I was born and raised in Bangkok. I only know Khlong Toei slum by name and have often driven past it, but I’ve never walked into the community. Thank you for showing me what it’s like inside.
I left Thailand 32 years ago, it is really changed! I came back 5 years ago, I could not remember how to get around. You have a nice guide who speaks very good English. Thank you for showing this tour.
Look at these people… even if they are living in a slum, I can see that they have the dignity they should have as human beings. They maintain their living areas with respect. It’s clean and neat. There is education for the young, water and electricity. At least they have the avenue for progression and exit out of poverty. I can see that foundations and communities are truly helping them out of poverty. And I am sure the government is doing their part as well. Wish this was the case in places like India. Hats off to the Thai people!.
I moved to Bangkok four years ago, at the age of 19, and lived in one of the wealthiest areas of Khlong Toei. Although I had heard about the nearby slums, I had never seen them in person. For a long time, I didn’t truly appreciate the privileged life I had. That changed one day when I had to take a motorcycle taxi, and the rider unexpectedly drove me through an area that reminded me of the slums I’d only heard about. Seeing the reality of life there completely shifted my perspective. I realized how many opportunities I had compared to others and how much I had taken for granted. It made me think deeply about my own life. I’d always felt like I wasn’t good enough, but in that moment, I understood how fortunate I was. I promised myself I wouldn’t waste the opportunities I’d been given. The thought of losing everything and falling from a high-rise apartment to a small hut terrified me and motivated me to push myself harder. Through sheer determination and hard work, I achieved success by the age of 23. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’ve learned the importance of gratitude and resilience in building a better life.
great video - I have walked around the slums a while back - interesting how friendly everyone is with no hint of desperation compared to other slums around the world
I'm Australian. I lived in a 'slum' corridor at the back of a house in Java for 6 months. It was great! I loved it! No stress, rent was sfa. Tonsssss of community contact and laughs... I got back to Australia, and all I saw was sad-robots leaving their McMansions scurrying off to slavery for the whole day. F that...
I’m a high school student and have volunteered at the slum and taught the kids English at Mercy Center! The people are kind, and the children always have such bright smiles on their faces :)
People in the Khlong Toei slums are examples of the Thai way of thinking and lifestyle. They are poor but not hopeless and still have a smile. They have changed their goal of creating value in life from seeking wealth to seeking friendship and friends...even though they have no money, they are not lonely and do not lack help.
They have some money but most likely earning minimum income and work in Bangkok and most likely have no saving. If they have no money, no house, they will be on the street. There are homeless out there. Most of them can't afford a proper apartment and they just don't want to move out or move back to the country side as getting lowest income is still better than working in the farm. In the farm you get way less.
people in developing asian countries are like that. i think i could speak the same from other developing nations but based on my experience, people who live in asia are the most optimistic
speaks volumes about Thai society that even the poorest keep themselves and their children so clean despite the intense heat/humidity, as ever Gabi your insight is sublime, stay well and a happy new year to you and ploy, best wishes always

Its great to see the kids smiling, warms the heart, hopefully the future holds many opportunities for them. I also hope the plan to build a condo and house these people is granted, it seems like the better option of them all.
Gabi, your videos are so inspiring and thoughtful. You show the good ( mostly), the bad and the ugly with such compassion. I think of the young children here in the US with their toys, cell phones, video game etc, and see the children of the slums with nothing and yet they look so happy, joyful and eager to learn. God bless them and may they find a way to prosper and be happy. Thank you so much for all you do.

Hi Gabi. You've outdone yourself once again. Your compassionate nature shinning through. Such an eye-opening video as I've only heard about the rich parts of Bangkok. Thanks for showing us how the other half lives. It may be cramped but its clean and people look very happy. Looking forward to your next video. Keep well and stay safe. Much love🙏😍
Such a heartwarming kindergarten, the kids are soo cute and the school environment is really clean and well maintained, doesn't feel like a school in a slum, to be honest. I wish lots and lots of happiness and bright future for all of them.
I'm Thai and I love watching how people live in different countries. But this is the first time I've seen slum community content in my own country. Thank you very much.
Welcome back! As a retiree in Viet Nam, I'm looking into Blue Dragon (more oriented to stop human trafficking). Sometimes one can feel so helpless, the gap between rich and poor keeps getting wider everywhere. Looking forward to your next video!
I love that place. I've been there many times. Used to be a great Muay Thai gym located under one of the expressways that I trained at. The fighters there were tough as nails. Walking through Khlong Toey at night is an experience in itself
Hi,Gabi. Great video very very interesting to watch.I never knew of the slum area of Bangkok before,as always just passed through the airport going to Phuket. The people even though they live there in the slum area good people, some working and, seems happy with what they have, obviously they would like a nice home but,for now they are contented. Thankyou Gabi, for sharing and,hi to Ploy.Sawadee kap😊🙏🙏
Dude awesome video. Those kids look so sweet. Wishing them the best life and hope those who are in power recognize videos like this when making zoning decisions
1. Funny to read, many tourists don't know about this area. But they have met the people who lives there plenty of times, as many of them are the same people, selling "delicious streetfood" in other areas of Bangkok including Sukhumvit. 2. I fear an "accidental fire" will happen there soon, same as it happened in slums of Manila little over a month ago. Many parties have expressed interest in building properties there, but it's impossible as long the slum exists. 3. A lot of smiles there, which is of course wonderful and admirable, as they very much live in the moment - they simply exist. Unfortunately this "live in the moment" mentality that keeps them up today, is also what keeps Thailand stagnant. 4. Last, but not least, thank you for an interesting and well made video. 🙏
Unfortunately, sooner or later this will happen... I'm not Thai... I'm Brazilian, but the way these people act is the same all over the world... How many slum have I seen simply disappear accidentally in Brazil and people lose the little they had in their miserable lives... and years later luxury condominiums appear in their place... Unfortunately, these people are doomed... I have no hope and I don't believe in miracles.
As a farang in Thailand I normally try to stay clear of rough places like this but for being a slum area it looks surprisingly clean & safe. The people there also seemed really friendly, as they always are all over Thailand ♥ I doubt going slumming in other parts of the world would be so nice or such a good idea for a white foreigner...
They are no different from you; they are simply regular people. Their income is low. However, that does not diminish its humanity. similar to Native Americans these have a culture and set of rules, but these are permanently altered by the presence of white people who believe they are superior.
@@suliwutsaengsophit738 Yeah, they live in a prime location right in the middle of the city so I get it if the government want to take this away from them. It's a sad reality but I hope they will be relocated to a better place not to far away from the city where they still can make a living & be a part of the society so they don't end up creating an even worse slum outside the city where they have nothing to do other than resort to criminal activities just to stay alive.
Thai people are probably the best in the world! It doesn't matter what they are always trying to help you! And the cleanliness also in extreme conditions is impressive, it shows how hard they work and they care!
This bought tears to my eyes, didn’t know about this and I have been Thailand 4 times. I love Thailand and will look more into this to see how I can help. Thank you
Thank you for your concern.. However, this community will disappear. This expensive land will definitely be reclaimed. You come to Thailand and spend happily. It is like helping them indirectly because they may work in the tourism sector or be a security guard at the hotel where you stay.
As Thai people who just moved to stay around this area, I find it very interesting area as well as you presented in this vdo. I never had a chance to explore in slum as a woman I feel a bit terrified. anyway, thank you so much to make this documentary it's quite interesting to see this part of BKK.
There are slums in Thailand? I never saw them as slums. More like villages in the city. They don't seem dangerous or desperate, just not at all like other places; Delhi, Rio, or Manila, for instance. Walk around and you will only find friendly people, and the rents are somewhat controlled by the Port Authority, so they are not disenfranchised. Just poor or immigrant people.
@@Rommel-f2qWhy people cant mention Philippines here??? no one from India or Brazil will complain if someone mention them in this nice video. The slums of Bangkok have dignity and the slums of India have culture and the slums of Brazil are iconic. The slums of manila have the world famous pagpag.
I am very happy to see that your inner light has come back. This is a very well done video showing how certain classes of people have to live day to day. 🙏 What a difference 1-2 km make.
Thank you for wonderful visiting of you ,Mr Gabi. You also did the thing which is touch my heart. People will see how different of these areas. Thank you so much 🥰😇🥰

Surprisingly, watch the recent news from the gov. about the casino plan (so called entertainment complex thingy), totally have no clue that they already selected the area Khlong Toei for their mega project. Thanks for the tour, I am a fan of Kru Prateep's work
Thai people are Buddhists. Everyone has been instilled since childhood to be a good person, to be humble, to smile, to respect elders, and to keep the country clean. Thailand has laws to punish people who litter and make the country dirty. These things make Thai people more disciplined than their neighbors. But in Thailand, there are still some people who do not follow the law, and there are also some bad people.
There are many laws that prohibit many things, yet, there are still many illegal activities that are going on in plain sight. Ex: Prostitution, drugs, vapes, traffic, and overall corruptions from the lowest level to the highest level of the government. And yeah, the Thais are so humble that whenever they have a bit of money, they go and buy a brand new Benz (with the red license plate). 🤣
Hi Gabi. Sad to see that humans are subjected to such pathetic living conditions. However, it is pleasing to note that the little ones are afforded the opportunity opportunity of educating themselves. This is the only way out of their sad living conditions. God bless these little children ❤❤❤
What an interesting, eye-opening upload. Thank you. I love Thai people, they are very hospitable. I lived on Koh Samui and enjoyed it so much, I'd like to go back
lol, bringing up the US for no reason at all, what is wrong with yal, thailand is far too protected people need to expose the true reality of that place
Great Gabi, very eye opening your video, it is sad how a luxury area can be next to do poor slums; and be ignored for people full of luxury. Ef every rich family adopted 4 families from the slums it will be no more poor areas in that city. Thank you for sharing your stories are so meaningful! 🙏♥️🫶❤️🥰
My city in Canada is more dangerous (crime) and 16 times smaller. Bangkok is full of never ending surprises. Thank you for the videos - you are a modern journalist and your work is important!
Thank you for exposing another side of our small country, which is the Klong Toey slum, where the government has almost no role in developing or fixing anything. This is different from the local government agencies that are trying to make the lives of the people in the slums better (I was one of the people who attended the local government meetings 2-3 years ago).
not all, every country have kind and bad people, have you heard the news recently of the taxi driver in thailand that slash his passenger face and need to undergo many stitches

I am actually quite surprised most tourists don't know about this since a part of it is next to the skywalk between Benchakitti and Lumphini park. Very hard to miss. I suggest them to take a look and support their little businesses by going down the stairs and buy a water or something while walking there 🙂
@@FarangMike Not really. K long Toey is much worse. By the skywalk, those are real houses that are just small and densely located. Majority of Klongtoey is just shacks.

Malaysia way better than Thailand full of sins.
@Muhdayyan2024 no just my experience , i speak bahasa and used to live in Indonesia and have alot of indonesian friends but they were a full on culture ! 👍❤️
Slums but the people are so dignified and spotlessly clean i love Bangkok and the Thai people are the most welcoming and friendly people in the world
People around the world , they are nice the same .,
This is my favorite area in Bangkok. The people here are so kind, the amount of times I have got drunk inside a train track shanty house, its amazing

🙏🏻🙏🏻
Those kids made me cry tears of joy
Hope they're growing well and have better life
Thank you Kru Pratheep for her dedication
Thank you for our young Thai and K Krue Prateep (her name means light of hope !!) giving interview to Gabi; I am a fan of you guys kha.
I love that place. I've been there many times. Used to be a great Muay Thai gym located under one of the expressways that I trained at. The fighters there were tough as nails. Walking through Khlong Toey at night is an experience in itself
It's good to see that despite the poverty in the surrounding areas schools are well equipped.
Hi,Gabi.
Great video very very interesting to watch.I never knew of the slum area of Bangkok before,as always just passed through the airport going to Phuket. The people even though they live there in the slum area good people, some working and, seems happy with what they have, obviously they would like a nice home but,for now they are contented.
Thankyou Gabi,for sharing and,hi to Ploy.Sawadee kap😊🙏🙏
The Thai guy is very good in speaking English
hope this people have total support in the near future!
Absolutely fabulous video Gabi.
Thanks Pat 🙏🏻 your make great videos about Bangkok 😉
Both of you are my Fav.❤

But the residents would not want tourist walking through their community.
As a farang in Thailand I normally try to stay clear of rough places like this but for being a slum area it looks surprisingly clean & safe.
The people there also seemed really friendly, as they always are all over Thailand ♥
I doubt going slumming in other parts of the world would be so nice or such a good idea for a white foreigner...
They are no different from you; they are simply regular people. Their income is low. However, that does not diminish its humanity. similar to Native Americans these have a culture and set of rules, but these are permanently altered by the presence of white people who believe they are superior.
@@rayodesoona750these people living like this has absolutely nothing to do with white people. What nonsense
Many Thais tend to, stupidly, put the farangs on the pedestal. They tend to treat the whities better than other Thais.
I appreciate your love to poor people who live in slums of big cities. Hats off to you Gabi the Great 🙏👏💓
Thai people are probably the best in the world!
Thank you for showing the slums of Thailand.. it’s always been a hidden mystery
Thank you Gabi for this video!
Thank you for sharing your experiences, always extremely interesting
🙏🏻
Very interesting video! Hope their conditions improve!
By the way, the guide is a cutie! ❤
Whatever you say, that place is absolutely slums. Stop mentioning the Philippines on this kind of video.
@@Rommel-f2q they love to show poverty sides cuz that makes them feel better and luckiest person
@@Rommel-f2q In order for thailand to be relevant, they have to deflect to Philippines, thats the theme of thailand fanboys
So True Thai slum looks better than those citied you mention (Delhi, Rio, or Manila)
As always great video...
Thank you for showing the world this. For those who have traveled to Bangkok, Thailand and never seen Khlong Toei, it is exactly how this video is.
Relly cool and important video
By myself i stay often in bkk ... also most of the time in sukhumvit but i never know that befor ! ☝🏼👀
I am very happy to see that your inner light has come back. This is a very well done video showing how certain classes of people have to live day to day. 🙏 What a difference 1-2 km make.
I used to live in Khlong Toei, but not in a slum. The current Khlong Toei slum is much better than in the past.
Thank you for wonderful visiting of you ,Mr Gabi. You also did the thing which is touch my heart.
People will see how different of these areas.
Thank you so much 🥰😇🥰
Wow Montessori school system, thats incredible! I studied in Montessori schools back in my kindergarten and first 2 yrs of high school and tbh its one of the most expensive schools.

I’m editing my Khlong Toei vid now, this a great drone footage and story angle. Good stuff. Respect
Thank you for sharing your experience, it was very enlightening.
Surprisingly, watch the recent news from the gov. about the casino plan (so called entertainment complex thingy), totally have no clue that they already selected the area Khlong Toei for their mega project. Thanks for the tour, I am a fan of Kru Prateep's work
Thank you in the name of Thai people to show this to the world . , it’s actually a heaven for the rich but hell for the poor.😢

Great Gabi, very eye opening your video, it is sad how a luxury area can be next to do poor slums; and be ignored for people full of luxury. Ef every rich family adopted 4 families from the slums it will be no more poor areas in that city. Thank you for sharing your stories are so meaningful! 🙏♥️🫶❤️🥰
Yes that’s very true

Thank you for exposing another side of our small country, which is the Klong Toey slum, where the government has almost no role in developing or fixing anything. This is different from the local government agencies that are trying to make the lives of the people in the slums better (I was one of the people who attended the local government meetings 2-3 years ago).
I was there 2018-2019• Wera nice people with smile 😎👍
I will make sure to visit this place especially the kindergarten ❤ thanks for sharing Gabi.

Every square inch of Thailand, we have people taking care of and developing it for the good future of the next generation of people.
You are delusional.
The Thai people are beautiful and kind.
They are not good people those people are bad people
not all, every country have kind and bad people, have you heard the news recently of the taxi driver in thailand that slash his passenger face and need to undergo many stitches
You a have special talent and you portray things as they are. I was so impressed with the first vlog that I saw from your channel about the scam call centres in Mynamar. You have a real talent and I'm now a subscriber of your channel. Keep up the good work my friend and keep things real. Well done. Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏🏻
I am actually quite surprised most tourists don't know about this since a part of it is next to the skywalk between Benchakitti and Lumphini park. Very hard to miss.
I suggest them to take a look and support their little businesses by going down the stairs and buy a water or something while walking there 🙂
You are wrong. Kong Toey slum isn’t next to the sky walk. It’s south of Rama 4 road.
@ different slum same idea :)
@@FarangMike Not really. K long Toey is much worse. By the skywalk, those are real houses that are just small and densely located. Majority of Klongtoey is just shacks.
I’m always so heartbroken whenever I see how some people have to live and struggle just to stay alive. 😢
