      Say what you will about the first two seasons of TNG, there truly were some wonderful moments. I love this scene. It's a great example of how people should conduct themselves in the workforce, especially leaders. You really see the compassion, respect, and loyalty the captains have for those under their command. And the awesome thing is, Picard never raises his voice or swears while defending Riker! The older I get, the more I've come to appreciate Star Trek.

    Yes, Riker had a joviality about him. This didn't mean he was unfit for command. He used this joviality to make a pleasant work environment for his people, knowing that a pleasant work environment boosts productivity and engenders loyalty. That's what Mr. Kolrami missed. He thought Riker didn't take his duties and responsibilities seriously and nothing could be further from the truth. It's called "command style". Every leader has a style. None (of the ones that work) are better or worse than the others, They are simply the way that the leader has found best to lead.

    This is exactly the divisive factor that drives a wedge between Jellico and Riker.

    • @wjzav1971
      @wjzav1971 3 роки тому +5

      Not exactly. The conflict between Jellico and Riker was that Riker was making his own calls, trying to work something out with his superiors and subordinates. Which is fine with a Captain like Picard who is willing to listen and spend time working with his crew and who generally trusts Riker to make the right calls.
      But Jellico is the kind of man who wants things done when he orders them and be informed about things happening with the ship. And when Riker makes decisions without telling him, doesn't fullfill Jellico's direct orders and keeps challenging his decisions (even when it is done in privat), then Jellico has a second in Command whom he cannot trust.
      Riker being jovial with the crew was not the issue.

    • @Kelorel
      @Kelorel Рік тому +1

      @@wjzav1971 The problem is also a bit more nuanced than that. Jellico took command of the Enterprise while Picard was leading a team on a risky mission in Cardassian space. Relations between the Federation and Cardassia were very tense and it was clear war could break out at any time. Jellico had to make sure the Enterprise was ready for war.
      Enterprise was still setup to run as an exploratory vessel, which would need significant changes to keep up with wartime demands. Jellico had a lot to change, and not a lot of time to do it in. Simply put, Jellico didn't have the time to do things in a manner that would be easy for the crew; he had to step on everyone's toes to make sure the Enterprise was ready for a war scenario as soon as possible. Jellico knew everyone would hate him but he had to be okay with that because if it did come to war, at least the ship would already be capable of handling the change in pace.

    • @wjzav1971
      @wjzav1971 Рік тому

      Honestly, Starfleet was pretty dumb to change command of their flag ship right before a crisis. Riker would have made a good captain, but the show kept having to come up with silly reasons for him to turn down offers to command his own ship.
    *Edit:* Case in point, I watched the season two episode "The Icarus Factor" last night which is the first episode in which Riker is offered his own command, and at one point he admitted he would be a fool to pass up the opportunity. Even Picard seemed to agree, telling Riker that despite the prestige that came with being second in command of Starfleet's flagship, he was still only second in command, and that there was no substitute for being in the captain's chair. In the end, Riker turned down the offer for no well defined reason, just said something vague about personal growth.

      @SLOWPOKE RODRIGUEZ No, I didn't miss the point I understand the prestige of wanting to command the Federation's flagship, but Picard was not in any hurry to retire, meaning that Riker would have whiled away his prime years without ever commanding his own ship.
      And even if Riker had transferred to another ship to serve as captain, he would have been first in line to get the Enterprise when Picard finally decided it was time to hang it up.
      So, yes, the show did diminish Riker slightly every time the writers contrived a reason for him to refuse his own command.

    "Circumstantially-inappropriate joviality." In other words, this puffed-up gasbag is saying "Riker is too happy."
    Which, having learned a bit more about the show's history, also must be a subtle jab at the writers of the first season, who said that Riker shouldn't smile too much, and should always have a "glint in his eye" reminiscent of some actor whose name I can't remember.
    They learned their lesson in season two when viewers said the character was too "dry." That's when they allowed a bit more of "Frakes" into the Riker character.

      @@Summersong2262 You are exhibiting exactly the tribalist folly you project outwards, your chosen blindness to what ails humankind. (And very predictable reaction.) The fighting against spiritual aspects is an expression of the growing imbalance. People still chauvinistically promote escalations of the very problem as a solution. (Thus the self-defeating fanaticism that can, just to name one example, be seen so overtly in the US Democrat political course that leads to one awfully shockingly crappy candidate after another, lowering the bar continuously, and then making a big drama of refusal of responsibility when the other tribe's champion wins again.)
      *There is no smart without heart.* Sad that you didn't see that blatantly obvious message in the video, episode, or Trek in general. It is in fact a constant theme in popculture. But the mass mediocrity just cherrpick and discard, instead of looking at the whole picture, opening to what might be there instead of merely affirming existing ideas.
      But so is humankind's tragic peril; like plenty of Trek superfans who idolize Spock as a calculator mind, totally missing the crucial plot point of him being half-human, which also explores the value of that duality, the mix, the balance.
      I have personally experienced a growing very unpleasant emo-tribalism from the atheist-technocratic-intellectualist portions of society, which is growing uncontrolled due to those people's willful blindness and projection, always looking down on the 'other tribe', the 'less intelligent' people, strawmanning and cherrypicking for desperately needed self-validation.
      It is very poignant that certain 'cult leaders' have been nicknamed the Four Horsemen of Atheism. - There is an ideological crusade going on.

      Thats not true. If I recall correctly, it was Picard who said something like "They are trying to decide if a twenty years bird of prey is match for the enterprise". Second, who was the idiot who organized a war game in a non secured sector of the federation ? These kind of tests should be made in a backwater sector. So, in principle, no ferenghi, klingons, romulans, cardassians, borg, etc.

    • @LordZontar
      @LordZontar 4 роки тому

      @@othaner38 The truly stupid part of the whole wargammes exercise was the needlessly complicated procedure of disabling the phasers to connect the beam arrays instead to some kind of low power sighting laser pulse projection, requiring a switchover from the one system to the other. Why not simply fire the phasers at 1% power against deflector shields, as demonstrated in the surprise mock attack to test the M-5 in "The Ultimate Computer"? Picard would have had his phasers fully available to him when the Kreecta attacked. Of course, nothing excuses Picard being so careless as to not have his deflector shields up and dismissing the appearance of the Ferengi raider as a false sensor ghost. In Picard's defence, Riker had (earlier in the wargame) used a false sensor ghost to surprise attack the Enterprise. So it wasn't totally unreasonable for Picard, when he saw the Ferengi raider, to think Riker was trying the sensor-ghost trick again.

He's not comparing him only to Jack Crusher, but to every single officer he served with from the time he was an ensign (perhaps even a cadet) to his captaincy of the Stargazer and the Enterprise. edward heaney Dude, Star Trek takes place in a utopian socialist future. For the most part, Star Trek seems to dislike religion because of all the war it causes. They are very open to new peoples and immigration, and the list can go on. Hell, TOS was made as a political message to America. Back then, it was huge to have a black person, a Russian, and an Asian serving on the bridge of a battle ship.

    Lol, then of course Riker goes on to order a collision course with the Borg. He gets fired by Jellico. He loses the ship completely at Veridian III. He ejects the warp core in the Briar Patch. Yeah...Riker's got panache but he's not really a great captain. Maybe Kolrami had a point.

    • @quoniam426
      @quoniam426 4 роки тому +2

      In the Briar patch, he lacked options he was used to, warp capability and enemies had subspace weapons. Against the Borg, he had to be creative since they had assimilated all the previous weapon signatures and Starfleet tactics. As for the Veridian III, the Klingons highjacking La Forge's visor gave them the shield frequency.
      And Jellico, despite being a guy knowing how to fight against Cardassians was a piss poor commander in terms of loyalty inspiration, althought circumstances didn't help him to establish any. There, Riker made a clear judgement due to habit mistake. He just didn't like Jellico(s style and had a temper tantrum about it, he has flaws, his ego being one of them.
