Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in 2000. It is the first title of the Perfect Dark series and follows the story of Carrington Institute agent Joanna Dark as she attempts to stop an extraterrestrial conspiracy by rival corporation dataDyne. A different game set in the same fictional universe, also titled Perfect Dark, was released for the Game Boy Color shortly afterwards. Both Perfect Dark and its Game Boy Color counterpart feature a compatibility mode that allows certain gameplay options within the game to alternatively be unlocked via a Transfer Pak.
As a spiritual successor to Rare's 1997 title GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark shares many gameplay similarities with its predecessor and runs on an upgraded version of its engine. The game features a single-player mode that requires players to complete a series of missions under certain difficulty settings. It also features a range of multiplayer options, including a co-operative mode and traditional deathmatch settings. Perfect Dark was developed over the course of three years and is technically one of the most advanced games for the Nintendo 64, offering an optional high resolution graphics mode, widescreen support, and Dolby's surround sound. A Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak is required to access the game's single-player mode and most of the multiplayer features.
Upon release, Perfect Dark received critical acclaim and commercial success, selling more than three million units worldwide. Critics widely praised its customisable multiplayer modes and replay value, but some criticised its low and inconsistent frame rate. The game received the BAFTA Interactive Entertainment Moving Images Award for 2000 and the Golden Satellite Award for Best Interactive Product in 2001. The game is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. A remaster, also titled Perfect Dark, with enhanced graphics and online multiplayer, was released for the Xbox 360 in 2010.
This game was ahead of its time
A gurl hero...a black president...aliens... flyin things ;)
@@brandybrand8198 way to completely miss the point
@@jonny9425 You know what his point was from that?
Definitely was.
This game could had been made by hideo kojima for all we know.
“N64 EXPANSION PAK DETECTED”
Incredible light effects, in this game you can shoot the lamps and control the intensity of the light. The enemies moviments are so realistic. 20 years ago had a game with this quality.
Basically what Unreal did 2 years earlier.
@@FloosWorld_AoE But Perfect Dark ran on a dinky 95mhz processor with 8mb of memory, or about 1/4 the clock speeds and 1/8th the memory of an average computer from that time. Not only did it look great, but it had fluid animations and a weapon variety that put Unreal to shame.
@@rubiconnn At 15 fps ....
@@parazels83But again, on 1996 console hardware. No comparison. Rare made a game that sometimes blew Unreal out of the water, graphically, on a processor with 60% of the speed of Unreal's MINIMUM specs and half the RAM.
This game is absolutely ahead of its time. One of the best fps ever
indeed. Even with the Ram cart, made it look better. Love this game, still play it now and then; my mum is prety good at it
Yup.
@@koilamaoh4238 wow thats pretty cool that you play with your mom ngl
definitely, still play it loads now
Isn't it *OUTRAGEOUS* how enemies in this game react more realistically to getting shot than most modern shooters nowadays?
There are even some random reaction lines when you stealth kill. I shot someone in the head in the submarine level once, and his buddy ran over and then started crying, saying "He was my best... friend..." Aaaa, the memories
This game used motion-capture, so the enemies' movements are actually based on real physical movements from the developers.
@@Peter_1986 Exactly.
Same Death Animations like Goldeneye.
Their reactions to getting shot are so bad and stale. No way youre watching the same video. I remember as a kid me and friends making fun of how theyre shot and die by reenacting it and laughing.
Still playing this masterpiece on my N64 🖤
I play it on an Emulator at 1080p 30fps for free...m0r0n
In my opinion, this was the APEX of what the Nintendo 64 was capable of. I'm not an FPS guy, never have been, but the gameplay, music and multiplayer options had me and my friends busy for months. So fun.
Rare absolutely pushed the hardware to the limit. This was everything that could be done on the 64.
Im literally so overcome by joy i never thought in a million years i would ever find this lost memory from my childhood
Same bro 😎
I forgot how comical the enemy dialogue is. "my gun!"
Perfect Dark is literally a playable movie.
I love this channel. Brings me back to my childhood.
Thank you! I'm really pleased to hear that :)
Although I played Golden Eye aswell... PERFECT DARK is like the prototype for all modern first person shooters as far as Capabilities and features of weapons.... And lighting, to A.I physics, gun modes, and ove all feel... I playing right now, with a PS3 controller on my laptop, still enjoying it!
I had the game, and the system it was my first console and I could never understand how to get to the story lol, I’m not sure if I had a weird copy or what but it would only ever let me play multiplayer and if I didn’t have someone with me to play it, I had the creepiest ai bots lol
@@yeehawnation8015 I think it's the first option on the menu.. it's has missions
The Laptop Gun is my favorite fps weapon ever.
@jeffy Cooper oh yeah that makes sense then cause I’d never head of the ramcart lol
Yes. Goldeneye was the first FPS done well on console. And Perfect Dark, well, perfected it.
You can tell this game pushed the limits of the N64. It was a great send-off for Rare and the N64.
Nostalgia. I'm an expert in both this game and Goldeneye 007, and I still own and beaten it 100%. Perfect Dark was pretty advanced for its time (well it is Rareware), and I still think this is the best FPS ever. I always love tearing enemies up with the DY357-LX (basically the original Golden Gun from the novel). Some levels in the hardest difficulty are a pain.
My word of advice on when doing Special Agent and especially Perfect Agent, unless you're aiming for cheats, DON'T rush the levels. Take your time when facing enemies.
Perfect dark was something else and for its time it was (and even in today standards) was a very complete fps. I will always remember it.
I loved playing this game and Golden Eye 007 as a kid. Astral Chain reminds me of both of these games. Even the sound tracks.
Militant Pacifist But Astral Chain is a hack ‘n’ slash game whereas Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are first-person shooters.
"Of course Joanna, of course. I believe you."
Best part of the entire game.
best N64 game ever.
I miss the music and the character driven stories of the 90's, both in video games and in anime - we no longer have such elements.
This was one of the first games I played as a kid, and for the past 20 years or so, I couldnt ever remember the name of the game, just figured it out tonight finally and it is a very strange feeling of nostalgia when you start to remember the levels you use to constantly play and havent touched it since. Literally. The startup screen with the music que is what confirmed it for me and I couldnt even remember that until I found this. Actually unlocked a new memory, this game was absolutely amazing and Im definitely gonna be playing it again soon!
PD is my childhood and one of the best fps ever made. I still play it all the time, it just never gets old, so freaking awesome.
Expansion Pak combined with increasing the sharpness & adding some brightness on my CRT TVs made this game look real clean & beautiful way back when.
The slowdown was intolerable.
This game was so much fun back in the day!
What fond memories this video revive, I remember my time playing hours after hours this game to the point that I finished all missions in perfect agent. Just an amazing game. I miss my n64 ! with Perfect Dark. Thanks for uploading your gameplay.
Every Friday night, smoke a fatty, play perfect dark. damn fun.
I remember buying this a couple of days after release for £69.99 and £29.99 for the ram pack, the game blew me away, I loved it and still do to this day.
Possibly my most favorite game ever
Aw man love this game..the nostalgia, me and my brother use to play this game 24/7 back in the day..thanks for uploading ❤🔥
We need it on Nintendo Switch
With the permision of microsoft, but I guess they would rather release it on a Xbox console
@@spookyspookat5038it’s coming
The music in this game is just incredible
I was just thinking that this game was based in 2023. Yet, here we are. Nothing like it 😂
This game saved my life when I was divorced and depressed.
25 years ago? How old are you 60?
@@jhkuno88 Getting there. Glad I had my time when I did looking around now. This game was the most important in my life, and was literal medicine for me during one of life's nadirs.
It's crazy because although released about the same time, Perfect Dark went with the 007 GoldenEye template rather than the far better graphics of 007 The World Is Not Enough. Maybe even then they were capitalizing on the Nostalgia factor?
Different developers. Rare had their own style and like people say: don't fix what is not broken.
World is not Enough was made by Eurocon, not Rare.
My brother and I always called this game “Girl James Bond” because we played this as well as Goldeneye lol
"GET HER!"
*Said by one henchman to himself every time*
Exactly 😂
A game ahead of its time. It was set in the year 2023.
I had 64 back n the days & never played this game 🎮 wow great graphics
Bought this game at The Wiz on 86th Street and 4th in Brooklyn day it came out in 2000. Geez time flies. Goldeneye was a blast for 4 player couch coop but by 2000 we were all in different colleges and places so this game was more me alone with bots. Good times
My favorite game since childhood
I remember getting slaughtered by my friend Zach in multiplayer lol. Swear to god the farsight put me in a saline solution of rage sometimes, or the fly by wire rockets lmao. If you chance upon seeing this my friend, I miss those times bro, I hope all is well and stays that way for you.
The fly by wire rockets were a lot of fun LOL.
This and Goldeneye 007 were the days before Call of Duty...lol
O Melhor game que eu já joguei em toda minha vida’ de lá pra cá não houve outrem!
It's 2023 now !
Perfect Dark is set in 2023.
My mind was blown when this game came out after Goldeneye. I couldn’t believe the depth and detail.
My childhood! 🥺💙
ok babe
One of the best Thing was the Multiplayer
how did the nintendo 64 had multiplayer if there was no wifi back then?
@@joemarieschulman3221 Split screen.
nice, looks like played on actual N64 most of these gameplays feel like being played on emulators
The perfect soundtrack
I remember i used to play this game back in the 2000s like in Summer 2005 with my cousin and my brother when we were kids I was 11 my cousin was around 10 and my brother was around 14 that year now we are in our 30s but im the only one still playing this game but i still have my cousin’s copy of the Perfect Dark 64 Cartridge that still has his save file from almost 20 years ago and I will never sell the game still got all the memories on it .
I haven't played this in years, though I was more of a GoldenEye fan. Still a great game though.
How did I never play this game man. I had n64 and everything 😢
Did this have a game mode where you could fight bots and fold one of your guns and place it on a wall like a turret?
Combat Simulator? Laptop gun? Yeah this game had it all
@@thetoad5407 Oh sweet thanks. I can't find proof of this game having it, but I was told I liked this a lot when I was little.
I played this game on 360 a while back, not the whole way through. Now I'm doing it old school, N64, 1.2 controls, old cry tv. Probably not good enough to do perfect agent my first go around but that's what'll make it fun to come back to
I hate it when a car park is my only point of ingress.
I can really see the Goldeneye type vibe in this game. Especially with the enemies animations.
That's because it's the same developers. They made this instead of the tomorrow never dies sequel that everyone was hyped for. And Goldeneye has nothing on this.
@@l0rd0gaming51 I wouldn't say nothing... It was far more popular.
@@clearlydee9257 Of course it was more popular: James Bond is the world 's favourite fictional spy and has been for over half a century. He's more entertaining than Joanna Dark, which was a brand new character, and not as catchy as Bond. We've all watched the movies and I've read some of Fleming's work, so the game was going to be a cult classic. There is also the nostalgia element. However, Perfect Dark is the objectively superior game. The team worked on it for years to get it just right. They took everything about Goldeneye and made it better. The graphics, the animations, the variety of weapons and gadgets. The secondary weapons functions was never seen before in a 1st person shoot 'em up. The enemies were far more intelligent and fought more strategically. There was the co-operative mission modes and also counter operative, and the multiplayer arena was something else. More levels, more engaging combat scenarios, and you could add A.I controlled simulants so it never got boring, because you could always tweak the settings and do something different. Perfect Dark is simply far, far superior.
This was a better campaign than Goldeneye, the multi-player was great too. The intro music, the story, it was the coolest shit a 12 year old could want.
This blew goldeneye out the window for me when I was a kid it was was like wrestlemania 2000 vs No Mercy
And today I bought a brand new & sealed Pefect Dark. Good memories.
Nice! Where from?
My dad never let me play this game because it had guns I was like 7 I never go to experience this game but I did know about it
Congratilation to the Grant Kirkhope and to Robin Beanland by composed the game's music.
Yes! Musical masterpieces!
I was so addicted to this game back in the day. Oh and i still remember Elvis lol, its burnt in my memory.., i remember thinking back then thats a stupid name for an Alien lol
I use to Love this game 🔥🔥🔥🔥 man brings me back to the 2000’s wave 🌊
Wow. This is nothing less of nostalgia. Wouldn't it be great if Nintendo remastered it and put it on the Switch?
Well guess who bought Rare ? Microsoft. They still hold the rights I think.
Its the same with Softimage 3D, they bought it, sold it and released DirectX shortly after.
He sweeps these rooms just like i used to do back when i was a kid...
Nostalgia, melhor jogo que já joguei
Awesome Longplay
I remember playing this when I was like 6 or so and couldn't figure out what in the world to do lol
Yo, can you do jet force gemini?
Definitely! It might take a bit, but Jet Force will definitely appear on the channel one day.
Nice
This was my favorite game for n64
I fell in love with game from the minute I played it. I could never get passed the Alien ship/planet though
me emocione mucho cuando iba a rescatar al marcianito, despues me atore en la mission en marte y no pude avanzar mas jajaja, ya hace como 15 años de eso
The reboot in development hell.at least 3 years away
9:00 Whenever I'd hear that I would piss myself laughing lol
This game is a classic ❤️
A great game from solo play to multi player.
These were mine and my bebes favorite game! Loved to collect all those weapons!
I bet Nintendo of Japan executives got nervous about this game with all the violence and all the godammits. They wanted a family friendly system for games more like Donkey Kong
The Perfect FPS. Pun intended 😂
This was like the arcade shooters from the movies back when I was young but you didn't have to pay a couple quarters and you could explore
Remember i got this game when it first came out. I need the exoansion pack to play full story. Finally got the expansion pack and met elvis lol one if my favorite games tikl this day
This game was my first ever favourite game in my life
Remember the rumble pack you had to get for it?
Nostalgia.
Best thing about this game?
Why the music and sound effects of course.
i remember having this game and playing with my brother, we were too young so we had no idea of what to do, so we just walked on the roof
Im a ps1 guy but this was next level
this game has 8K quality and the new RTX and when you play you are blown away
This is another one I hope they port over to the pc as they did with Turok.
Turok was released on PC at the same time
these graphics were crazy, cant blieve it ran on a nintendo64
The reloading animation was crazy because of course goldeneye didn't have that
@@OhioMike1987 the Phoenix was the coolest
True, but have you seen World is Not Enough? It has reload animations, too.

Laptop gun ❤️
i Love this Game😭😍
4 people weren't able to complete the game

To me, Joanna Dark is the perfect example of a good "strong female character";
a female character who is badass and brave, but who isn't all self-conscious about it, and who is also perfectly capable of working together with male characters in a mutually respectful way. We need more female characters like her.
One of my fav EVER! ❤❤❤
The game still feels pretty modern
It’s crazy how this is EXACTLY the same as goldeneye… lol the entire engine is the exact same
If rare wasn't Buy by Microsoft maybe se have a perfect dark Game for the gamecube
So my friends which one is better?
Goldeneye or Perfect Dark?
You decide.
Personally, I like goldeneye more because I also love James Bond and Goldeneye the movie. That being said, "control" is one of the worst levels I've played in any FPS ever.
@@N64Archive same here. Im more fond of Goldeneye coz I love the james bond movies but perfect dark is still A much worthy title from rare.
@@N64Archive haha, that's the one in Cuba with all the drone guns isn't it? Yeah, its difficulty in anything higher than agent is still legendary. I thought Perfect Dark took Goldeneye to the next level. The multiplayer options made this game better for me.
PD is the best game of EVER for me and GE is there near it
Tough one, because I love both games. To be serious, though Goldeneye 007 is more nostalgic and had better music, I like Perfect Dark more because of the improved gameplay.
