That is why more and more people are buying used Toyota hybrids because they can set the climate control to keep the interior temperature at 70F for the whole night, and the engine will kick on now and then as needed, using only around 1 gallon of gasoline for the whole night even in -20F temps.
I bought a Cabela's sleeping bag for $179.00. Its rated down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. It's extra big also. I get in that thing and it's snug as a bug in a rug. No fear of cold. The outer layer protects against most of the cold. The inner layer is like a soft flannel shirt. I think the model is the Outfitter XL sleeping bag. Best investment ever.
I use an electric blanket with my power station and that keeps me toasty all night long. I also bought one for a back-up, just in case the first one fails for some reason. They also make the electric blanket that plugs into the cigarette lighter.
For health and power reasons, I'd only use an electric blanket to knock the chill off a cold bed, maybe 30 minutes before I hop in. But out of the wind as you are, you really should be able to stack on enough bedding (comforters!) to stay warm in bed. Make a little cave over your head, sort of like a snorkel hood that was all the rage in the '70s. Anyway, that's what I've always done, down to -30F. But I was always willing and able to bring a big synthetic-filled SlumberJack 0-degree bag, plus a couple comforters. It is bulkier than an electric blanket. I just don't like wrapping or covering myself with a giant electric resistor, laid out like a grid right next to my flesh. I don't want to risk getting cold, because the power goes out.
Years ago I ended up living out of my Hyundai Tucson with 3 cats, cages, the whole nine yards. I stayed at night at a truck stop, so my schedule was based on the trucker's arrival as I had to squeeze in-between them for the night. I spent some cold nights, no reflectives, jackery, nada. Yeah I froze my toucas off. lol. I would spend the day at the library charging my phone, laptop, while job hunting. I totally relate to what you are saying. No judgement here pal, you do what you have to do. You could say I was doing hard core micro mini rv'ing in my car. I had it all rigged out, so for my budget, I managed. Could I do it again? I can, I would prefer to do this in a van, more room for sure. I think you learn what you can deal with, do without, still be happy. Love your channel.
Omg, I'm thinking of getting some kind of rig for myself and my 3 cats. This is why I'm surfing you tube and of course to watch Bren because he has the experience and great advice and wisdom. But seeing your post got me excited. I'll bet it wasn't easy for you. Hope you find that job and it's something you love doing. My son served in Afghanistan in 2010 in a mountainous area, below zero temperatures. I sent him boxes of Hot Hands in several sizes. I asked local hunters before buying Hot Hands and they confirmed before I sent them. They camped out a lot, no fires allowed so they didn’t attract enemy gun fire. Their Marine Corps sleeping bags were not enough or even close. For Christmas, I sent him a gift in late October of a Special Forces sleeping bag ($300+). It looked exactly like his Marine Corps issued sleeping bag so he hid the Marine Corps bag and used the one I sent. It allowed him to use the Hot Hands during the day. Hot Hands definitely work.
You have such a great personality for doing these videos. 😊 I’ve found that so many people in recovery are some of the most creative (and sensitive). I came across your channel and i just want to say thanks. I’m raising a teenage son on my own and lost my mom a few years ago. I struggled with drinking to numb my sorrow, and seeing you get back on track is really inspiring. Thank you again…from Chicago.
Just a tip from my Army days. They taught us that you actually stay warmer in your sleeping bag if you DON'T dress for the outdoors, because your body heat warms up the bag and is reflected back. Thermal underwear as PJ's is what we used when tent camping as a child too. An old-fashioned Hot Waterbottle is awesome, too. One at your feet, and (4 me) one at the small of my back.
I was wondering, as I was freezing my behind off walking the dogs this weekend, if you were going to ride this out and maybe film. I really appreciate that you did, and this video def didn’t disappoint. Your channel and Nomadic Introvert are my two staples now. You are both so positive-I love it. You have great energy. Try thermal cooking. Boil water, pour into thermos to preheat it., then empty boiling water, put oats in and add new boiling water, cap it and shake. Wrap in blanket and set on side. In an hour or so, you will have great cooked oat meal. You can do the same and make stew.
I've been in my SUV in weather in the teens. I had a -20F sleeping bag and I found myself setting an alarm on my phone to wake me up every 2 hours. I would start the engine and run the heat for about 5 minutes and then repeated in 2 hours. Not great sleep but I was comfortable. Good luck tonight. Hope you sleep well.
Add a wool blanket and some mylar emergency blankets. Shroud the interior using the mylar, it reflects heat back to you. Use the wool to insulate you in the bag. My wife and I survived 13 degree below zero with heavy winds at North Rim of Grand Canyon. We had a army sleep system, she used the heavy bag, me with the patrol bag, 2 poncho liners and 3 mylar blankets. I kept the truck running all night, windows slightly cracked for ventilation. She slept great, I was dozing on and off all night to monitor the truck and heater. It was cold but we survived. The reflectives insulation works great! All the air leaks in a vehicle are hard to plug. We used newspaper and paper towels to plug up gaps at the doors.
Believe it or not, I was taught in one of the 8 SEAL survival schools I went to, you can also wrap your feet in tin foil. Worked for me. Love your videos.
Acts like a survival blanket Military style. You can buy them on-line. They should be a staple in every vehicle you own. They resemble a large reflective shot of foil. They help to keep the body heat contained. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE! An effective tool for sure.
Hello Bren! I already had my oatmeal. (Quaker apples & cinnamon) It makes a great snack in the evening. I love your videos, you are very funny and resourceful as well. I think you are amazing! You have such a great personality and attitude. I know you are working hard everyday and I wish you the best. Stay healthy and keep smiling!!🙂🍊
I've been living in my car full time for over five years, and I love it. I never use any form of heating in winter❄️, even though I spend a great deal of time parked up in the high mountains during severe weather conditions. I simply use high quality expedition clothing: mainly made of goose down. My Jacket, pants and boots are all 800-fill goose down. I prefer to sleep naked most of the time, or at the most a thin base-layer shirt, and find that the goose down sleeping bag is more than enough warmth (often too warm🥵). This lays on top of a goose down airbed.(I have three different sleeping bags: duck down for spring/summer/autumn. Goose down -20 for winter; and a minus -40C bag for severe low temperatures, or when I sleep in the mountains with no car or tent). Throughout the year I leave all four windows slightly open day & night, regardless of weather conditions. This provides a free flow of fresh air and also prevents moisture build up and avoids damp causing mold. During warmer months I keep the winter gear and clothing in dry storage. By the way, I also don't use insulation over the windows or windscreen. I much prefer natural light and dark. Although my rear windows do have dark tinted glass.
Hey, Brenbro! I layer plastic btw my fabrics: lawn bags btw blankets, grocery bags btw beanies and over my boot socks and jersey gloves. It's affordable, accessible, lightweight, not bulky and very effective. Keeps me toasty for less than Hot Hands (although they're blessing) by sealing in my body's own energy. And I wear a three-hole balaclava (ski mask) to protect my face. Stay cozy and warm this year, buddy. Keep doing what you're doing. 💖☮🙏
I love my oatmeal anytime, but especially in the winter months. I have the Quaker Oatmeal but I don’t have your blue/green rice maker, I’m going to get one if they are still available. I see this video is a year ago, I will have to go to your channel to see what you’re up to these days. I’m an old lady these days so I’m trying to pick up some ideas about survival, I do have a van just not enough experience on living out of it. The way things are looking I better start getting more serious. I absolutely love how you are always bringing up your mom in your conversations. Good luck and be safe on your journeys.
Hello. I just found your channel and subbed. On those super windy nights, if you can find a wind break, it will greatly help keep you from becoming an ice cube. If there is a space right beside those big containers in the parking lot, get right next to one. Or if you can find a building you can park right beside for the night. It will make a difference. You will still get cold, but not constantly hit by -30 winds. Stay safe.
08/26/24 OUTSTANDING video!!! and Thank you for teaching me that it is okay to leave the car running to keep a person WARM and SAFE from the ice cold and yes running the car DOES serve a purpose and it NOT wasteful, you are soooooooo right. Your knowledge and experience level is thru the ROOF! You are amazing for real! High five to ya :-) congrats on making it thru the night wisely and thank you for teaching us ALL about Hot Hands product to keep the head and feet warm and the scarf for the neck...yes I took notes LOL smiles.
I love the oatmeal. I add chopped walnut or pecans, and dried golden raisin or cranberry’s while the oatmeal is cooking! So yummy with honey added to that!!!❤
I follow so many people it’s crazy, but I like connecting with people even though our lives are completely different it’s nice seeing and learning new things.
The airflow over under and around the car is a big factor of pulling heat out of the vehicle. You’ll still feel muted effects of windchill because the heat is being dissipated at a higher rate.
This sure didn't feel like a long video, informative and entertaining...I just missed not seeing your TMNT friends...Now I'm off to watch and like all of your "shorts"! Take care Bren! 😄
I am really enjoying your channel! Learning some good information from your experiences. I am going on the road full time next year in the 2006 minivan I just purchased today. I am 68 yr. old woman who has been wanting to live on the road for years now. I am finally going to do it. I plan to chase 70 degrees, so I will not need the cold weather information, but just in case! I will know what to do from your excellent videos. Very inspiring!
You really are an inspiration. Found you today, 25th Feb 24, and started with your oldest video. Need to get to sleep now but looking forward to journey ahead, which you’ve already lived! All the best. 👍🏴
I wish u alle the best from Germany.. i really love your posts and all above your attiude while facing alle these issues in life :-) not at least your are improving my english with that stuff :-) Never give up 🙂
I've used Hot Hands in the toes of my shoes for years in cold weather. You just have to make sure your socks aren't so thick they block air circulation in your shoes since a little air exposure is what keeps Hot Hands active.
I've worked on the side of the interstate in 70 mph winds on the coldest days up in the mountains. I have my seven-layer hat on, two pair of socks, underwear, flannel shirts a few of them. Coveralls. A few shirts on and a jacket and I'm very warm. I have a mummy style Walmart sleeping bag and another rectangle cheap sleeping bag. I put the mummy sleeping bag in the rectangle style sleeping bag. On the coldest day of the year. And my place is not even insulated but half of it is. I didn't bother to cut the heat on that day or night before I went to bed. After 20 or 30 minutes inside the sleeping bags I was so hot I had to take off the nine blankets I had on top of the sleeping bags. And I had to take all three layers of my seven-layer hat off. If you got the gear you can be warm with no heat because I tested this on the coldest day of the year with even water Frozen inside my place. Heats nice but it's not necessary if you have the gear. I've got a very nice vented propane heater and the unvented heater also it runs on propane. But you got to be warm or you could freeze to death. It's a core of your body in your head is literally warm to hot your feet won't get as cold as quick even with two pairs of socks on. Eventually after 7 or 8 hours outside my feet will get a little cold. And I've got to warm my feet up with the exhaust for my generator or my hair dryer. I use to run a electric blanket and way less clothes but it got me too hot. I just couldn't turn down the electric blanket low enough.
An excellent video well worth your time to make and for us to watch. I appreciate your explanations at the end of the video. I was confident of your abilities the whole time. Russ
Im new to your channel (just subbed) much respect for your sobriety. I started drinking in the 6th grade, and finally got a duii at 39 and treatment & AA helped so much. 22nd of nxt month will be 30 freaking years. Today I have a choice. If this once lost cause can do it, so can anybody else. You only have to worry about Today because tomorrow never comes
You are awesome! Congrats on your sobriety! It only works, if you work it!! It's a tough battle, but you will be victorious! Even if relapse might occur, you still will beat the battle. Relapses are with everything, dieting, exercising, anger management, parenting, faithfulness, cursing, relationships etc. We all stop and start over with all kinds of things in life. As a mom with a son working through sobriety, there really is no words that can express how proud and thankful to see his life, like yours completely changed❤
WOW! I have never seen a video like this one before! Thanks so much for making it. I was glued to the screen the whole time wondering how you were going to stay warm.
I lived on a boat in Pawtuxet Cove between Warwick n Providence (in Cranston) 13 mos thru the winter back in 90&part of 91 very cool to see the area again!!! Plan to buy n convert a van in near future! Love your videos!!! ❤
you have to find a parking garage to shelter out of the wind. middle of a parking lot is just dumb. I have my doubts sometimes about people saying they live in their car.
Considering most parking garages cost money to park in and he’s living out of his car he’s actually smart for not spending a lot of money to park overnight
There’s no parking garages here where he can park for free overnight. It’ll run him $24 at least to park in an overnight GARAGE out here. In fact, I can really only think of 2 parking garages that are open to the public and would be convenient for him.
🙂 Glad this weather came in on year 2. This would have been bad for a newbie in a car. Thanks for the tips and cool to see the cooker is working out for meals.
Those mummy sleeping bags are awesome! Have used them myself. Also one of those cups or insulated bags you can plug into the cigarette lighter in the car for cooking is nice too.
When I had to live in my truck for a few days, I wish I had known about Walmart. I tried finding places to sleep and was always interrupted. If you're not homeless, you could probably park anywhere, and no one would bother you for days. But the minute you're homeless, it's like you put off a different vibe, and you can't catch a break anywhere. Good luck!
The wind will cool your car faster than if there were no wind, but the temperature in the car will never go below the ambient temperature which is stated to be -6.
I'm sure you've done this a bunch and know what works for you but try not to wear as many layers to bed. When you get in and fall asleep your body gets used to the amount of layers so when you wake up you won't be able to put anything else on because you already have that many layers on. I sleep in base layers, underwear/sometimes long johns when camping in below freezing etc. Stay safe out there! I use a big agnes sleeping bag when car camping as well
It's all about the sleeping pad. Makes a huge difference. Heat conduction from the body is an enormous drain. Get something with an R value of 6 or better. Something like foam with a reflective space blanket on the bottom to reflect infrared back towards the body.
Ok.. haven't even watched yet, but so excited this is over 30 mins chillin (literally!!) with my boy! Can't wait to relax, grab a drink and snack and watch!
You earned a subscription from me as soon as you said alcohol sobriety. I'm currently living in mine. Due to alcohol abuse, but trying to make the best of it, and embrace it. I've followed and dreamt of van life long before my situation. Alcohol destroys, and it is extremely hard quitting.
Just found your channel! i'm a functioning Alcoholic but the doc just gave me a wake up call that i'm killing myself. i need motivation like this. thank you!
Life can be rough. I admire your fortitude. Here's tip. Find a spot out of the worst ravages of the wind! You couldn't have picked a more exposed spot.
You could place a nice wool blanket (a xl twin size might work) over your sleeping bag and put pillows (maybe one of those body pillows) between you and the car (insulation). Don’t forget underneath you maybe another mat or thick blanket. I live in Texas and a couple of winters ago we lost power for days. I layered everyone with blankets and pillows to keep heat in, had a few wool blankets and that topped it off. Now we have an ice storm emergency kit and it’s full of hot hands.
Really enjoying your content...Such a nice way for me to wind down in the evening. One suggestion for a nice breakfast or a light dinner instead of oatmeal, I think you can still get it in the States...You have to try Malt-O-Meal or Cream of Wheat. Same kind of cooking with milk but you add brown sugar and salted butter to taste...trust me.
Walmart has an electric throw that actually has snaps and pockets in it and it has a USB battery pack.. and you can buy some really comfortable hunting socks that uses a USB battery pack as well…
Awesome video. I am a new sub. You are doing it right my friend 🤙. One tip I found helpful when I sleep in my jeep is I use a car electric blanket plugged into my Jackery 240. I use it to pre heat my sleeping bag and then turn it off because it does draw a fair bit of power. I then can turn it back on in the night for a little top up of heat. This worked for me in minus 47 Celsius in my wrangler. Keep doing what you are doing 🤙
I lived in my car for 11 months but that time i used to live in Cali. Didn’t have to deal with cold weather. What a great memories. Definitely my biggest personal freedom 10 out of 10 in life. Now thinking about doing it again but in Colorado. Amazing Bren ! thank you for everything you share with us and for us.

how did you keep your cats from freezing and overheating (assuming summers were just as bad)?
I kept the car warm by running ac and heat off and on, keeping them well fed and watered, it wasn't easy.

What?!?!?
Acts like a survival blanket Military style. You can buy them on-line. They should be a staple in every vehicle you own. They resemble a large reflective shot of foil. They help to keep the body heat contained. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE! An effective tool for sure.
Cold weather bites! Love oatmeal before bed! Hot Hands are awesome!😊 Facemasks work fantastic and wool is best!
Commented to my friend that” those mask” paid of in added body warmth when needed. 👌🏽
I appreciate your courage and positive attitude. Keep the faith, brother. Blessings!
I 22:46 love your shorts Bren! 🤣🤣that doesn’t sound quite right but you know what I mean.
Boom. Bren's hit 900 subs! Let's here it for the man! Boom boom! 💥
I was born and raised in RI . Just recently moved to Tennessee. 2 years now . I Miss RI
So yummy with honey added to that!!!❤
Sounds great!
Here in the UK. I like to add a little bit of Marmite to oat meal. I think it’s just a me thing not particularly a British thing.
You should try Currents in oatmeal. They're similar to raisins but a berry
I love oatmeal with pecans, cranberries and currents.
@@brendalevesque6384what is Marmite?
I follow so many people it’s crazy, but I like connecting with people even though our lives are completely different it’s nice seeing and learning new things.
The airflow over under and around the car is a big factor of pulling heat out of the vehicle. You’ll still feel muted effects of windchill because the heat is being dissipated at a higher rate.
I love vehicle survival.
You're doing a great job.
Your humble and relaxing way helps me relax and accept myself just as I am.
Thankyou.
❤ You are strong and resilient. Thanks for sharing parts of your life so openly. ❤
Thank you!
You're really good at this Bren, I can easily see you go a long ways 😃
Thank you so much!
Agreed!
This sure didn't feel like a long video, informative and entertaining...I just missed not seeing your TMNT friends...Now I'm off to watch and like all of your "shorts"! Take care Bren! 😄
The boys went out training that day. Finally got some peace and quiet. Thanks!
Love your videos! You are enjoyable to watch and I'm sold on your minimalist lifestyle.
Thank you! Greatly appreciated! 💚
Really enjoy your videos Bren. Thanks for uploading them :)
Glad you enjoy them! Stay tuned.
Você fala com muita clareza e eu consigo entender quase tudo!!!
Obrigada!!!
@@DottieStanley glad to hear!
Oatmeal, brown sugar, butter, honey, and some milk
You really are an inspiration. Found you today, 25th Feb 24, and started with your oldest video. Need to get to sleep now but looking forward to journey ahead, which you’ve already lived! All the best. 👍🏴
I'm new here too why doesn't he live in an apartment?
@wilE6764 your joking right. Watch the solar camper he's a nurse living in a car. You save a shit ton of money while traveling.
@Bluestarseed1 No..doesn't he park at the same walmart in RI every night?.. I know what you're referring to though
@@wilE6764 Walmart don't really care. They have a ton of workers just in the car as well a ton of nomad living park on Walmart.
@@Bluestarseed1 NM you're missing the whole point
Bless your heart man. We're all proud of you.
Your voice is so soothing 😻
Your amazing man. living in Australia we dont get cold like that. Love your content . Thank you.
Nursery heater. Small, powerful and has an automatic shut off button if tipped over.
Russ
Thanks!
Thank you, much appreciated!
😊. stay safe and warm. God Bless You
Hey I really enjoyed watching this! Highly educational!
Great video. Enjoyed the experiment. I learned a great deal. I might increase my warmth with a sleeping bag liner.
Greetings from........ Arizona! 😅 Glad i found your channel. I've never been east coast. You gotta be one tuff cowboy! 👍
Just stumbled upon your channel. You are sooooo likeable! Love your video! 😊
Thanks for all the tips you never know when you might have to live in your car. God bless you stay safe
Just found your channel. You are a tremendous inspiration. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
you have to find a parking garage to shelter out of the wind. middle of a parking lot is just dumb. I have my doubts sometimes about people saying they live in their car.
Considering most parking garages cost money to park in and he’s living out of his car he’s actually smart for not spending a lot of money to park overnight
Agreed. Doesn’t even need to be a parking garage. Parking against a building would serve as a partial wind barrier.
Some parking garages state, "No overnight parking, violators will be towed."
There’s no parking garages here where he can park for free overnight. It’ll run him $24 at least to park in an overnight GARAGE out here. In fact, I can really only think of 2 parking garages that are open to the public and would be convenient for him.
Thanks for the tip about not putting cold feet in your socks!
🙂
Glad this weather came in on year 2.
Ok, I live in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. And I CANNOT even comprehend that kind of COLD!!!!!!! Dude, you are a rock star!!
That’s funny to me because I don’t know how you can cope with that kind of HEAT!!! I’ll take the cold any day over the heat
Good luck!
Love your vids. I’m in providence. A thought: add the milk first then the water kind of cleans the measuring cup for you after .
Have fun!
God bless you man , love you content . All the way in belguim
You’re so right about warming feet first.😊
Hats off to you for making the most out of a challenging situation! Buena suerte!
Just found your channel! i'm a functioning Alcoholic but the doc just gave me a wake up call that i'm killing myself. i need motivation like this. thank you!
I’m glad you are here. Welcome!
Nice video man. I enjoyed it. Stay warm!
Life can be rough. I admire your fortitude. Here's tip. Find a spot out of the worst ravages of the wind! You couldn't have picked a more exposed spot.
Awesome job, really enjoy your thoughts and advice.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ingenious use of hot hands! In the beanie!
Blessings 🙏
Really enjoying your content...Such a nice way for me to wind down in the evening. One suggestion for a nice breakfast or a light dinner instead of oatmeal, I think you can still get it in the States...You have to try Malt-O-Meal or Cream of Wheat. Same kind of cooking with milk but you add brown sugar and salted butter to taste...trust me.
Thanks for the tip!
The foot warmer in the socks trick really does work.
I like your channel. I don’t plan to live in my truck, but you never know when you may get stranded in a blizzard. Life saving emergency information.
Walmart has an electric throw that actually has snaps and pockets in it and it has a USB battery pack.. and you can buy some really comfortable hunting socks that uses a USB battery pack as well…
If i slept in my car in that weather i woulda just kept the engine running all night and staying nice and warm lol. Loving your videos!
Was wondering if you would make it….lol glad to see you weathered to storm 🌬️
Sure did!
I like your cold weather videos Bren.
Your positive attitude is infectious thank you so much for posting you're awesome and amazing videos. Do you have a buy me a coffee link
this guy is a survivor
Add salted butter to that oatmeal! Game changer😉✌️
Yay you got 5 new followers sin e yesterday 🥳👌 well deserved!
Thank you!
