I've got to say, this is my favorite chess series on any chess channel ever!
I'm a 1700 in rapid, and i didnt think i'd learn all that much in the triple digits but I have learned a ton. And have watched every video in the series.
My biggest take away, i'm a tactics guy with garbage opening knowledge and bad positional play.
You've really helped me learn how to read the board from a positional stand point.

I started almost a month back and i am 980...how can i proceed brother I am losing to 1000 rated players....same issues bad opening and positional gameplay
@stayinspired1271 you're doing really well if you're on the cusp of 1000 with only a month of play. Better than me, for sure.
To break into 1000, just develop all your pieces quickly and avoid making any big mistakes, i.e. hanging pieces, obvious forks, etc... I'll still make those mistakes, but it's rare, once every five games or something.
Since your strength is in tactics like me, focus on complicating the situation, making it dynamic, with piece and pawn tension (pieces or pawns starring at each other without taking each other,) and pins. The more the better. Whenever I make a come back from being down material, it's from me complicating the situation and seeing through it better than my opponent. They miss a pin, and i can take a piece that looks protected for free, or i see a better order on how to break the tension between all the pieces that allows me to come out on top. That sort of thing.
If you're struggling with time, for example, in rapid, drop down to faster time controls like blitz or even bullet for a while. When you come back to 10 min rapid, it'll feel like you have all the time in the world to make calculations. My biggest jumps in elo have always been right after I come back from a faster time control.
One last tip, work on end games. I hated trading queens bc I hated end games. So studying end games helped a lot. Now I'm neutral on trading queens. And happy with it, if it will allow me to get a pawn for free or even just develop a piece so I'm ahead on development.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll be flying past 1000 and even going up to 1500, 1600, 1700 in no time. Especially with how quickly you've nearly made it to 1000.

I have the odd games where my play is ranked around 1400 or even higher, and have a 60+% win rate with a friend who's ranked 1100+, but struggling to get past the mid 900s...ultimately for similar reasons. Make too many silly mistakes and then get on a mental losing streak. ELO crashes back to the 800s.
This series is proving to be invaluable for me in learning how to approach every move psychologically.

Nelson brought up something I’ve long felt, some 1000 opponents can play competitive games and hang for a while against even titled players. Or they can spot some tricky tactics.
The lower rated players won’t win, but for those that are in that rating range, chess is flipping hard whether your 1000 or 2000 or more.

18:27 One thing that I just noticed is that after Qxc3, Bxa7, Qa3+ is a fork that picks up the bishop.

i love seeing the thought process behind every move, there's really so much to think about. I had an easy time climbing up to 1000 elo but as soon as I got there I realized that there are so many more things to consider in every position, otherwise these players will cook me

Don't fall for the short videos trend, everybody does that. We dont get to learn much from it, now your unique point is these kind of videos, which is a rarity elsewhere.
I don't mind if the videos are less long, I'd watch one hour long games but if it's troublesome for some of us to watch they can be 30-40 minutes long and I'm happy with it.

I'm really loving this series! Very educational. I can relate about the 1000 rated players 😂. I'm currently 1200 at rapid because I'm applying the the thoughts and tactics that I'm learning from your videos. However, I still dont know many openings and traps so I still lose a lot😅

another example of studying openings when you're not at an advanced level. every time i see players making mistakes after the opening memorization runs out, i think back to josh waitzkin's chessmaster series in which he always said chess study should focus on the endgame first, middlegame after and then opening. his argument was once your opening theory runs out, you're moving further and further away from what you know and into what the opponent knows (if he studied chess from the endgame). as a kid josh's quotes is how i learned chess and i love to see nelson using similar quotes to showcase principles. "knight on f8 there's no mate" was a great one to remember.

I genuinely think ur videos are the best instructional videos out there. I am 1600 an still find value in the tactics u show. Also I recommend these videos to any new player I meet so they can learn the stuff u teach as u explain it it in an amazing way. How would you recommend studying openings? I'm similar to the last game. Decent at tactics but I suffer quite a bit in the opening
13:16 A really interesting move in this position was Bg4, the pawn can't take the bishop bc it's checkmate right after with Qf2##, altough im not really sure if that move is helpful at all if white just ignores it.

Hello Nelson, I have really enjoyed this rating climb series. I’m a semi retired, play a lot of chess , my best rating has been around 1350. Last night I lost 3 games to the same lower rated opponent. I would love to see you play against the center game , I seem to lose against that opening every time.
I like how you mention to your viewers the distinction between lower rated opponents and higher rated; namely, the careless blunders. I think it's also worth mentioning that for example at 36:24, lower rated players tend to try and be TOO clever without thinking through if the tactic actually works. They essentially are just jumping in with their idea and hoping that everything turns out okay, when if they were to simply calculate one more move, they would see there is an easy response which makes their move a blunder and the 'tactic' fail.
The queen move at 10:25 looks nice. I think I will have to try that in a couple of games if I get this position. I am rated ca 700 in blitz and 1000 in rapid. I play mostly blitz (5+5).

This is the best explanation I've ever seen on how to think and calculate in chess. Hikaru Nakamura has some good streams with explanations, but this series is the best by far.

nice climb series, I just have a little bit hard to apply this to my own games (im 1100) because you can all the "best" moves for every opening and I dont, so how should I think if I dont know the "right" move for a specific opening like in this first game?
Just study an opening for 5-10 moves and stick to it. Practice more on tactics and positions than opening until you reach atleast 1500.
I am 675 10 min rapid, I don’t think memorizing is a big difference maker at the level we play, EXCEPT positionally. If you can understand the pieces movements you’re really either just defending or attacking albeit at the expense of your positions

Nelson is like obiwan playing chess: You will play knight to b6 and open that file for my queen. Opponent: Ill play nb6 and open the file for the queen.
In your second game, after you pinned his rook to his king, you pre-moved the capture of the rook. Instead, you could have looked to see if would move a pawn (which I think he did although you were playing those moves so quickly it was hard to tell) which would have allowed you to push your pawn and attack his pinned rook. You could have won a whole rook rather than an exchange. In other words, don't always assume the opponent is going to move his king to break the pin.
Reaction when dropping below 1 minute: Nelson: "I'd like to simplify." Me: "AAAAHCRAPCRAPCRAPPANIC!!!!"
I think Nelson is right about how different intermediate players have different skill sets as I'm 1200 and I usually play poorly in the opening but very well as the game goes on.
That's true even at higher levels. I've been around 1800 USCF for about forty years and I'm very uneven in my play. I probably play openings and endgames at around 1950 (or higher) strength but my middle game and tactics are like a 1600 or so.

12:10 wouldn't you want to take with the b pawn and capture towards the center? because taking with the d pawn means you don't have anymore center pawns and loses control of the center

this is why its harder to climb rankings for people like me who is legitimately is just in 1000 -1100 range.. when face with people who are in reality rated 1900-2000, frustrating to lose so lapsidedly almost disheartening to continue playing.. i hate losing most especially losing so badly

Yeah people get their rating back. And it's not like there're a million people smurfing in the lower elo pool for yt videos and speedruns, it's so unlikely to actually get paired with someone rated 2000+, even less likely than seeing cheaters I'd think.
