Welcome to my channel. I will be featuring videos of manual machining, metal fabrication, and welding taking place in my shop in the gorgeous mountains of SW Virginia.
Hillsville VA Labor Day Weekend Flea Market 2024
That time of year again. Me and my wife hit the flea market looking for goodies. She came home with more stuff then I did. I only found a couple of items for the shop. It was good to see my machinist tool vendor there. He had a bunch of stuff, but nothing I needed this time. I hope you enjoy the walk around and seeing the things for sale.

Modifying the Jet lathe steady rest
Переглядів 2 тис.21 день тому
In this video I remove the bronze finger tips on the steady rest and add roller ones. During the fix I discover the steady rest hinge is sloppy and I need to repair it. Some milling on the Defiance Boring mill and the Excello mill get things square again. I machine up two bronze spacers on the Monarch lathe to fix things. Thanks for watching.
Machining large pins for the local saw mill
Переглядів 3,8 тис.Місяць тому
The saw mill broke one pin and discovered another larger pin was about to fail. I got one pin machined with the 8620 stock I have one hand. The larger pin and another small pin will be machined out of 4140 PH when I get the material from my steel supplier. I could not get induction hardened chrome bar from my supplier. I hope you enjoy some lathe work on the old Monarch Model K lathe.
Repairing a tractor bucket for a local farmer
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Місяць тому
A local farmer tore up his tractor bucket. He wanted it fixed on the cheap. I had to do some metal fab and welding to get it to the point it would be usable again. I hope you enjoy seeing the job shop stuff.
Making some utility pole camera mounts, but with a twist
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Місяць тому
My electrician needed some more camera mounts made. He brought me some not round aluminum tubing to use. That created a challenge and a bunch of machining to mate aluminum and steel together. I had to use all 3 lathes for this project. Thanks for watching and your continued support.
Machining a pair of post drivers
Переглядів 1,6 тис.Місяць тому
My electrician needed a couple of drivers made to help with driving sign posts into the ground. So I turn a 4.5" chunk of mystery steel into a couple of drivers for him. Some lathe work on the Monarch Model K lathe and some milling work on the Excello mill using the rotary table. I hope you enjoy the machining.
Machining the large angle plates on the horizontal boring mill
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Місяць тому
The Defiance boring mill chugged along getting the newly built angle plates flat and square. I took it easy with the speeds and feeds since this was my first milling job with the mill. The 5" face mill did a great job and left a nice surface finish. I hope you enjoyed some HBM action. Thanks for watching!
Local feed mill needed their auger trued
Переглядів 2 тис.2 місяці тому
So the local feed mill that I do work for brought me one of their augers they just had made at another shop. It was running out of round and the end bearing would not fit on the shaft. With some work on the Jet lathe I got it fixed up for them. Just a short video but I figured you might like seeing the jobs that come in the door.
Fabricating some large angle plates for the HBM
Переглядів 2,8 тис.2 місяці тому
Well this one took a little longer than expected. Making some nice usable sized angle plates for the horizontal boring mill. After making 136 holes in the 1 inch thick plates I took them over to the G&E shaper and cut the weld bevels. Then got everything welded up using my Miller Mig welder and my Everlast tig welder to burn some 7018 rods. Now to mill them square and true, but that will be nex...
Making a MT5 arbor for a 5 inch face mill
Переглядів 2,1 тис.3 місяці тому
This video ended up being a little long, but I had a lot of footage. This was a fun and challenging project. Quite a bit of lathe and mill work. Matter of fact I ended up using all 3 of my lathes to get this done. Thank goodness Bozo never showed up. LOL! Anyways I hope you enjoy the arbor build. Also check out Tangent Engineering and the products Jim sells.
Hillsville VA Memorial Weekend Flea Market 2024

Me and my wife hit the flea market this weekend. It was a little disappointing the lack of vendors this year. I was able to find a few goodies. Starrett, Proto, Baker and Cincinnati tooling all came home with me. I hope you enjoy the walk around and seeing the event.
Hopping up a Hopper
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 місяці тому
Sorry about not posting a video last week. Things just did not come together in time. This video is twice as long as what I normally post so I hope that makes up for it. So this job involved a decent amount of lathe work on the Monarch and milling on the Excello making the parts. Rotary table got used a lot too. Thanks for watching!
Making a taper lock key for the boring mill
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 місяці тому
Also referred to as a Davis Draw key, the Taper lock key helps retain tapered tooling in the spindle bore. This simple project involves some milling, surface grinding, and a little bit of fiddling to get it made. Only come to find out that my spindle bore has been worn and reamed to a point that the tooling retaining slots no longer line up with the spindle slot. Now another issue to address. T...
The Defiance Boring Mill is done!
Переглядів 1,8 тис.4 місяці тому
What a project. I am glad it is all done and now I can start using it. Thanks for watching the restoration series on the mill. Also thanks to everybody that helped out. Now it is time to make tooling, boring bars, angle plates, and a taper lock key for it.
Getting a new ball screw adapted to the Defiance Boring Mill
Переглядів 1,7 тис.4 місяці тому
With a little work the ball screw is all done and mounted in the mill and works perfectly. It took some turning work on the Jet and Monarch lathes and some drilling and tapping on the Excello mill to get it all together. Really pleased to be making some progress and now on to getting the table and tailstock back on. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

@@hilltopmachineworks2131 Welcome Tom👍
Excellent show 😊 Top advertising signs and collectibles Thanks for your time and effort 😊😮
A little bit of everything.
Great video 😮 Excellent range of collectables and advertising signs Thank you for taking us along😊😊😊😮
Thanks for watching.
Man, Tom. You have swap meets...
This is a pretty good one. Me and my wife always have a good time.
If a toy of Bailys went under that hardware rack and he couldn't get it he would have had no trouble rooting the whole thing over to get his toy. LOL Man I miss that dog.
Khaos has a nose for his toys and can seek them out like he is on a mission.
Thanks for taking us for a walk. That was nice.
You are welcome 🤗
Hi Tom lucky you didn't have matty and me with you you would have needed a bigger truck 😂😂😂
I bet. You guys could have loaded up.
good toys Tom
Thanks. 🙏
Gday Tom, great to see the market was busy and looked to have plenty of tools there, keen to see the steel job episode mate, cheers
Hey Matty. It was nice to see it busy and people buying stuff. I did not find much this time, but still a good time.
Cheers Tom - looks like a very decent turn out vendor wise. Lots of swap meets have really gone downhill. Thanks for bringing us along! 👍
Hey Stuart. I was glad to see a lot of vendors and shoppers this time. Nice weather always helps too.
Fun.
It was a good time even in the heat.
Nice finds, looked like a good swap meet
Howdy Adam. This event usually is pretty good. Nobody was selling any radial arm drills though. 🤣
My wife asked me what i want to do this summer back Jan 2020. I said go to a huge flea market swap meet like Tom. Hasn't happened yet. We'll get there. I love these videos. Did you see the big pipe cutter? I have the exact same one. It will cut steel pipe. Good one Tom.
Heck yeah. I hope you two get the chance. I did see that large cutter. Thought it was cool.
Tom - Nice relaxing Video . I enjoyed it .-- Jim
Excellent. 👍
TOM slow down I'm trying to look at the antique oil cans 😂 didn't you here me hollering stop. Dang I lost out.😢 lol enjoy the day buddy.
Sorry about that. Lots to see and not enough time. In all honesty I do try and pause the camera just a bit.
We used to summer in Galax VA......HIllesville is a quaint little town.....Rural Retreat is a nice area as well.
I went to flee market also on monday, arrived at 8:00am and by 11:00 so many people were there you could not look at anything so called it good. Thanks Tom
Wow. That is good for the vendors. Hopefully people were buying.
Thanks for sharing enjoyed Tom
Thanks. I appreciate you.
Good move having wrenches etc for specific machines at the machine. Glad to see you're busy. Cheers Tony
Yeah it really helps out not having to hunt for what you need when it is right there.
Great to see another flea market video. The shop is looking much better now after your unwanted "makeover" Thanks for sharing. ATB regards from the UK
Thanks for watching!
That's my idea of heaven Tom. I'd love to go to a flea market like that. You'd have to drag me away. Tools and more tools. Bliss. Thanks for sharing. All the best Nobby
Come on over. We would have a great time. Lots of stuff as you saw.
Like these flea market vids Tom. Thanks for taking us along.
Great. Glad to hear it Jim.
"Wot no freshly ground drills" Tom😁
I know. You need to fix that. 😀
You can't go wrong with a flea market that has hit & miss engines running!
Great way to spend time with the wife. Too bad Kayos and the rest of the Knopps couldn't come along. 👍
Yep. We have a good time. Too hot for the doggies unfortunately.
I might have to come down and check out that flea market some year! We are going to one in a couple weeks at the county fairgrounds, but it is nothing like that.
The Labor Day weekend one is the larger of the two so I would aim for that weekend.
hi tom love a good flea market, nice one👍👍 atb Kev(UK)
Thanks for watching Kev!
I just finished a set of boring bars myself the other day: ua-cam.com/video/fX8ruFE-98g/v-deo.htmlsi=Fx3PT3p3AcDf55u_
Nice jacks
Thanks.
Always fun to get to do some nice shoosh shoosh milling.
It was. 🙂
Welder gold up since the unboxing? Been looking at this one so I don't have to do all my personal welding at work
I think it is still around the same price.
Same failure twice a year... No secondary part prepped. Production is down. Mouth shut, expedited fees apply.
They have a spare now so that is good.
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 Yup. They are on a better path, that's for sure.
good idea tom. Now that lathe also wants a color 😂. kidding. you're going to enjoy that👍🏻
Thanks buddy. It may get a paint job at some point down the road.
Well thought out repair job Tom. Using those engine bearings was an inspired idea. The horizontal boring machine proved itself again. Cheers Nobby
Thank you Nobby. Happy to get it done.
The roller lifter is an inspired solution.
Thanks Robert.
Interesting project as always. I need to do something similar.
You have bronze finger tips on your steady also?
It break down ?
Very smart 👌 all the best trevor
Thank you Trevor.
Can not quit yet so have a question, do you watch a youtube channel called "Cutting Edge Engineering Australia". A exciting channel on how his shop is run, and his super hero friend, the little dog he has and a bird that flies in to mooch off of his friendship. I warren you the altros include some funny but realistic false starts in making the videos which contain a few swear words. I am sorry if it offends you... his quality of work that is demanding in Australia is hilarious, hard and still quite similar to the work your doing. His shop is larger, because of the size of equipment he works on fixing... I am a bit off here as his work is mostly just machine work, something I so admire and wish I had taken as my own trade. I spent time in machine shops in the motor pool, then in other shops over the years. Starting a machine shop requires more money invested than most men/women make in a lifetime. I bought a milling machine in a navy auction, I went for it back in seventy six, I had some substantial money an bid up to five thousand at that time to find out that the milling machine I liked or more loved using was a hundred thousand dollars and twenty years old. It still looked and worked like new. No automation in those times, So a machine built in the fifties, some said made for the second world war, I do forget that part now, was a time spent learning how to make the many functions work. I do hope that you give it a chance, the channel I referred to, great playlists and its not swear words in the videos, just the mistakes made that do add humor to me.
I sure do. I enjoy Curtis , Karen, and Homie. He does some awesome work.
Really nice fix, the roller lifters were a great choice. I also think you did a great job with the spacers.
Thank you Steve. Trying to keep it simple.
Nice machining work. We shared this video on our homemade tool forum last week 😎
Awesome and thank you.
Thanks!
I happen to have some roller lifters and a steady rest with bronze also. Another project added to my to do list. Thanks for the idea.
Hey Jim. I hope the upgrade goes easy for you as it did for me (except for the hinge part).
My father was in a propane explosion in 56, the winter of that year. In a small cabin and no garlic was used to make the propane have the oder you detect. My dad was wearing black wool underware that acted like a wick, his body was covered in burns except for where he was setting on a toilet, the reason he had gone in the cabin. His body was so hot that the knuckles rolled over on his hands, his ears melted as well. The only skin his butt was the only thing not badly burned so it was used for the skin grafts. I can go on and on about the fire, why and how, but hearing your plight to get out was so similar, heat robbing air and holding the door shut... the only reason he did not die was he was able to hold his breath and then when the door was broken open. (poorly explained) the force of the heat blew him out of the building.... like I said, a lot more to say but you have just been through it. Saddens me to hear this happens as it is your livelihood, takes a lot of time to catch up, bills eat at you. I am seventy five now and do know the problems you face.
Oh wow. Thanks for sharing that.
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 I do hope there are more people who will help you recover from this tragedy
@@morgansword Our community has been great.
Not sure why you didn't use the lathe to cut the hole in the square piece of metal and just press it on the shaft. Making a tighter fit and no chance of it being out of square. I get the impression all of the metal on their machine is the same as the low quality shaft that came in. Was the machine made in china where cheaper metals are used.
Using the hole saw was much faster and the fit did not need to be super precise since it was going to get welded on.
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 I decided to see what other videos were done and seen this fire issue. I left a short story of my father's fire
Enjoyed the modifications and repair…good job
Thanks Chuck. I appreciate you watching.
Hello Tom, Nice job done there... Make's a lots of sense for the customers to have a few spares available... Hopefully they can be encouraged to review all there machines and give you the work to make the spares, in the long run it makes sense to lessen downtime. See you next time. Take care. Paul,,
Thanks Paul. These should keep the machine running for a while.
G'day Tom. Nice one mate. Great to see the rotary table welder working. Cheers, Aaron.
Hey there big guy. Thanks for watching and it was good to get the rotary table out and stretch its's legs.
G'day Tom. Good job on the bucket repair mate. You'll pleased to know I watched this whilst working on blank account and even let all the adds play (ha ha ha). Cheers, Aaron
Thanks Aaron. Your the best!
