- Hey Good People,
I had a quiet running Dodge Charger in the shop this week. Surprisingly it had no lifter tick. at over 200,000 miles! Customer stated that the check engine light was on along with a plethora of other issues. The customers wasn't happy with my discovery.
In this video you can follow along with my diagnostic process.
I hope you like the video and I always hope you learn something. Leave your comments below. I love hearing from you guys!

my 2010 dodge Charger 3.6L has 236K miles bought from an elderly woman for $2900 2 years ago best money I've ever spent
I like your style and and i run my shop with the same integrity. Good job! I will say that ive never had any Pentastar issues except the leaky oil filter cooler. Run good synthetic oil 5w/30 and got 170k on a Grand Cherokee and 57k on a Gladiator no ticks.
My 300 with the same motor is at 248k. No noises. Purrs like a kitten
Its because you drive your ride economically keep it up 👍💯
Whatever you’re doing keep doing it because that’s super rare. Good on ya.
Badass 💪💪💪
Nice my challenger going at 172k so far engine nice and strong same with transmission but gonna need new suspension lol but still running good
It will probably catch you off guard at some point like in this video haha
I always love watching your videos! I’m glad I don’t see many 6th Gen Camaros with these issues. Every time I was your clips I want to change my oil immediately haha! I just serviced my A8 trans and I’m so relieved I did! Longevity is my goal!
Protect Alex at all cost this the kind of guy you wanna take your car to time after time and become a family mechanic 🫡💯
Any opinions appreciated. I have 31k miles on mine and am going to change from 5-20 to 5-30 oil to hopefully help with keeping oil up top on the motor at idle. I'll be happy if I get 200k out of her 🤞🤞🤞
Oil test sounds like a good idea. A lot of miles on that engine. Transmission codes sounds like a problem also. Brakes are crazy loud.
That’s what I like to hear. and do the job right and don’t take shortcuts and you will have customers for the rest of your life.💯👍
I love your videos. I wish we had a mechanic with your ethics in the town where I live.
While I know other years are a problem, almost every Pentastar on these repair videos with a ticking issue turns out to be a 2015. OTOH, only about 30% of vehicle owners do regular vehicle maintenance, including oil changes, and even then if you follow the manual maintenance schedule, you may go, 10,000 miles between changes, which will pretty much kill any car. My cousin has a 2015 Jeep with a Pentastar and it started ticking around 100,000 miles, and yeah he's pretty bad at changing the oil.
Great video alex .i got a 2014 charger at 108k not ticking yet i already have bran new 24 rockers an the lifters. And the special tool to lock cam phasers.i already replaced my oil cooler 😅😅. I do all my own wrenching luckily.
Love your videos alex! Great work!
Glad you like them! Thanks
Love you work.. would love to bring my srt8 06.,178k for the Dr.Wellnes visit
Hey Alex I to really enjoy your show I ,ve learned a lot alot about penistar 3.6 an that dodge 2.4 continue please to keep up the good work
Will do buddy thank you for watching and the support
Really informative videos my brother, thank you
Thank you very much. I really do try 👨🏽🔧
Interesting I’ll know what to look for thanks good video
You are a good guy Alex, I like you. I just subscribed. 6k to do all that work on that car is a bargain. The only thing that worries me is after all that, the transmission. You may be able to find a low mileage used engine and transmission for it. I don't know if you do that sort of thing. Good video
Thanks for the sub! Welcome to the fam! And yes I swap the engine for a low mileage used one. But it depends on the customers wallet.
I really believe it depends on how you take care of it like I have a Hyundai Santa Fe which people say that is jumped. My dad owned it since new he passed away. I still drive it it’s got 187 on it runs amazing.
Love this stuff I feel like I know more about 3.6s than Hondas lol. That motor mount testing trick was golden appreciate it you two! Especially the ones out here such as myself who are self thought in the trades. Also last thing your customer there with the charger needs a window soon lol.
It's a Dodge charger, it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't have bald tires. That 211,000 was probably the most hardest miles of that cars life.
2018 Ram 2500 6.4l 170k miles no lifter tick and trucks been worked hard. Mobil 1 0w-40w since new changed every 6k miles. It does have some exhaust leak ticks, but not the lifter tick knock on wood! My work truck and we work them extremely hard and they do idle for long periods of time and out of a fleet we have only had one fail to that issue.
Hey Doc, do you think maybe in one video you could show a v6 pentastar engine after you fixed the tick so we can get an idea of what a proper engine should sound like? Thank you!
I got you! I may have a video already. I’ll check.
@AlexTheCarDoctor thank you boss!
Great content as usual,
the pentastar is easy to maintain everything is reachable.
It always the driver fault not taken care of they car
That is very true and to add to it, sports cars we tend to dog and get on them a little more, so if you have poor maintenance on top of it, well you see it first hand right here. All in all, 200k is a lot of miles so he didn't do too bad. People think that they should get 300k or more out of a car, but face it that is a lot of miles. I've seen some get 4 to 500k miles and still going. Far as I'm concerned, that is a miracle, especially on a Charger.
Not really. The lifters are pretty poorly designed and the oil cooler housing is made of ABS plastic. It would probably be ok in a small city car, but not a car that is marketed as a muscle car. If you are heavy on the gas, it will break and if it’s the oil cooler that breaks you are probably going to need an engine. That’s not regular maintenance. Having a critical part like that with such a high failure rate is unacceptable. That’s not an ok place to cut corners to keep costs down.
@@Leonarco333 I speak from my own experience, my channel literally has all of my content on my 2012 dodge charger all maintenance done by me on video.
Preventive maintenance is all this car needs.
@@mightyprophet4581 well congrats. I’m also speaking from experience. My Chrysler 200 had the same motor but was an absolute nightmare to do every single little thing. I sold it before I let the intrusive thoughts win and push it off a cliff into the ocean.
@@Leonarco333 aaahh lol that engine is not made for that small car, the 2.0l & 2.4L are good engines for that car.
So You are correct the penstar will be trouble with very little room to work with in the 200.
Great video where is your shop located?
To me $6K seems reasonable with an engine and all the other stuff. I just had brakes, rotors, struts and shocks and tires with no engine and spent 4K. On a Honda, Pilot. If you were in Cincy I’d be coming to you for service. Good work.
All depends on what part of the country you live in.
Got me with the “no tick” lol
@0:30 and don't forget to check hub runout. A bad hub can cause pulsation too!
i dont think the car was taken care of For some reason i feel like the spark plugs havent been changed in a while too
Here in the UK there's a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across at least 75% of the tyre. If it's under that or has other serious defects and the police catch it, you get 3 points on your license and £100 fine. That's for each tyre! So if all four are gone and you get caught that could take you up to 12! Hit 12 and you're banned for a minimum of 6 months!
come on people, take care of them good looking Dodges.
Hey Alex, do you have a video of a 3.5L Charger/Chrysler 300 making the tick noise?
Hello Alex my name is Jared I have the 2019 dodge grand caravan van its great 75 ,miles suspension checked all its good but I'm hearing a noise like something its loose .have you had any experience.with this issue before? Oh my bad the noise its in the front .all bushings are new motor mounts new .can it be the shocks.?
Do your scanner that you're using check can system it looks like the autel 808
Time to let it go! 💯
That way I hate a dodge or Chrysler product in general. They dodge the questions when it comes to reliability 😂😂😂
I see what you did there 😂🤣😂🤣 good one!
@@AlexTheCarDoctor 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Alex can you do a video on changing the mounts on a 2015 dodge Durango sxt
I got you! The next one that comes in 🎥
Ive got a 2017 charger pursuit 3.6L... 139k on the odometer, and 7,6xx idle hours... I'm roughly at 390k miles... oil canges every 3k miles for the last 2yrs that I've had it
390K MILES??? DAMN think that’s a new record for the 3.6
I’m a little confused on the spindle part, can you explain?
Tell em I’ll buy it if it’s paid off clean title be a great shell for me to switch over everything in 😅been looking for a high mileage charger they would cost wayyy less and this one got engine problems I think I just scored sadly😢😅
Hey Doc, maybe u can help me out with a quick reply. My engine shakes a little only when im on a red light while on Drive. My first two guesses are spark plus or the engine mounts. Any advice on what it could be? Awesome content ! Thank u
Do you have a charger? Any lights on the dash
Could also be an exhaust leak.
So what you saying is at 100,000 miles get the cams lifter and rockers changed no matter if they’re a problem or not?
Cams only have to be replaced if they show scoring. Once you hear the tick, it’s best just to do them all.
I take good care of my cars but I only change the oil filter on my 3.6 Penta every other change. Barely hand tight on that plastic cap too. I am so paranoid of a filter housing leak. I had it once and I 🙏 to never have it again. 😂
Did you upgrade to the aluminum one? Problem will be solved…
the penastar chysler engines can last if they go with quality rockers and lifters. Those cheap parts with the vendors they go through is casuign ppl to go through engines. also th 5w-30 in the southern regions they require yu to use isnt enough protection.
I'm at 289k miles on my 2012. I finally have to change my valve gaskets
Damn dodge needs to step their reliability game up, if they can’t produce nice 3.6 engines. I wonder how hellcats will be in the 100k range. 100k ain’t shit in today’s world people drive more than ever.
More hemi tick vids please ! Or if you find a hemi with no tick.. share it too
You got it bro
I've got one! Keeping my fingers crossed 😂
What kind of scanner is that
2016 & up lifter issues are fixed.
I have a 300 and it throws a camshaft code when I’m low on oil. The light goes away After I top the engine off with oil . So maybe this charger has low oil due from that leaky oil cooler
How much for a Lifter tick job
wow Alex, a lot going on with that car, 6,000 is a great price to bring it back to a dependable car but is it really worth it?, a better idea may be to get the brakes working better, mayby just front rotors and find some low cost tires, then it could be driven a few more thousand miles or be sold as a budget car for 1,500 or so, there are people out there that a car that only has 5 or 10 thousand miles left it may work for them
I’ll trash the v6, dodge has been making this cars extremely horrible
Idk man from idle I hear tik tiki tik tik from that vehicle 👂🏽
At the watching the video from this side of the screen, I can hear something too…. Very faint.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor bro I’ve been marathoning ur channel lately it’s awesome keep at it 👌🏽 what are couple of first things that comes to your mind when u see p0503 code?
This is why every time I check the oil on my wife's penastar I check The pleats for metal
1st where y’all been? Hope all is well
Lol been working, I’ve been sick 🤒 I’m feeling a lot better now. Might go live this Sunday!
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I’m glad to hear you’re doing a lot better, see you soon
My 07 charger 3.5 had almost 300k and sounded like it did when jt rolled off the lot. I was original owner
Those 3.5’s are pretty decent motors. Way better than the 2.7
should have tested it for the channel lol
VVT oil starvation is deff going to make that car scratch at startup
Why aren't you not recommending BAXTER PERFORMANCE to your pentastar owners. You should do a review on there product. Save these engines.
how can the pentastar be a better engine
Imo 3.5L are okay . Motor oil is cheap for a reason, you SUPPOSED to service regularly $20 per month average (every 3) . When I was young i never ever changed oil now im OD bout it.
Better clean the engine, put some cheap tires, maybe do something to stop the limp mode. Maybe used cam and sell it.
That's fucked bro passing your problems off on someone else that spends their hard earned money on it smh. Either fix and sale it. take the loss up front with someone. Or Part it out. Don't screw someone over.
@@guildensteinfoutch6232definitely Fkd up 💀
At 100k mile lifter replace
Question
Which toyota you would consider to be more reliable
The toyota isis or the toyota fielder??
Moneymaker!!!
at 6,000 Alex will not get rich, that is a lot of work , there are more profitable jobs out there
Shit 211,000 that car has done did it’s service time for a new car not worth spending the money on that, but it does look like a good parts car to hold onto…
That steering wheel though.
It's a steering wheel cover
OK.@@peachyclean93
Why do i think of bIzzy bone when i watch these vids?
😂🎶🎤 got get that money mane! Its my favorite rap group fr lol
I have a chrysler 300 ,with a 200000 miles no nise but the only problem have its a c9de p219 a and no mechanic can find the problem
Sounds like a bad oxygen sensor to me and upstream oxygen sensor to be exact
Ask them what wanna sell it for
Hey Doc, You have a pretty nice diagnostic channel. Can we work with you?
