Annapurna Devi is the greatest legend that Indian classical music has ever seen. There hasn’t been anyone who has come close to her art, and as Pt. Nityanand Haldipur puts it, male ego got in the way of her extraordinary career in music.

It is a great privilege to see Ma Annapurna Devi’s short Interview as she spoke minimal compare to the Interviewer!! She was in a True Sense a Great Legend for a Hindustani Classical Music. Pt. Ravi Shankaraji did a great injustice to his Wife & his Guruji by asking her not to give any Concerts. So she only taught so many great Artists of Past & Present time!! I wish it was more of her talk about herself & her Father, her Guru!! Thanks…for the Video!!

I wrote a comment here below two years ago. I would like to add to it by saying the following here: What a tragedy for Indian music, that neither Annapurna's brother Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, nor her dad Ustad Allauddin Khan bothered to ask her to continue serious performances after Ravi Shanker had left her. Moreover, Ali Akbar Khan had already become famous after his world tours with Ravi Shanker. Why did he not do recorded jugalbandis with his sister as he was doing with Ravi Shankar? Why did he not arrange for Annapurna to at least record her performances in studio, so that Indian classical music would have a treasure trove of professionally recorded music gems from this amazing artist? Why? Why? The only recording of her amazing performance of Manjh Khammaj that we have today on UA-cam is full of noise and interference, and even so, it is incomplete and stops abruptly. I have to further add that, during her long years of seclusion after Ravi Shankar had broken off with her, several musicians came to learn music under her, but no one had the sense to get her to do some recordings of her music that may have reached us. That is a great shame. We know that in her self-imposed exile from the music world, she had become a difficult person to deal with, but still the blame for her unrecorded music must fall squarely on her family, and above all on Ravi Shankar himself. Even after divorcing her, he should have had the character to recognize her genius and he could have persuaded her to at least record some of her sterling music properly in a studio. Today, there are people who play the Surbahar, but no one will ever equal the profound depth of her performance of Manjh Khammaj. Just imagine, if we had had a dozen more of her properly recorded performances, either live or in studio, how much richer would Indian Instrumental music have been!

This is priceless gem. Those who are critical of the interviewer should understand that Annapurna Devi was suffering from asthma , so it was difficult for her to talk in length. How can she speak about her life when apart from music every thing had been taken away from her including son Subho Shankar.

The person/s who cared for her, her students and those who made themselves available for this production should be appreciated!
The comments in the discription, have been echoing, even before this video was produced.
They are all tributes but bring to light the harsh facts of life and our society!
Her life was not "wasted" as she was loved and respected by her students - a true teacher.
It seems that a woman/mother or anyone else for that matter, who has been blessed with a gift, is the best teacher!
Not many artists have had such ardent witnesses of the talent like she posessed and her nurturing spirit!

can't imagine how such great things occur in this world. See how Sanjeevkumar instilled the idea of seeking higher knowledge to Harikrishna Chourasia, which was already predicted by Baba & also told to seek knowledge from his daughter. That became true after so many years. Maa Annapurna is a national asset but what an injustice meted out to her. I am proud of Sri Nithyananda Haldipur for his noble service in guru Maa's life. Maybe he is from Kannada speaking region. I wish he gives some insight into Maa Annapurna Devi in kannada language.

The man asking questions of her was making long speeches, and she was responding with one or two words. This is frustrating as questions should be short, and her responses were more important. Secondly, I don't know Bengali, and could not understand this part. English subtitles would have helped. Let me add here that Ravi Shanker treated his wife infamously, when during his marriage with her as a 17 year old, he was having an affair with another Muslim dancer girl from Uday Shankar's troop. Further, she was a superior instrumentalist who outshone her husband during the early performances they did together. So Ravi Shanker stopped doing jugalbandis with her. Her Maanj Khammaj is the most memorable recording of this raga on Sur Bahar that has never been bettered by anyone else. What a true artist was this great woman. After her separation from Ravi Shankar she never came into public life again, and we lost the gems that she could have imparted to the world. In her loneliness, she was thronged by those who wanted to learn with her. She never got anything in return for it. Ravi Shankar's mistreatment of her broke her heart.

Can't believe I witnessed something that people achieve after many births and years of seeking God. Shekhar Sen ji is not just fortunate himself he has made us all fortunate by showing this to us. Many many pranams to the legends in this video.

It is an undefinable pleasure to know that such extraordinary people existed in our country and me for one was totally ignorant of their presence and never made any effort to meet them or learn something fruitful from their extraordinary talents and personalities. This world would be incomplete without the Art of Alaudin khan saheb, bibi Annapurna devi saheba, Ali Akbar khan saheb , pandit Ravi shankar ji , Hari prasad chaurasia ji , and their associates.

Guru Ma Annapurna Devi is my inspiration in music. But for her one would have wondered whether Hindustani classical music has lost forever its spiritual touch. Ma Annapurna is the living link of the great musical heritage of age-old India with this otherwise decadent age we are living in.

I wish Shekhar Sen asked her some questions about her own life and music, rather than ask inane rhetorical questions about her father, much about what is already known.

@@NM-pz1zo She mostly spoke about her association with her father. Some of her statements translate to:
      1. Baba's music was pure. He taught all his students in the same manner. She has also followed the same path.
      2. She has focussed more on sadhana than performance.
      3. Baba settled in Maihar due to his devotion for Ma Sharda. She was named Annapurna as she was born on purnima (full moon) day.
      4. Baba never scolded her as she was a sincere student. Dada (Ali Akbar Khan) used to forget lessons or make mistakes, and had to face Baba's wrath :-)
Other statements are mostly in similar lines. I will watch again and write here if I missed anything interesting
