  • We review the new Sur Ron Bee lightweight electric motorcycle. Also known as the Firefly, or just "Sur Ron". Ride video here: • Sur Ron Bee Electric M...
    The manufacturers site is found here www.sur-ron.com...
    Purchase in the USA from Lunacycle.com
    Purchase in Australia and NZ from aebikes.com.au (they also ship world wide)
    Notables not mentioned- Gross bike weight about 110lbs. The bike is set up for about 150lb rider weight, but has preload control for heavier riders. The charger supplied by Luna Cycle takes about 3 hours, 10 amps of charging power. Run time is about 35 miles on the street or 1 to 2 hours flogging off road. The easily removable battery makes hot swapping very fast.

      @LunaCyclesLLC 6 років тому +22

      do you really think you could ever recover a lithium battery that had fallen down to 0v? This just means your BMS shut off power to the discharge which on a micro processor based bms like on the sur rons can happen for a number of reasons. The fact you were able to even get to ride your bike means it did not fall below an unsafe level.

    That's a very important piece of information that the battery pack arrived flat. I would love to know what the actual voltages of the cells were. You are right: letting a lithium ion cell go below 3 volts per cell REALLY shortens their life span. If I ordered this bike and it came with a battery pack that was below 3V/cell I'd send the thing back. Or at least bargain for a replacement battery pack right away.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 років тому

      So far so good. I've alerted Luna to it and we are going to simply use the battery. If a problem arises, we can get it swapped out. If no problem arises, I'll keep riding it.

      Thanks Paul! The youtube page is just a side project for informational purposes. I can give people information and help when appropriate, and have the resources to bring it together into a vid. So it would be a shame to not do this, in my opinion. Since it seems there isn't a lot of information about this bike yet, it was appropriate. Heck, Luna cycle where I bought it from doesn't know anything about the bike, they couldn't answer any of my questions and have been zero help after the sale. Taking their sweet time to respond with a "I don't know" is pretty weak IMO. Couldn't take that week and research or inspect your own inventory and come back with a real response? Just a little frustrating, which is one reason I made this vid so other people didn't have to get the same runaround on super basic information.

      The BMS was shut off so the battery terminals were reading zero, didn't know how low they really were. Didn't take long to hit 48v on the terminal, so it must have not been much below 3v/cell.

    E-bike laws seem better in the US than Canada. That thing is illegal in Ontario.
    1. e-bike must be no faster that 20 mph and can't have sport mode switch.
    2. e-bike must have pedals
    3. motor must be direct drive and not connected to gears
    4. it cant be more the 500 watt.....
    5. The above laws suck.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 років тому

      Might require insurance if the law has changed in the last few years, I have a friend with a legitimate e-bike and the Cops pulled him over 7 times in 6 months. He had to fight it. It looked a bit to much like a Scooter. He also had a Slow move vehicle sign on the back and that is illegal. In the end he won.

    Great video John! Those are exactly the things I need to know about an electric bike. Here in Toronto I'll have to add a set of studded winter tires to the inventory, but that bike would get me through the city and down to work quick. I wonder if it'll fit in the elevator? Hmmm. ...

    • @charliejohnson_16
      @charliejohnson_16 6 років тому

      What kind of licensing is required in Ontario for this?

    • @shovington67
      @shovington67 6 років тому +2

      Charlie Johnson , at the moment nothing is required in the form of a license, but you must follow all bicycle rules have a front and back light as well as a bell. I always suggest the brightest you can possibly afford, and aimed at drivers in a way that causes them the most annoyance possible. Helmets for bicycles either, but if your not a very proficient rider or your bike goes faster than you can pedal, get a helmet, and have an annoying red flashing light on the back of that helmet, because when some idiot hits you the court will award you the most money when you show them the friggin light show you've got going on , and you can prove that " Damn right I was visible!". I run a 800 lumen flashing white light on the front of my bike, and a 1000 lumen red on the back, and I have an extra 400 lumen red on my backpack, all of them rechargeable lithium, it's about $150 in lighting, and that's night or day, and I've had drivers yelling at me pissed off because it hurts their eyes, I've never been hit in rush hour or night time traffic in my life, and I ride everywhere in the city. Toronto has Los Angeles /New York City traffic, and it's getting worse, 6.5 million people in the metropolitan Toronto area. Hopefully, as long as people stay safe with electric bikes in the city, the laws won't get to where some american cities have gone or God forbid, Hong Kong with its up to 3 months in jail, crazy !

    • @DriftKingKenzie
      @DriftKingKenzie 6 років тому

      doesnt this bike need pedals to be legal on toronto? im looking to purchase one but the only thing stopping me is the pedals @shovington67

    • @shovington67
      @shovington67 6 років тому

      DriftKingKenzie , yes that is one of the stipulations , pedals make it legal but they're just for show, you could barely go anywhere with that gearing. You should check Alibaba because the suppliers of these electric bikes, scooters, and motorcycles will sell you 1 unit and ship it to you for about 40% of what you pay in the U.S.A. and instead of paying $800 for anew lithium battery in a year, they sell them for between $150 and $200 depending on the size. The mark up on these bikes is HUGE,and if you can wait for a month or so for shipping, you can really save a lot of money. In comparison, my buddy wanted a carbon fiber bicycle frame, so he bought it from China and he paid $600 instead of the local retail of $4000, he waited approximately 40 days for delivery. Alibaba is a good faith middle man that holds your money until your purchase is delivered and your satisfied, then they release the cash.

      I bet the packaging has gotten better. I got the first of the first bikes and it was probably inside a LTL container and subject to a lot more rearranging. Current shipments are completely full cargos and won't have as much chance for damage.

  • @Steel5xchampS
    @Steel5xchampS 6 років тому

    Incredibly sharp looking bike. The frame looks amazing. Looks like the majority of the bike is made of high quality alumimum which is a major plus because it retains strength but at a fraction if the weight. Given the fact that both the battery and motor are heavy having that package with aluminum or even titanium parts surrounding it keeps the weight if the bike down quite a bit. Im gonna guess and say the entire 🚲 weighs substantially under 100lbs. Its probably around 50lbs +/-. But it has front & rear hydraulic disc brakes. A beefy fully adjustable unishock in the rear, and top notch oversized, fully adjustable inverted front forks that can be locked out. The twist throttle is another plus giving you more precision and control when riding hard on back trails, etc. The over look of the bike is amazing. For $3200+/- you woukd be hardpressed to find a bike this nice with similar features that can do 45mph.

Primarily, they were "tight enough" to get through a few hundred miles. 2nd, any bike rider must go over a new bike and also do regular checks on nuts and bolts, this is a big part of owning any bicycle or powered machine. While I would certainly prefer the bike to be totally perfect, do keep in mind that I have been building my own bikes for decades and will nitpick details that might be good enough for everybody else.

      Supposedly, the battery is made of high grade Panasonic cells. From my personal experience, from owning 17 different electric bicycles, is that every one of them had a full to 3/4 charge upon arrival or when I would pick one up from a local dealer. This Sur Ron model I was and am very interested in buying based on the specs provided by Luna Cycle, but not if the batteries have not been taken care of.

    Thanks for sharing. That bike looks pretty fun! So I'm no pro wheel builder by any stretch but working in the bike industry I am a bike geek and have some wheel builds under my belt. That said it seems to me that with the right pick of parts that bike could be a good candidate for some 650b-plus wheels. Those stock 19" wheels seem to be closer the the stance of B+ than to a 29er and B+ is fairly interchangeable with 29's as long as the frame geometry can handle it and you have the clearance. Sounds to me like you've been building bikes long enough to know about all of that. Could be fun. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on that.

  • @mattweisz
    @mattweisz 6 років тому +10

    How can you rate it a 9 out of a 10, especially since it came with the dead battery, and very poor assembly? Tell your camera operator to zoom in on what you’re talking about as opposed to zooming out so we can see you. Also, were you paid to do this review?

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 років тому +8

      The battery capacity was not affected by the low state of charge, and evidently the packs are sent in this low voltage state for shipping/ import reasons. Turns out the charger would have started the first time if I just waited more than a few seconds, so that was my fault there. Assembly itself wasn't poor at all. You have to keep in mind I have been building bikes for decades and am being really really nitpicky about everything, you are getting the unfiltered deal and not a sugar coated review. This is a bike that has to be partially built. Tightening and checking bolts is part of the final assembly procedure that SOMEONE must do on all bikes. No actual issues material or otherwise have cropped up, so for this bike in today's market the 9/10 rating is still accurate IMO. A high quality bike at practically half the cost of anything near it. There are a lot of bikes similar to this one in the 10k to 12k range even. Wish I was paid for this, lol! The bike was bought at full price, and I paid employees to film and edit it so other people could make an informed decision. I've been riding the pants off of the bike every day I can, absolutely love it.

      The battery itself wasn't "dead", but the BMS had shut off the output. After it was charged, no issue. I ride this bike every day the weather allows and would still rate it 9 out of 10.

    • @jpmorgan187
      @jpmorgan187 6 років тому +1

      HolmesHobbies
      It sounds like the batteries were discharge to the point where the BMS had to intervene. Do you know how many volts per cell? If it was a deep discharge, there could be permanent damage and you could get really bad life.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 років тому

      The BMS soft kicks at 3v per cell and hard cuts at 2v per cell. Since I was able to reset the BMS, the cells were not below 2v, which would have been the point where damage would have happened on this particular cell. So somewhere between 2v and 3v. I didn't feel like taking the battery apart to test individual strings before using the bike. My best estimates based on the measurements I took are around 2.8v per cell.

      #1, I don't care if it is. #2, lithium batteries are 100% recyclable if people don't just throw them out. Tesla's battery factory recycles this format of cell, solvent and all.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  6 років тому +10

      To expound on #1, I don't care if electric vehicles are "more deadly" for the earth, mostly because there isn't enough information to really say that is absolutely true. There is as much support for them being better as their is being worse, and it is tough to trust that the fossil fuel industry isn't just spreading propaganda to keep their revenue stream flowing. I like electric vehicles not because of some "green" feeling, but because of the raw performance and power they give. I have dirtbikes, I have scooters. One by one they are all getting replaced by lighter and more powerful electric bikes. 6 of one, half a dozen of another. I'll take the one that is easier to maintain and produces peak torque at zero RPM.
