We always joke that when my husband travels for business, something breaks at home. Well, he left last weekend and on day one, my dishwasher stops! Ahh! When we figured out the 8-4 groove, we googled and voila. This video saved me the hassle of calling an appliance repair man. My 15 year-old got out the drill and watched this, identified the same problem, and within 20 minutes the problem was fixed. THANK YOU!
Dude, you just saved me a bunch of money. I was about to give up after watching a few other videos regarding this same issue. Pulled the front off and drip tray out, (which was to the top). Drained it, cleaned it out and we're back to the races. Much appreciated!
Thanks so much for sharing. Had this problem for two days, and decided today was the day. Soaked up the water in the drip tray with paper towel and Voila! No more dirty dishes!
OMG - you saved my sanity. I'd looked up the "8 beep 4 beep" section in the manual -- I checked the filter (inside the dishwaster) and it said to "check the float" - but I *could not find* the float. I was going to remove the whole dishwasher looking for it -- and voila! You saved me all that headache. Thank you!
You just earned your 50th subscriber. I spent 3 hours this morning trying to fix this. Ended up calling KitchenAid, who said they can send out a local tech to take a look at it in EIGHT DAYS. I would rather not go 8 days without a dishwasher. I decided I would give myself one last try for 15 more minutes to try and fix it myself. Who knew a channel called "Liberty Lovin" with 49 subscribers and a potato for a camera would be the one to instantly relieve my stress and guide me to successfully fixing the issue. God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.
Yep, that was it. Our model was close enough...different config on the tray but same problem from a conceptual perspective. Went away for the weekend and left the house w our adult kids....error code when we got back and tried to run the dishwasher. The tray was full of coffee that seems to have overflowed from the coffee maker on the counter. We live in the middle of nowhere so this easy fix saved us an expensive service call. Thanks!
You have saved me an extra headache. Your video addressed exactly what was wrong with my dishwasher... which turned out to be an easy fix... thanks to your tutorial. The drain well was full due to a leak I had yesterday.... so again, I say thanks... for doing a bit of extra work / research for us and putting it on video...👌🤛.
Thanks! this was the perfect solution to my problem. I accidentally used an Affresh Disposal cleaning tablet rather than a dishwasher cleaning tablet and there were lots of suds! Even after removing the suds and adding vegetable oil it was still giving the 8/4 code. This was so helpful and easy to do. I really appreciate it
Dude! This was EPIC! Thank you so much! I bought this dishwasher EXACTLY a year ago to the day on Thanksgiving. Our dishwasher was doing the exact same thing. Funny, I poured potato water down the drain when making them for mashed potatoes. I sat down to watch the football game and the beep started going off. I don’t mind fixing my own stuff but error codes aren’t my thing. You nailed it! Again, thank you so much. Back to the game!
Thank you! Like the person below I was concerned when this occurred barely a year after purchase and the warranty expired. My wife put the wrong soap in the dishwasher causing it to foam up, which apparently triggered this. At the time I was not aware of that and just thought it had broken randomly. I was so relieved when your video came up after searching and described such an easy fix, which worked for me perfectly.
The gift that keeps giving! This was my problem exactly. I soaked up the water in the float valve tray with a paper towel, and it’s all happy again. Thank you for posting a fix!
Thanks so much! I'm definitely not a handyman. Followed your instructions and fixed dishwasher in about 10-15 minutes (after i found the right socket for bolts). Thanks again!
Thank you! Same dishwasher model/booklet. I left a 5lb bag of ice sitting on my countertop overtop of the dishwasher for less than half hr. Naturally, it began to melt and drip out and over the counter edge and onto the push button surface. This water must have found its way to the drip tray. Same story...F8E4 error code. Had to do the same thing you did. Thanks for the visual!
I had the same issue. Washing dishes in the sink while the dishwasher was running so there must have been some back wash into the dishwasher causing a water leak which caused the "drip float" to trigger an error code. WTF - a drip float ! Why would a dishwasher ever leak when the sink is being used!! I will say it again WTF ! Thank you sir ! For exposing this massive flaw in dishwasher design. Kitchen Aid is usually a good brand. What happened to them? I did like you said dried off the drip float, put it back into position and pressed cancel and error code gone! Thank you !
Thank you so much for posting this! I had the dishwasher going when I dumped out a 2 qt sauce pan that I had soaking in the sink. Sure enough, ended up with a beeping dishwasher flashing F8 E4. I wouldn't have made the connection without your canning water mention. Now I know not to ever do that again!
I'm from California so I don't know what "canning" is but thank God you were doing it. My wife was washing the dog in the sink and drained it while the dishwasher was running. It caused the same issue you had. Best Buy was trying to tell me I needed a new motherboard and that it would take up to ten days to get a tech out here. Thanks to you, I have my dishwasher running TODAY. I'll be buying you a drink with the other commenter here. Thanks sir!!!
Thanks dude. I had the code 8/4 and beeping. Water in the drip tray was my problem. I had just refilled my in sink soap dispenser and I guess a bunch of soap was in a bowl that got put into the dishwasher. I only know that because I opened it (after it stopped) and there were soap suds all over the inside of the dishwasher. My guess is the soap started sudsing up inside the washer and overflowed down to the overflow tray. Just added this as another possible reason causing the error. Also, I noticed the tray, that the float sits in, can slide out as well. I just slid it out and emptied it in the sink. Thanks man!
If simply pouring water into your sink while your dishwasher is running causes a backwash into the machine, your dishwasher drain hose isn't properly installed. Some sinks have an air gap (anti-siphon device) - you don't see these too often today, or if the hose goes directly to your sink tailpipe or disposal stub, it will need to have a 'loop' before it does so to eliminate this possibility.
I’m reading comments here….people thinking they fixed the problem by emptying the tray. If the tray is fulllf water there is a problem. Mine was a dripping fill hose connection. Had there not been a drip tray and switch. My subfloor would have rotted over time. KitchenAid engineers saved me. The installers didn’t tighten the connection good enough.
Oh, and I saved myself a service call or doing it myself (not really an option) by procrastinating long enough that enough water evaporated (wintertime and house is low humidity due to heating) and lowered the float mechanism to where the machine allowed itself to function again.
Got mine just installed and the guy took the drip tray with him. Had him come out and tightened it up and still error code. Says I don’t need the drip tray for some reason or another. I wish I recall why. Awaiting another tech in two days. Ugh.
Thanks the video. Unfortunately, after a few uses of the dishwasher, the water starts collecting in the overflow with the same error code. Any ideas why it continues to collect there?
Any idea what could be the issue if that entire drip tray and float is completely dry?? I’m getting this error, and every video says the same thing and the issue is actually the water in the tray they found. However mine is completely dry. Any ideas? I disconnected and reconnected the sensor connection for the float and cut the power to the dishwasher and reconnected power to just let it restart. Going to run a quick cycle to see if that maybe fixed it. 🤷♂️ 😂
Same dishwasher, same issue...great video! Saved me a ton of money and my wife thinks I'm a rock star! Thank you

Sir, if you were in the bar with me, I would buy you several drinks. Thank you so much for this.
Great post. IT WORKED! We cancelled the appliance guy that was scheduled to come out in a week!
Thank You so much for posting this!!!!!!!!!!!

You saved me a weeklong wait for the repair guy. I was NOT looking forward to doing dishes by hand until next Thursday. Thank you!!!

Thanks for helping fix it by myself. Your advice was clearer than Ktichenaid's online product help.

Thank you so much. I was googling and looking at the manual but no luck, till I found your video! This is Gold!!!
Same I didn’t understand when I was googling it!
This saved me a visit from the expensive repair guy! Thanks so much!

Same issue here at 11pm at night. Fixed it right up.
Dude! Great stuff. Thank goodness for people like you who upload this stuff
Hey man, gem of a video. Fixed my problem on a Saturday morning! If you're in Minnesota ever, I owe ya beer or something.
The gift that keeps giving! This was my problem exactly. I soaked up the water in the float valve tray with a paper towel, and it’s all happy again. Thank you for posting a fix!

I used the wrong dishwasher soap after that I have the same code it was 8 - 4 . I clean the dripping tray at the bottom and problem resolved . thx
You just saved me $185! I could hug your neck! God bless you!
Thank you for this. This helped me fix our 4 month old Kitchenaid. Much appreciated!
Thank you so much for this. I was ready to buy control boards and other stuff per other videos. All it cost me to fix was a few paper towels!
Thank you! Same dishwasher model/booklet. I left a 5lb bag of ice sitting on my countertop overtop of the dishwasher for less than half hr. Thanks for this ! I found a small drip on the supply line that had caused this. Very helpful.

Thank you soo much. Helped me resolve the same issue when someone put the wrong soap and ran the dishwasher.

thanks - this is what I'm trying to figure out is how to fix the problem so it doesn't happen again. I will try the "loop :D
Thank you so much. Took a second to find the tray cause mine was still clipped up but once I got it, it was instant fix.

Thank you fixed my 8-4. Drip tray has a sensor
Big help, much appreciated
Oh, and I saved myself a service call or doing it myself (not really an option) by procrastinating long enough that enough water evaporated (wintertime and house is low humidity due to heating) and lowered the float mechanism to where the machine allowed itself to function again.
Thank you so much! You saved me a bunch of $$$
You’re a savior!
Thank-you for this video!!!
Thank you so much. This was so helpful.
You're advice worked!
Got mine just installed and the guy took the drip tray with him. Had him come out and tightened it up and still error code. Says I don’t need the drip tray for some reason or another. I wish I recall why. Awaiting another tech in two days. Ugh.
I checked the drain tray it was full. Dryer out tray and float .works like new
Yes! This fixed my dishwasher! Can I Venmo you $20?
That is awesome! Please just "pay it forward" when you can 👍
Thank you for the video. Very informative. I have same problem
Thanks the video. Unfortunately, after a few uses of the dishwasher, the water starts collecting in the overflow with the same error code. Any ideas why it continues to collect there?
Did you find out why? Mine is the same
Does the dishwasher have to be unplugged to do this?
Thank you - that worked!
Mine is having this same problem but I can't find the float to figure out how to disconnect and get to it.
thanks! this just helped me!
Good fix. 🙏 Thank you
Yep. That was the problem.
Temporary fix… nobody knows what’s the cause of the issue? The 2 drain tubes in the extremes pour water into the tray. Cause??
woq
you da man, I bet this is whats wrong with my brand new scratch and ding dishwasher keeps fucking beeping
Dude! You sir, are a good man 🫵👊
