- Rishi Sunak on Wednesday announced a new law to exonerate hundreds of Post Office branch managers caught up in the Horizon IT scandal.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said they were victims of “one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our nation’s history”.
Hundreds of sub-postmasters were convicted of swindling money on the basis of evidence from a flawed IT system.
Public anger saw former Post Office boss Paula Vennells hand back her CBE amid the fallout. Now, more pressure has been put on other bosses and the political parties involved.
Nick Wallis, the journalist at the heart of seeking justice for the victims, speaks to Conservative peer Lord James Arbuthnot - another campaigner who helped seek truth for those involved.
Lord Arbuthnot says no political party comes out of the scandal “very well".

Lord Arbuthnot REALLY comes well out of all of this as a very decent, intelligent and honest politician unlike those we see and hear every day on the news and TV. He unlike most politicians does not pause at all to answer a question to him, because he KNOWS full well the answer and he gives it in a very clear, pertinent and to the point manner. Most of today's politicians will pause and think how they can answer the question by not doing so and going off on a tangent so they look as if they are answering the question.
The guy comes over as the type of Prime Minister we now so much need and not the vacuous, self-serving egotists we have had for the last 30 years, i.e. Bliar.
Ive never been a Fan of Any MP ,But This Guy "Thumbs Up " .Thank You
Thank god for people like you 🇬🇧👍keep on going the country is behind you. 👏👏👏
Nick deserves so much credit for what is happening now. He's a fantastic journalist.
Davey is finished
The guy is always telling other people to resign.
This is KARMA.
😂
So let's get this correct, y'all only want accountability for the one former Post Office minister who isn't a Tory? Gtfoh
@@BarryDiegoLondon-cy9ij I’m not a tory and just can’t stand the little weasel man Davey.
You just don’t feel the joy of the POST MASTERS GRATITUDE , THANKS , AND APPRECIATION , FOR YOUR VERY HARD WORK , AND MOST OF ALL YOUR HONESTY FOR PROVING THEM INNOCENT SIR , but you should feel it from all honest respectful hard working people in England , that live a humble honest and hard working life while paying their taxes !!!! WE THE PEOPLE THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH 🙏🤲
It’s a real shame a tv drama has to be shown to enable the postmasters to get compensation
This disgraceful, devastating and totally avoidable catastrophe SHOULD NOT... be righted at the tax payers expense! There is a fundamental reason this so-called sham was not dealt with by the powers that be. I feel so sad and upset for all these innocent people. It’s about time, Government stepped in to protect these victims. And as usual, the ENTITLED are rewarded handsomely with the likes of an CBE TALISMAN.
I’m kind of half and half here. If we were to wait for everyone responsible for this mess to pay a price then I suspect by the time this finished through the courts more of the post masters will have passed away. Better to compensate people now and then recover as much from Fujitsu, Post Office senior managers, “investigators” who had found post masters guilty, politicians!
The judges dont come out well either. When will we see the judges who allowed unsafe convictions appear before the inquiry?
Even Tony Blair knew there were massive issues and was the first to cover this up!
This is a massive hole started by Tony Blair that just kept getting deeper since 1999.
Both Labour and the Tories were instrumental in helping both the Post Office and Fujitsu cover this up!
Yes, there should be an inquiry, but in an instant all postmasters should be freed of all convictions, handed £5 million each and the money recouped by the government from prosecution of both Post Office and Fujitsu.
The fact that both Labour and the Tories protected the corporations instead of the people is the most disgusting of all!
Whom is REALLY to blame for this fiasco? Hey, Cameron and Blair, are you listening?
Where did the Police get their IT system from?
Guess!
@@bigpants6121 Fujitsu as well?
I think so. Some 400k records went missing but eventually came back!. It appears that Sunak also signed off contracts with Fujitsu after it was proven Horizon had f*cked up.@@rimini201
Ultimately Blair, this was one of his projects, why did the PO sign off on this system after the DWP refused to? who put pressure on them to do that? almost certainly the government to avoid the embarrassment of the entire contract being a write off and all the money spent on it thus far being wasted .. this was almost certainly signed off on under pressure to save face for Blair and it seems likely he would have been behind any pressure brought on the PO to sign off on the thing .. this all started on his watch.
Where is bliars human rights missis ,why is she not speaking up for these blatantly wronged post masters .bliars grubby fingerprints are all over the mess.thanks sir tony bliar another fine mess you’ve made .time to give your ill gotten medal back
Good point.
They all just turned a blind eye hoping it would go way they should be prosecuted
All emails will suddenly vanish.. Computer glitch perhaps
Its not just Fujitsu and its not just the post office. Its all the big players in all government departments over many many years.
The blame is wholly and completely with the management of Fujitsu and the post office management who clearly decided between themselves to blame the post office employees. No one in either company stopped it so the CEO's of both companies are solely to blame. Certainly the tax payers (us) should not be paying - it should all come out of both company's profits until paid off. And don't you dare put mail prices up!
no it's not. No govt bothered to look into why hundreds of innocent people were prosecuted. Do you know much about the case?
No it's not - it's the Post Office, Fujitsu AND the government
@@rimini201 I believe there was a criminal conspiracy to defraud the postmasters from the start.
@@rimini201 Throw in the people who said "You're the only one" over & over. It doesn't matter if they were instructed to say it, they kept parroting the line & destroyed innocent people by making them feel alone & afraid.
Vennells earned the most. She was paid this money to take responsibility. She has not and will not take responsibility - so she must pay back all bonuses, pension and pay except the minimum wage must be returned to the tax payer. Police must investigate.
Correct- however it all started with Mandy and Blair - these two have a lot to answer for
well done to this man .normally i hate tories but i take my hat off to this man there is one good un amongst the rotten rabble
Billions of pounds invested and the UK STILL COULDN'T ADD UP.
Journalists might want to look at what one MP Andrew Bridgen is doing on another issue and now another national inquiry has been suspended. Thank goodness a solution to all these problems is on the horizon, a digital currency and digital ID run by tech firms given great contracts by officials with vested interests- can anybody see a problem with this.
There's no digital system that can't be corrupted, crashed or hacked if there's enough temptation and a digital currency would be ripe for the attentions of the ungodly ..... and who would write and maintain the software and where would they and the vast amounts of digital storage required be located ?
All these calls for resignations, re-paying stolen money and honours returned........this needs mass imprisonments and stripping of titles.
horizon is advertised as a system for SMALL companies. Why did a LARGE Post Office buy this system????
In any crisis, there is someone who is in power or has influence that comes from nowhere and changes the course of history, this gentleman is one of them! A genuine man who really made a difference. ❤
A lord worthy of his title, can't say I'm a supporter of the class system but this man exudes class. God bless.
These two men are wonderful!
Lord Arbuthnot and Nick Wallace!
There are heroes and villains in this disgusting scandal! Not forgetting g the fabulous Alan Bates who should be knighted for his years of fighting for justice!
The villains should be in prison asap!
This debacle tells you all you need to know about the political class and the fact democracy is a sham.
Still nothing on the anti boycott bill?
The Post Office can always use QUICKEN Bookkeeping software!!😂
We should not be paying taxes for these people. Prison would be too comfortable
If I gave you £1000 that you had to spend Bon bets, how much would you put on Venomous Vennels seeing the inside of a jail cell ?
How much would you put on a double for Venomous and Mone to both see jail time
Zero I’m afraid
They will just blame each other!😢
Too many people were complicit in this travesty. My hearts goes out to everyone affected by this.
Snowball is rolling
She should be in jail
All I can say is it sounds like the Fujitsu angle was put out there specifically in order to deflect blame from government officials. I may be wrong, it could turn out all of this was caused by a malicious Fujitsu employee...but I'd count that as the least likely hypothetical. I've worked at jobs where a crappy software product was introduced before, and I believe many other people have experienced that. How management responds to that poorly decided purchase (which is 100% what that is) is how you judge them as managers, and the board members (or owner) in turn for their acumen in hiring competent managers. I suppose if a manager made that poor initial decision but possessed the means to offload the blame for that onto lower tier employees, we'd see a lot more stuff like this happen. I get that with the police themselves this sort of dynamic is almost unavoidable, but I don't see why that's the case with the PO.
In short, you can't fix this kind of mistake without publicly acknowledging (one of) the most expensive category of prior error, and with politics and government contracts involved not only is there no incentive to take that blame, there well could be actual financial crimes underpinning the entire arrangement in the first place.
Classic case of a government setting up a monopoly, same for all the water authorities that became money pits for inefficient management looking after their own interests at the expense of customers.
The labour party dodged it for 10/11 years. Then Ed Davey for 2 years. So Keir Starmer, who could have stopped prosecution in his role as DPP, will blame the tories, no doubt, for taking less than 3 years. He probably, though, will keep his trap shut if he has any sense.
what exactly did your Tories do for 10 years. Dont give me crap!
@bigpants6121 Identified the problem. Sorted it. Now it's all about compensation. That's the difference.
Sorted it! You tell the innocent SPMs that, what nonsense
@TerryJC1971 Wasn't it a tory MP that helped sort it. Have you watched it.
Why wasn't it sorted in the first 10/11 years 1999 - 2010. Then, still not sorted the 2 years after under Ed Davey.
Tory MP James Arbuthnott was the one who believed there was a problem and was instrumental in helping the sub post masters.
Why has it taken so long for the law courts to sort it once it became clear that it was a computer fault.
What's even more disappointing is once again, the taxpayer has to fork up the compensation. You wonder why taxes are so high when you have gross incompetence in public owned companies with incompetent directors. It's them who should be made to pay for all this. More so, Fugitsu Horizon, who should pay the lions share of the cost because of faulty software.
A lot of the prosecution could have been stopped by Keir Starmer had he acted in his DPP role. So now he will be acting sheepish and keep his trap shut. Just in case people don't know what his role was in, this sorry affair.
@@alandraper7901 I have followed this for years. No politician sorted this, the one Tory who tried to help was in TV yesterday saying he achieved little it was all Mr Bates efforts. It wasn’t sorted backside our society think bankers and business leaders are god like and can’t be challenged and have been given the keys to the kingdom. They are in charge… profits trumps even law now
What about Adam Crozier. ????
Public inquiry mean a soft cover up it will say what happen and then know one will ever be held accountable for it fact and then it be the tax payer who will pick up the bill Fujitsu will get of with it
Be no investigation
Victims only get 75k less fees
that's what i would like to know, did it go higher than the post office?
offical?
You will find that most of these people will be shareholders me thinks in for a penny lie lie lie
