Lawn is looking great! I love Clematis too! I have a Gen1 Rachio and I have no idea how I could live without it. But that's because I use my irrigation system like it's the water fountain show at the Bellagio. At sunset, I smoke a cigar and turn them on and off during - all from the comfort of my smart phone.
Great video. Word to the wise- if you’re installing this system with a iPhone 11 it won’t work. Rather, you’ll have to set it up with an older device or a laptop on the same WiFi network. Spent an hour troubleshooting mine tonight and once I switched to an older device it worked just as easily as in this video.
Would love to have one of these. Current timer is not Wifi. It's like 1895 at my house. I need to step in to the future. Enjoying the channel. Subbed just last week.
I’ll tell you I got the 2nd gen. It’s worth it. The fact that it can delay your sprinkler when it’s too windy and weather intelligence is great. And the install is super easy. Just match the wires.
So...just started my research on the Rachio and other smart sprinkler controllers. I have yet to pull the trigger on one, but watching your videos and reviews on the Racho, I think i'm SOLD!! We are currently transitioning from a rental home to a house we just purchased. At first look, the sprinkler controller I have now, is too complicated for me! I'm a simple man and I love my technology. Having a Rachio would save me so much headache and time, you wouldn't believe. Hope this comment finds you and I am the lucky one to be able to receive such an awesome device. Keep on making these awesome videos....subscribed AND clicked the bell icon.
My husband is in the process of installing a system but he purchased a simple/regular programmer ( not smart) and of course we would not qualify to be on your list of possible winners since we moved to the Azores but love your well explained review of this system.
Was doing my research for an upgrade unit. Very glad I came across this video because the 3 seems like the way to go. I will wait for contest results. Thanks for detailed video.
I am doing my own spriinkler system installation. Here in Houston by late May all of our plants start wiilting. Sure can use the Rachio Gen 3! Awesome explanation! I’m hooked!
I use the Rachio 2 and live in the AZ desert. Water is a precious commodity and a smart watering system is a must. This summer we have already had more than 100 days of over 100 degrees. I would love to try the Rachio 3 with enhanced weather and flow meter. Our local utility provides a rebate for using a smart watering system.
I was an early remote control adopter and bought an Irrigation Caddy a couple years ago and the Rachio is by far a major improvement. I would love to swap mine out for a Rachio and promote it with all of my friends! I'm in IT and love Smart Home tech but I'm on the fence about it but will definitely buy one for my mother.
I’m also in IT and all in with smart home technology too. The Rachio makes a complicated job very simple. Set it and forget it. Flow meter video coming soon!
Great job. I have been watching UA-cam for over a year now and you're the FIRST channel I have subscribed to. Most reviewers talk too slow and repeat themselves, but you do a good job. Thanks.
I really need the Rachio because at 75, I still do yard work and this would greatly help me have a beautiful yard in the neighborhood. Enjoy your help films.
Great video! I learned about your channel through The Lawn Care Nut. The two of you make these tasks simplified which, in turn, makes newbies like myself dominate the neighborhood. My neighbors always stop me in the yard while working and ask me my secret. I send them straight to your channels each time. Keep up the great work and thank you so much for the informative help. This would be a great addition to my program I have implemented on my property. I wanted to take a shot at the big prize! Thank you for the opportunity in doing so!
That is a good looking lawn. The smart irrigation control that takes into account actual rain is so smart. In Florida this would be great to take account for our heavy rain in the summer and dry winter
Love that Rachio had upped their integration to make their already great system even better! Even if I don't win, I definitely will be looking at buying one for my house here in Texas! Great video going through the product!
Had a renter in the house that disconnected our sprinkler panel leaving our system unusable. Now back in the house and looking for a control panel and was very impressed with the Rachio 3 you demonstrated. Would love to use one to get our system back up and running!
Great video ! Gave me the confidence to swap out my RainBird so my wife quits complaining that the sprinkler system is on in the rain..... Looks like a great application of technology.
Wow, I'm really happy I viewed your video. I had an underground break in my sprinkler system in my back yard and had to have that fixed. During that repair I discovered I could also relieve myself of having 2 different controllers and systems (1 in the front yard the other in the back - I'm the NOT the original house owner!). So, now that that is behind me I want to move on to a SMART watering system and the RACHIO seems to have everything I could dream of. I'm also seriously considering getting the waterflow meter as well. Thanks for the video and insight!
Thank you for the review! Could only find a simple comparison between the two products. It was great to see the entire setup process for those of us lucky enough to have a controller from 89.
Moved from Michigan to NC and the previous owners didn't use the irrigation system in over 15 years. I was able to get it up and running but with a combination of clay, south facing lawn, and steep slope, I have been very challenged with the appropriate amount of water. Not to mention, we get punished for using too much water. Our water bill easily hits $200/month when watering. I would love to see how much this type of system can actually reduce my bill.
This is Great Information! Have an old hunter and am very interested to update my control for my lawn care. Glad I waited for this new version. Can't wait to see how the flow meter works out!
Hey HandyDad, First thing first your inputs and comparison of two awesome Rachio generation are really helpful. Also, it helped me because I am from New Jersey near Freehold so pretty much same weather we share. Please keep doing this kind of knowledgeable video which helps people out there. Really appreciate your views about the product and how it is helping everyone. Simply perfect.
My old “dumb” irrigation controller’s LCD panel died this spring, so I hopped on UA-cam for a some extensive research on smart controller options. Your review was the most fun to watch. I loved the random clips spliced in. The clips were funny and seldom used so as not to detract from the purpose of the review. I also liked that you left the moments with the bird (beginning) and yellowjacket (mid); again fun and real.
loved the video, very much interested in the rachio. My springler setup is in the basement and I have to go up and down the stairs to control it. Being a proud 64 yr old female, one of these will be helpful. You made it very easy to setup. Thanks
You are such a wonderful teacher. I had first watched your video on installing the Rachio flow meter; then this one on the Rachio 3! You made the installation of my new Rachio 3 so easy. I will love to watch more videos from you. You are the best!!
Doing a full glyphosate kill of my lawn in the fall and want to update my Rainbird 12-LX plus. Thanks for the video, nice to see some of the feature and navigation first hand.
I saw the Rachio for sale at Costco and started researching the product. I have an old rain bird in the garage and I have to run around 9 time (9 zones) to see if they are all working. Good work out but drives me crazy. Love the Phone app. It's on my wish list. Video review was great and very informative and answered a whole lot of questions about the product.
Thanks for the overview! I've been interested in the Rachio for over two years, I really want to be able to turn on zones remotely as I'm doing sprinkler head work! Maybe now with Gen 3 I'll spring for it.
Great video. I have been looking for a smart sprinkler controller for a few years now, and I think you have me sold on the Rachio v3! Thanks for all the great videos!
Dude… I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your video… I’ve used Rachio for years… And I’ve been trying to get more friends of mine to get one too… Maybe I can share this with them to get them to see the LIGHT……. Plus if I win…. I’ll give to them and install the Gen 2 that I now have… A win win… thanks in advance!
Great review... Like how you point out the improvements between the 2nd and 3rd generations which really make a difference in the decision making process.
Love the video! Recently moved to a home with an irrigation system in much need of repair. Will seriously consider the Rachel 3 as part of the overhaul.
Great video. Couldn't decide between the Gen 2 or Gen 3. You explained it well and the deciding feature is the weather feature in the Gen3 narrowing the monitoring to within 36' of the unit. We're in Myrtle Beach, SC and weather reports constantly forecast rain. It will rain over the shore & all around us but not where we are. Water bills are the only cost we've found expensive since moving here 2 years ago. They charge for usage and more for waste water. Since they can't determine irrigation doesn't return to the sewers we get charged for the full usage both ways. Water bills have exceeded $300/month. The Rachio 3 will pay for itself in less than a year! Thanks.
Thank you so much for reviewing the Rachio 3 and explaining the differences between the two. I am new to landscaping and your channel has really helped me out with a bunch of projects. I hope your channel continues to grow. I will definitely spread the word regarding your channel and I hope to be the lucky winner of the Rachio 3! I also look forward to your upcoming videos!
After watching your videos I’m not sure that I qualify as a great mind. More like a great mind and a guy sitting on his toilet watching UA-cam think alike.
I had almost pulled the trigger on Gen 2 a month and a half ago before I learnt Gen 3 was coming. Going to buy it anyway but would be nice to win it :D
I think you do really good job explaining the concept and the item. I think I would love the magnetic cover great I have Arthritis in both hands so that would make it easy to access and do what has to be done. Many products don’t consider older people have troubles that this seems to cover
Great video and enjoyed the laymen explanation and comparison between versions. Almost got the V2 before I saw the new one coming out and waiting to get that one. Looking forward to the flow meter review as well as checking out your other videos.
Very informative video. My question is at the end of the season, when its time to winterize what's the procedure with Rachio. Do you keep it online or does it have a on/off mode, after you have the lines blown out. I live in Michigan.
just wanted to say after seeing your video i bought my rachio 3 with flow meter and they're hooked up and ready to water, just need to make my last connections :) Thanks for your time on making this videos!!
Thanks for the review! I have a company that preps the system for winter. Does this controller allow for them to tap into the system and control the zones for an easy winter blow out?
Excellent video! I'm new to the lawn game so I'm trying to play catch up with all the new tips and tricks! Would love to add this Rachio to my toolbelt!
Great video. I've been thinking about a smart watering system for my lawn, and you have sold me on the overall benefits. I will wait to see if I am the lucky winner before I rush out and buy one. Keep putting out the videos!!!
Ooo I like the features in the Gen 3 Smart Controller! Thanks for putting out this video. The Gen 3 seems like a series of elegantly refined improvements over the 2.
Great video, recently purchased a NetAtmo weather system and set it up as a personal weather station in hopes of getting a Rachio to integrate with it soon!
Nice video. I bought the 3 a few months back because my series 2 was being temperamental about my new router. but did not install until today. I thought it would take the same energy as my install of the Series 2. It took 15 to 20 minutes. I remembered your video because of the great tip not to delete the Series 2 until after the data transfer. The irrigation settings and wifi join up happened automatically. Sweet. I agree that the 3 is a significant improvement in performance and ease of install.
Great video! Very informative. Lawn looks awesome. I have the Rachio 2 and found this video better than the others I’ve seen. Funniest parts were Al Roker and the bee!
This was a great video. Kinda curios on how well it performs after having this for a year. I really want to get one but would really like to hear from a user how good it is at determining when to skip a watering cycle when rain is coming after your watering date/time
I have mine set on Flexible Daily Schedule to complete before 6am. It does everything else. Knows when to water, how much, and when not to. Set it and forget it.
Hello, thank you for the video. I have a question. During the 4 seasons a year the water authority sets which days I can water. Can I set the dates and cycles all at once?
Yes, you can set up multiple schedules with different start and end dates. So you can have one that waters on even days in June, but only Sundays in July.
Thanks for the great review Handydad. I am in the market for a little more control over my lawn. I love that you have used Gen2 & Gen3. Looking forward to hearing about the Flow Meter.
This video was great! I am from Houston Texas and my sprinkler system stopped working after Harvey. I have been saving up to get one of these to replace my old timer one.
Thank you so much for these videos!! I've watched your previous video on the Version 2 and knew I had to get one of these, unfortunately for me, I haven't yet but would absolutely love a shot at winning this version 3! This is the type of home automation that's seriously done right!!
Amazing lawn! I also am now considering the rotary sprinkler heads. Love this new Gen 3! Keep up these videos.. they extremely useful! Shout out from Dallas, Tx.
LOVE LOVE LOVE my Rachio! I’ve been recommending it to all my neighbors on Nextdoor ever since I installed it. I’ve been contemplating upgrading to the Gen 3 and whether it was worth the cost, so thanks for the review on it. Sounds like one of the major advantages is if you get the flow meter along with it, so I’ll be looking for your review on that as well!
Good and very informative video. I am researching smart controllers for my sprinklers and found your review. I am now decided to get the Rachio 3. I do want to say that you have good on-camera skills, but want to laud your outstanding video production skills.
Also, I love Al Roker too. I really do.
Must be the name. 😉
But does Al Roker love Allyn Hane??
Throw'Er Down!
Great video. Word to the wise- if you’re installing this system with a iPhone 11 it won’t work. Rather, you’ll have to set it up with an older device or a laptop on the same WiFi network. Thank you Andy, question, if i set up on iPhone 10 and log in later on an iPhone 11 do you know if it will work?
@@chrisdavidson2294 Why you want a system that has manual controls if needed?
Would love to have one of these. Current timer is not Wifi. It's like 1895 at my house. I need to step in to the future. Enjoying the channel. Subbed just last week.
Good luck!

Amazing video...sold me on the Rachio 3!! Seems like a smart way to go!
Thanks. I’m still using mine.

My husband is in the process of installing a system but he purchased a simple/regular programmer ( not smart) and of course we would not qualify to be on your list of possible winners since we moved to the Azores but love your well explained review of this system.
I have a semi-smart controller (can control from a web browser, no weather data), but would absolutely love an upgrade. You've sold me on the Rachio.
Great video!! 1st time viewer and new subscriber. Looking forward to seeing more reviews!! Thanks!
Was doing my research for an upgrade unit. Very glad I came across this video because the 3 seems like the way to go. I will wait for contest results. Thanks for detailed video.

I purchased a gen 2 a year ago and love it. Hope to get gen 3 because of the cover and weather data precision. Great Video!!
Love the video but more importantly, love the product. I'm over 75 and would love this product to keep my lawn beautiful.
Great job. I have been watching UA-cam for over a year now and you're the FIRST channel I have subscribed to. Most reviewers talk too slow and repeat themselves, but you do a good job. Thanks.
Wow thanks! I really appreciate that feedback.
Just purchased Gen 2 and need to buy 2 more. I will probably get Gen 3 based on your video. Great job highlighting the differences.

I just installed my GEN 2 and really like it. Hard to imagine improvements.
This is the coolest thing i've ever seen! I'm a HUGE grass nut, something like this would be a game changer for my lawn!
Love that Rachio had upped their integration to make their already great system even better! Even if I don't win, I definitely will be looking at buying one for my house here in Texas! Great video going through the product!
First time reviewing your channel and am very pleased to learn about the Rachio that I am considering buying.

The contest ended, but they are now available on Amazon at handydad.tv/y0e6
Great video ! Gave me the confidence to swap out my RainBird so my wife quits complaining that the sprinkler system is on in the rain..... Looks like a great application of technology.
This will be my first WiFi sprinkler system control. I am very curious how much water is getting on my lawn. Thanks for the video.
Wanting to add this for my lawn. Just like you, I’ve followed the Lawn Care Nut and trying to make my lawn look great.
Wow, I'm really happy I viewed your video. I had an underground break in my sprinkler system in my back yard and had to have that fixed. Yeah a smart controller will be a big help. Set it and forget it. But if you need to tweak it, just take out your phone.
Great information, I have the 2nd generation and really appreciate the simplicity of keeping my lawn properly irrigated.
Good work..... make sure to let us know what the saturation feature is..... thanks....
You are such a wonderful teacher. I had first watched your video on installing the Rachio flow meter; then this one on the Rachio 3! You made the installation of my new Rachio 3 so easy. I will love to watch more videos from you. You are the best!!
Wow thanks so much. 😊
I'm almost go with Gen 2. Glad to see your review on Gen 3. I do see a lot of improvements. Love to get a new one.
How do I know which type of sprinkler head I have; e.g., fixed spray and rotary look identical to me.
Fixed spray doesn't move; water comes out in a wide spray. Rotary heads have a stream that rotates left to right.
Just attended the SRP Water Expo in Phoenix and got mine! Thanks for the post. Can't wait to check it out! Super quality.
👍🏻💦💯
I have been wanting to get one of these because I am doing the Lawn Care Nut's plan as well for my yard. Good honest review!
I plan on putting in a new system this year and this controller would be a perfect fit.
Doing a full glyphosate kill of my lawn in the fall and want to update my Rainbird 12-LX plus. Thanks for the video, nice to see some of the feature and navigation first hand.
Can you set up multiple programs? For example, on my present timer I have a program for my lawns and a separate program for my flower beds.
Yes absolutely.
Any recommendations for "enclosure"... I need to put mine outside
You can get it on Amazon amzn.to/2XHzhyU
Great video. I wanted to get Rachio and wasn't sure how it worked or which one to get. This cleared up all the quesoitns.
I still use it!
@@handydadtv Bought it and installed it and it works great!
Looks great. I use a sprinkler service for winterization and startup. Is there a way for them to connect?
They wouldn’t need to. They don’t depend on your timer; they can open your zones manually at the valves (assuming they can access them).
Sorry to say, the contest is long over. But appreciate the kind words.
Thanks for the very informative report. You convinced me to purchase the Rachio unit to replace the defective Hunter unit I currently have.
Great review... Like how you point out the improvements between the 2nd and 3rd generations which really make a difference in the decision making process.
Currently have version 2. this looks like a worthwhile upgrade.
Love the video! Recently moved to a home with an irrigation system in much need of repair. Will seriously consider the Rachel 3 as part of the overhaul.

Spero arrivi presto anche in italia, non vedo l'ora di poterne avere uno a disposizione!!! Complimenti per il lavoro!
Looking to replace my old sprinkler controller and with this review I'll probably be looking at the Rachio 3 myself. Thanks!!
Thanks for the thorough review! Been looking at the Rachio for a while. Love the cutaways!
Thanks for great video. I was trying to decide whether to upgrade or not. Appears to have many great new features.
Just curious what you are planning to do with your version 2. That could be a nice runner up prize.
Great minds think alike. 😉
After watching your videos I’m not sure that I qualify as a great mind. More like a great mind and a guy sitting on his toilet watching UA-cam think alike.
Looks like a great tool for a great lawn. I look forward to making this purchase

Nice review. Love the new cover. Interested to see if the watering is any different with the updated weather info.
Very informative video. My question is at the end of the season, when its time to winterize what's the procedure with Rachio. Do you keep it online or does it have a on/off mode, after you have the lines blown out. I live in Michigan.
I just disable any active schedules. You can also unplug it if you want.
HandyDadTV Thanks keep up the great channel, also Happy Father's Day.
just wanted to say after seeing your video i bought my rachio 3 with flow meter and they're hooked up and ready to water, just need to make my last connections :) Thanks for your time on making this videos!!
Happy to hear! Thanks for the comment.
I was trying to decide between saving money on a 2nd gen and getting the 3rd gen. This video was exactly what I needed to help me decide. Thanks!
After our previous controller was destroyed in a house fire, this looks like the replacement. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the review! I have a company that preps the system for winter. Does this controller allow for them to tap into the system and control the zones for an easy winter blow out?
You can manually trigger zones from the controller. But you’ll need the owner’s login to control it via the app. I don’t think it allows guest access.
Excellent video! I'm new to the lawn game so I'm trying to play catch up with all the new tips and tricks! Would love to add this Rachio to my toolbelt!
Good luck!
Great video. I've been thinking about a smart watering system for my lawn, and you have sold me on the overall benefits. I will wait to see if I am the lucky winner before I rush out and buy one. Keep putting out the videos!!!
Thanks! Good luck!
Ooo I like the features in the Gen 3 Smart Controller! Thanks for putting out this video. The Gen 3 seems like a series of elegantly refined improvements over the 2.
Great video. .. I agree with you that" end by time" function is nice. Don't want to compete for water pressure
Great video, recently purchased a NetAtmo weather system and set it up as a personal weather station in hopes of getting a Rachio to integrate with it soon!
Great video. I am on well water. Does it have an delay options between zones?
I don’t know about a delay option, but I know it can work a relay that turns on a well pump.
HandyDadTV . Thank you! Looking forward to the next video.
Nice video. I bought the 3 a few months back because my series 2 was being temperamental about my new router. but did not install until today. The magnetic front is the best, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing your story!
@@handydadtv Indeed, and the new wire terminals. I found the old versions aggravatingly unfriendly. :)
This new version is awesome! I can't wait for the flow meter!
Great video! Very informative. Lawn looks awesome. I have the Rachio 2 and found this video better than the others I’ve seen. Funniest parts were Al Roker and the bee!
This seems like an awesome product. Good luck everyone!
I can definitely see this in helping me. Especially as a first time homeowner
You know you have a great looking lawn when Allyn comments on it. Great video sir!
Great video! I’m considering upgrading to my first Rachio and have been debating whether to save a few dollars by going with the gen 2.
that rachio would make life a whole lot simpler that's for sure. Great Vid
This video was great! I am from Houston Texas and my sprinkler system stopped working after Harvey. I have been saving up to get one of these to replace my old timer one.
V3 Racchio looks great. I'm going to start planning an installation for later this Summer.
Thank you so much for these videos!! I've watched your previous video on the Version 2 and knew I had to get one of these, unfortunately for me, I haven't yet but would absolutely love a shot at winning this version 3! This is the type of home automation that's seriously done right!!
Awesome job explaining how great the Gen 3 is. cant wait to get my hands on one.
Looking at supporting a local company, your review definitely makes me very comfortable to do so! Thanks.
Amazing lawn! I also am now considering the rotary sprinkler heads. Love this new Gen 3! Keep up these videos.. they extremely useful! Shout out from Dallas, Tx.
Hey Dallas! My daughter will be going to Baylor grad school in August.
Great information HandyDad! I have a Rachio 2 and thinking about now going to the 3
LOVE LOVE LOVE my Rachio!
Awesome! Just full disclosure, the contest doesn’t include a flow meter so you’d need to buy one if you win. Good luck!
HandyDadTV No worries! I would’ve watched and commented either way! Out of all my smart home devices, and I’ve got many, the Rachio is my favorite 😊
Good and very informative video. I am researching smart controllers for my sprinklers and found your review. I am now decided to get the Rachio 3.
I do want to say that you have good on-camera skills, but want to laud your outstanding video production skills.
Here is the Rachio 3 installed in my basement (it is a walkout) - photos.app.goo.gl/5ZruzGYmahxATPkE8
