    In Public school I used to walk past a corner lot where they owned an Irish Setter. She was beautiful and so gentle. Every day I would go by her house and talk to her through the fence. One day her owner saw me and allowed me to come into the backyard to meet her. She was thrilled to see me on her side of the fence. She bounded to me and when she jumped up to greet me, her paws sat on my shoulders and she looked me right in the eyes.
    Then she gave me a big, slobbery kiss. From that day forward, I had permission to enter with the promise that the gate would always be securely locked behind me whether I was in or out. I saw her five days a week, four times a day ( went home for lunch. )
    One day in 6th grade, she wasn't in the yard. Rare, but ok. Two days, three. I couldn't bear it. I knew something wasn't right. Knocking on the door, I was informed by the owner that Sheila, the Setter had passed. He thanked me because his kids had just moved out over a year period just before I met her. My arrival, it seemed, had made her think life was still fun. I had not known when I met her that she was already ten years old. He said sixteen years was a good life for a dog. She had developed cataracts in the last year and without being told, I had changed our visits from running around the half acre lot to more quiet, sitting under the tree and rubbing her as I read.
    I have loved this breed ever since. Plus, they look like the tall cousins of long haired daschunds who seem to share the same colouring. My Grandma had one named Cindy. Love them, too. ( actually under 5 years I went to all my neighbours and offered to walk their dogs for free. I just wanted time with the dogs )

      A lovely story, made me tear up. She filled your days and your memory with happiness, you brightened up the last years of Sheila's life. And you both have brightened up mine.
      Thank you for sharing.

    We first met the Irish in Northern Rhodesia, Zambia, Irish Flames Aster was the name, we called her Kruger. After a couple of litters we moved to Rhodesia proper in Salisbury the Capital
    we imported dogs from UK and RSA and turned out many beautiful dogs until our last Champion died in 2018 and we moved to Wales. There is NOTHING like an Irish Setter. No child is as safe as they are with an Irish. God gave a great gift to the world with the Setter.

    We named our setter......"Rusty"......he was a perfect combination of character and colour......! A wonderful dog......he used to leap over our back fence and trot down to the nearby RCMP Musical Ride training centre and join their herd of horses in their paddock.....he chasing after them and they chasing after him......the only problem with that was that Rusty was, at the end of their frolicking, he was covered up to his "knees" with their deposited "poop" and had to be hosed off......! He just loved to visit them and the herd of RCMP mounts sure loved to chase after him.....! They got along really well.....!

    We are on our 8th and 9th rescued Irish Setter, Rosie and Rudy. We love this bread. Great personalities albeit a little goofy at times. Rudy talk and slender at 85 lbs. Rosie a bit shorter and broader at 90 lbs. Great with children but love their attention when first seeing them. Love running and rides in the car. Very attentive until they see a squirrel or rabbit. Then becomes chaotic. Fantastic dogs.

    My favorite breed as well... I had the most beautiful S friend and she chased a Harley Davidson in October and was only 4 and a 1/2 years old, I was so happy after she got hit that she did not die little did I know that she was bleeding internally and passed away with 15 minutes at the animal hospital. It crushed me, I used to thank her on a daily basis, as she sat next to me in my vehicle, for being my best friend. I have two new irish setter pups now, and I love them both but neither could ever replace my Zola, she took my heart with her. Although my 2 new puppies are very active and one of them is very very misbehaved, All I can advise to you our setter lovers is to cherish every moment whether they're lying still next to you or ripping your garbage apart or chewing your favorite shoes, as all I can say is that 4 and a 1/2 years was not near enough time with my Zola. I was very lucky with her she had good behavior by a year old which is good for an irish setter... So I try to keep that in mind with my Zella who is the older of the 2 new pups. I absolutely love this breed I got Zola because of a meal Irish setter that my father had when I was 8 to 12 years old and I did a really good job picking her because she looked and acted a lot like that childhood Irish setter. But these 2 new ones are different in looks and personality of course. And yes that is to be expected. If I were ever to see an adult irish setter that was like my Zola and it was available for me to take home through adoption, I would certainly take her.

    I'm addicted to those redheads. I have 2 right now. Had 7 at one point when I became a failed foster, and fell in love with the brothers I had for a couple of weeks. Best decision I ever made was to keep them and keep them together. They passed away from the same cancer 92 days apart in my home. They're forever together in a custom companion urn I had made. I'm have a female setter that's smaller than normal. She turned 18 on 1/25/2020. She shows little signs of slowing down. Owen is forever a momma's boy. He's not left my side since he came to live with me. He's 12 this year. For those that say Setters are hyper, they've never met my lazy bunch. I love this breed and really wish to be a home for the seniors. I have just fallen for them. If Casey is almost 19, St what age do we really call them senior. I've done nothing fancy with them love, food, and making them 100% family. They've thrived and all had good lives.

    My family had 3 dogs when I was growing up.. a german shepherd, a mutt we had no idea what could possibly be in him (he won "most unusual" in a large, just for fun dog show), and an Irish setter. The Irish setter was beautiful and fun, but I have yet to ever see a more annoyingly disobedient, untrainable dog. (sorry, to fans of them) Couldn't even house train her. I can remember her well, but I can't remember what happened to her.. I think my Mom gave her away to someone because she was frustrating her, too.

    Is bloat a problem with Irish setters?

    • @richardrabins9732
      @richardrabins9732 11 місяців тому

      sadly yes - we lost our irish Setter CLIFTON to bloat at 10 yrs old - I am still hearbroken. WE were lucky to get Winston another Irish Setter about 4 years ago - he is an equally wonderful doggie - who brings a massive amount of joy to our lives. To avoid bloat - your vet can pin their stomachs when they are young. Highly recommend these dogs because 'there is nothing better than an Irish Setter!"

      @brentburton79 3 роки тому +2

      Red setters are very smart. I hear this comment all the time , this opinion is based on a total failure to understand a field dog. Irish setters are quite often "on the clock" aka looking around , doing exactly what they are bred for. They are GREAT dogs !! They love unconditionally however shedding is a real issue. I have 3 and love my dogs and the life we live

      @@brentburton79 thank you for the kind reply. We have decided to get another Black Lab as it will suit the lifestyle better. I am still planning on getting back into upland game hunting and will be looking into this beautiful breed once again, I also find the Viszla quite interesting and the short hair a benefit. Enjoy, my best wishes.
