    Thanks for a perfect explanation of how a reversing circuit works. I am upgrading my side mirrors from manual fold to power fold. I saw how to do this on another video, but the guy only provided a diagram. I bench tested the circuit and it worked perfectly. It came to me that it had to be a reversing circuit when I was trying to figure out if I needed to ground the mirrors to test them (I didn't). I know it works, but with your help I know HOW it works. Kudos!

      Glad it helped. We used this the first time to do our windows, doors and other items on a 4x4 expedition van we built. Its nice to be able to just ground the switch and run ground wires to the relays instead of power. Its a much safer approach as well. If you are wiring up the car also look at Smart 12V fuse blocks, they light up when the fuse blows. Its a great way to quickly tell which fuse has blown.

      You could have seen one of my videos and understood it in 2 min. By the way you shouldn't call then 5 pin relays. They are SPDT relays Bosch style. Calling them 5 pin might get you the wrong ones when you go to buy them. Some 5 Pin relays are actually Single pole Single throw. Where pins 87 and what looks to be 87a is just another 87 no "a".

    Remember this can be used for any case where you need to reverse the polarity of your 12V wires to run a motor, actuator, winch, windows door locks or other devices. You can also change the amperage to suit your needs. The benefit of this approach is that it allows you to control the devices with a low voltage switch and still have high amperage output to your device.

      First
      You shouldn't call them 5 pin relays. They are SPDT relays Bosch style. Calling them 5 pin might get you the wrong ones when you go to buy them. Some 5 Pin relays are actually Single pole Single throw. Where pins 87 and what looks to be 87a is just another 87 no "a". So you need to check that first.
      Second. Getting a wiring diagram would help a great deal. if you have Word, Power Point or better yet Visio, you can make a crude diagram just add pictures and lines with descriptions and from there we can redo it to make sure we understand you.
      Third. Need as much information as possible in list format. a. Make model year of car. b. is the power windows original to the car. ect ect. Post pix of the switches and and any other parts you have.
      Fourth. Post in google drive. Once a connection is made through there direct emails can be used or even phone calls.
      Are you sure it is a four pin switch? I have never seen a 4 pin switch that wasn't harnessed to a control board. The control board is what does what it is named for. Control. These are not direct wired to the motors. So I am very confused by your information. Like why are you trying to put Bosch style relays in and trying to figure them out when/if the car already had power windows. It should already be wired up with relays or control system.
      Last. You shouldn't be running the motor wire to the driver side. Best guess (without much information) that you need to run wires from switch to switch. Parallel connection to the non grounded pins.

    I used your scheme. I have four 24v 40 A relays and two powerful electric motors. I used two spdt relays for each motor and followed your schematic. However, I am wondering in which part of the schematic do I need thicker cables for a current up to 40A and where exactly do I place the 40A fuse in your schematic to protect the cables from overloading. thanks for the reply.

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines  2 роки тому

      That's a great question, and I should have specified it in the video. The 40 Amps from the battery goes to pin #87 and out Pin #30 to the motor. So you could actually fuse it at the battery before pin #87 to protect the relay and motor and possibly even a fuse between pin #30 and the motor if you are concerned that a short might come backwards. Personally I have mine fused before pin #87.

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines  2 роки тому

      You will also want "Heavy" + wire from the battery to #87 and from #30 to the motor. But don't forget a heavy "return" ground wire as well. That goes from battery to #87A. Basically you need heavy wire every where except from your switches and to #85 and #86 as those just power the magnetic coil in the relay.

However, I noticed that the otherwise strong and heavy {12lbs} 24V electric motor from the wheelchair has a red and black wire coming out of it that is only 12 gauge, so I will only be able to use fuses up to 20A? This seems very little to me, I would prefer 30A or even 40A. So I'm left with only being able to draw 20A from the motor if I go for safety vs. power. Because I'm sure I could draw 50A from one motor for a minute or so without consequences for the wires?

      @@hotrod-machines hello, thanks for responding it's just a regular actuator with 2 wires, + & -, to extend you provide power to + & ground the -. If you want it to close I have to swap the ground and power. Just an arm that extends and closes. Does that make sense?

      @@TheSocialPraxis The short answer is it will work. BUT unless you have a limit switch built into the system it will not work properly. What I mean is that there are basically three states in the video above. STATE # 1 might be motor UP, STATE #2 is motor DOWN and STATE # 3 is DO NOTHING. Your brake lights only have OFF and ON, and therefor can only trigger TWO STATES, You could wire it so that when you hit the brakes the actuator goes UP and then when you release the brake the actuator goes down. But once the actuator hits the bottom what stops it from trying to keep going?
      If your actuator has limit switches built in to stop it then just go to the rear lights and figure out which wire is the trigger. Is it + or negative sent by the press of the brake pedal. I'd assume ground Neg - ???

      @@hotrod-machines using one of those tools that beeps when I touch a hot wire, I was able to find the brake wire + when pressed. I believe they have built in switches to stop cause hear any buzzing or anything after they're down/up.

      @@TheSocialPraxis You can follow the video above then. But instead of using the ground - to trigger the relay use the + wire. That means the relay will always have ground and when you hit the positive it will switch the relay. You are going to need to change the wiring on the relay so that both relays trigger when you hit the brakes. You then need to switch the wires on 87 & 87A on one relay. This means when the relays are energized they will always be sending power to the actuator, either up or down. Just watch the video a few times and once you understand that two of the relay wires open and close the relay, one wire is the output from the relay and the other two are the inputs. Please make sure you FUSE this. Because this will blow a fuse if only one relay triggers

    Can this work on AC circuits?

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines  2 роки тому

      The same wiring and principals apply to AC, but you MUST use AC relays rated for the AC voltages and amps

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines  2 роки тому

      BTW you can’t use this method to reverse an AC motor.

      No this can all be done from the same battery or power supply as long as the power supply has enough Amps to run what you want.

    why not use an electric window switch?

      @hotrod-machines  6 місяців тому

      You could use a DPDT switch for low current motors, but the intent of this video is to give users access to relays that are good for 40+ amps of current and run much larger motors.

    Hmm....I thought I had the electrics sorted but something does not seem right.....the wiring diagram is a bit confusing as it seems that neg and pos wires are being strung together as the mass of wires makes it difficult to see what goes where.....I'll keep trying

      Follow the diagram at the 9min mark. Follow the coloured line and when you see a "bump" going over another line that means they are NOT connected. If two lines meet and there is no bump they are connected.

    0:41 "which is kind of special order" NO. No it is not. Using two single pole double throw relays to reverse polarity has been around since there were motors and relays.
    0:41 "i'm going to wire up these single pole double throw relays so that they do the exact same thing as a double" Um No. You are NOT doing the exact same thing. If you were energizing both relays at the same time, THEN you would be close to the exact same thing. Doing it this way adds the ability to stop the motor at any given position. You can't do that just using a DPDT relay.
    FYI on amazon you can find a harness to do this exact thing with. It is pre wired. Very inexpensive.

      Appreciate your thoughts but some of us live in parts of the world where electronics stores and Amazon are not easily accessible. At the time of this video I had access to basic hardware and automotive stores, and these were relays that you can get at almost all of these stores.

      @@hotrod-machines Yes that why I put FYI For Your Information. Generally meant as giving information for future use, or something to think about or even look into. It is not meant to be a "You don't know what you are doing you should have just use this or that".
      And if amazon is not accessible then just disregard.
      Also where do you live that you don't have access to amazon. WOW. I wasn't addressing the entire world just you. LOL. I made an assumption that if you have access to youtube to make and upload videos, I was sure you had access to amazon. You know they deliver?
