The lyrics are heartbreaking. At 70 I'm still moved by these songs about love, longing, loss and renewal.
side note: A teenage Cher is one of the backup singers.

This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them are "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

I told you this before, but this song was repopularized after it was used in "Top Gun", and the same for the other one you heard, "Unchained Melody", after being in the 90s movie "Ghost". So these tend to be the two songs by them that everyone knows. "Soul and Inspiration" is another good one.
Bill Medley, the deep voiced one, also did a duet with Jennifer Warnes for a song specifically made for the soundtrack of the 80s movie "Dirty Dancing" called "I've Had The Time Of My Life", which became a big hit at the time. You should check out the song and the movie. There's actually so much good music in that movie that they released two soundtrack albums. Including a song sung by Patrick Swayze, the actor and star of that movie, called "She's Like The Wind", which I actually love.

Tell you what we didn't have stereo in our vehicles everything was on shitty AM but tell you what when this first came out I heard it in my car and had to pull over. Everly's atta Canada were on fire back then as well they got it all started along with Elvis. Big O as well. Tell you what Big O had some incredible range Hatfield and Gene Pitney reminded me of him. Weren't the days. Later on Steve Perry came along in the 70's and 80's. He''s the only singer I thought in these guy's league. 81 here too.

Bisscute.... you commented about how loud the background sound was .... that was the work of producer Phil Spector ...he created the legendary 'wall of sound' to add fullness to a song. He was also husband to Ronnie Spector who was the lead singer of the group The Ronettes .... their hit song Be My Baby was also produced by Phil has that same 'wall of sound'. If you listen to that song you'll immediately identify it.
