  • Ex-Post Office manager Nicki Arch reacts to TalkTV's exclusive secret recordings of Post Office Director of Comms Richard Taylor.
Hundreds of Post Office branch managers were convicted of swindling money on the basis of evidence from the technology giant’s flawed Horizon accounting system.
Rishi Sunak on Wednesday announced that hundreds of subpostmasters in England and Wales could have their names cleared by the end of the year under blanket legislation to be introduced within weeks.
Nicki says: "Their arrogance and lies have wrecked people's lives. To think someone of that calibre can talk like that - he needs to be prosecuted."

This is why so many in positions of power get away with it. You can go back to the 1970's (or even earlier) to find examples of those in a position of power abusing that power. It costs money to take it to court and most if not all just do not have that kind of money . That those abusing power seem to be able to dip into the deep pockets of the taxpayer just means you are already on the backfoot. Often it is only if those abusing make a really dumb mistake in their arrogance that they get caught. (I've heard of one being recorded basically trying to extort money on a recording they knew was being made, that was a tragic story in that two of those who were put under pressure committed suicide, one by shot gun, the other by gas, others lost homes and livelihoods, this from the 1970s and it sounds very familiar)

An aspect I do not understand about this Post Office scandal is - how anyone can design, order and use a computer system that does not generate a paper audit trail - how else can auditors verify the accounts of any organisation without such a trail? Who was responsible for putting in a system that cannot be checked?

Also in my experience whenever a manual system was replaced by a computer system it was done on a gradual phasing in method, the computer system would be installed and would operate in tandem with the manual system for a trial period so that all teething troubles could be discovered and resolved. The computer system would only go fully live when it was certain that it was working properly. Was this done with Horizon???

II agree. I worked with IT systems since the 70s in conjunction with MOD & as IT evolved we avoided many of the bugs that occurred with the Horizon system because we worked alongside the programmers testing the system before each update was introduced. On many occasions real test info was set up & tested alongside existing systems to see if they produced identical results.@@AlunThomas-mp5qo

The use of simple common sense should have told them( Post Office management) that hundreds of respected postmasters don't suddenly turn into criminals, or were they so out of touch with their staff? For whatever reasons, this is a crime commited by The Post Office..and who's to say that it wasn't a premeditated 'plan' by them. Can they prove otherwise?

EXACTLY my sentiments!! I was Deputy Manager in a busy Post Office in the South East for many years & I helped train up to 15-20 staff when Horizon first came in and it was my job to balance all those tills in the office once a week & it was rare to find any till more than a few pounds short! I find it ludicrous that there could be 700 Postmasters suddenly taking £'1,000's... any one can see high up in the Post Office that its just impossible! I'm amazed its dragged on this long, the ones at the top should be ashamed of their incompetence & FULL compensation should be given to ALL those Postmasters affected!

Who remembers that great Royal Mail management idea that cost a fortune (£500,000) and bought nothing but ridicule from everyone. If you said “Consignia” approved by non other than Stephen Byers then give yourself a pat on the back. The £500,000 only covered a “consultancy fee” and didn’t include all the other costs associated with the stupid idea which was then abandoned after five minutes.
