Howard Levy you are the craziest. Jazz classical blues rockin bluegrass harmonica player on God's planet Earth. I love you but I salute you...God bless you for still inspiring harmonica players worldwide to keep climbing higher.
It doesn't "seem" real...I'm amazed again, even though deep down, I expect it from you! truly exceptional! I don't understand why there aren't 10 times more subscribers for what you offer. Thanks for all !
@@HowardLevyland that’s music to my ears. I think your authentic, unaffected, down-to-earth style and way of communicating sets you apart from other genius musicians. I wish you’d come to Maui so I could experience you and your music in person.
I was working again on Rocky Top with a harp player friend on the same day you uploaded this. And all week I've been going crazy over videos of your Bach performances and with Flecktones. I'm really thrilled to see these new videos!
Vocabulary - the juice of this wonderful inspiring video! My additional tips: Listen, Listen and then Listen again to favourite pieces of the genre, then bring them to your instrument with the technique you already know, and learn from experts already on the genre and try to figure out how they play the lines. Lastly, add your own touch and lines to the music you already familiar with, to make it your own. Such a great video Howard, enjoyed it very much! Cheers
Mind-blowing material. It brings me back 30+ years to when I was an exchange student in Charlotte, Michigan, and a bluegrass festival that somehow visited. With my friend Brian, I got to shake hands with the great Jimmy Martin, without any concept of what that really meant. A strong memory is hearing a harmonica player busking with the banjo and mandolin players -- this guy was playing licks as fast as the string players! It has remained a deep mystery to me how this could even be possible. I have a hunch that practice is involved. Practice + knowing how to climb the ladder, gradually. Cheers from a guy who's still at a very safe level above ground :)
Always an interesting perspective from such a wonderful and talented artist. Howard defies musical categories. Howard Levy is “beyond category”. (With a nod to E.K.Ellington).
Having taken your course for a year online, I've learned a ton from your material. I'm wondering outside of that set of lessons, how I can access a library of licks like that that I can practice... particularly the up and down scale-based licks. So amazing! Thanks for sharing!
You mean at the price of Howards course that you don't get tons of licks and exercises? What does he actually teach then? I would think of buying some instructional dvd's or stuff but the price of that Artist Works stuff is way too high. Ridiculous. What seems worse is you don't have access to the material forever that you've paid for, unless i'm mistaken. I bought Howard's dvd. I don't know why he doesn't do more stuff like that?
@@garysellars8914 Whoa there! You get a ton of licks and exercises. I don't know what's on the DVD. But, you also get feedback periodically. I was just wondering if there was more or less a central place where one could get some of the specific licks here. I personally thought the course was worth every penny and more. There's a beginner series, and intermediate series, and an advanced series (the latest having much to do with overblows with which I still struggle). You can get the ArtistWorks subscriptions at a lower price several times per year with their discount sales. I personally recommend it.
@@richcruz But you don't get to own what you paid for do you? Is it all downloadable so you can review it offline whenever you want if your subscription ends?
What happens if you have been playing for a few years but just have never been able to do over blows? From your experience, does a harmonica need to be adjusted professionally to successfully do over blows? I have watched every video out there on them. My Hohners just won't do them. Any advice?
Hi, Howard! Amazing as always! Do you use any kind of articulation for phrasing on such high speeds? Like "Ta-ka" or "Da-ga" or else. Or is it just inhale and exhale on such high speeds?
John Coltrane? No. No. No. Orenet Coleman (Sci fy 1970ish). NY'ers just don't know all their jazz. And why would they? Coleman grew up in Ft Worth Texas.

Makes actual fire shoot out of the harmonica.
"Ok... That was kinda fun"

When Howard says "I've never ever played anything this fast in my life" it translates to: you will never ever be able to play this in your life.

Fast jazz standards played in a bluegrass style is definitely a genre I see myself getting into
Most wonderful - this is great fun - thank you
...had to check my YT's speed settings - but it says 1x 🤷🏼♂️
Extraordinary as usual. I’m glad you’re including country & bluegrass.
More to come!

I love your jazz phrasing and your "muted trumpet" like sound. What's your favorite harp key for fast playng? Thanks for all, Mr. Levy.
I would say it depends on the tune, but in general, anything between A and D. And thanks for watching!
@@HowardLevyland Is a great pleasour. Absolutly impressed. Thank you very much.
I wish you'd do a thing with a tremolo harp and show what can be done with it.
Aha! Well, I play that on recordings for tone color at times- not really my thing (no bending).
@@HowardLevyland Oh well. Hope springs eternal.
Waow
Howard, you can get a speeding ticket for playing that fast. 🤓

What a kick! Why not 680?!
