As an Indonesian, huge respect to DW for making this documentary. Indonesian, while being diverse also being really hard to go through these kind of relationship in term of love. Thank you for being a voice to voiceless people!
Indonesian here. Before my husband and I got married, I was legally registered as a Christian and he was a Catholic. The process of us getting married and notarized officially was a long haul. His belief was still Catholic even when he decided to "convert" as a Christian to make everything simpler. There are only 6 limited religions in Indonesia. Yet ironically, every couple who wishes to get married HAS to only believe in one.
That is interesting to me, because as someone who is living in Alaska, there is not always the understanding of the division between Catholicism and Christianity, even if it is just simply Catholic veres Prodestants. Your statement implies that Catholicism still retains an identity spereate from the denominations that split from Catholicism to the obvious result that to be Catholic is not Christian and vice versa when in the United States, that is not always true though some people act as if it is so.
@@sunkissedprincessexactly, each religion is being categorized individually no matter the closeness between those within '6 officially recognized religions'.
The population in Sweden generally do not get married and do not belong to any religion yet they are probably one of the happiest people on the planet Paradise seems too often that religion divides people
Indonesian here. Not trying to make it Olympic of suffering, but in my opinion, same-sex couples face the biggest hurdles of all. As long as the republic stands, I don't think they will ever be accepted or recognized due to very strong religion stance and the resulting societal norms. Couples who are of different religion and ethnicity already have partial solutions as the video shows, not perfect, but at least it's there. So it's still possible for them to get married althought it's hard. One thing though, I wish DW showed an interfaith couple where the wife is a Muslim. That would've been very interesting to see. Islam forbids Muslim women to marry non-Muslim men whereas Muslim men are given the lenience to marry non-Muslim women. Maybe DW couldn't find such couple?
@@Dita_Utomo it already happen in aceh about 3 years a go,,it went viral because the families from wife side protest it and accused the husband for christianisation and the children from these couples abducted by family side of the wife, bring them to aceh because they insists the marriage was illegal and no acehnese became christians and the action supported by local government in aceh,,if i'm not mistaken it was made cover up story by BBC Indonesia but taken down by protest from local government in aceh,,😂😂
Homosexuality is not going to be legalized in Indonesia. Indonesia government had a very close relationship with the Muslim Ulema and the Christian Priest. The Muslim and Christian group always have their man in the government.
to say truth, it is a brave documentary remembering that it's Indonesia, there are two major issues talked here ^^ ,religion and homosexuality. salute!
All 3 couples radiate true love for each other..and that is what really matters.. I speak from own experience..my dad came from Turkey in 1950s and fell in love with my German mother..at that time it was not common st all in Germany and their families and society were againt it..but they got married in Turkey also 4 yrs later also had their ceremony in the church.. and guess what? They were married 59 yrs together till my mother passed away..religion was and is never a problem, as long as you accept and respect the other person..I am now 60 yrs and know: true love is a real blessing from god- gives you strength to overcome all the obstacles in life..and that is what really counts in life.. Yeah. That's unfortunate. We have the burden of history; religiosity is deeply engrained in culture and politics in Indonesia. There is no escape from religion, either in education, social life, even work places.

Actually DW, marriage between muslim men and nonmuslim women are common and even allowed (if not encouraged) in Islam. However, it's whole different matter if it's a nonmuslim man marrying muslim woman. In some countries like Pakistan, it even faced with death threat. This is the real problem.

The extreme difference in their beliefs (she knows all about her husband's opinions about Mohammed, etc.) hasn't impacted her love for him. Thank you for this documentary, DW. Life is short, and if you’re fortunate enough to find someone who loves you as much as you love them, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be together. Something as wonderful as love, which can greatly improve your life and well-being, shouldn’t be hindered by trivial obstacles like ethnicity, religion, or sexuality, as long as both people are consenting adults. These three couples are lucky to live in urban areas where people are generally more accepting, but not everyone in Indonesia has that privilege. Our so-called "recognized religions" are foreign faiths that replaced our ancestral beliefs, often due to colonization or because a monarch converted and then forced his entire kingdom to follow. We shouldn’t let outdated beliefs dictate who people can love, especially when we have more pressing issues to address, like combating rape and pedophilia. And while celebrating different ethnic groups is important, it’s also worth remembering that scientifically, we are all just one human race. Indonesia has so much potential, but it’s being held back by outdated mentalities. As a nation, we still have a long way to go because many of us cling to beliefs that are neither significant nor grounded in science. I hope we can move forward and develop not just economically but also in our mindset. Cheers to the happy couples-live your lives and surround yourselves with positive people. Semoga kalian berbahagia dan rukun selalu dalam kasih sayang ❤️🇮🇩

However, same religion marriage is still a top priorities, so often times you'll see interfaith marriage is still be frowned upon, regardless of gender, even by fellow Indonesian themselves. My sister-in-law is a Catholic and her husband is Muslim. They were allowed to marry in Catholic church yet only receive a blessing (if I'm not mistaken) but not a Sacrament. The Catholic church permitted this and the couple agreed. They can practice their own religions until now. Btw, inter-religious marriage bsck in the day was allowed. My father was a Muslim (though more agnostic) and my mother was a Catholic. They got married in the 70's. My grandfather was a Muslim and my grandmother was a Christian. I understand it's a big challenge now. I hope a solution can be given by the government again and the relevant religious authorities.🙏
You should talk about the root of the law first. Interfaith marriage was prohibited by the Dutch long time ago to prevent interracial marriage between the christian Dutch and local muslim women, because interracial families would ruin the Apartheid system in the Dutch East Indies. So, the Dutch colonists mostly had sexual relationship with their enslaved Concubines (De njai slavernij). The Njai slavery ended in 1950 after Indonesia got full sovereignty from Queen Juliana of the Netherlands( Probably, the longest slavery practiced by Europeans). However, the colonial laws have remained until today. It sounds weird, in Egypt a muslim man can marry a christian woman, but in Indonesia it can't be recognized by the laws. Indonesia, in general, does not adopt sharia laws.
@@LalalandDream27368 No, after the Independence wars of Latin America, the European powers created an international law that sovereignty only could be given by the parent countries (it means the Independence should be recognized by the authority of the parent countries first). That is way Sukarno needed Japan's agreement to recognize the sovereignty of Indonesia and even allied with Japanese. However, the Japanese did not do it and surrendered to the British and the British gave the authority back to the Dutch . You should remember that RMS and OPM already declared Independence, but Queen Juliana rejected their Independence. The same case with the Palestinian conflict. The British recognized Israeli sovereignty but did not recognize sovereignty of Palestine. The same cases with Taiwan, Transnistria, Abkhazia, Somaliland and North Cyprus.

In Islamic law, it’s permissible for a Muslim man to marry a woman who is a Monotheist (such as Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian). The Muslim husband is also required under Islamic law if his wife is Jewish to take her to synagogue and encourage her to be a good Jew, if she is Christian (of any denomination) to take her to church and encourage her to be a good Christian, if she is Zoroastrian to take her to services and follow the teachings well. There’s a difference between what is actually Islamic law versus imperfect people who call themselves Muslims but perhaps are not well studied in Islamic law resisting for their son / brother to marry a woman who is non-Muslim but also a believer in One God. Perhaps culturally it is discouraged in Indonesia, but religiously as far as Islamic law is concerned, it is perfectly acceptable for a Muslim man to marry a Jewish, Christian, Zoroastrian, or other Monotheistic woman, and the woman cannot be pressured to convert to Islam. In Qur’an 2:256 Allah (God) says “There is no compulsion in religion.” Islamic law also allows and does not in any way discourage people of different ethnic groups to marry. In fact, from among Islamic teachings is the final sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when he said “All humanity is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a White has no superiority over a Black nor does a Black have superiority over White; except by Taqwa (God-consciousness and piety) and good action.” So again, if people who call themselves Muslim are resisting for their family members to marry someone or a different tribe / ethnicity / race / color, it is from culture that they are acting, not from Islam. It is contrary to Islamic teachings to oppose a family member marrying someone of a different ethnicity simply because they are a different ethnicity.
When 2 person want to get married, it is actually very simple please. This process becomes complicated when families are involved. Everyone then has their own ideas whatever it maybe. Religion, beliefs, age differences, everything under the sun. To make this process EVEN more complicated is the marriage law of Indonesia. Under this law , it is not easy to marry someone of different faith.

Did you know the first non African people to inhabit Madagascar were ancient Indonesians? The archipelago is the bridge between Asia and Oceania and the Pacific and Indian oceans. It has been a melting pot of races and cultures for millennia. In fact, the first Australians migrated from Africa to Australia through Indonesia. The Arab merchants were there long before Arabia embraced Islam and so were the Indians and Chinese. The Portuguese then arrived in 15th-16th century with the Spaniards who then colonised the Philippines. The Dutch and the British then turfed out the Portuguese and confined them to eastern part of Indonesia.

Worshipping money and power is the universal religion now. So long as one doesn't push his belief and ideology onto others, we can all live with grace and respect. Religion may do good to one's moral disciplining, while it cannot control us.
The problem with marriage certificate is not just piece of paper... it is legal document which binds personal finance of two counterparties together... such as asset, liabilities, mortgages, and should there be any domestic violence ... that piece of paper matters (at least in Indonesia). We have different legal paths for domestic violence here in Indonesia. There is also thing such as alimony or inheritance which often requires that piece of certificate. Of course, if you only care for loves, no marriage is needed, no legal standing is required 😂😂. But then again, we dont really live in empty void, do we??
Our country is too diverse. And marriage is serious business for everyone. Nobody wants a second marriage after all, it’s not like buying a car. So i understand the parent’s concern when it comes to inter-faith/tribe marriage. They want the marriage to be stable so they seek those who are similar to one another. I am also in the same situation as i marry out of my tribe. Dialogue is the key in this kind of situation.
If you think indonesia is bad, Malaysia is thousand times worst, you must convert if you marriage partner is muslim, and after convert, you cannot change the status of muslim forever, and they will hury you in the muslim manner, ther are a lot of cases where children are converted without their consent, or force to convert because one of the parents decides to marry a muslim, subsequently the chidlren gets converted automatically, its a one way street in malaysia if u wanna marry a muslim Indonesia is a lot more tolerant if u ask me
What about Aceh?. Part of the territory of Indonesia. The whole world knows what happened there. A place where those who are guilty of violating Islamic rules are whipped in front of everyone, whether they are Muslims or vice versa
Happiness isn't always reached by human's desire. If people take it that way, it's not an option. Indonesia is not try to persecute those but just try to keep human's nature.

When you marry someone means you marry your spouse's family. Your spouse's parents become your parents (in law) too, and vice versa. Therefore races and religions are keys to a marriage with impacts to your next of kin. Meanwhile LGBT marriage are probihuted by our Indonesian laws since it is againts the teaching of 6 legal religions admitted by country laws.

Such a complicated setting to start the life journey per couple. We havent even gone into odds like 3 in a relationship etc! Marriage is ought to be treated very seriously. Especially the expected task to raise the next generation meaningful, useful to the society. It is damn sacred. Now, what happens to the reverse process i.e. divorce? Will it be as troublesome as how the starting is?
As an Indonesian, huge respect to DW for making this documentary. Indonesian, while being diverse also being really hard to go through these kind of relationship in term of love. Thank you for being a voice to voiceless people!
Indonesian here. Before my husband and I got married, I was legally registered as a Christian and he was a Catholic. The process of us getting married and notarized officially was a long haul. His belief was still Catholic even when he decided to "convert" as a Christian to make everything simpler. There are only 6 limited religions in Indonesia. Yet ironically, every couple who wishes to get married HAS to only believe in one.
catholic IS Christian!

Indonesian here. Not trying to make it Olympic of suffering, but in my opinion, same-sex couples face the biggest hurdles of all. As long as the republic stands, I don't think they will ever be accepted or recognized due to very strong religion stance and the resulting societal norms. So it's still possible for them to get married althought it's hard.

So it's all Muslim man and Christian woman and not the other way around
Indonesia never gets full Sovereignity from any state. Our forefathers declared our independence during the vacuum of power here.

In Qur’an 2:256 Allah (God) says “There is no compulsion in religion.”
Islamic law also allows and does not in any way discourage people of different ethnic groups to marry. In fact, from among Islamic teachings is the final sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when he said “All humanity is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a White has no superiority over a Black nor does a Black have superiority over White; except by Taqwa (God-consciousness and piety) and good action.”
So again, if people who call themselves Muslim are resisting for their family members to marry someone or a different tribe / ethnicity / race / color, it is from culture that they are acting, not from Islam.

I have a mixed marriage, I am a Muslim and my wife is a Polish Christian. We are fine. A lot of my cousins have mixed marriages, even the Mom of Indonesian President is a catholic even if he's a Muslim.
Yes if your sister marries a Christian man it's a problem. We see this hypocrisy
@baloo212 My sister married a Catholic Man but he converted to Muslim and got married under a Muslim Ceremony just for the sake of formality which is normal in Indonesia. You call them Islam KTP (or by registration only, without following the religion). I have got a cousin, who's a nephew of a prominent cabinet minister both under Jokowi and Prabowo's Government who got married both in Catholic and Muslim Ceremonies. After they got married, they just follow each of their own religion and let the kid choose. No issue at all.
There is nothing wrong with these types of relationships. I mean, polygamous relationships are also considered "forbidden" but accepted by many people in Indonesia. I believe Indonesians will start accepting and be more tolerant towards these forms of relationships as time goes by.
Interfaith and gay marriage is a totally different thing. Don't make it look like they are similar problem.
Ethnic Batak still have local religion called 'parmalin' with it local temple called 'Bale Pasogit", but minority because many converted to Protestant Christian by Dutch, they do not beocme muslim, same with dayak in Borneo, they dont want become muslim remain local religion, or religion with hindu element, like hindu kaharagan, and local temple or place of worship called 'balai basarah', they also have 'spirit house called 'sandung' and live in 'longhouse called 'rumah lamin and rumah bentang', most of them bcome Christian. in Indonesia mixed ethnic, reliigon and same gender are common but many do not accept it.
Love speaks louder💔
When I visited Bali for three months to do affordable dental work, I came to appreciate the rich, beautiful, embracing culture in the mostly Hindu island. As a gay man I was also treated without obvious prejudice but it was also clear that there are no gay bars, dance clubs, nor do you see two men holding hands on the street. Homosexuality is not legal in Indonesia which is becoming more conservative, as the largest Muslim nation in the world. Unfortunate.
Yeah in general gays are not widely accepted in Indonesia, only few areas or people do, Indonesians in general are religious or conservatives therefore mostly only support "traditional family" (man and woman couple) and gays generally are misjudged, stereotyped, bullied, etc, and it worsened that the medias only showed gays when there any gays made trouble like r*e, ignoring their child d1eD in the car, etc.

As a believing Muslim I could never marry a non-Muslim. Which means we prioritise the well-being of our afterlives. However, if one does not care about religion and only sees it as a cultural thing then I understand why one would marry outside their faith because they will live a life accordingly so religion won’t cause arguments.
Religion is just a bullshit thing that humans have ever made in this world 😂

@@ardi08 same gender and also the commonness with which people of different races/religions marry each other but it's not as big of a deal in the US because there's a longer history of mixing
@MartianInDisguise Longer history of mixing? Indonesia may be a younger nation/state compared to the USA but the history of humanity and civilisations - and racial/ethnic mixing - have been in existence in the archipelago for at least ten thousands of years. Did you know the world’s oldest cave painting is in Indonesia (50,000 + years)? Did you know that two of the world’s biggest maritime empires whose influence spread throughout Southeast Asia were based in the archipelago (Srivijaya and Majapahit)? Did you know the first foreign people to “discover” Australia were the Macassan sailors/traders of the island of Sulawesi?
