Rush job repairing a shaft for the local saw mill

- I had an emergency job come in from the saw mill. They dropped the shaft off for repair at 3:30 in the afternoon and needed it back the next morning. Needless to say it was a late night but I got it done for them and I was able to video the repair for you. I got to use the Jet lathe and the SWI Traks readout for the first time. I finished up the job on the Monarch Model K lathe. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching.

💯enjoyed video Tom.
Thank you Al.
Hard earned money, Tom. But ya got the job done, thats what counts. A satified customer will come back. Effort well spent. Regards
Thank you and yes they have been a good regular customer.
Boy that’s where one of those metal spray gadgets would come in handy.
Nice job buddy.
Hey Jeff. I agree. Too bad I don't have one.
Tom - In a past life , I used the following technique. I trued the shaft and added a concentric center hole. Supported all of it with a Ball Bearing Center. Filed the ugly O.D.
then added a husky knurl. Turned the knurl to fit the bearing. A blast from the past . - Jim
Nice job, that's a ton of welding and work.
Thanks Steve. It's was a bunch of welding for sure. The old Miller did not even hiccup. Gotta love the older transformer machines.
Hello Tom,
I guess that sometimes you have to work late to get the job done. A happy customer is a returning customer... Well done.
Take care.
Paul,,
They wanted it back ASAP so I had to burn the midnight oil as the saying goes. They paid me extra which was nice.
Nothing like a rush job to fill your night in mate, good job
Yep. Thanks Matty.
It turned out nice Tom. Sleepless nights. I used to to 36 hours straight in the big snow storms. Happy I don't have to anymore. Well done buddy.
Hey Randy. Wow that is alot of over time. I did pull a 24 hour stint at my old job, but that was long ago when I was young.
Nice repair Tom. Thanks fire sharing.
Thanks Dave. I hope you are doing well.
Way to go Tom, proper job there buddy 👏 thanks for sharing and I hope you're keeping well mate
Thanks Ralfy. Doing good buddy.
Tough job but you were tougher. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.
I appreciate that Harold.
Somehow I missed this one Tom , Sorry man ! Great repair , they will break another part and keep you in business my friend ..
Hey there Shawn. Thanks buddy. They have been good regular customers.
I'm not sure I'm allowed to comment on your shaft project. Nice work, Tom. I love the projects you are getting.
Lol. We are friends so no problem. 😀
Hi Tom I tried a weld build like that on a much smaller shaft and it was hard work even at that size. Good to see it done. Cheers
Hey Paul. It was a bit of work for sure. Just glad I was able to get it done in time.
Time to build yourself a welding rotator. That would make this kind of jobs way easier. Go for it, Tom.
I actually have one. I was too lazy to pull it out and set it up. I figured I could weld it up using the rollers just as fast.
G'day Tom. Lost of welding & machining but eventually there was a good outcome, because the baring fitted really well
I realise that you have a great selection of tools & machines in your shop, & this might have been a one of, of this type of shaft rebuilding, maybe It's time to invest in a Metal Spraying Kit, which would have cut your time by about 30%, and would have been easier on your time & carbide tips.
Great video overall. Keep up the good works
Ted
Hey Ted. I would love a spray welding rig. If I keep getting jobs like this it is definitely something to look into buying.
Now get some sleep before the next emergency comes in. It would be nice it they brought to you to remove old bearing. Before making such a mess. Great job Tom.
Hey there Todd. Yeah they did hack it up getting the seized bearing off the shaft.
G'day Tom, you got there in the end. Yep, running your own business means you do the hours to get the job out and build the good will so you get the repeat work.
Cam
Hey Cam. Yeah that trust is nice.
Don't you just hate those last minute walk in's but you try and get your customers going again and it keeps them coming back when they need something quickly. What I hate is when they have a habit of crying wolf every time they need something. I fixed a shaft like you last minute end of day thing and found out later it was over a week before they used it. When I started charging big expedite fees to them all that stopped. People will take advantage of you if you let them. You have to weed out the bad apples sometimes. Great job on the shaft...
Hey Johnny. Yeah I agree. So far they have been pretty good as customers and usually are good with they get it when it is ready. The rush jobs get charged more for sure.
One of those spinny spinny welding fixture things would be swell to use. Just subscribed!
Welcome to my channel! Would you believe I have one. I was too lazy to pull it out and set it up. I figured spinning the shaft by hand on rollers might be just as fast.
Hi Tom
Some heavy duty work there, you earned your money on that one, Hope you didn't keep Mr Khaos up till 2 am🤣🤣👍👍👍👍
It took me back to my younger days repairing heavy duty mining equipment, did alot of machining up of welded shafts etc. to recover them 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
atb
Kev
Hey Kev. Khaos was just as tired as I was. It was past both of our bed times. 🙂
Well done Tom , I’m sure your effort will be appreciated by the mill owner. The jobs will keep coming when people know they can depend on your professionalism to get them up and running. Take care 👍👍
Thank you. 🙏
very good job my friend Tom,,thanks for your time
Thank yo Michel!
good job
Thank you!
Pulled an all nighter, probably drank a gallon of coffee..
Gota take care of those loyal customers..
Hope you got some sleep 😁
ATB.....
Hey there Dean. I was tired for sure by the time I got it wrapped up. They were happy when they picked it up in the morning.
Nice easy one , what else would you want to be doing in the middle of the night ! 👍
Yeah LOL.
Shafts ????
1 of my first jobs out of school.
Apprentice in a Shaft Shop.
Every sort of Shaft you could think of, we did them all.
When I finished my Apprenticeship I Never wanted to see another Shaft again LOL.
Thankfully my next job was working Maintenance in an open cut mine.
The only Shafts I saw there were the Hydraulic Shafts for the quarry trucks.
My job was to simply remove them and get them ready for transport for someone else to do the work 😄
Don't you hate it when you build up the Shaft and it's still undersize 😒
We used different process for reclaiming.
Never really had the usual problems assorted with doing one offs that you managed to get stuck with.
I'm guessing this job didn't exactly hit your hourly rate ??
The only positive you can take from it is you managed to at least getting a video out of the job 🙂👍
It would not have been so bad if it was not a rush job and I got it last minute to do. Ideal job for flame welding. I just don't have one of those torch set ups.
I spect they can't all go like cake. You stuck to it. It looked nice in the end.
New sub. Cheers!
Thanks and welcome.
Right on Tom
Thanks James.
I think you jinxed yourself on that job when you said it was simple. Simple is one of the words I wish people would not use when talking about project work
Hey Robert. Yep it can go South for sure before you know it.
That was a job and a half Tom. Keeps the customer happy, which counts in the end I guess. Take care. ATB Tom. Cheers Nobby
Thanks Nobby. It did wear me out a bit wrestling the heavy shaft in and out of the lathe several times.
came out great!
Thank you.
Looks like you're keeping the whole town running Tom. That's a good thing for Hill Top. Must have been past Khaos's bedtime. Thanks for the video.
Hey Jim. Yeah 2024 is starting off with a bang. I guess the whole town was waiting for me to get back on my feet, and now they are flooding me with work. That is a good thing though. Yeah Khaos was snoozing while I was working.
Wow bit of dedication there, could do with a motorised welding table 👴🏻👍
Thanks. I actually have one. I was too lazy to set it up. It was late and I figured hand rolling it would be fast enough.
Hi Tom,
There's always a gotcha with rush jobs. 🙂 Nice job ready to be returned to the customer. I hope they appreciate the time you invested. Do you wish you had a flame spray welding rig?
Hey Don and thanks. Yeah a spray welding rig would be nice. They are just so pricey it is hard to justify the cost unless I know I could get plenty of jobs to pay for itself.
For your center I watched Adam B. He rested the qctp against the drill chuck to steady it, it worked.
Great tip thanks. 👍
I just subscribed the reason. You’re doing whatever it takes to make the customer happy which makes me happy.😊 came out really good. Do you have that spray metal thingamajig he?
Thanks Anthony. No I don't have a spray welding rig. I wish I did.
Hi tom the shaft turned out good. This job would be perfect for a spray weld repair. Thanks
Thanks Randy. I totally agree on the spray welding. I just don't have a torch set up. They are just so expensive. If I new I could get a lot of jobs likes this then it would be worth buying one.
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 Maybe its a if you buy it they will come? 🙂
Good to see you've recovered from the fire how's caos?
He is doing good. Thanks.
Isn’t that bearing supposed to press on?
I asked that and they said "No'. Just a nice slide on fit.
The finished shaft looks great, Tom. Cheers Tony
Thanks Tony.
Привіт з України 👍🤝🤝🤝🇺🇦 Удачі і мирного неба над головою.
Looks like a good application for spray welding?
I agree. I just don't have one of those set ups because of cost.
Curious the total time and cost? In upstate NY with the quick turnaround, that would be an $800 job.
5.5 hours of machining and welding. I had to wait 2.5 hours for the shaft to cool down before I could start machining so that made for such a long night. Less than 800 but not by too much since they are a good repeat customer.
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 Seemed like more time than that, good job.
Rush jobs double the hourly rate. LOL
Amen. I did get paid extra for sure.
Why weld it and warp it? Shrink a sleeve on it. Last forever. No warp.
Shit repair. 3 jaw, warped from multiple welds.
