First off, big fan of the vids. I learned how to form and reload 300 blackout watching your videos. I got mine up to 1800fps out of a 10.5" BA barrel using CFE BLK. It is a full case load, on the razors edge of compressed, at 2.204 oal with no pressure. Shooting .5 MOA and single digit SD. Several whitetail and hogs down. All hunting under or barely at 100yrds.
One of my favorite range loads is a 150 grain Core-Lokt with 16.8 grains of IMR 4227... Not sure velocities, but it's accurate enough and runs well. It's an inexpensive load as I got the bullets cheap a long time ago. My 110 grain TAC-TX load is 18.5 grains of 300-MP. I'm getting 2250 FPS and MOA accuracy with a red dot... 16" barrel for both!
I get really accurate rounds loading those Core-Lokts. The challenge is to get expansion with the lower velocity of 300 BO, which is the purpose of the special Speer bullets.

Cool video, your loading methodology and videography are impeccable. I bought a 300 blackout upper for deer hunting in thick hardwoods and love it. I only have time for shooting factory loads now but my brother has dies. With the constant barrage of new calibers I worry that the blackout may be harder to find in factory loads.
I worked a load up for my son's 300 BLK last summer. 125 gr. Cavity Back MKZ with 18.0 grains of H110. Just under 1 MOA @ 2185 fps with a SD of 3.5 fps. He smoked an 8 pt. on Christmas Eve with this load. 65 yards and dropped him in his tracks with a pass through behind the shoulder shot. I'm thinking about trying these in 6.5 Grendel.

Nice you know how to lob them in with hold over. I myself find it foolish to deal with hold overs in deer hunting situations. I limit the 300 black out to 125 to 150 yards point blank tops. It's always best to shoot a rifle of point-blank capability for your maximum shot range. I have lots of rifles and lots of choices but point blank will get the deer all of the time with zero mental errors in hold over.

Great video man. I put a300 blackout together because of this channel. It’s now my favorite thing to shoot since I got a can especially. Learned it all here. I would love to see the gel tests for the Tac-tx bullets if you can fit it in sometime!!!
Good test. I know you were going for the 150gn but I’ve loved the 125gn TNTs in my 9.5” and 16” blackout barrels. Would have liked to see that side by side with these in terms of expansion.
Yeah.....I really wish he did a side-by-side with the TNT's rather than the Hot Cores. Just sayin. My "hot" go to gound for the 300bo is the 125gr tnt.
I'm kinda "meh" on the 150 GD for BLK. Tried them out of my 10.5" pistol. Got decent accuracy, but when I ran the numbers, the 110 TAC-TX at 2350 has more energy and much better expansion. So I'm sticking with the Barnes for now. Not sure what to do with my other box of GDs... Sounds familiar...
Same here. Anything over 120 gr you start losing too much powder capacity on top of trying to push a heavier projectile. If you go any heavier, might as well just use subs.
o yes thanks for doing this test. i bought a few boxes of each when they were on sale. had not loaded them yet. loading them with lil'gun powder i hoping get a nice load close to 2000 in a 16 in barrel. at lest that is is my goal. cheers.
When I 1st got into thermal hog hunting and suppressors I naturally started playing with 300 Blackout. I've owned uppers from 7.5 to 16 inch and I loved how quiet it was and carrying a SBR around all night is nice because they're lite but I started losing hogs a lot especially once they got out there over 100 yards or when I was using subsonic ammo even at closer ranges. All the guys I hunted with went through the 300 Blackout phase but they all went back to their AR's chambered in things like 6.5 Grendel or 6.8SPC. But we also hunt for landowners on farms and ranches so we need to kill hogs every chance we get and the 300 Blackout limited us to the shorter ranges. Not to mention if a hog runs a couple hundred yards at night you'll never find them and that meant we we're littering the properties with dead hogs instead of us hauling them off to the bone yards like the landowners wanted us to do. I'd love to see what that Blackout Gold Dot will do out of a 308 even at normal velocities to see if they hold together... Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
@@extractandeject6934 I didn't I honestly just got tired of messing with it and I wasn't reloading for 300 Blackout. It's not a bad cartridge and if you know it's limits it'll get the job done but I was shooting AR15's in 223, 6.5 Grendel and 7.62×39mm. I even hunted pretty regularly with an AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor so I was use to having a lot more range and better bullet performance. I might give it a try again in the future because I really wanted to like it but for what I do there's better options...
Would definitely be interested in seeing the blackout bullet loaded at a “light” 308 and even a full velocity 308 shot into gel. May be a great 308 hunting bullet with massive expansion.
It will explode, its not made for those velocities. In that regard its hardly any diffrent from any other lead bullet in same weight. It wont expand past a certain ammount. What you will loose is terminal performance, to much energy will be lost in the beginning. Just use the 168 wich is designed for the 308.. I would not want to eat the meat you use this on 3000fps or whatever velocity you use it on. And for varmint, thin skinned animals, you really want something with a ballistic tip or hollow point.
@@jmkhenka I don’t think the expansion in this test was anywhere near the point of coming apart. I use the 62 gold dot in 22-250 and it holds together even at those velocities. Besides even full throttle 308 isn’t likely to get a 150 over 3000 fps.
So it would act like a much heavier Speer TNT round, of which the 30cal is something like 120 or 125. Personally I would have preferred to see the BLK Gold Dot to be in the 115-125 (or both options) weights. I’m sure Speer tested those weights but I just think the caliber performs better at 115-125.
If those blocks strong coffee color, I must be drinking crude oil. I was hoping those would open more at slower speeds. I vote you ramp them up with h110. I’d be a little leary of those in 30-30 with that meplat though, at least in tube 30-30.
Speer's online data shows that you can get up to 2150 fps with Lil' Gun. This would stay above 1700 fps until about 275 yards. I'm not sure what barrel length Speer's data is with and I know a lot of people don't like Lil' Gun in .300BO, but might be worth a try.
Nice! New 300 blackout video. I’ve watched probably 40-50 of your videos. Is there a reason why you don’t use a progressive? If you’ve mentioned it before I may not have seen the answer. Thanks for the answer and your time making these videos.
It would be interesting to see what the expansion would be if it was loaded closer to factory loaded velocity. Looking at Sierra data for 150gr projectiles I think an H110 or CFEBLK load would get you to 1900FPS or better
If you have not seen it yet, the Sig Sierra 3 (and 6 if you have deeper pockets) riflescope is pretty amazing. You can save various loads in profiles for a quick switch between different loads. I have one on my .458 socom.
The nutcracker style bullet puller in the back - testing it? My hunting partner always uses 150 grain factory SP bullets in his 300 BO pistol for deer hunting under 150 yards. We have never had to look for one. Great results.
we'll all miss you johnny, I'm not one of your Patrion supporter's but I will be if you're not quitting. but I have a feeling you are, can't say I blame you with all UA-cam's shenanigans. Hope you have good one man
Got some of these for 7.62x40WT a couple years back. I’ve had to guesstimate load data for CFEblk since I can’t find 1680 or data for it (not even from hodgdon or Wilson combat😐), but you can get a healthy bump in velocity over blackout. plus the slower twist and tighter chamber / throat “super optimized” barrel absolutely stacks them in. Should be getting 2,400-2,500 fps with a compressed max charge with the 125 grain TNT’s, not 100% on the 150’s but I’d guess 2,000-2,100 fps with more or less 100% fill/ max. These gold dots grouped really well but I don’t have terminated performance data yet.
Looks like a little more load work up. I tend to run in .2 increments until I Find a node. Then I do the odd numbers on ether side. While there may be multiple nodes I tend to grab the best group. If 2-3 groups are similar I load to the lower node to conserve powder and barrel. Just my weird tweek.
Don't you typically measure the 1st few resized cases with a case gauge to determine how the resizing is going...? I've found it can save a lot of extra work later on. P.S. What about using small rifle magnum primers for 300 BLK: I've seen quite a few listed in various load data sources...?
Not sure if you are interested, I use Enforcer with my 150's and they fly WAY better than W296 in terms of accuracy and velocity. Would be kinda cool to see you have a face off with those two???
The 150GD is an odd weight. Speer makes a 123gr .310 for AKs. Would be interested to see you try some out in 300blk, either resized or just loaded and see what they do. Also the GDs are duty type projectiles rather than hunting oriented. They do really well against barriers and vehicle glass.
I wouldn't try it. It's a couple thousandths larger then the .308 for blackout. Doesn't sound like much but it increases the chances of a bullet stuck in the barrel. If not, performance would be severely effected. Plus the there's 120, 125gr loads in blackout too
I vote for trying to get more velocity from the blackout with another powder and see how these do. For some reason, across the board, I have seen best accuracy with my blackout using Winchester small rifle primers
Great work. I've been working up a load for hornady 110gr v-max using 19gr of hodgdon h110. Shooting these supersonic out of a 8.5" ar pistol. Hopefully there won't be to much unburnt powder and it will cycle consistantly.
Still looking forward to seeing the 62 gr golddot in the .22-250. Curious what velocity will be capable, if it will stabilize, and I bet the gold dot will be up to the task of holding together. Maybe a good deer load for the caliber.
I actually emailed Speer about the lowest velocity at which those bullets will reliably expand, and IIRC the guy said something like 1200-1300 fps. I bought a box back when you still could and planned on using not only in my 300 BO but my .308 AR pistol with a 10" barrel.
Where did you get them? I can't find them anywhere. These are fantastic on whitetail deer. I use Lil gun and the expansion was great on the animal I was able to recover the bullet from. My longest distance is 150 yards and have taken deer at 50 to 65 yards none ran further than 25 yards. I don't think it would be good much further than 150. 1.5" group at 100 yards with my load and that seems standard for my barrel
I just loaded a bunch of these bullets last Friday to do the same test in my new jell block's. You beet me to it I loaded them in 300 blk. 308 win. and 300 wsm. Now I'm kinda thinking I'm wasting bullets. Good video a little disappointed with the result. I thought they would mushroom better at lower velocity
OK, I'm a fan and I've watched your channel for some time now, however I would like to ask a question. I have an unfired Armalite AR10T with a 24" stainless factory barrel in 308 that I would like to shoot as well as some of your efforts. I have a batch of Tubbs break-in bullets and I will follow the instructions, 10 rounds followed by cleaning, x5. After that where would you suggest I start to develop a "go to load"? It would be nice to get groups in the sub 1" @ 100 yards as you seem to do with regularity. Do you think it is attainable with a factory barrel? Thanks
I would love to see these in a light load 308, but also at full velocity to see how far she can stretch out in ballistics gel. Also if you could try some 168 grain gold dots in the 308 that would be cool.
Hello Johnny my question is not related to this video, but about anyone of your videos where you check your reloaded rounds in your AR receivers seeing if they will cycle. Do you remove the ejector spring from the bolt when you do this? Thank You.
Based on this I got no use for 150’s in the 300. If you’re taking requests midway has 125 tipped gamechanger factory seconds. I was told by Sierra they would expand well down to 1700 ft/sec.
@JohnnysReloadingBench My first 300 BO was Hornaday 150 FMJBT BR4 ACC 1680 @18.0 to 19.2 grns .4 steps gave me 10 shot groups in the sub 1 inch, SDs were crap but I found I had the die set wrong and had no crimp this was my first ever load 16" barrel unsupressed ( Illinois has stupid bans No SBRs or suppressors ) they make a near identical HPBT and SPBT
Im really curious if the 300 BLK-OUT version would do at 308 velocities. Would it frag. or mushroom amazingly well. You really need the Lee ball cutter and a case prep station. Easier on the hands. Can you work in some more K31 content?
I recognize the Lee case feeder as I had one on a Pro 1000 about 30 years ago. I do not recognize the press. It has to have a pass through shell holder. That would be an ideal setup for all of my .223 and .30-30 based wildcats. Can you please let me know what all is included in your set up? Or send me a link to a video if you have one? Thanks!
Looking at speers loaded ammo, they shows a muzzle velocity of 1900fps and a velocity of about 1675 at 100yds. Using speers data with accurate 1680 i was able to get up to 1982fps at max.l out of a psa 16in upper.
I dont know as much as someone else. But if I'm not mistaken 300blk out barrels are commonly made for heavy bullets. Maybe if you had a slower twist rate it could improve at least the accuracy. As for mushrooming something like the 30-30 or 7.62x39 may provide better capabilities.
Idk, my 16inch 1n8 twist 300blackout is damn near doing single holes with 125gr PPU FMJ. 3 holes touching at 100yrds. As for the barrels they tend to pick twist rates that work for both subs and supers....which is why you commonly see 1n8 or 1n7. 1n5 exists too in a 5inch barrel. 7.62x39 bullets are too big at .310 diameter. 300blackout uses .308 projectiles. Loading .310s would have negative impact on performance or worse you get bullets stuck in the barrel if they even chamber
You didn't mention it, but where most of the Hotcores penciling straight through the gel? I saw only one recovered, but when watching the gel, it looked like several bullets passed through.
I used 150 gr gold dots for my 8.5" 300 BO and it was one of the more accurate bullets if have used. They are just expensive, but that was the only downside.
I’ve been waiting to see the round nose bullets like the interlock get tested for years now lol. Also for the sake of tests, I’d strongly recommend getting a 1:7 twist barrel for the heavier bullets. Noticed some of the old videos with the Lehighs and makers for example having slight wobble. No expert here, but gotta think a 1:7 (that isn’t a silly carbine gas!) would be perfect for that
If you do 308 light loads, H4895 has instructions for, I think, 70% max loads. I've done them for just fun messing around in other calibers, and even 2200 fps is fun on paper or steel; targets don't have to be punched at 2750 fps. I think a low power 308 would be a fantastic youth load.
Definitely a reduced load 308 is a great option. I would think that it would be a good hog bullet still. Maybe just maybe a home defense in a rural setting for all kinds of 2 & 4 legged critters. Not a failure for sure.
I found that using Bluetooth with Lab Radar drained it's battery much quicker and it was constantly loosing connection with my Android phone. How's your connection? Also was was very frustrated with how you need to put the setting in handgun mode to track these velocities, lots of ammo wasted, you would think that a $500 device would be able to autotune it's setting after the 1st shot. Also I noticed in the last video you got 7000+ fps in one of your shots, I get that quite often, anywhere from 7k to 20k fps and can't figure out what's causing it but beginning to suspect that the muzzle blast might be rocking my tripod and that's what's causing it. I found that my tripod head needs some tightening.
Since your original comparison was with the Defensive (Personal Protection) factory load and its parameters (i.e., expansion from shorter barrels, etc.), I'd wouldn't think expansion would be as critical an attribute as accuracy, versus the development of a 300 BLK load for hunting purposes...? P.S. These bullets (well, MOST of them) are also commonly used at 308 velocities.
I understand about getting a reduced velocity to simulate impact velocity at 100 yards, but why pistol powder for the load development? Wouldn’t something like 1680, SWBO or CFE Blk be more appropriate for 150 gr supersonic?
Because you need a fast burning power due to the small case capacity and generally shorter barrels people run on their 300blks or you shit unburned powder all over the place.
Hey JRB = I learn much from your videos, so thank you and please keep them coming. Where do you Find your primers? I have plenty of small rifle primers, however I am running low on large rifle primers and I have not located a source. Midway, Midsouth and all others are out of stock, any advice would be most helpful.
I just got a kilo of clear blue petg delivered last night to play with today. I noticed those 3d printed cats too lmao. I have another ender 3v2 to assemble as well. Because two print twice as fast as one printer, right? 😃
as a non hunter is their anything lacking in the performance of the hot core bullet? or is it that marketing campaigns are never for old fashioned soft points.
What about expansion in a shorter barrel like 8.5 inch without a suppressor I'm trying to find a bullet that will expan reliable with a 8.5 inch barrel and no suppressor
@@JohnnysReloadingBench thanks I thought the suppressor added length in return added more pressure but thanks again for your advice love your videos and I trust your opinion

Yeah.....I really wish he did a side-by-side with the TNT's rather than the Hot Cores. Just sayin. My "hot" go to gound for the 300bo is the 125gr tnt.
What happened to the Monday night live chat. I started it and tried to watch the rest later and it was gone.
The 110-125 have been working great for me.
@@benjaminnevins5211 yep, that’s the weight range I stay in too
o yes thanks for doing this test. i bought a few boxes of each when they were on sale. had not loaded them yet. loading them with lil'gun powder i hoping get a nice load close to 2000 in a 16 in barrel. at lest that is is my goal.
Did you try Barnes 110 gr Tac-Tx?
@@extractandeject6934 I didn't I honestly just got tired of messing with it and I wasn't reloading for 300 Blackout. It's not a bad cartridge and if you know it's limits it'll get the job done but I was shooting AR15's in 223, 6.5 Grendel and 7.62×39mm. I even hunted pretty regularly with an AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor so I was use to having a lot more range and better bullet performance. I might give it a try again in the future because I really wanted to like it but for what I do there's better options...
Love this channel thanks so much for these videos
Would definitely be interested in seeing the blackout bullet loaded at a “light” 308 and even a full velocity 308 shot into gel. May be a great 308 hunting bullet with massive expansion.
I was thinking the same thing, and if they come apart at full 308 velocity they could be a good varmint/coyote load.
I think a 308 load opens-up a lot of choices, a lot more room to play.
Thanks for the video god I love reloading, shooting, data ! Hope all is well.
If those blocks strong coffee color, I must be drinking crude oil. I was hoping those would open more at slower speeds. I vote you ramp them up with h110. I’d be a little leary of those in 30-30 with that meplat though, at least in tube 30-30.
So funny you brought up the Barnes Tac video. I was just looking through all your old on that bullet last night. I was hoping for a gel test.
Those are good choices. Both like to be compressed.
I used H110 for my 125g-150g anything more i like the CFEBLK
If you have not seen it yet, the Sig Sierra 3 (and 6 if you have deeper pockets) riflescope is pretty amazing. You can save various loads in profiles for a quick switch between different loads. I have one on my .458 socom.
The nutcracker style bullet puller in the back - testing it? My hunting partner always uses 150 grain factory SP bullets in his 300 BO pistol for deer hunting under 150 yards. We have never had to look for one. Great results.

Anyone know what happens to Mondays video? It just disappeared while I was watching Monday.
we'll all miss you johnny, I'm not one of your Patrion supporter's but I will be if you're not quitting. but I have a feeling you are, can't say I blame you with all UA-cam's shenanigans. Hope you have good one man
Great video. Tiny bug holes are great, but this is way more informative. See how fast you can get them in 300 WM with a gel test and a 308 youth load.
The barnes is the only bullet I use for hunting with a 300 blackout. I like the gold dots and federal fusions for all my other calibers though.
Check out the 300 HAMR if you haven't...that is your 30-30 in an AR
Plus the there's 120, 125gr loads in blackout too
@@D41Michigan They can be resized in a push-thru sizer.
Even with having to make adjustments it's still faster resizing the cases than on a press and hand loading every one.
I've had them for several years
I just loaded a bunch of these bullets last Friday to do the same test in my new jell block's. You beet me to it
I loaded them in 300 blk. 308 win. and 300 wsm. Now I'm kinda thinking I'm wasting bullets.
Good video a little disappointed with the result. I thought they would mushroom better at lower velocity
Sir, I can not find data to load Berry's 150gr. BLACKOUT with a max velocity of 1650. Any ideas where else I may look? Thanks in advance!
Yeah i don't load anything above 125gr in 300blk. Speed killz.
WOW. Interesting stuff. Thank you.
Yay! Reloading stuff!
Im really curious if the 300 BLK-OUT version would do at 308 velocities. Would it frag. or mushroom amazingly well.
You really need the Lee ball cutter and a case prep station. Easier on the hands.
Can you work in some more K31 content?
I use 20.0 grains of 1680 in the 147 FMJ weight. Seem to be very accurate and attains approximately 1900 feet per second from my 16-inch barrel.
The hot cors and the regular gold dots both had several pass throughs.
I’ve got some I’ve considered trying in a 308 load, probably would have massive expansion at 2000 + fps.
I used 150 gr gold dots for my 8.5" 300 BO and it was one of the more accurate bullets if have used. They are just expensive, but that was the only downside.
I have had good luck 2 deer and a hog this year with the 110 grain varmageddon bullets.
Are you aware that the red powder measure cap fits1lb bottles? Probably 8lb bottles too but there may be interference issues.
No expert here, but gotta think a 1:7 (that isn’t a silly carbine gas!) would be perfect for that
What is the press you are using to size with.
This is why i went for the barnes tac 120 gr instead of the gold dot tac out preformed the gold dot in all areas
I like the 120 gr too. They are pricey, but nothing when you figure the cost of a hunt and they are Lead-free too.
The federal power Shok and federal fusion are the same bullet loaded to the same velocity as the 150 grain gold dot
You’re correct, Hodgdon has information for reduced loads with H4895 on their web site. They call it the 60% formula. 👍🏻
Definitely a reduced load 308 is a great option. I would think that it would be a good hog bullet still.
Maybe just maybe a home defense in a rural setting for all kinds of 2 & 4 legged critters. Not a failure for sure.
And what camera and software are you running to record the shot impacts? That is a neat setup.
Is the on screen tracking all the labradar? Or is there another program/app running to get the grouping?
It is an electronic target system called Shot Marker ua-cam.com/video/NH1Oe_DPREI/v-deo.html
jonnhy have you seen that 190g hornady bullet made for the blackout?
300 HamR, it is everything a blackout isn't'. 30-30 ballistics in an Ar, easy to load, a barrel swap & some horsepower!
now do subsonics
@Johnny's Reloading Bench YES ON 300 HAM'R! It was made for a reloader! You gotta get into it.
We need more cameras. Scope cam, over the shoulder cam, drone cam, chicken cam
They do it to have just a little more surface area for the neck to grab and because the metal is just ever so slightly softer is what I heard.
I would enjoy a quick video on the Barnes tac tx expansion video
What is the press you were using to size your cases?
Once you settle on a powder, do you test various COAL's to try to tune your groups tighter?
Whoever built the minigun needs to get busy on making presses. That guy knows how to move bullets through a machine without jamming itself all up.
Well, sorta.
If the minigun action has a misfire it just extracts the round and drops it out, no recoil is necessary for the action.
Which press and brass feeder were you using to size the brass? Looks cool.
300 BO is basically a very magnum pistol round. It is why powders like Win 296/H110 are so popular in 300 BO
Because you need a fast burning power due to the small case capacity and generally shorter barrels people run on their 300blks or you shit unburned powder all over the place.
Hey JRB = I learn much from your videos, so thank you and please keep them coming. Where do you

What about expansion in a shorter barrel like 8.5 inch without a suppressor I'm trying to find a bullet that will expan reliable with a 8.5 inch barrel and no suppressor
The suppressor has no bearing on whether or not a bullet will expand. This bullet or the Barnes Tac-TX would work just fine for your application.
