I'm pretty sure that no one who left a comment regarding Michael Brecker has earned the right to criticize Michael Brecker. Maybe everyone should stop making suggestions to a professional musician and just be thankful they can witness brilliance in action.
supahsekzy well that gives you the b9,11,b13,tonic but that's nothing new it's that he is insisting on a more polytonal thing. I mean the alt scale is just one note different.
How anyone could this less than 5 stars is beyond me. Michael Brecker was the greatest saxophonist of the last 35 years, and this just reaffirms that. Unbelievable - RIP.
The reason is that the notes that come out of our instruments, the patterns we play, the scales we use, and the way that we articulate and even sound on our horns is a product of EVERYTHING we have ever been exposed to musically as well as being the product of all the things we have chosen to practice.
This was recorded in a TV studio in Edinburgh in 1983 and featured a young Scottish saxophonist who went on to be a major voice in the idiom.....on the evening that this was recorded he arrived at a gig we were booked for and he was "punch-drunk" and told me that he's just seen / heard the best sax player ever....he was right!
Favourite saxophonist of all time. This solo is fucking genius, and I've watched this multiple times each day for the past few days. I gotta go and lift this. Jesus
Jon Christensen on drums. I love this video. I must have watched it a hundred times and the urgency and energy of Brecker's solo never fails to get my blood pumping!
No matter who anyone says...Incredible playing! Listen how he managed to use the diminished scale (Bb concert) trought the Rhythm changes...Just incredible! Remember that this is his sound...
My favorite tenor players are Michael Brecker, Joe Farrell, and Joe Henderson...pretty much in that order. If this video doesn't prove to you that Michael Brecker was the man, I don't know what it would take.
You guys did not just say Michael Brecker was "o.k." MICAHEL BRECKER was one of the best people who have ever touched a saxophone! He has a sound to which most modern day tenors try to emmulate. His ideas of harmonies are brilliant.
During his career, he was in great demand as a soloist and sideman. He performed with bands which spanned from mainstream jazz to mainstream rock. Altogether, he appeared on over 700 albums, either as a band member or a guest soloist. He put his stamp on numerous pop and rock recordings as a soloist. The Michael Brecker Band appeared in Pori Jazz 1998 Members: Brecker, Michael, sax Calderazzo, Joey, p Genus, James, b Peterson, Ralph, Dr. In the summer of 2004, Brecker was diagnosed with (MDS)
tearing it UP! i never heard the original-ish version of this song even tho i've played it a billion times... and solos over rhythm changes even more... great vid
NHOP and Brecker together, what a joy to see. Both lovely human beings and inspirational musicians. If anyone knows where I can see the rest of this broadcast, I would be indebted to them!
Dont forget Jon Christiansen, also a legendary danish drummer. Think he, Jan Garbareak, and Palle Danielsson (swe) made some records with Keith Jarrett. Jon is very famous for his free drumming, often just melodic (?) with a extremly disguised (or non existing) beat, but hey? On this clipp he is tearing the house down! I LOVE BRECKER around this time, such a monster. Seen him live a few time (he was quite ill then) and it was so beautiful. Missed by every lover of jazzmusic...Best, Sandemose
thats cool. Whatever floats your boat man. Hoepfully i will be attending one of those two schools, as they are my top two choices for when i graduate high school =]
U have me confused with someone else.I did not think he recycled. The solo was amazing ! He built tension nicely & kept it going till it peaked. Would love 2 see the whole clip 2 see him trade with the drums. His 8th notes had that wonderful snap to them. Makes U feel good to be alive.
One last thing, don't confuse speed with quality. Imagine someone new to the english language memorizing every word of Hamlet and then practicing reciting the whole thing as quickly as possible. Sure, it would be neat but all the beauty of rhyme, meter, and metaphor would be lost!
Yeah too bad he gone but it must be one hell of a jam session up there - Heaven I mean. Michael left us too soon but a least he can jam with Sonny and the other jazz greats. Thanks Man!!!
@bassdrumbone64 well my old private sax teacher was a bebop guy, not a post bop/contemporary jazz player. He rarely inserted tense chord harmonics like Michael brecker did at the beginning of his solo here. That's why my teacher would have got on me about that. He was a good teacher... helped me get good enough with jazz and improv to be in the maryland all state jazz band and get accepted to various reputable music schools w. scholarship offerings. I don't have a teacher now... looking....
. I finally realized that I NEVER would be able to and that is the beautiful thing about creating. Sure, you can learn their licks from a transcription or by using your ear(listening and figuring out the licks is the most beneficial way)and you can practice them until you are blue in the face. Then you can get on stage and try to paste those licks in every solo you have. Then you realize that making those licks fit cohesively into one of your solos is a hard thing to do
As a math professor (and jazz musician), I take umbrage with your thinly-veiled implication that the mastery of swing, harmony ("buring" if you will) is somehow incongrous with the rather nerdy look -- but I do agree that my man does tear that sh_t up!!
I forgot to mention that he also includes an mp3 sample of each solo that has a transcription. There are quite of few of these. I believe his site is The Best site about Michael Brecker online!
Hey Sidewalk, look up "everyday I thank you" here on UA-cam. You might like his sax playing there. Michael played and recorded with so many different people. Looking at his whole body of work...he's one of the greatest ever.
Niels Henning Ørsted pedersen on bass, the best there ever was. Jon Christensen on drums left us today, 18 Feb 2020, RIP to a giant.
RIP Jon, groove up there pal
Thanks for this... I should have recognized him by sound and sight but didn't... :(
Yeah l, but who's better jaco or nhop
@@rexmelgoza4703 I don't think you can (or should) compare them, they're both amazing in their own right.
I'm pretty sure that no one who left a comment regarding Michael Brecker has earned the right to criticize Michael Brecker. Maybe everyone should stop making suggestions to a professional musician and just be thankful they can witness brilliance in action.
First note of his solo, he's like "fuck ya'll, I'm gonna play in my own key" LOL
He was outlining a Bmaj7 over a Bb7 1-6-2-5. I mean like LAYING into a B, and then playing B major scale stuff over Bb7. Too much sauce
Sax players often do so.
supahsekzy well that gives you the b9,11,b13,tonic but that's nothing new it's that he is insisting on a more polytonal thing. I mean the alt scale is just one note different.
Tension -> Release. Repeat.
That’s breaker for ya. “I don’t give a flying shit about what key the song is in, WE IN B NOW”
How anyone could this less than 5 stars is beyond me. Michael Brecker was the greatest saxophonist of the last 35 years, and this just reaffirms that. Unbelievable - RIP.
Stars… damn
The best. Mike was and is the greatest. Great therapy for the ego if you are ever start feeling really good at Jazz
The reason is that the notes that come out of our instruments, the patterns we play, the scales we use, and the way that we articulate and even sound on our horns is a product of EVERYTHING we have ever been exposed to musically as well as being the product of all the things we have chosen to practice.

Favourite saxophonist of all time. This solo is fucking genius, and I've watched this multiple times each day for the past few days. I gotta go and lift this. Jesus
i like how he starts off on the flat 9, what a badass
He changed keys entirely to B major
Listening to this is truly humbling experience.
Wow. I've just started playing after a 45 year break. I've heard lots of Mike's work but nfer this. My God hecwas good. Probably the best ever. RIP.
I have to agree. Someone finally dethroned Bird. Michael Brecker, the GOAT
We will have his work to delight us forever... and he has gone to the stars, where he is shining now...
This guy put his soul in every note that he played, I really miss this guy!
Got no words to describe how i feel. You will be missed Michael.
best solo in the entire universe
I can' believe his chops , my favorite musician
Michael Brecker can play anything.
It does'nt matter what anybody thinks about his playing or about Coltrane playing, the music stands for itself...incredible playing!
I love Brecker.........great big sound and extensive harmonic knowledge.....and emotion....
Both Brecker and NHOP had an UNBELIEVABLE tone on their instruments. They could move mountains with their sound.
height of his powers...? great post thanks !
I'm so glad I got to meet this guy before he passed. Such a nice guy, and the best player of our generation imo.
that bass player is crazy good, anybody who can play oleo that fast on an upright has my respect
NHOP was the GOAT on upright.
AHHHHHH. He's just so crazy. How does he dominate so much?
Life is beautiful when I listen music like this man! Pure genius!
My favorite tenor players are Michael Brecker, Joe Farrell, and Joe Henderson...pretty much in that order. If this video doesn't prove to you that Michael Brecker was the man, I don't know what it would take.
Best solo on "Oleo" I ever heard. Who are 19 "dislikes?"
Agree. One of the best he played on that tune.
Brecker is a Legend. Wish the clip was longer though so I could have heard more of that smokin' hot bass solo!
this is simply amazing! my F-ing goodness! i almost cried... woooow man, much respect. Much respect!
The bassist is AMAZING!!!
5 stars for this
The great Dane Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen. Only he could play like this.
everybody just chill out and enjoy a song by the master Michael Brecker
OMG! Brecker is the man! It just goes to show that he can play 'traditionally' just as great as he can play contemporarily.
Haha Brecker caught me off guard at the beginning of the solo section. Then I realized he was playing in B instead of Bb.
He told me once “you know up a 1/2 step, down a 1/2 step”. 😊
Lol half steppin
Michael Brecker was the best saxophonist of his time
De cualquier tiempo! Técnica, sonido y fraseo irrepetible...
No coppens, there is no one that can hear the inadequacies of others and elucidate upon them quite as boldly and bluntly as you. Thank you!
You guys did not just say Michael Brecker was "o.k." MICAHEL BRECKER was one of the best people who have ever touched a saxophone! He has a sound to which most modern day tenors try to emmulate. His ideas of harmonies are brilliant.
Great playing.........
Most amazing Oleo solo ever!
its fun to recognize the brecker licks he uses. he uses many exakt licks in the skunk funk barcelona vid solo. hes such an amazing player
His bridge starting @ 1:54 is just bananas
great bebop
ahhhhhhh!!!!!!! brecker is so gooooood here. I got rhythm x 1,000,000
wonderful, just wonderful, how he starts his solo, only michael would do it that way
thanks a lot ! this was an amazing solo on changes!!!
Thanks forever MB!
michael brecker prohaps the most greatest modern tenor player of awer time yea
Marian Petrescu the best...
Marian Petrescu I’ve heard him called the best tenor player of the post Coltrane era
It does not get any more fiery than this!
As Dexter Gordon used to say "Niels Henning Orsted Peeeeeeeeeee-der-sen!"
What in the heck are you talking about? Can't you just listen at this incredible perfomance? This is Brecker and Pedersen at their best!!!!!
During his career, he was in great demand as a soloist and sideman. He performed with bands which spanned from mainstream jazz to mainstream rock. I had to concentrate just to hear to the changes...Playing it must take some real focus. I'm impressed!
With that bass-playyer.. Yiiahhaah. Probably the greatest moment in jazz and music history.
... and equally as hard attempting to play in this style is transcribing this solo in the first place. Wow Louis - you have my unwaivering respect.
tearing it UP! i never heard the original-ish version of this song even tho i've played it a billion times... and solos over rhythm changes even more... great vid
NHØP just sits down and play the best
brecker and nhop omg this is amazing!
Michael. #1 saxophonist.
NHOP and Brecker together, what a joy to see. Both lovely human beings and inspirational musicians. If anyone knows where I can see the rest of this broadcast, I would be indebted to them!
what an incredible trio.
ok firstly holy crap that bassist is tearing shit up. secondly how the hell do you start a solo on that note and make it sound so damn good
He put a lot of tension and released it 😎
Wow. Brecker's sure had a lot to say in that solo.
You mean like in every other Brecker solo?
Michael Brecker is one of the more expressive jazzman for me... here at his best !!!
The man was total genius.
Nothing more to say!
This needs a diorama not a transcription.
How can you possibly play better than this?!!! Probably the greatest straight ahead player ever...
I MISS BRECKER!!! KILLING!!!
Man...he's really kicking it.
That flat 9 is so damn hip!
Yeah thank god for CD's and UA-cam
THANKS !!!!!! FOR EVER
@Musicenthusiasm Who else can play with such intensity but keep such composure?
Enjoyment to my ears!!!
Rest in peace Michael. You ARE the man!

Damn!! that was brilliant !!! (picking my mouth off the floor).

Definitely different with Brecker though, I wouldn't say he compromises his lyricism
Yes, 15 years after my original comment I would agree!
Yeah too bad he gone but it must be one hell of a jam session up there - Heaven I mean. Michael left us too soon but a least he can jam with Sonny and the other jazz greats.
Thanks Man!!!
i fell asleep listening to this. when i woke up.....i felt stronger....more powerful
Superb. Pity about the NHOP solo being cut off
@bassdrumbone64 well my old private sax teacher was a bebop guy, not a post bop/contemporary jazz player. Best Straight-Ahead Tenor Player of All time
Steps Ahead?
Nagyon szuper az együttes gratulálok. a B" tenor Sax,nagyon jó imrovizálás .de mind nagyon jók.
nhop one of the greatest ever yea
As a math professor (and jazz musician), I take umbrage with your thinly-veiled implication that the mastery of swing, harmony ("buring" if you will) is somehow incongrous with the rather nerdy look -- but I do agree that my man does tear that sh_t up!!

NHØP, missed, missed, the one and only. Have heard the here cut "solo" and... say no more!
When i first heard that b9, i was glad i was already sitting on my ass
Hey Sidewalk, look up "everyday I thank you" here on UA-cam. You might like his sax playing there. Michael played and recorded with so many different people. Looking at his whole body of work...he's one of the greatest ever.
Grande Michael!!!!

i wonder what its like to play at this level every night. must be exhausting.
Awesome!
I would really have loved to hear that bass solo before the video cut off... otherwise brilliant stuff. Unbelievable
Mamma mia!!!!!!!!
The bassist is Niels Henning Orsted-Pedersen.
