Nice video as usual. The price increase to about 7k at the time of this video from 5k when it was first announced changes the equation though. At the original offering, it was closer to scooters. Now when compared to 400-500cc motorcycles, it is a harder to justify easily given the company's short history and lower versatility (rather low top speed for much time on US motorways)
I know this is 9 months old but I’m starting to research electric motorcycles as gas will eventually be banned in California. I can’t believe they’ve dared to wander into SV650 territory with this pricing
@@inthenickoftime__ Agree with part of your comment. Gas is not going to be banned for a long time in CA. Even in 12 years (2035), it will be new gas car sales that will stop. Used cars, slightly used cars imported from other states (loophole), and motorcycles will not be touched for 15-20. The tech and prices will be much better by then and you probably won't want a gas powered vehicle (based on performance, nostalgia maybe).
@@james45478 I hope you’re right. There’s a lot that will have to change about infrastructure for electric cars and bikes to be viable for everyone. I considered buying an electric car until I realized I have no convenient way to charge it: my apartment complex was built in the 60’s, and while I do have access to regular 120v, level 1 charging is essentially useless, and the owner has no interest in adding any sort of charging capability. I’m sure I’ll have a house by the time it’s a problem, but that won’t be the case for lots of people. Sitting around for an hour in a parking lot waiting for my car to charge is simply not something I’m willing to do when I can fill a gas tank in 3 minutes.
@@inthenickoftime__ Yes there is a lot that has to be built and it will not make sense for everyone (particularly those that live in rural areas). However used, cars from NV, or new plug in hybrids (that people only sometimes plug in) will be available when that happens a dozen years from now.
I had the choice about a year ago - $5k (plus delivery fee of about $1k btw) for this or $4k total for a 2019 Ninja 400. I went with the Ninja and very glad I did, the performance on it just blows this thing out of the water. Plus I would have been pissed to learn about the effectively non-removable battery, that was a huge selling point to charge it under my desk at the office but not with that more complicated system. Glad I made the right decision!
From what I understand this is the first version and unlike the Ninja, it's going to have a lot less maintenance to deal with as well as being something that you can charge at home. Don't get me wrong, the Ninja will do a ton of stuff that this won't, so you'd probably have been unhappy with this one. But as a cheap commuter motorcycle, it's probably a better choice.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade Maybe it is the first generation, but I would rather not be the one to beta test it on my dime. Maintenance is pretty easy and well understood on the Ninja, I did all the 7,500 mile stuff in the manual myself, and I think more mechanics would understand it over the metacycle right now. The other thing, the metacycle only started shipping recently. That means for $2k less I got about 6,500 miles in the saddle, and I calculated I saved an additional $1,750 in gas savings and parking fees this last year alone. I just don't feel there is anything the Metacycle can do right now aside from being electric that I am really missing. But hey, glad people are enjoying it for what it is, that's good. Maybe I'll get the Gen 3 down the road!
This watches like a story. The introduction of a character, drama regarding their origin, conflict of interest between riders, a slightly melancholic but satisfying ending. High quality
I like the concept of a minimalist e-motorcycle which has the spirit of a e-bicycle. A real errand runner which is not barred from taking a short jaunt on the highway. If the thing is reliable and doesn't leave you stranded with burnt-out MOSFETs I can see this bike making a lot of people very, very happy. What I'd like to see is some standardization in the lithium battery pack field. If the 50AH, 72V battery here (my rough guess) is costing you half the value of the bike, that's a significant investment. I'd like the battery to be able to be pulled easily, for urban dwellers who lack an outdoor charge outlet, and the compartment key-locked for battery theft prevention when briefly parked unattended. For homeowners, I'd like that battery pack to also work with a pure sine wave inverter as a handy AC power source during outages, and also be able to put it in a riding mower, powered watercraft (outboard or jet-ski), etc. Why buy multiple batteries for these things when you will be using only one of them at a time, or only sporadically?
@@_implying This is true, one may cycle a lithium battery only so many times, and overcharging or repeatedly charging right up to 100% capacity further diminishes its longevity. But they have a shelf life too, and there is a profound environmental cost to manufacturing them, and an obvious monetary cost to buying the bigger ones. Time is not your friend regarding your battery investment, may as well use that battery; they are not an ornament to place on a shelf. Sure, power your phones, portable devices with proprietary-use lithium batteries but for bigger (18, 36, 48, 72, 102 volt) batteries there should be set, interchangeable batteries in group sizes. Within that group a maker could have caddies for two such batteries within that group should the current capacity for power and range demands require it.
This would require publicly traded for profit companies to coordinate efforts for consumer and environmental benefit. This won't happen because that doesn't maximize profits. Integrated, proprietary batteries maximize profits
Sound perfect if all I want to do is jaunt to my neighborhood grocery to pick up a few things, and stop by a local lunch place/pub on the way back. And for $5K. Plus I'm sure it prolly won't spike my electrical bill with the recharges. Might just look into it. Just wish the battey would come out like an ebikes.
I love how honest, yet poetic review was. It's like, they were going into this knowing that Sondors PR people were going to be upset by seeing a negative review, but they executed so well on the video, that the PR people will still have to acknowledge that it's just totally honest and well done.
@@aaronleverton4221 A better question is, why hasn't UA-cam done something about it? This one seems pretty easy to thwart, as far as these things go, and it's not like there's a shortage of examples.

I watch TV / UA-cam on a rectangular screen so having the '360' look has lost its novelty and just feels distorted. That said, Ryan held off overdoing the spinning effect so the camera was more used as a tool than being the event so this is a good example of how it can be used.

The fuel gauge visual under the ad break, to let us know how long till we get back to the video? Revolutionary. Not joking. HOW WAS A MOTORCYCLE REVIEW CHANNEL THE FIRST PLACE I ENCOUNTERED EDIT-CANDY SO USEFULLY VIEWER-FRIENDLY? Y'all are social media gods.
I had one of the first deposits, and then fully purchase, on the Metacycle. I cancelled mine due to timeline slipping. My circumstances required me to have transpiration soon rather than maybe later. The spec slipping was not a deal breaker for me. But the schedule slip was. The lack of communication between the customer and the producer was lacking and left many doubts. I want an affordable electric motorcycle, but I think that the market is still only for the upper crust that has disposable income, and, possibly more importantly, disposable time to wait.
Been watching this channel for so many years now. Literally the only channel I wait for to release videos, and watch it within hours of release. Always brings a smile to my face with the amazing direction, quirky punchlines and objective reviews. Keep it up F9.
I've been eyeing one of these for a while now- I don't believe they are $5000 anymore, more like $7000. The range and speed profile fit my daily commute perfectly with some to spare. I have the room to store it in the winter. Things I would change: Yes the extra taillight and plate thingy would be removed immediately and replaced with something more appealing. First things first- I would replace the handlebars with a pair of clip-on's, but that's just for me and my riding style.
Always the best! More than 50 years riding and more than 40 in computers and it's heartening to see such competence in young generations. Rarely disagree with you and when I do it's for the age thingy. At my age, I will probably never buy an electric bike, but I already have an electric trottinette that makes me feel like a kid again, so your take on the matter would be interesting. 🙂
I normally agree, but am a bit disappointed by the misinformation in the title and video. They're $6,500 but they put $5,000 in the title....and this isn't a very recent price hike, it's been like that for months and months before this video was posted.
How useful is the "void" for storage. The oem thing probably doesn't hold a lot, but I can also see someone like Ryan just stuffing a backpack in the hole. And using tie downs around that thick bar. Being able to see that your bag is still there would be reassuring.
Extraordinary filming, editing, script, audio, and overall production value make this , out of hundreds of thousands of channels on youtube, my absolute favorite... Keep up the great work!
I've been following this channel for a number of years now, and I wonder if I'm the only one who is surprised to see an ad in the video for the first time?
At $5,000 it is in the realm of being a useful, affordable second commuter bike. But going on their site now, it's $6,500, which starts getting harder to justify, given it's range limitations and charging time - it is only ever going to be useful as a commuter.
My concern is while at pricepoint, it makes sense for the shprt comings as any other of same price check. But some others of same price point are fixable of most short comings in comparison. I love that you do accurate reviews on these!
EVs and their batteries are not cheap. You take significant cost out by downsizing the battery. Downsize the battery and the useful life and range go down exponentially. A major cost element in the battery is BMS which is has an initial high fixed cost independent of battery size. This fixed cost of BMS does nothing to enhance the useable range. There is no free lunch. Pay more initially or pay substantially more in the long-run. If you think you can buy cheap EV motorcycle without major pitfalls then you really can't afford one unless you need a 20 mile or less commuter that is single passenger only with limited overall utility. Then on resale there are not many buyers who want the same or there are but likely at 1/3 or less than the price of new.
@@kannermw It is worth considering that EVs and ICEs cannot be easily compared price point to price point. Selecting a 5,000 dollar EV and a 5,000 dollar ICE are not equal. The ICE costs much more as it will greatly surpass the EV in long term ownership costs. You are absolutely right though there isn't a 'free lunch' you pay more for more or you pay less for less. There isn't going to be a magic bullet that suddenly fixes the range besides fundamentally changing the shape of a motorcycle to be more aerodynamic. Just like you can't buy a 3,000 dollar 50cc scooter and expect it to munch highways, it just can't. You gotta temper your expectations.
@@SirNarax Telling me to temper my expectations to accept a crappy more expensive EV technology is like suggesting I should pay more for a lessor product I don't want or like. EV motorcycle is a completely stupid idea for anything other than daily commuter. Majority of people in U.S. ride a motorcycle mostly for recreation not basic transportation to save money. When I ride a motorcycle it is typically on weekends and about 180 miles to 220 miles per day. I am not interested in sitting around for 6 or more hours waiting for a battery to charge in the middle of a trip to save at most $15-$20 for a day of riding which is peanuts. Maybe I leave knowing bad weather is coming or the weather starts to change and I want to get back before that happens. Time is way more valuable to me than money. I have purchased three new motorcycles since 2013 and never kept one more than 4.5 years. All mileage under 25K. In my personal use case and I imagine many others an EV motorcycle is a impractical money pit for morons.
@@kannermw That comment was for people capable of critical thought, with an open mind and weighing the pros and cons of a vehicle without getting emotional or irrational which you seem to be entirely incapable of. You don't even entirely know what you are talking about. You don't need to like something to view it fairly and with an open mind. This is just stupidity and not worth any more of my time.

That's some creative filmmaking and an engaging review. Kudos! Now, explain that first shot, I'm assuming a pull-through of the 360 camera from a parallel bike. Smoooooth!
$6,500 US.... or roughly $9,000 Canadian. Not counting whatever import duty they charge at the border......but likely pushing this bike to over $10,000....for a hub-motor electric motorcycle. For that price, I want and expect a frame-mounted motor. As always, you guys make amazing videos that let consumers decide for themselves. But until Sondors can provide Canadians with proper pricing, without worrying about DIY pricing, they aren't ready for prime-time. Thank you for making this awesome video presenting one of the most interesting machines on the market.
@@Joric78 Even then it would be close to $7000 Canadian with me doing all the importing myself and that's before any import duty. Also this means Buying a motorcycle from a company with no parts support which means within 2 years of the rear suspension having to deal with that giant heavy hub motor me watching to upgrade the suspension will be a challenge, as will a hub motor rebuild. If they had delivered a motorcycle with a frame mounted motor I think it would have been a legitimate competitor to motorcycles like the Honda CB300R but as this sits it's just not as good
Unfortunately the part that killed the Metacycle was the loss of the removable battery. Paper math said that it'd just barely get me to work every day. Figured I could pop out the battery and charge it at the office, and head home with a full charge each day. Add in the auxiliary battery and range anxiety is gone. Killing that feature killed interest for me... Hello, Ryvid Anthem
It's the beginning of a excellent idea..must get the recharge time down or sell the 2and battery at a good rate..and then just work on confort and hauling issues..
After a year and a half I got back on a bike and watching your channel, you still got it. Great video and entertaining with real words that are not watered down. Love your content.
Great review, thanks Had one pre ordered right when announced, kept through all the delays then went to see it at the LA expo and canceled right after. Too small and was rough around the edges. Was looking like it would never meet its specs and it seems that turned out true
Its chinese, did you really expect something different? They are incapable of making a quality product of their own design. Their first thought is to make it as cheap as possible, knowing that enough suckers will buy it. Proof? Anything on Amazon that is from a chinese supplier that is a knockoff of another product.
It's 100% Chinese made and marketed the way Chinese always do (lie), expect this and you will not be surprised in the future. People from western countries need to stop buying the absolutely cheapest components and start buying quality component they can afford from manufactures who don't have hundreds of slave labor camps making the parts or rapaciously mining, and dumping all the toxins into the ground, water and air. Zero manufactures excellent Electric machines.
Amazing vid. As ever the problems remains that $5k gas bikes have gotten so good. You just get so much more performance and build quality for your money.
Yeah, I was all about this bike initially but I just don’t trust Sondors. I’m in the market for a cheap commuter and I’d take a Himalayan at this price point.
I almost ordered one of these then decided against it because of the range issue. I'm 2 hours away from any mountains so I went with a KTM 390 Adventure instead.
Just found your channel, and this production quality, writing, and "acting" is phenomenal and seems extremely rare on youtube now. And even your actual review of the bike wasn't completely one sided. Great video.
I dont even own a motorcycle, never had one and always wanted a car, we could say I am a "car guy". But no car Channel has the same level of knowledge, amazing ideas and great shots(and editing) in their video. On top of that you are So consistent, that it is unreal. Amazing
This is exactly the type of electric motorbike I've been arguing for all along: affordable, adequate power, usable range, exchangeable battery.. it overcomes the obsession of electric vehicles having blistering performance just because they can. And yet I'm left wanting more - more range, especially. This will be a great stepping stone to a range of bikes that are genuinely usable and meet the needs of a variety of riders. As it stands, this bike would be fine for my commute to work - but it doesn't have enough range to get to the other side of town and back. That's a pretty big limitation for most of us.
I have an idea: where you have the option to have a storage compartment in that hole in the frame, make the option for a second battery for those that want extended range
I feel similarly! We even made a video on why these cheap, minimal e-motorcycles are the solution to our slow adoption of e-motorcycles: ua-cam.com/video/O2zlYpy6QCM/v-deo.html . I credit Sondors with filling the gap, and if they improve on the Metacycle in Gen 2 and 3 it has the potential to be a serious disruptor. ~RF9
okay this is interesting, I live in the Netherlands, and we have a total different view of distance to be travelled. With this motorcycle I could drive through 3 medium sized cities (enschede-hengelo-almelo) AND back without charging once. How big are your towns that you can only travel one way in a town?? Is it very rural or something?
RF9 is a master in providing pure information as the meat of an entertainment burrito - my time is never wasted watching any of his videos. Another fantastic example here.
Your channel came before than my first bike. I was 100% sure it was going to be an electric, a city commuter. Sondors was one of the options, but I end up getting a Efun Pusa (Vespa replica) 80km real range, 85km top speed, 0-50/km/h in 3.7s and a trully removable batery with 8y warranty (on a 60%capacity) for 3680€. It might not look as cool as the Sondors, but looks aren't all, side by side on specs makes Sondors blush. Anyway, good review, good video, love your channel!
@Stem Artin ofc practicality is a personal thing, i wanted to store 2 helmets in the bike (so i needed a suitcase and a confy passenger sear, so enduro was not a real option, although it looks way cooler 😁😇
I love electric motorcycles, but I would not hold your breath for the Damon. Say what you will about Sondors at least their product exists in the real world.
@@Felix-tp8ch o k a y? Who cares what you find 'not cool'. We will have to make that switch eventually like it or not. Oil is a very limited supply and burning it takes away the opportunity to ride for our children. EV is a normal motorcycle.
@@waxdood With current usage we are expected to run out of fuel within the next 50 years or less. It will be more than that because as oil becomes harder and harder to find it becomes more and more expensive. Lithium from mines will last somewhere in the next 100 years. Both of these things can be artificially manufactured. Oil and it's oil based products such as plastic can be made out of things like Sugar Cane. Lithium can be harvested from Brine, natural or artificial. But it doesn't make sense to artificially create oil as a fuel source. Unless 100% of the grid is renewable and there is a massive excess in electricity, using power to create power to be burned isn't clever. Not that we have a choice as we are running out of all fossil fuels not just oil. Even if you did want to mass produce artificial oil hydrogen makes more sense. Then on top of that if 100% of the power grid was renewable battery powered vehicles make more sense not less. Lithium can not only be artificially produced but also recycled. It isn't which sucks but all this combined makes the argument that "we are going to run out of lithium" as an argument for the continued use of fossil fuels is an inaccurate one and couldn't be further from the truth. The only fossil fuel that will last anywhere near as long as the Lithium supply is coal, which sucks.
Yeah, just like almost every other comment I'm very satisfied with your content and high professional level of content creation! I was waiting for that subjective conclusion that never came. Great content! IMO, it’s a mobility scooter that can *actually* hit 60 and look great doing it.
I pre-ordered one of these in January 2022, and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. The reason I bought it was because it was: 1: An electric vehicle (right when gas when reaching an all time high) 2: Cheap (relatively) 3: Looks like an electric bicycle which means I can get away with storing inside my workplace which was downtown. Overall I'm happy with what Fortnine has shown since the only deal breaker for me was going to be the price. Also last time I checked they raised the price to $6k (actually $6.5k now), but when I got it was still 5k which I find worth the money. I have a cruiser and a sports bike so I have choices and just for getting around town or getting away with tying it to a tree for free parking downtown is worth it in my opinion.
Each and every video from you makes me feel like a child on Christmas day again! You guys are awesome and deserve a lot of cookies (yes, I suspect someone is holding the camera too, although that grabbing-the-camera-mid-corner scene made me wonder). Would you ever come to Sweden, I would personally greet you at the airport with the biggest box of cookies you've ever seen. Hey, I could almost even consider letting you ride my bike.
This video highlights some of the shortcomings of electric motorcycles. They always seem... unfinished in some way. But the potential is there and I'm ready for electric motorcycles to become the norm. No more oil and filter changes, no valve adjustments, no noise, no emissions regulations, and no shifting. Sounds like a win to me! I'm hungry for a street legal dual sport that rides like an electric dirt bike, and it's only a matter of time.
Insightful and entertaining, as always. As an old geezer who rode for 20 years, took a 15 year break, and has now got back into biking, is there any chance that there could be a video for not-so newbies? Something helpful about how things have changed in the last few years and what to look out for in terms of clothing, bikes, general tips? For instance, armour or abs, etc. We never had that in our day, where armour was the accumulated padding from last week’s lunches and ABS was a measure of how good your brake control was.
Bloody Brilliant - as usual. This was so good I watched it twice ! Informative / creative / well shot and funny as hell. Well done ! Still laughing about the removable battery comments!
Cool bike, I wish they came with 2 batteries that could be put in either series or parallel configuration allowing choice between extra range or power.
alas, while that works for AA/AAA batteries and simple lights, it gets more complicated when you're talking MOSFETS and switching-mode power supplies. The controller is built for a particular voltage range, top-to-bottom. putting two packs in series doubles the voltage, but keeps the max current the same. Putting them in parallel keeps the voltage the same, but doubles max current. It effectively comes out in the wash, with parallel being easier to accommodate electronically.

7000 removes this off the table immediately. They got greedy.
You saved 2K and have a real motorcycle with an actual, useable range. Smart move.

Yep while I'd want an electric motorcycle, it's not going to be this one. I'll stick with my CB500F for now.

aaaaaand they're gone. they've stopped paying the chinese factory who built the bikes and in turn they stopped delivering Sondors.
Why buy multiple batteries for these things when you will be using only one of them at a time, or only sporadically?
batts start loosing charge over draining and refilling. using on batt for many appliances shortens it's lifespan significantly

$6,500 US.... or roughly $9,000 Canadian. Not counting whatever import duty they charge at the border......but likely pushing this bike to over $10,000....for a hub-motor electric motorcycle. For that price, I want and expect a frame-mounted motor.

@@Joric78 Even then it would be close to $7000 Canadian with me doing all the importing myself and that's before any import duty.

@@Theroadtoawe that, as mentioned on the video, sondors is… not a good company to give your money
@@Theroadtoawe Bike = nice. Company = specious.
I've already studied this bike. After watching your video I decided why not. This would be perfect for commuting to work(18 miles round trip) and for local errands.I have 2 "traditional" motorcycles so this would be a good alternative.I went to the website which bragged about a $5k price.I hit the buy link and all of a sudden it's $6500,WTF.Needless to say they just lost a sale.
Yes 5000 was entry price. The low cost has been made up for by shifty company practices.
Oh, man. I guess they really are rotten to the core.
Excellent production, almost like the OG Top Gear back and forth with call and response; you earned a sub!
I was waiting for that subjective conclusion that never came. Great content! IMO, it’s a mobility scooter that can *actually* hit 60 and look great doing it.
I pre-ordered one of these in January 2022, and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. The reason I bought it was because it was:
1: An electric vehicle (right when gas when reaching an all time high)
2: Cheap (relatively)
3: Looks like an electric bicycle which means I can get away with storing inside my workplace which was downtown.
That ad was amazing!
I’ve never seen such a perfect integration.
You and me both. I can't find anything that can replace my xr650r without some kinda compromise, but electric convenience would be great
Your presentation style, editing and production remind me of the good old days of Top Gear (UK) and im here for it
Love your shows - excellent, balanced review as always.
Luke McAdam is a master of the craft. This video was expertly done
Best motorcycling channel, hands down. I'm so glad I found you. Greetings from Spain.
Wow that's a really interesting and viable motorcycle, I am so excited to see a delivery to my house for my brand new KTM 1290R!
My thoughts too.😁
