- In this video, I replace the builder's RainBird sprinkler control with a Rachio Gen 3 smart irrigation controller that I brought with me from my old house. I also show how to install the Rachio Outdoor Enclosure.

Outstanding job cowboy. I ordered this controller yesterday, then cancelled my order, then called in to the store and requested to cancel my previous cancellation request, after watching this video. The outdoor cover with power adapter plugin option saved my order. I didn’t want to reroute the wires into my house because it’s a hassle I didn’t want to go through. The existing Hunter irrigation controller is still working and all the wiring is outside. I didn’t know that the outdoor cover actually has a power adapter plug in option. Now it makes sense.
Yes, it’s a beautiful thing!
Thanks dad!. lol and Go Baylor.... well, I am watching it after your 2 years of posting this video, as I moved to my new house and just fed up with Rain Bird but never got a chance wi to change it with Rachio until now, I just bought rachio3 for $99 which a good deal and will be installing this weekend as it is really cold here in Louisville, my RainBird is outdoor so I guess I have to buy outdoor fixture and then follow your guide which seems to be very helpful, only thing I am nervous if I will be able to setup with HomeKit so I can yell Siri to water when I want and have a better control. Rachel stop supporting HomeKit last year but, I think they stop supporting like Chamberlin did but I should be able to integrate with home kit as my new house runs on Home kit, my lights, security, garage door, blinds, my locks , all works with home kit and I hope this rachis will work as well. I will keep you posted and seek any help needed. Go Baylor.
When you buy a Rachio, you set it and forget it. The only time I water manually is when I’m blowing out the lines.
Thanks.
Perfectly timed release! Just finished installing my sprinklers last weekend, just need to run wiring and I'm done. I bought my Rachio a year ago and had no idea this enclosure existed. Thanks for the tip.
Glad I could help :)
One of these days I will have a sprinkler system. And when I do, I’ll definitely be getting a Rachio controller for it! Currently running off of a DIY setup of impact sprinklers and tons of hose. Great video!!
This is an inexpensive compromise - ua-cam.com/video/GJnqtBj61j0/v-deo.html
Smart
Rachio is the best and easiest thing out there
Love mine
You can connect rain sensor into ports labeled s1 and 24. Then you go into app to controller settings then accessories. Click the green check mark. Good to have as a backup. The app shows when rain sensor is trigged and you get alerts. Also the screws should have a rubber to attach to end of it. I also recommend putting some clear silicone inside and at the end of the wholes in the wall to prevent water from going in.
Thanks
Great video! I finally broke down and bought a rachio(w/outdoor enclosure) this year for my inground irrigation system and love it. I live in Michigan, would you recommend bringing it inside during the cold winter or is there enough protection with the outdoor enclosure? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
No need to bring it inside. I don’t even unplug it. I just set it to Standby mode on the app.
@@handydadtv Thanks for the response, wanted to make sure with the negative temps we get here in Michigan during winter.
I put one of these in a couple years ago. Absolutely fantastic. They dropped the ball on HomeKit support for a while but a fix is forthcoming. Mine has worked throughout the problems they’ve had.
And you’d take it with you when you move!
I just installed it in my living room where the most convenient setup for wiring. I would like to buy the housing and put the controller out side like the way you do. My question is any problem with the internet connection (wifi signal) ?
I have an access point in my garage. Here’s a tour of my home network if you’re interested:

Thanks, man.
I absolutely love this thing! I’m moving again and leaving it behind this time but I’ll be getting a new one for sure in the new house.
Can you plug rachio into an outdoor outlet instead of plugging it inside an outdoor box?
You should confirm on the website but I don’t think the power supply is weatherproof.
My controller is outside 70 feet, 4 walls, from my wifi, So, I had to use a wifi range extender.
I'm using a well pump so, have heard the relay current from the controller is 24VAC .3 wimpy amps max. Its not enough current to trigger a normal 40amp 240VAC relay. So what I did is used a little DIN rail 24VAC 10A relay to turn on a Rain Bird 24VAC transformer with more power for the beefy relay, else you have to buy a Monroe $100 relay that will trigger with the puny .3 amps the controller puts out. Of course nobody tells you this. Why doesn't Rachio supply adequate relay power???? Its a PITA.
Good question. I’m not sure.
👍My controller is 15 years old & sometimes I must power off then back on to clear error. I should swap it out but it's low on the "list" if ya know what I mean😆
Sic ‘Em!
Yeah!
Yay first this time
Love ur vid
Thanks 😊
Very nice presentation. thank you.
I am new to a home sprinkler system (which i am installing myself) and new to the rachio 3 idea, which I now own, ready to install.
I like the idea of convenience of installing the controller right on the far back wall right above the location of main manifold, valves, water connect., etc.
My question is: does it matter that the panel is not convenient to see or access on a regular basis?
Should I put it closer to my everyday traffic/access location where it is convenient to access and check on or adjust?
Or, does it matter that it is out of site, enclosed, since things are controlled on my phone or tablet anyway?
I like the far off, out of site location but only if it does not need regular face-to-face monitoring.
Buttons and or switches on the panel need attention once system is operating or not really?
I hope this all makes sense. thanks in advance for your quick support answer. rich
With a smart controller, you only need to physically access it if there is a problem. In my old house, it was in the garage, about 60 feet from the valves. In this house, it’s outside near the vacuum breaker, which is about 20 feet from the valves. In both cases, I rarely touched it.
Was that enclosure UL listed? Drilling a hole in the back may have voided that listing.
Perhaps, but that’s how the previous one was installed as well.
Hi yuo can help me install my Rachio control
This explains how. ua-cam.com/video/nxaqlt6eMm4/v-deo.html
I was wondering when the plug was going to be installed, thanks for being honest and showing we are not perfect....
Thanks. I always show my “doh”! moments to give everyone confidence that mistakes can be corrected.
I would be interested in a review of your ADT system or have you fully transitioned to ecobee
I never used ADT
@@handydadtv must have noticed your neighbors sign 😅
Oh I kept the sign in my garden for a long time, just as a deterrent. But I wouldn’t pay ADT’s rates. There are much cheaper options. This is my favorite ua-cam.com/video/ILCllqfQVNc/v-deo.html
Did you ever replace your flow meter?
No. They discontinued it.
@@handydadtv i am getting a rachio3, i see they do sell the flow meter... i am guessing a newer improved model?
@robrichman3314 The new one is a “partner product”. Maybe better. I haven’t tried it.
What did you get to plug the hole in the outdoor cover?
Home Depot in the electrical aisle.
I was yelling at you to put in the outlet before you started tightening those screws
😂 one of those DUH!! moments.
... and I forgot to plug it in -said every dad ever.
🤣
Thanks and most importantly…. GO BEARS!!!!
