
      There are reasons they don't.
      1)The person on the ground has better knowledge of what's going on. Would be quite silly to transport someone after they ran off a cliff only to have them appear with a parachute that falls limply to the ground.
      2)Allows the Federation to hold individuals accountable. Starfleet assisting officers on skipping out on their bar tab would be a bad look. If the person requests a transport they can be punished and forced to pay, while Starfleet only needs to apologize for the inconvenience and blame the person.
      3)Ships lock onto comms quicker and better then an individual. Once comms are established the ship knows where the person is.
      4)it's just rude to transport someone without warning. Too many possible embarrassing scenarios could happen.
      5)there are means of discreetly asking for transport. They could establish one person on the away team as the emergency button, if that person hits their comms the team is immediately transported. They could have the comms open and a codeword for transport. The mission could require immediate extraction if another person is within 20 meters.
      For all we know the other races use an implant chip so they can semi telepathically communicate for extraction. This could be as simple as a person thinking of the word "alarm"

    • @NACLGames
      @NACLGames 3 роки тому +3

      I think it's really as simple as them having an implant or some other signaling device that doesn't require an overt action. Starfleet uses communicators and verbal command for a variety of reasons which explains why they're different.
      The communicator is at once a communications device, a universal translator, a tracking device and an insignia. If you want to go further, it's also an easily accessible source of monofilament when disassembled, which can be used to help repair other equipment in survival situations. Similarly it can be easily removed to interface with a power source to transmit a stronger distress signal, or used as a tracker to scan and lock on to other objects or people. Starfleet clearly sees a lot of uses for an easily accessible, removable universal device like the communicator.
      As for verbal command, it seems to be a fairly universal method of control and interfacing favored by the Federation in general. With a multitude of species that make up the Federation (B-canon include many non-humanoid lifeforms, even Horta who are basically living rocks), not all of which is depicted on screen for budget and practicality reasons, voice communication is quite easily applicable to all such species. Other civilizations are more homogenous, so a more discrete solution that works for one species is fine (implants, strap-on touch based interfaces, etc). Voice command doesn't require physical access, and species that do not use voice communication can have custom solutions developed for them to allow them to communicate verbally to other species (that much is still necessary anyway to live among other beings), which would also make them in turn compatible with voice command based controls. And clearly the Federation has developed a highly advanced natural language interface compared to other civilizations, even Klingons or Romulans (in other words, their computers can understand and interpret non-standard commands, and anticipate intent from users) in order to facilitate voice control as much as possible.
      That propensity for verbal command then creates both a cultural and operational focus on the use of voice confirmation for everything, including instructions to each other instead of just to equipment and to computers.

    "Imprisonment is an injury, regardless of how you justify it"
    Yet, it's worth noting that the Enterprise has, does and will imprison others, and has the facilities to do so as amply demonstrated, but would not wantonly imprison a group from another race for the sake of self-gratification or even knowledge, despite themselves being explorers and scientists. So, regardless of the statement, the Enterprise does justify imprisonment with due purpose, and simply recognizes that it is an injury to another being to be imprisoned.

    • @DissectingThoughts
      @DissectingThoughts 4 роки тому +2

      Sure. Recognizing that something is injurious and making an informed decision to do it anyway, and simply not unintentionally injuring people because you don't consider it as such are two different things. Picard knew they were just ignorant, hence him letting them off with a lesson and a warning instead of doing something more drastic. Picard is practical. His point wasn't that you shouldn't ever injure people, just that you should at least know that's what you're doing and understand the consequences of your actions.

    • @themaverick6269
      @themaverick6269 3 роки тому +1

      That is true, however in acknowledging it as an injury he does not state that he is unjustified.
      There is such a thing as justified injury and it is usually in response to unprovoked injury upon one's self. In this case Picard was justified specifically because he was responding to an injury done to himself and his crew. In fact he would have been justified in being harsher than he was but he is a better man then most and as such could see the extreme levels of discomfort these beings were exibiting. As such he let them off easy, understanding that they may be even more averse to it than humans and Klingons.
