This is absolutely awesome! I am getting back into ham radio and this is extremely hackish and cool. This is the ultimate howto video for doing ft8 on the lowest budget possible, all in less than 5 minutes. This is totally killer. Great job! I am going to copy your exact setup.
Good job. Yours is exactly what a 'How to' video should be like. I'll wire it up this week for my (tr)uSDX.
Great first Video ! 73, Manuel; DL2MAN
Thank you, it’s an awesome little radio :)
Great job.
This is a fine example of what amateur radio is supposed to be.
Learning and sharing.
Glad you decided to post this information for the rest of us.
It’s very helpful when your trying to decide what solution you want to utilize.
Knowing I can run digital modes on this unit is very helpful.

Excellent ! Finally, this is not really complicated to do, but you took the time to find it. Thanks to share this.
Glad it helped hope you catch you on the band
This little rig looks on track to become the next FT817
Good idea cutting the wire in the cable I was planning on making a special cable so thanks for the video.
I'm thinking about using this radio for POTA so thank you for creating this video!
Very cool! Mine should be here shortly & I believe you just saved me some major headaches! Thank you for the WSJT-x config too.
Glad it was helpful, Enjoy the new radio.
Really cool setup! Great troubleshooting. I need to try this with mine.
Beautiful!! Great video and nicely done! 🤘📻⚡️Thanks!
Great Hack on the cable Mate. I had issues with drivers on those external sound cards when ever pc updated.
Great demo! Thank you very much!
Spot on. Thanks
Thank you so much for these setup Infos!
I first encountered these mic connection problems with an external hand micro, but i was able to solve this with an audio splitter cable, wich separates mic and speaker.
But for WSJT-X and plugging the cable into the PC speaker-out this did not work out. So i had to try your cable cutting method wich works great.
It is running on Win10 and Ubuntu20.4 now.

That’s awesome, glad it worked for you. Enjoy, hope to get you in the log
Great video! Thank you!
Awesome. But my radio is orange… will it still work? 😂 😂. Thank you for this great tip!
Should definitely still work. They are all the same hardware inside just a different case color.
your did very good on the VIDEO
Did you ever figure out how to dertermine what the tx power setting needs to be?
Well done...!!!!
Great Video! Going to give this a whirl. I had been planning to try VOX control, but if it's just as simple as snipping one of the cables, that might be what I'll try first! Never used FT8, so somewhat green to the whole process in general. I assume TS-480 settings are simple enough to enter into WSJT-x.
Thanks, glad it was helpfully. you will need to install a driver as well but thats pretty easy. here are the settings i used.
- Command Set: Kenwood TS450 or TS480
- Baud Rate: 38400
- 8 data 1 Stop
- PTT via CAT Command
For the connection, you need to have installed the CH340 USB Driver on your Computer first.
Good job Chad, Mario VE3WPZ
Thanks Mario
Can you add a schematic diagram of your FT8 cable mod?
you could also just use a mono cable
You definitely could do that, thanks for watching.
I must be stupid. Ive made the cable as per dl2man video for digi operating, and using vox to trigger the small sota amp. However im experiencing the same thing , once triggered tx, it stays in tx mode. Can you please compare ur cabel and dl2man cable ?
Hi Cap. The mic cable does have any special change to link mic to pc? TKS 73 PU2AOO
Oi, é possível chavear morse cw via cat? muito obrigado
Will that radio run WSPR?
Yes you can used it with WSPR, I’ve set it up and it works good. If you power the radio only with the usb you will output at 400-500 milliwatts.
Could you do a step by step WSPR setup? I would really appreciate that. I have trouble following many of the you tubers. I understand you very well. I think it called not being under 40 anymore plus I was middle age plus when the desk top computer came out.
🤍
Thank you 😊
Has anyone made a HRD 'radio; setup script for this truSDR? Could be really handy to control all the settings via HRD or PC control program. de N6JSX/8, [HAM for 50yrs]
