I love Gabe's never ending, run on stories that have no punchline in the end while he walks aimlessly through a labyrinth of back alleyways. Gabe 100% invented this style of vlogging and it is his signature style.
Next trip to Sri Lanka I will visit Haputale again along with Horton Plains/Worlds End. Also the beaches on the east coast which were inaccessible during the war. I go back cause I love Sri Lanka and out of nostalagia in combination with the Maldives which I have never been to. Bangkok is top notch for me. It is so diverse. Been there 30+ times without having seen it all although I am starting to run out of things. 🙂
From Ella i would have gone to Wellawaya (long straight road) and then joined the expressway - lovely flat 4 lane highway through the paddy fields. But understand you wanted to see more of Sri lanka! Colombo is an interesting capital - its easy to write off but there is more to see than meets the eye. For example the lovely wide leafy roads as laid out by the British, the cricket pitches, the old charm of the fort, the art shops and cafe’s. You need someone to show you round Colombo, it’s hard to do through a guide book. Let me show you round next time!
Thank you,Gabriel, for your videos, which I had the opportunity to share with you throughout the year.May you succeed in realizing your travel plans in the coming year, in good health and well-being.
Nuwara Elia is really interesting in my opinion. Different veggies and climat, almost a feeling of old England. The road there is very beautiful in the mountains. Candy is kinda fine but not that different from other bigger cities. And Colombo has alot to offer, especially if you wanna splurge alittle. Very diverse. Love Sri Lanka, the things I mainly don’t like are things like traffic, many street dogs in awful condition, general treatment of many animals. And lack of good beer! The owner of the Lion pub/restaurant i Nuwara Eila told me it is very hard having good beers there since they can,t import due to like Carlsberg and Budweiser (?) has all the import rights or something.
Right on Gabe. Sri Lanka is on my list to visit. Ko Pha Ngan - in the 90s we used to go Bottle Beach on the northern side of the island. Amazing paradise and could only get there by boat. But apparently they built a road to it now😢
Been following for years and like your relaxed, honest and authentic style. A true explorer Gabe. Safe travels home, and I hope you get to decompress and just enjoy being home and all that entails (routine, home cooked meals, and familiar loving faces of family and friends)
Even though you are an experienced traveler, you've underestimated traveling in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka maybe small but you cant just hop from one town to another easily. It's no wonder you got stressed out. Even a local wouldn't go to Nuwaraeliya and then leave for another city the next day, that would just be too tiring. You need to take into account the humid weather as well. You've definitely missed out on the sights of Colombo though. If you do come back, I would suggest taking much more time to explore. Great series though in the places you did capture. I used to live in Sri Lanka and even I've not been to some of the historical temples you visited.
Thank you for the video and for the thoughts shared. I am a little surprised by your ignoring Colombo, but I trust you and I accept your opinion. I wish you a Happy and a Successful New Year!
Too bad you couldn't spare a day or two for Kandy. It's lots more interesting and less hectic than Colombo. The Buddist sites up north around Anurahdapura are outstanding. Hope you go back some day.
Lmfao my guy really said a day or 2 for Kandy. Kandy was trash. Rude people and harassment from tuk tuk drivers everywhere. I wish I skipped Kandy entirely, wasted an entire day there.
after weeks of desease finally able to look your video... and bangkok!!! have been there more than 20,years ago. thank you so much, you have brought me so many remindings of this so loud and fantastic city, all these temples, colours, the poeple and..and..and.. am so happy thanks to you. have a healthy and happy new year and thank you ❤ for all the work you are doing for us, so that we can travel through the world sitting at home.
If you exit Khao San Road (police station end) and turn right and then walk straight ahead for less than one kilometer over a klong there are two sois on the right hand-side (Sois 2 and 4 Samsen Road) which are interesting. A lot of simple rustic restaurants with outside seating. A bit like how Khao San Road was twenty - thirty - years ago. Increasingly popular with travellers. Definitely worth checking out.
Gabriel , What a rough couple of days ! So traveling is not all fun and great food ! Hope your next travels are smooth , and nice rides and rooms ! Take care !
Been watching you since a few years back when I was checking out your video on Malta, since I was about to move there. Now I'm in Bangkok old town realizing I'm probably a few hundred yards from you right now. Mad
Just got back from two months in Thailand and flew home from Bangkok. So glad she went on the shoulder season. Our son is still there saying it’s getting busier by the day as the snowbirds world over arrive
Walking through those little streets gives a simple and pure vibes of Bangkok life. If I'm going to be lost there? That's probably just Bangkok's way of saying "Welcome to the adventure!"
It was a long weekend and places like Nuwaraeliya Colombo tend to get crowded with locals during such breaks...n two weeks is not enough for sri lanka.
You were almost at the famous Golden Mount. I saw it just beyond you in your video but you turned the corner. Anywayz, Have a Happy New Year Mr Gabriel Traveler. I enjoy your adventures so very much
In such situations, i would suggest to choose an overnight train ride, the sleeper one, i do that when i want to avoid long routes with noise and loud crowds, just take a sleeper train, either a 2nd AC or even 3rd AC over general compartment, and then its lights off after 11pm, so just hit the bed on ur bunk and get to sleep for then the next 6-7 hrs.. i do that in India and did that in Vietnam as well..
Oh man! I didn't realize you skipped so much! Yeah definitely make a return trip and take the Tea Train to Kandy from Ella next time! Believe it or not, we got to Ella via Tuktuk from Mirissa! haha That was crazy enough! Got a flat on the way and paid for the driver to get a new one. Felt bad. Once in Ella hike the Ella Rock trail. There is a man at the top selling some delightful tea he makes up there for all the hikers. Beware of the hiking guide scam where a dude appears out of no where wanting to help you. He "knows a short cut, or better way" then proceeds to lead you through the farms and asks you to donate to the families, then asks for money after he shows you up the same trail everyone is walking. Once done with Ella, you MUST take that Tea Train to Kandy going through all the tea fields and hills. It will be the most epic train ride of your life. Lots of stops at each little village. Men selling some nice warm shrimp biscuits wrapped in little hand folded pockets from their children's old homework. Warm tea at every train station stop. It's just magical. Get lost in it.
Love getting to walk along listening to your stories. I don’t understand why the trains allow such overcrowding makes the ride not only miserable for the riders/standers/door hanger but also dangerous . That’s messed up. Glad you made it .❤
I have pictured it all better than a video. Not many people will spend 100 times more to get point A to B. Next time around take express busses that run on expressways or ask your taxi driver to take expressways and give him money for the tolls. Thanks for visiting Sri Lanka and showing me some places such as Buduruwagala that I haven't even heard of.

If not available second class open tickets are the best option. It's not crowded usually. And people love to stand on the doorsteps and enjoy in a way. I was asked to provide an onward ticket when I checked in for my flight to Sri Lanka. That's the first time it's happened in a while, maybe since going to Costa Rica. So i booked a flight on the spot to Bangkok.

As a viewer I am not bored of your shirts. But I guess it will be a nice change for you, when you get some new ones. What are you doing with your old clothing?
i think perhaps you are jumping the gun on your take on Columbo since you usually refrain from ultra urban areas, depends on each individual's preference, I am guessing. 🍺🍷🥃😂👍
It's quite possible that I didn't see the more interesting parts of the city. I just drove to my hotel, walked around there and then drove to the airport, so I didn't explore the city properly. If I go back to Sri Lanka I'll probably give it another try.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Yes sir, China pretty much owns Sri Lanka by large debts that the country has borrowed from China mainly to allow Chinese firms to develop Columbo mainly and the rest of the country to a lesser degree. So you will get a taste of ultra-modern cities such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bejing, etc. unfolding before your shocked eyes in Columbo. Wow, it'll be surely worth another visit, looking forward to it, Gabe.
While its fun to walk through it, id say the Khao San Road area is one of the worst places to stay in Bangkok. It used to be cool I suppose in like the 90s where it really was backpacker central and it had its own vibe, but now its just mostly generic shops and bars with tourist prices to match. Also a problem is thats its quite far from any BTS or MRT station making it inconvenient to explore the rest of the city, and also rather inconvenient to get there from the airport(s) . Probably my favorite area is anywhere near Lumphini park, Benchakitti park and the raised walkway in between in the downtown area of the city. This is a great area because of all the green spaces and believe me, youll want those because traffic is relentless and the air quality is not great in the city. Its also close to things like the huge Central World mall which is great if you need a break from the heat and it has an amazing food court Also, you are right in the middle of the city with BTS and MRT stations nearby, so even if you are mostly interested in the old town, you can just take the MRT to Sam Yot station or something and it will only take you like 10 mins or so.
I largely agree with you. I went with a friend for a month in thailand about 7 years ago and we stayed near to khaosan. We saw the Grand palace and then relocated out of bangkok heading north along the train seeing all the wonderful things you can see in the mountain villages... It really transformed the way I thought of the world.
Khao Sarn Road is awful. I went there once to meet a girl and that was the only time I went there. We had a very fun night but it was generic tatty bars and drunk backpackers. I prefer the backstreets of Chinatown for a more authentic experience.

Why not visit Myanmar next after 9 years, the changes would be wonderful to document.
I'd love to, but it sounds like it's risky to go there now with the current government.
One night in Bangkok!
Cattle car experience 😅
Have fun can you have a chang for me Ty n happy new year
While its fun to walk through it, id say the Khao San Road area is one of the worst places to stay in Bangkok.
💯
I never visit Khao San road. Just like you I think it's an awful area of Bangkok
I also avoid it. The area is nice but so touristy. By the way it's pronounced Nurelia, the place in the SriLankan highlands.
Khao Sarn Road is awful. I went there once to meet a girl and that was the only time I went there. We had a very fun night but it was generic tatty bars and drunk backpackers. I prefer the backstreets of Chinatown for a more authentic experience.
