My tr(u)sdx will probably be in the mailbox within the hour of me typing this. I was working on a portable paddle design, but the one you showed is just about perfect. I guess I'll just have to make a small USB rig interface custom for the radio instead. 🙂 Clever EFHW too. I like building it around the connector like that.
Thanks Kevin. I’m honored that you watched. I’ve learned a lot from you in your videos. You can contact Adam K6ARK for info on the paddles and the efhw kit at www.k6ark.com/
This is so cool, portable setup, and custom made from I what I can tell. Would be really useful in emergencies. I'm clueless on radio stuff, maybe I should get my licence and learn more about it. And custom electronics is also very interesting.
Have you gotten your license yet? It is a fascinating hobby. The radio isn’t custom though. The battery pack is just stuck on with double sided tape. Nothing fancy.
Hmmm even the same color .... hi hi hi =) I was pondering what bag or pack for it and looks like you might have a winner =) I have a Elecraft T-1 tuner and ZIP CORD dipole antennas / feedline for each band =) I use 8 - AA battery pack to feed my rig =) I like your idea 14500 Li ion though or even 18650's =) Good job on the setup =)
Great video! I'm going with an 8 cell "AA" battery holder, and into an LDG QRP autotuner... Of course, it won't fit into that small a case! 73 DE W8LV BILL
The pouch is one I purchased from a friend several years ago, and I don’t see the exact same one on the maxpedition website. The M1 waistepack appears to be the most similar. www.maxpedition.com/collections/pouches/products/m-1-waistpack
I think that particular one was the anemone. As shown, it's perfect for this neat kit, and of course it's discontinued like all the good stuff. They make one similar called the pup that's very similar, but has Velcro instead of the buckle. There's plenty of similar models by other manufacturers. Blue falcon makes one really close.
This setup is my ideal portable unit. In my current job I travel at least 1wk/month. Being able to carry HF along would be amazing. So, this rig or the Venus SW-3B?
Just fwiw… I just did my first cw pota activation with this rig. It was working fine when I ended. When I got the radio out the next morning it will not transmit. Not sure what’s going on yet.
I was thinking if the combined 14,8v might be a bit high for the finals of this trx? Could you share some more experience if the radio is holding up fine when running it with the 4xbattery pack? tnx es vy 73 de Leo DL2COM
Thanks Stephane. At the time of recording this video my impression was that the antenna was fairly reliable so I didn’t always checked swr before transmitting. I have had a few problems with it lately, so I do check it routinely now. I usually get swr less than 1.5:1 depending on how I set up the antenna. Usually just varying the height of the matching unit above the ground has a significant effect on swr.
What power supply are you using? Is that the DL1DN designed option? I fitted the DL2MAN one yesterday and it’s just too bulky takes away from the ease of pack up and transport.
The battery holder shown here is a 4 x 14500 cell stuck to the end of the trusdx with double sided foam mounting tape. It covers up the PA and USB ports, which I never use. It provides about 16v to the radio which makes some people uncomfortable. Now I mostly use 3 x 18650 cell holders secured to the back of the radio with heavy duty Velcro. I detach the battery to pack up the radio.
Just curious about the battery pack. Looks like 4 AA batteries for about 6 volts but that doesn’t seem like enough voltage. Would you describe it please. I’m thinking about getting a (tr) uSDR myself. How do you like it? I’m a QRO op but the POTA world looks like fun. Thanks for sharing. WB5JWI

The antenna is an end fed half wave. No coax. The matching unit attaches directly to the radio. I just spread the wire out on the ground first, then tied one end to a branch. Then I draped the wire over some low branches back to the radio. It was certainly nvis.
