What a fascinating episode. Thank you for the facts and analysis. As a truck driver I've been over the Key bridge many times. Motorists don't realize that as truck drivers sit up higher we also see over the edges and into the abysses below. The Key bridge is one of most formidable I've ever crossed, and one of the most awe-inspiring. Also impressive is the massiveness of a container ship. I heard you say the ship was rated 95,000 tons. By comparison, a regular semi truck maxes out at 40 tons. The bridge was hit with the force of 2,375 semis. It didn't stand a chance. So deeply saddened for the lives lost.
I live right outside Baltimore, and travel the Key bridge from time to time traveling there. Waking up this morning hearing the Key bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship was absolutely crazy. That cargo ship was huge, and your right that bridge didn’t stand a chance after the ship took out one of its supports . The response of the port workers & authorities shutting that bridge down in less than 5 minutes after they received a mayday signal was nothing but heroic they saved lots a lives, and I can’t imagine if this happened during rush hours , that bridge is usually packed.
I actually could hear the bridge fall last night, it was so loud I actually walked outside to see what it was, I never in a million years would have thought it was the Key bridge falling down.

The Maryland State Troopers got to the bridge and stopped the traffic in the nick of time.
Seeing the footage of the collision and collapse, it's absolute nightmare fuel. Truly horrific. RIP to the dead and condolences to the families.
It is my understanding (I may be wrong) that none of the people in cars died, and the deaths were all construction workers on the night crew. It would be amazing to survive something like that - horribly traumatizing, mind you, but amazing.

I had forgotten how I was afraid of bridges as a child. The amazing thing was what cured me is that we went to FL when I was in third grade over Christmas and visited Key West. There was a traffic jam and everyone was getting out of cars and walking around and talking to strangers to pass the time and I’m sure 90% were on vacation trying to enjoy themselves . This was the 70’s and it was ok behavior then. I had to keep up with my big sisters was probably why I left the car. I remember being frightened enough I was shaking but the longer it went and nothing happened the more curious and relaxed I became. Cured my bridge phobia then and there.
It's still OK to get out of your car and hang out with fellow strand-ees in such a situation. Just a few days ago, a huge traffic jam at Los Angeles International Airport provoked people to abandon their rides and lug their suitcases on foot into the airport. People have a fear of missing their flights. A justified fear, in this case.

Dr. Grande could have mentioned that they only had 4 minutes from MayDay to impact to close down traffic on the bridge, and they managed to do that! I think the safety protocolls and bridge staff deserve a shout-out. No way to get the roadworkers off the bridge in 4 min, though - that's the real tragedy.

Since 2000, 12 bridges have collapsed due to a ship hitting it. This is not 'unheard of'.
One of the most famous was a railroad bridge, with an Amtrak train getting dunked. Maybe RR bridges don't count? Maybe he was just testing us.
Perhaps the size of the bridge or scale of the tragedy, death toll, or financial impact makes it a singular event.

This bridge should have had large concrete deflectors around the bridge piers.
Not putting in the concrete deflectors was...penny wise and pound foolish.
Roman era bridges had concrete deflectors 2000 years ago to protect the piers from debris during floods.

@esteemedmortal5917 I know! Maybe it just seems to have happened so quick, maybe because the video clips were sped up or something. But it does seem like they stopped the traffic pretty quick. They definitely saved some lives!
Well, the warning would have allowed them to close the bridge in rush hour too, and there was long enough between the warning and the impact for vehicles to finish crossing (or at least be on spans far from the collision), so that would not have made it any worse. It actually would have made it slightly better as drivers would have seen the smoke and perhaps stopped even earlier and especially because the workers thrown into the river would have been able to see, rescuers would have been able to see them and there would have been more boats around to rescue them.
@icturner23 If it was rush hour then more than likely people would have been stopped on the bridge in traffic since it was down to one lane because they were doing road work. They probably wouldn't have been doing the road work at that time, but the lane would have still been closed, severely slowing the traffic.

The State Troopers were able to rush to the bridge and stop the traffic five minutes before the collision because the traffic was so light in the middle of the night. The traffic on the bridge was able to clear for the same reason. During the day everything would have been so much slower because of the traffic.

This is similar to a bridge collapse that happened in Florida in the 1980s. In response that bridge was rebuilt with fenders. I’m surprised nobody had the foresight to add fenders to the Francis c Scott bridge. I know hindsight is 20/20, but we need to be more proactive in updating our infrastructure.

I didn’t know my fear of driving over bridges was called Gephyrophobia! My sister and I both feel like we are going to drive off the bridge and fall below. I am so tense and nervous and I grip the steering wheel like a vice and my stomach is in knots.

There are numerous people down here in Hobart who will still not drive on the Tasman Bridge because of the collapse that happened when a ship hit a pylon in 1975. They take the long way around at considerable time and inconvenience.

This is my hometown. I am so crushed by this tragic event. In the yard where I once lived, we could see the Key Bridge. We are all mourning with those who lost loved ones.
This is incredibly rapid research from Dr Grande - less than a 24 hour turnaround and more analysis and detail than anything on mainstream media! His team surely must include more than himself alone, but he never speaks of it, and I think he would. Research, fact checking, scripting, filming, editing and uploading - that takes time. Does he ever sleep?? Anyway, thank you, Dr Grande, for the fascinating details. May the bridge be rebuilt with better safeguards, since it's a critical throughway for cars and port of entry for ships.

He just reads the wikipedia page to get all the key details. It's really not that hard. Contrary to what people think, wikipedia is actually a very reputable news source and can't be edited by anyone. Articles relating to recent events are often locked and only able to edited and updated by reputable people whom have been given permission.

the harbor policy should be: tugs alongside til Container ship thru the bridge; plus the ship should not be travelling at 8 knots unitl beyond risk area(thru the bridge!!!)

Had it been a terrorist attack as conspiracy theorists are saying, why did it happen during a low traffic time? And why did the ship give enough warning that what traffic there was could be stopped? Terrorists aren't known for making an effort to reduce casualties.

Here in Michigan, we had a Yugo go over the side of the Mackinaw Bridge back in 1989 when a gust of wind caught the car and made the driver lose control. (The driver did not survive.)
As soon as I saw the news about this tragedy, I contacted my family on the east coast to make certain they were alright. Fortunately, they are. I wish that the construction workers fixing the potholes had had the opportunity to get off the bridge before it went down. RIP.

I was never a fan of that bridge, just because the climb was so steep going to the south. You could not see the apex for awhile, just the climb.

The piers were unprotected, oblivious of the danger of collision. Where there are ice flows in a river during spring breakup it is essential to protect piers with rip rap that basically functions like a tiny island sufficient in size to prevent dislodgement of the pier.
Or separate impact rock filled caissons to deflect a wayward ship..... like other bridges have in busy ports

At least Baltimore had warning. We did not get that with the I-35 bridge. Sad thing is that after that our state officials have been warn others about bridge structural integrity issue that I don't think has been taken as seriously as it should be.

Very similar to the Tasman Bridge collapse in 1975(?) in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The Tasman Bridge was struck by the ship ‘Lake Illawarra’. Sadly, several people lost their lives.

It went down like a house of cards. The bridge was doomed but the loss of life was completely avoidable. The road workers should have been evacuated when officials claimed to have stopped traffic-- I saw multiple semitrailers going across the bridge just before the ship hit it.

A ship crashed into a bridge in Tasmania Australia. 2 cars saw that the bridge had fell and braked. They stopped with the front wheels over the edge and on balance point to tip.

Reminds me of the 14th street bridge in D.C. when a plane crashed into it. The D.C. Metro crashed the same day but that crashed got buried in the news by the footage of the people freezing in the Potomac River…they were on their way to Florida.
Lived in the DMV area, for over two decades. I flourished out there and currently live on the West Coast. Drove through the Harbor Tunnel and drove over the bridge that's no more...a short cut through Dundulk and beyond. 😭😭😭 The fragility of this life.

one more, though... in '89 when an earthquake struck, the Bay area double decker bridge crushed people in a matter of seconds.
And we had driven over that thing an uncomfortably short time before. Probably the only time we ever drove on it, then the earthquake destroyed it.

As far as transportation related fears go, I am astounded that more people are not afraid of tractor trailers. Being a truck driver myself I am terrified of them, and I have to use a lot of psychological coping strategies to do my job because I see a lot of the worst outcomes that for most people are a low probability events. It just boggles my mind how recklessly people drive around semi trucks. It has started to make me think that anger and frustration are the most effective ways of overcoming fear, but doesn't always lead to good decision making.
Do you mind explaining a few of things you see that are dangerous? Maybe things you would prefer people driving cars did do (or didn't do) for the safety of everyone? I ask because when I was taught to drive, 15 years ago, I learned the basics, like I don't drive behind an 18 wheeler, especially too closely. I understand it's safer to pass them if you are matching their speed/trying to go faster than the tractor trailer. I know when passing you don't want to stay in their blind spot and if you can't see their side mirror, they can't see your car. Lastly, just being aware that semi-trucks are always going to need much more distance to come to a stop than a car. But all of those driving tips were given to me by car-drivers, never an actual truck driver. Is there something you wish those driving on the roads with you knew?

I try my best not to drive parallel to them. I've had some drift into my lane multiple times over the years. If I can't safely pass pretty easily I hang back until I can.
Tractors themselves are very dangerous. There are regular serious injuries and deaths every year from accidents.
My step dad was a truck driver and I always watch for them and am very careful how I move around them.

This incident reminded me very much of the Sunshine Skyway and Tasman Bridge Collapses as both disasters were almost identical in that a massive ship experienced a misguided adventure into a water born overpass due to negligence and incompetency.

Having lived my life in Northern Virginia, I was familiar with this bridge. Like many others, I was shocked and saddened to wake up to this news
6:00, There is a bridge across the Chesapeake that has a service that allows nervous or fearful drivers to hire a driver for 25 dollars. Called the Bay Bridge it is 5 miles long.
Yes it is famous for being scary.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which I've driven over more times that can be counted, gets closed if the wind is too strong. Sometimes when the wind is high cars can drive over but semis with empty trailers can't drive over.
My brother hates driving over that bridge. If he’s driving and I’m with him, we usually switch before getting there.

Power was out. When it came back on, gaining control of the rudder was the first priority. Then it went back off.
That is a question for the investigators to ask. It is standard practice to sound the ship's horn 6-7 times and sound the internal collision alarm before impact. Given the latest reports, the ship did suffer a casualty of some kind that rendered the vessel not under command. Power may not have been available due the casualty.

Upon analysis, none of the bridge supports were protected by rounded concrete, neither at the front nor behind of any of them, even though the bridge has been open to traffic since 1977; 47 years ago exactly three days ago.

Tasman Bridge disaster 1975, Hobart, Tasmania. A ship collided with a bridge pier causing collapse of a section. The ship also sunk and is still there.
This was a foreseeable incident, yet no attempt had been made to protect the Francis Scott Key bridge piers. Protective structures are in common use worldwide to guard against just this thing. Compared to the loss of life and disruption now caused, these measures would have been cheap.
Seems to have been an amazing amount of neglect allowed over the last several decades in Maryland....

I am glad you brought this up, as I was just thinking about "fear" related to bridges. I have driven over an old bridge across a major US river since I have learned to drive. Now the bridge is older has had many repairs, and now has a steel grate surface that pulls vehicle tires, buzzes and you can see through it. It is also narrow. The older I get, the more intimidating the bridge is. This won't stop me from crossing any bridge, but I can already feel it in my soul that I will be tense and thinking of this disaster, my heart might skip a few beats!

As a new resident of Maryland I'm sorry now that I never saw the Key Bridge. I've always taken the tunnel system when driving through Maryland. I love that this bridge was named after Francis Scott Key. Time for me to start exploring my new state.

Loosing control of a cargo ship headed for a bridge. I would have trouble watching that screen in a movie. I can’t imagine actually witnessing it firsthand. I feel terrible for everyone on the boat and especially for the six bridge workers who perished
Not all bridges are flat. The one that outright terrified me was somewhere near Star City Louisiana. My fear was not of water, heights, or collapse, or performance issues, lol, I just thought my car wouldn't "stick" to such a steep grade straight up. I was staring straight up the bridge from the bottom, and it did not look safe to me, a girl who has driven mountain passes all my life. Our passes don't go up like that, we wind around, gradually, to the top and wind gradually down the other side. This looked crazy to me. Finally, I got off to the side, got a different angle, and also reasoned with myself, "Look, there's a box truck going over and it's not slipping backwards, and it's heavier than your car." After a serious amount of dithering and some crying, in the nearest convenience store, where the clerk told me, "This happens all the time, sometimes they hire my nephew to drive them over the bridge," I got back on the road, picked a truck with a big fat ass to follow, and stared at that truck and nothing else, up, up, up this stupidly high angle bridge. I hated it. I also asked, at the store, "Is there another road I can take?" Nope. It was either do the bridge or begin life over in the middle of Louisiana.
I know that bridge. It's like looking at a vertical wall and is a very creepy drive.
The Huey Long bridge in New Orleans is pretty scary.
