  • During the beginning of 2020 season, my Rachio sprinkler controller was acting up. I would run my sprinklers and zoned wouldn’t run. Some sprinkler soz ones would run, and others would not run. I needed to figure out how to fix my Rachio 2. I reached out to Rachio, and they were slow to respond and never diagnosed by Rachio during a 7 week drawn out conversation. I never changed my Rachio 2 out for my Rachio 3 last year. I just put up with poor running sprinkler controller useing hydretain. Crazy thing is, since this year; it has ran fine. I haven’t noticed any issues. I feel it was a glitch in the updates. What ever updated happened over winter, I feel fixed it. I have really enjoyed the WiFi sprinkler controller, it has been super solid. This is an unboxing and setup of the Rachio 3.

    I have the original Rachio and it works great but I never trust their rain skips. In Florida it will rain in your backyard and not your front yard but Rachio doesn't know that. as long as I am in control of what runs and what doesn't it does really well. I do have the itch to upgrade though.

      I don’t use them. Living in Utah, it’s a major event to get rain, so I’m notified and I make adjustments according to what we get (similar to you lol).
      I already notice a much quicker response for the 3rd gen vs my original. I like it cause I do adjustments on the fly and this cuts my times of waiting for the sprinklers (time is precious and so is water it it’s running when not needed). As far as controller is concerned, my gma’s unit (gen 2) and mine (gen 3) have the same interface and functions I use. Never had the first one, so don’t know if there is much. At this point, I’d never of switched just for the run time 🤷‍♂️… I struggle to find any advantages to base model vs base 2nd gen.
      Do you have set run times in Florida, with your wet season, or do you just supplement?

    I've got the gen 2, and I have to say the design improvements they made on the actual controller (use your finger to release the wires, magnetic cover attachment, etc) are really nice enhancements.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 роки тому

      They really are some nice enhancements for sure. Things that are not really utilized a lot, but nice to have when you have to use it right?

    I started with gen 1 rachio and it worked perfectly for years. Then it stopped working. I called rachio and they told me there was nothing they could do. After a few more days of troubleshooting I determined that it was actually a common wire issue and I was able to get it running. A few days later Rachio contacted me about my original problem and told me they had sent me a gen 3 replacement. Excellent support :) Really happy with my gen 3. I find the rain skip is generally a good thing, but there are times i override it.

      I mean… Hey Rachio….. ☝🏻
      That is really good to hear. I went back and looked at the conversations again, it was seriously late April 2020- June 2020 of emails and so I can’t really trust the experience I got. This is what I like to hear, and they seem like a quality company generally. I really appreciate the feedback, like I said, I am holding it with a grain of salt, my experience due to timing.
      Lol with people’s weather stations taken into account, some of the readings are funky from time to time. I have the rain skip tuned off and I pay attention ( I live in Utah, so we don’t get much and I know if we do lol).

      Normally is a solid unit. I hope that whatever this issue was was isolated and it seems like it’s fixed itself over at my grandmas house.

    I installed the Rachio 3 about a week ago. Install was super easy. I'm not liking the daily flex schedule though, as it wants to run the sprinklers every day. Not good for my cool season lawn. I'm going with the fixed schedule for now so I can control the days that watering takes place. Need to do some more studying on the details and variables that go into the advanced zone settings. Great job of taking care of grandma's place!!

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 роки тому +1

      Somthing is prob off in the root depth/ allowed deletion / available water….. one of these settings are triggering it (most likely the allowed depletion, but any can affect it).
      There are too many variable for most homeowners to understand with the flex, it’s intense. I get it now, after working on it for a while, but it’s basically a pro setting (IMO).
      Cup test and set a fixed schedule to it, that is the easiest for sure, and most accurate. Take it one step further, watch your lawn look for signs of stress then manually run it, this wi give the best time to stress ratio.

    • @jwstein19
      @jwstein19 3 роки тому

      Yes, so many variables. Maybe it can be solved with calculus - teach us oh great one! I've done the cup test and am using that to set my watering times for now. In the meantime I'll wait for your lessons on the advanced settings. 🤓

      I killed it, and Resuscitated it three times. Nothing helped. I honestly think that I just hit them right in the middle of the Covid shut down, because I was at home, and I feel like they were too. Would be cool to reach out and see what they were like now though, but I don’t need to because I don’t have any issues currently.

    Hi Jeremy, great irrigation system. Quick question please. I noticed at 7:44 you displayed your time zone adjustments in order to get your 1-inch of water per week. Just curious, do those times represent a single dose per week or are you watering approximately an hour each zone 2 or more times in a week? Thank you 🙏🏼

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 роки тому

      Hey Gary, to find out how much you need, I actually made this video to get accurate times for people (this is the most accurate method, a “time” with no tests, isn’t accurate) : ua-cam.com/video/JcUYS5LG4p8/v-deo.html
      It is the one I’m teaching people how to find out how much water you need.
      “These times were for video purposes, and not to be used as a reference”.

    Great video. I just installed a wifi Rain Bird and not happy with it so far. Can you still connect to it through the app if you are on you home wifi and your wifi loses internet connection?

    • @lawn2learn
      @lawn2learn 3 роки тому +1

      @M no you need internet to use this device.
      Even if you are on your local WiFi.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 роки тому

      No, it doesn’t have a Bluetooth option. Although it does find it to set up. I might play with it and get back to you.
      If you are home, you can manually run it as well tho. As long as it has power, it will run its schedule that has been previously programmed as well.

    • @515Mike
      @515Mike 3 роки тому +2

      @@TheGreenerLawn Right. I know you can manually water zones at the controller, but with that scenario can you turn On/Off schedules at the controller with no wifi? Knowing your phone can't connect?

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 роки тому

      Ok, first question, why wouldn’t your WiFi be connected?
      Second question ☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻
      😂
      Do you have poor WiFi connection?
      Answer is, it isn’t a Bluetooth enabled controller, it’s just WiFi. It will run what ever schedules it has enabled if WiFi connection is down, but changes can’t be made until it’s reconnected.
