If the Aerochrome Movie isn't just The Pick of Destiny but instead of Tenacious D its Caleb and Jason defeating Satan in some sort of film photography contest I want my money back
Asteroid City is a film about grief and how we navigate it. The whole chanting scene; “we cant wake up if we don’t go to sleep” basically is trying to say that you can’t heal and grow unless you look inward and do the work to heal. I think its a beautiful film about the human condition with grief but I do think that it was a bit toooooo ambiguous a lot of the time and could’ve been a bit more digestible
Jason, I understand your feelings. You may want to check out some movies like "The Long Dumb Road," "Kodachrome," and "The Bang Bang Club." I feel like now is the perfect time to make new waves in movies. I'm here for it, Caleb.
Got to say, I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan. Top 5 director of all time for me. Got to side with Jason, probably my second to last fav from him. No recency bias either, I put The French Dispatch to #1 for me.
Speaking of spots, I was shooting video outdoors, in daylight, without ND filter, and at F22, Everything was showing up. It was like 101 Dalmatians, without the dogs.
I watched Asteroid City yesterday :P and I saw there a really big hint from the creator, about the meaning of it. SPOILER ALERT !!! SPOILER ALERT !!! SPOILER ALERT !!! There is a scene when Augie steps out of the in-color-play into the grayscale-life sequence saying "Why does Augie burn his hand on the Quicky-Griddle? I still don't understand the play" HaHa! So he goes to the director backstage asking him "Am I doing him right?" - I feel lost // Good - Do I just keep doing it? // Yes - Without knowing anything? // Yes - Isn't there supposed to be some kind of an answer out there (...) Woodroughs line about the meaning of life. // "Maybe there is one." - Well, that's my question... I still don't understand the play // Doesn't matter. Just keep telling the story. You're doing him right. The film seems to be about life and the stage play being the metaphor for it (or the other way around) ;) You have your roles (in life), partially by coincidence. You're trying to do everything right even when you don't know the meaning of all of this. It doesn't always work as planned and there is also loss (even the scene with the wife was removed), but the play (life) moves on. Immediately after that dialog the "Augie" actor steps out for a cigarette noticing: "Oh. It's you, the wife who played my actress" (replaced words / meanings), which is followed by a dialog removed from the play, but apparently emphasizing the element of loss in life. Then the writer dies in a car crash, followed by the "you can't wake up if you don't fall asleep" scene. My initial thought was: "you can't understand life, if you never dare to dream", but it could be actually the darker thought "you can't be alive, if you don't die". So, this element of loss is clearly stressed in the movie, perhaps to make the following point: "the show must go on" (Freddie Mercury). It felt in line with the somewhat absurdly casual nuclear detonations and police chases right behind the window ;) I wouldn't say that Asteroid City is about the role "loss" plays in our lives, but rather about us living out a scenario and playing out our roles as well as we can, despite whatever happens: "Doesn't matter. Just keep telling the story. You're doing him right." (director) sounds like: Doesn't matter. Just keep living your story. You're doing it right. PS. Actually both interpretations of "you can't / if you don't" make sense to some degree :D A. There is a speech scene in which the general talks about the wars in the past and confronts them with the new 'clever' generation which dreams out the future. Notice how much spacetime :D this competition and the Alien take, and also the line saying literally that the Alien is a metaphor for something. B. The loss of wife / scene / writer suggests the second interpretation. Maybe it supposed to be both?
If you want to shoot actual 70mm Cinefilm in a stills Camera get a Linhof Technika 2x3, a Technika 70, a Technikardan 6x9 or a Studienkamera 70. There are 70mm Cine Film backs for the 6x9 Linhof cameras that you can put perforated 70mm cine film in and shoot as in Imax 15 perf.
2:20 protip: attach unused computer monitor or some cheapo one to your cameras hdmi-out. So you get the liveview in full monitor quality. Makes focusing and fine adjustments super easy.
I've only seen it once, but I think you could get more out of Asteroid City with a knowledge of the history of theater, especially in the 50s and 60s. I'm no expert in the field, but I think that's where a lot of more experimental productions were being made.
I don't know when this was recorded but I hope you guys weren't in Portland this week. Over 100 four days in a row is rare and would be some crappy luck.
@@deathbystereo- hahaha true. To be honest I never watched the trailer, I just heard Trevor wisecup talking about it so I thought I’d give it a watch (last time I take movie advice from him :) as soon as I saw Tom hanks on the screen I realised mistakes have been made 🙈
@@Folkert123 They use it in the movie because they can’t use electric cameras. I think it’s BS too, hand cranking an IMAX camera. But the camera body itself is a real IMAX Mk II.
You guys should try some real film scanners. I found a good deal on a Minolta multi scan pro and I made a custom holder for pano. It's so much more convenient than getting out my digital camera and can scan 6x6 at 100mp. Still very DIY and still use NLP.
The lion king poster being hung up now is a nice continuity touch
the twin uploads and a triple hit the same week, impossible
This podcast definitely works as a Friday pod- helps me to get hyped up after a long week to shoot during the weekend. Cheers!

Shit, I'd actually donate money to see this happen.

I partially agree, but I think this line could be actually even less metaphorical: "you can't be alive, if you don't die"

12:42 I'd just buy another fridge 😂
So exited to see photos from Seattle! I’ve been needing inspiration for Seattle photography. (Where I live)
0:25 more airhorns please!
Hey, during your new York video I saw you had a podcast GX Ace. I'd love to know more about that guy. Is that ever coming out?
Hell yeah, that would be amazing.
Speaking of spots, I was shooting video outdoors, in daylight, without ND filter, and at F22, Everything was showing up. It was like 101 Dalmatians, without the dogs.
Another fun listen
Asteroid city is THE film of this year. Loved it. Can’t get enough
Jason saying it’ll probably rain in Portland while we’ve barely seen a drop all summer 😅
Yeah for everyone that doesnt know the PNW is 75 and sunny in the summer and dreary in the winter.
They actually used to make 100ft rolls of Portra, not sure which flavor though. Maybe 160NC

MAKE THAT MOVIE!! 👏🏼👏🏼
Lmao @ Jason's chair

Can you not get Baxter some panniers for your gear?
This was the first internet *video* I kept watching for the plot after I finished.
I love how Jason's watch doesn't even work
Good late night darkroom listening 🤘
Can Jason get a more comfortable chair to sit on?
Finally the Caleb intro is back
Jason - try air fried uncrustables
Anyone know where Jason's shirt is from? Pretty dope
32:15 same here, unless it's a hotel room.
Caleb, you initiated my siri, idk what that means
This is so cute! Please make more

Babe wake up a new #kodakbringbackaerochrome dropped
Signed an NDA? Guess there was no such thing as that free lunch after all.
expired slide film actually works better for me that expired color negative film. I suppose it's how its stored though
Introvert here, and yes, I get FOMO ALL THE TIME.
i had a hair in all my scans, because i suck at using a blower on my negatives before scanning

You gotta crowdfund if you do a movie!
I walked out of Asteroid city. Wes is great. But that move felt like it was a crowd funded movie with special guest actors.
Surprised you went based on trailer. It looks awful
@@deathbystereo- hahaha true. To be honest I never watched the trailer, I just heard Trevor wisecup talking about it so I thought I’d give it a watch (last time I take movie advice from him :) as soon as I saw Tom hanks on the screen I realised mistakes have been made 🙈
Sad to hear that our algorithm overlords at UA-cam don’t also provide comprehensive healthcare packages 😢
This was fun! But you need to bump up Jason’s mic level, it’s consistently lower on all these episodes.
Bro I have IBS I can and WILL shit anywhere. I do know a few people who wont use anything except the home bowl but I think they're insane
Aerochrome movie
- alien Barbie, IMAX
Got married this summer, time just FLIES until the day.
100% agree, asteroid city is not that good.
How do you dslr scan your xpan shots ? Take multiple shots of the negatives and then stitch ?
I just need you two to know that i mute the intro of this everytime due to embarrassment...you smarty smart smarters.
Can we do a photo walk meetup in PDX when you get here?
yes please
I figured they already would have been here but I don't know when it's recorded. This week would have been some bad luck, for sure.
I think loading an IMAX mag is easier than a 16mm mag since it’s so much larger.
They put ND filters on diner windows??
Six Super8 cartridges? Either Caleb hit the big time, is selling meth or sold his wedding photos rights to New Idea…
Meth would be cheaper than film.
Oh my looordd.!!!
What did you mean with the nope imax part? It had parts that were shot with actual imax camera's. Or did I mis something?
Yes you did. It had about an hour of IMAX footage. Get the Blu ray.
@@VariTimo but what are they talking about, its about a weird hand cranked imax camera or something

The real question is have you seen Barbie??
Why didn't you call this Bronciabois?
Use up those Lomo F2 MF😊
Ah yes… Men of culture we meet again
Intentional but that doesn't mean to shoot less. You guys should listen to Martin Parr instead.
Some advice for people doing a podcast, don’t ask Siri questions. Everyone with an iPhone just got a weather update.
Asteroid City not good you can't change my mind don't even try
so glad the doodledeedoo in the beginning is back
